Review New Palm PDAs... time to see if there is any improvements over my old
models. The Zire 72 is a general and rather vast update to the older Zire 71
model with a twist in the Zire 71's style. Funny, it's nearly one year after I
posted my review of the Zire 71 here on epinions. Since Palm has changed their
naming conventions of their PDAs to the Zire and Tungsten lines, Palm has
started a furious PDA offensive on their rivals. In fact, Palm has sold over 3
million Zire branded models since the debut of the original Zire... which is
impressive since the Zire line consisted of only the original Zire, the Zire 21,
and Zire 71 to this point. Price? The retail price is a reasonable $299. I
purchased the Zire 72 at a considerably cheaper rate at Staples... $200 sales
tax but before 5% Staples discount, 2% ebates.com discount, and 2% American
Express Business Card discount is applied. The $200 I'm giving is after Staples
10% off promotion with a $50 off $250 personal coupon and a $19 Staples Business
Rewards Check. You can check my epinion The Art of Buying... Getting your
money's worth! for some tips on how to get items for a better price. My Short
Take Overall, Palm made major improvements to the Zire 72... Palm doubled the
RAM to 32MB, installed a much faster processor (now a Intel PXA270 running at a
speedy 312MHz!), added bluetooth support, tweaked the included software, and
upgraded the camera to 1.2 MegaPixels. All this while keeping the $249 price
tag... which makes this PDA a bargain compared to some other Palm OS PDAs. The
Zire 72 performs as well and in many cases better than comparable Palm OS PDAs
in a similar or higher price range. The only two major issues I have with the
Zire 72 is the odd dimensions of the casing and the lack of a lens cover. Some
minor issues are the more toyish nature of the camera and the lack of Wi-Fi.
Pros: 1) $249 price tag 2) 32MB of total RAM (24MB user accessible) 3)
Integrated 1.2 MP camera but no flash or optical zoom 4) High resolution screen
5) SD/MMC slot with SDIO support 6) 312MHz Intel PXA270 XScale processor 7)
Integrated Bluetooth 8) Decent Battery Life 9) Integrated Voice Recorder Cons:
1) Odd case design currently making it difficult to find a proper case 2) no
Universal Connector 3) no Camera Lens cover Losing the Slide... Streamlining
Case Design The Zire 72 drops the 71's sliding case design in favor of the more
traditional boxy look of other PDAs. The color scheme is more of a bright royal
blue with silver accents with the rounded finish that goes along with the Zire
models. The 72's dimensions are 4.6 x 2.95 x 0.67 inches which is just slightly
larger than the Zire 71. However, the weight has fallen to 4.8 oz. from the Zire
71's 5.2 oz. The Zire 72 is slightly larger than other Palm PDAs. Also the Zire
72 has a slight rubbery feel to it. The Zire 72 loses the mini-joystick
controller and adds the 5-way D-pad controller from the Tungsten E. The
placement of the 4 application buttons follows more of the Tungsten T3 design
where the application buttons surround the 5-way controller. Note that the 4
application buttons on the Zire 72 are preset for the Calender, Contacts,
Camera, and RealOne MP3 Player (don't worry you can change these if you want).
The overall unit is fairly easy to hold in one hand and the controller and
buttons are easy to press with your thumb. The stylus is the same one used with
the other Zire models and is thick and solid although a bit cheap feeling. The
top of the unit has SD/MMC slot, power power, 3.5 mm headphone port, the stylus
slot, and IR port. The bottom of the unit holds the mini-USB port and power
port. The left side has the voice record button. The back of the Zire 72 is much
thicker than the rest of the handheld since it houses the speaker... the camera
lens in the middle of the speaker and the microphone just to the side of the
speaker. Guts of the Zire 72? Inside you'll find a much faster processor... the
Intel XScale PXA270 running at a brisk 312MHz which is a bit more than twice the
speed of the Zire 71. You also get 32 MB of RAM of which 24 MB are
user-accessible. Old Zire 71 users will notice how much zippier the Zire 72 is.
It doesn't lose a beat with simultaneous Kinoma video playback with RealOne
Player in the background. In fact, I don't think I experienced any slowdown in
any application that I ran through the Zire 72 with the MP3s playing in the
background. Performance seemed to be on par with the Tungsten C and the Tungsten
T3... although I have not benchmarked any of these handhelds for solid numbers.
The Zire 72 comes with 8MB of ROM although I am unsure whether this is Flash ROM
or not. Screen The 72 retails the high quality and clear 320x320 pixel screen (transreflective
TFT) which is capable of displaying 65,000 colors. The backlight brightness can
be adjusted via an onscreen slider but never completely turned off. Although the
screen washes out in direct sunlight, it is still readable except at a few odd
angles. Overall, the screen is about equivalent to the high resolution color
screens in other current PalmOne PDAs. Pictures displayed on the screen are
quite clear and crisp. Color reproduction is accurate and very vibrant. Darker
colors seemed to be slightly better reproduced than brighter colors. While
displaying some old movie trailers, the screen displayed mild ghosting effects
on trailers of The Matrix and Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon . I didn't note
any problems with most games (only with much older Palm OS games that don't
support the high resolution screen). As usual, the bottom 1/3 of the screen is
for the dedicated Graffiti2 area with the four silk screened "soft" application
buttons. These four "soft" buttons can be user defined to other
applications/functions. Cameras A 1.2 MegaPixel camera sounds great... but the
implementation will not have you throwing out your dedicated digital camera yet.
Overall, the Zire 72 blows away all other PDA camera and cellular phone camera
implementations. The pictures and details of the Zire 72 photos are better by
miles... however, it is limited by the lack of a flash and an optical zoom. Then
again, how much can you ask of a camera integrated into a PDA? The camera is
best for stills or slow moving/action shots. Sports and other fast action photos
will not come out on the Zire 72. As an added treat, you have limited movie
capturing capabilities for short periods of time. This mode is best for slow
moving action... although even slow moving action can be quite pixelated.
Technically, I would even prefer the short movies recorded on a dedicated
digital camera over what the Zire 72 captures. Note that there is no cover for
the camera lens... at all! You have to put it into the case to protect the lens.
MP3s and Multimedia I was quite happy with MP3 playback... it sounded crisp and
clear through the headphones and was plenty loud enough. There was no pauses in
playback through a 12 song playlist. Note that you do need a SD card to store
your MP3 files for playback. If you're just doing straight MP3 playback, the
RealOne player will shut off the screen to conserve battery power while going
through your playlist. Kinoma player played all my movie trailers fine... no
jitters or pauses even with MP3 playback in the background. That was quite
impressive! Voice Recorder The position of the microphone and the record button
suit right handed users more than left handed users. Regardless, the voice
recorder is quite clear both in recording and playback. You can do some neat
things with your recordings such as utilize them as an alarm or set them as
private just like entries on your memos, calender, contacts, and the such.
Bluetooth? I only have limited use for Bluetooth personally but the Zire 72
seemed to recognize other Bluetooth enabled devices like my DeskJet 995 and
interacted with these devices with few hitches. I've been told that the use of a
Bluetooth enabled phone was made as simple as possible on the Zire 72. Battery
Overall, battery life is decent. Shortest time I had with the battery was 4 1/2
hours of straight MP3 playback. With the MP3 playback in the background, I was
able to do other activities like Documents to Go, Kinoma Player, and Photo
Viewing which shortened battery life to about 3 1/2 hours. Graffiti2 Graffiti2
uses two stroke system that goes with how you would naturally print text.
Although you cannot tell the Zire 72 to go back to the original Graffiti system,
you can program Graffiti2 to mimic the original Graffiti system. Overall, I
liked Graffiti2 more than the original Graffiti. You also have the option of
setting the entire screen as a Graffiti2 writing area... although I personally
didn't like that. Note that if you turn on the option of having the whole screen
act as a Graffiti2 space, the digitizer response becomes delayed. Applications
The Zire 72 has pretty much the same PIM applications that were included in the
Tungsten T3 with a few new tweaks more tailored to the specific abilities of the
Zire 72. Improvements include the ability to use photos snapped with the Zire 72
or other picture files transferred into the Zire 72 as backgrounds or for your
contacts list. The overall functionality of the PIM applications have also been
improved over the Tungsten T3 versions. Other notable apps include Documents to
Go 6 (which has support of native Word and Excel files), Web Pro v3.5 browser,
and VersaMail v2.7. Other included programs installable from the CD include
palmOne messages, Expense, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Solitaire, PalmReader, powerOne
personal calculator, Audible player, and a Java Virtual Machine app. What's in
the Box? Should I get anything else? You get the Software Essentials CD, Palm
Desktop Software, USB cable, power adapter, carry case, and uh... that's more or
less it (warranty cards and Graffiti2 cheat sheet are also included). The
included carry case is okay... but I think most would want to find a more form
fitting case as they become available. You also should purchase an SD card of at
least 128MB in size. A 256MB card should run in the $50-60 range. If you want a
keyboard... well, you're stuck with the IR keyboard right now. Perceived
Weaknesses? Price might be a problem... but you do get alot of handheld for the
money in my opinion. However, it is still $300 for a PDA especially if you don't
need all those features on the Zire 72. The lack of Wi-Fi can be a weakness for
some users... especially with Sony's PEG-TJ37 model out there. The Sony model
has many equivalent features to the Zire 72 but adds Wi-Fi in the $299 price
tag.... however, the TJ37 loses in processor speed, camera resolution, and
Bluetooth support. If this is too much PDA for you? What if you're looking for
something more basic than this? Well, the Tungsten E retailing at $199 (which
I've reviewed at epinions) and the Zire 31 retailing at $149 (which I hope to
review soon... some of the medical students are running around with them now)
are both great options. Need Professional Reviews? I'd suggest reading sites
like: www.palminfocenter.com www.brighthand.com Every now and then,
AnandTech.com and Tomshardwareguide.com puts up a handheld review or two.
Although I'm not a big fan for Cnet.com reviews, you can check them out as well.

Review: PalmOne Zire 72 When the new PalmOne units were first leaked, I had no
intention of buying one. I was pretty happy with my Tungsten T2 and patiently
waiting for a new Tungsten model. My only niggles were a need for more RAM and a
lack of speed in the T2's processor. Then PalmOne announced the Zire 72. It
seemed unlikely that any new Tungstens were likely to surface soon, and so the
promise of a 312mHz processor would deal with at least one of my issues, so I
took the plunge on day of release and ordered one from Expansys. [Read more]
Appearance/packaging The first thing that struck me is that the Zire is VERY
blue. The main front of the casing has a slightly rubbery feel to it which is
quite nice and makes the unit feel secure in your hands (owners of the Ipaq 2210
- it's a bit like the side parts on that unit). The screen surround and the
button area has a nice brushed chrome look to it. The back, surrounding the
built-in camera, is metal and silver in colour. There's a little bump on the
back where the camera sticks out, but this makes the unit comfortable to hold as
your fingers naturally fit just below the bump. I don't honestly know what all
the casing is made of, but it feels solid, well constructed, and not at all
plasticy, even if parts of it are. The buttons are a good size and the d-pad
easy to use. Instead of the note and memo buttons on other PalmOne units you now
get a camera button to activate the camera and a music button to take you to the
inbuilt RealOne music player. On the bottom you find the charging inlet and the
mini USB connector. Whilst the USB connector is not advertised as charging the
unit it does seem to add some charge to the unit if switched off (and albeit
very slowly). On the left side is the voice recorder button and on the right
side the stylus slot. The supplied stylus is plastic, but it seems that
replacement metal stylii are available as it takes the same type as the Tungsten
W, C and E. The top of the Zire 72 has the headphone socket (normal size, none
of that 2.5 mm rubbish), the infrared port and the SD slot. This time PalmOne
has done away with the silly dummy SD card that they used in previous units and
instead put in a little protective door. It pushes out of the way when you have
a card in and springs back into place to stop dust getting in when you don't.
The Screen The Zire 72 screen is the now (almost) standard 320x320 high
resolution TFT unit with a static writing area below. I know a lot of people
want virtual grafitti and a larger screen area, but this setup has worked very
well on a number of handhelds now, and in my opinion is still an excellent
option. The colours are bright and sharp. The screen is a little too bright,
perhaps, even at the lowest setting, but I'm sure that makers of programs like
Dimmer will be adding this unit to their list of compatible handhelds soon
enough. Sound and Video The Zire 72 comes with RealOne player installed in ROM
which is a bit of a pain if you'd prefer to use something else, but many of the
previous criticisms of it no longer apply. Firstly, this unit is loud. Even a
dedicated death metal fan would find the highest setting loud enough using
headphones. I played a couple of MP3s at half volume through a pair of Sony
MDR-V300 headphones and the quality was good, the bass thumping, and the sound
loud enough to drown out any background noise. Gone are the days of the too
quiet Tungsten T problems. The second issue was that of having to install Real
Player on your PC, as it is prone to taking over all your media functions,
installing spyware, and generally hijacking your computer. The RealOne player on
your handheld will happily play MP3 files and you can install the songs using a
card reader, so there's no reason at all to let Real Player anywhere near your
PC. Hooray! The Zire 72 also comes with a new Media application which plays
short videos you record with the inbuilt camera. The installation CD also
includes a Windows Media Player/Direct X program that will allow you to play
your Zire-recorded videos through WMP on your computer. For those of you who
want Kinoma Player, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that it
doesn't ship with the Zire 72 and if you don't already have a version of Kinoma
Producer to make your own videos, you'll have to buy it. The good news is that
you can download Kinoma Player from the PalmOne website or from Kinoma and it
all works brilliantly, so you can view the files you already have. If you're a
movie fan I'd recommend the selection of movie trailers which Lance at PalmOne
City has uploaded. It covers most current major titles and is reguarly updated.
Software The Zire 72 has the same updated PIM functions which shipped with the
Tungsten E and T3, but with the added bonus that you can add photographs to the
Contacts program. This is bound to be an invaluable business tool for people
with a huge contact book and a bad memory for faces. I have a gripe regarding
the inbuilt Calender function, and it is one that has once again caused me to
install DateBk5 - I want a week view that looks like an old Filofax page. My
Prism had it in DateBk+ but not one Palm/PalmOne handheld has had it since. If
you're listening PalmOne, please please please add it in to the Cobalt version.
The Zire 72 has all the usual suspects present and correct - Memo, Tasks, Web
Pro, World Clock, Notepad, Dialler and Calculator are all there. The additional
CD includes Palm Reader, Documents To Go, Solitaire, PowerOne Calculator, and
now Audible player too. I've added ZLauncher, BT Toggle, several Astraware
games, BugMe, AvantGo, BackupMan, and a bunch of other things, and I still have
9+ MB of the RAM left. Camera The camera in the Zire 72 is advertised as the
first 1.2MP digital camera in a PDA. There seems to be some discussion around
the web as to the quality of the pictures, but I can't see anything wrong. The
Zire will take pictures up to 1280x960 pixels, has a digital zoom function and
makes mini movies too. It doesn't work well in dark conditions, but what do you
want for a camera built-in to a PDA? It does a perfectly good job for what it
is, and here's a cute picture of my cat to prove it. Conclusion So to sum up,
the Zire 72 is an excellent piece of kit. It has a good all round set of
features - Bluetooth, camera, voice recorder, hi-res screen, music player, and
comes with a full selection of essential software (see list above). There's been
some discussion here regarding the lack of 'Universal Connector' on the Zire 72,
but given that the Mini USB connector is now an industry-wide connector for many
different types of gadgets from cameras to MP3 players to PDAs, is that not
universal enough? It is for me and means one less additional cable to plug into
my computer. The useable RAM is slightly less than in my old T2, but with an
expansion card and ZLauncher, I can run most programs direct from the card
anyway. The new Intel PXA270 processor chip is fantastically fast by comparison
to my T2 and in benchmark tests is very close to the speeds of the T3 and TC.
The battery life on the Zire 72 is also affected by the faster processor, but in
a good way. The new chip is supposed to be more energy efficient and I have
found nothing to make me doubt that. I charged the unit fully for the first time
on Thursday lunchtime. I'm writing this on Sunday afternoon, and apart from any
charge the unit is getting from the USB cable, it hasn't been properly charged
since I started. It's still reading 50+% power and that's with all the playing,
setting up, hotsyncing etc I've done in the last two days. PalmOne claims 5 days
between charges if you're using it for basic PIM functions, and that sounds
about right. I played an hours worth of MP3s with the screen off earlier and the
battery only dropped by 9%. The recommended retail price is $299 or £229.99.
Better deals are available on the net. I saved myself £30, so shop around. I'd
give the Zire 72 out of 5. If it had wi-fi included it would've got the full 5.

It's nice to hear that the battery lasts longer than my Zire 71. I thought the
camera was very good as well. I took a couple of pictures in the store and the
colour looked good to me. I could be wrong, but I thought it took the picture
quite a bit faster than my Zire 71, and it seemed to adjust to the lighting much
faster. I think I would be a little nervous about having the camera lens exposed
all the time though. Is there any sort of case or cover included. I think I
would give it a 6 out of 5 if it had wifi. Reply With Quote RobertM View Public

included. It's quite a nice slip case with a velcro fastening and a wrist strap.
The only downside is that you have to take the unit fully out of the case to use
it. I can't find a picture at the PalmOne site and none of the other usual case
manufacturers seem to have anything ready just yet, but I'll certainly be
looking for a nice leather case in the next few weeks. Hopefully one of them
will be mindful enough to put a little moveable cover over the camera cutout.

understand from a posting elsewhere that the PalmOne hard case for the Zire 72
does indeed incorporate protection for the camera. Apparently there's a flap at
the back that can be moved when you want to use the camera without removing it
from the case. __________________ Zire 72, Ipaq 4150, Siemens McLaren SX1,

lens is flush with the back, so laying it on a rough surface could scratch it.
Too bad they hadn't recessed the lens a bit. The case sounds like it will work
fine. Reply With Quote RobertM View Public Profile Send a private message to

I'm sorry but I can't answer that. I don't own the hard case, I'm only reporting
what I've read elsewhere on the web. I'm not personally a fan of hard cases, so
I won't be using a case other than the soft case supplied free with the unit
until one of the major case-makers (probably Vaja) produces one for the Zire 72.
As I've said previously in this thread, the softcase supplied with the unit
doesn't allow any access whilst in the case, except to the headphone jack, which
does mean you could use the Z72 as an MP3 player whilst put away.

Why not try PalmOne City and Brighthand. Both of them have specific forums just

update. Well I've had it for just under 2 weeks now and I'm still very happy
with my purchase. I really like the feel of the unit as well, it never feels
like it will slip out of my hands. I bought a replacement metal stylus (the one
for Palm W/C/E) and it fits fine except that the top now sticks out of the unit
slightly. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though, as it makes the stylus easy
to grab quickly. The battery life has been fine, even with me reguarly playing
Fish Tycoon (and with it running in the background all day). I haven't used the
camera very much, but I didn't really expect to. I'm sure it will come in handy
every now and then. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to put them
here. __________________ Zire 72, Ipaq 4150, Siemens McLaren SX1, Siemens SL55,

Palm Zire 71 Hands-on with the latest mid-range handheld from Palm By Steven G.
Bush | Publisher Apr 23, 2003 Zire 71 Palm's latest mid-range handheld, the Zire
71, is all that and a bag of chips. Well, maybe not the bag of chips part, but
thanks to its built-in digital camera it can take a darn good photograph of one.
With its built-in camera and superb color screen, the $299 Zire 71 redefines
what we can begin to expect from a reasonably priced handheld, and completes an
impressive six-month overhaul of Palm's product line. Despite its price tag, the
Zire 71 is a highly capable, and solid, little device. Its slide-down design,
unlike the Tungsten T's, is less flash and more substance. It reveals -- and
protects -- a surprisingly sharp digital camera that we quickly discovered was
easily up to the task of capturing life on the go. And when coupled with the
included RealOne Mobile Player, it produced full, rich stereo sound that kept us
coming back for more. But the Zire 71 isn't just about cool technology; it still
adheres to Palm's tried-and-true formula for a pocketable, easy-to-use handheld
with long battery life. The only downsides we could find with the Zire 71 were
its lack of integrated wireless (and its non-existent support for Palm's
Bluetooth SD Card), its lack of flash ROM (which means you won't be able to
upgrade its OS), and the lack of voice recording (for those who really, really
need that feature). Still, overall the Zire 71 is simply an exceptional device
that should give the original Zire a run for its money as the fastest selling
Palm handheld ever -- and, along with the new Tungsten C, dispel the notion that
Palm hasn't kept up with technology. Form The Zire 71 resembles the original
Zire, which debuted back in October, with a few exceptions, most noticeably its
color.. Rather than iPod white, the Zire 71 is blue and silver, along the lines
of Sony Ericsson's T68i cellphone. The silvery back is metal (obviously to
protect the camera) while the blue front side is hard plastic. In a tale of the
tape, the Zire 71 measures 2.9" wide, 0.67" thick and 4.5" tall, and weighs in
at a mere 5.3 ounces, perfect for the hand or the pocket. On the front of the
device is the display, which has a dedicated Graffiti area (although as we'll
mentioned later you can use the whole screen for Graffiti 2 input). Zire 71
Below the screen are four application launch buttons (for Calendar, Address
Book, Photos, and Notepad) with a five-way joystick-like navigation peg in the
middle. As with the Tungsten T, you can press down once on the navigation peg to
display the date and time, in large, readable text and numbers, or hold it down
and the home screen will display so you can launch any of your apps. Palm
continues to forgo crowding up the sides of its devices with buttons, scroll
wheels and the like. In fact, the Zire 71 is completely smooth on both sides;
everything is on the top and bottom. And even the bottom is relatively bare. All
that you'll find there is the Universal Connector, which makes it first
appearance in the Zire line. Zire 71 The top, on the other hand, is a bit more
crowded. There's the Secure Digital slot, the IR port, the stereo jack, the
stylus, and the power button. Still, the Zire 71 remains one of the most
uncomplicated designs we've seen, and we like that. Zire 71 The only shortcoming
we see with the Zire 71's design is that it doesn't seem conducive to supporting
a variety of cases. It comes with an elasticized slipcase, but that requires
two-handed removal. Flip cases, unless clipped to the back in the Universal
Connector tabs or Velcro'd, seem out of the question. Still, we give the Palm
Zire 71 an EXCELLENT rating based on form. Function As we mentioned in our
review of the Tungsten T, the knock on Palm lately has been that it hasn't keep
up with technical advances; even Palm admits it. While Microsoft and its Pocket
PC licensees released devices with integrated wireless, brilliant color
displays, fast processors and oddles of memory, Palm struggled with business and
market issues, often neglecting the current state of handheld technology. Well,
no more. With the Zire 71, Palm has upped the bar when it comes to mid-priced
handhelds. Still, if you're looking for dramatic changes with the release of
Palm OS 5, you may be disappointed. There's nothing remarkably different about
its user interface (UI) besides the crisper new fonts and icons. But as Martha
Stewart would say, that's a good thing. Palm OS 5 is all about support for
faster ARM processors and higher resolution displays. Speed. If you thought
Palm's plan was to seed its entire Zire line with hand-me-down 33 and 66Mhz
Motorola Dragonball processors, think again. The Zire 71 is powered by a Texas
Instruments OMAP310 processor running at 144Mhz. Not bad for a $299 handheld,
and a far cry from just a year ago and the Palm m130. Memory. While Palm's
recent memory breakthrough is realized in its new Tungsten C handheld, it isn't
in the Zire 71. The Zire 71 comes with 16MB of SDRAM (13MB of which is usable),
which is plenty for most average users but considerably shy of that found on the
new Tungsten C and most Pocket PCs. Still, the expansion card slot offers
unlimited storage capability. Multimedia. Finally we get a taste of multimedia
on a Palm branded handheld. Palm teased us with the Tungsten T, which had the
hardware but not the software, but the Zire 71 actually delivers. Zire 71 First,
there's audio. The Zire comes with the RealOne Mobile Player for Palm from
RealNetworks, which trust me was well worth the wait. The sound (enjoyed either
privately through stereo headphones or shared with the world through portable
speakers) was incredibly rich, full and clear -- truly some of the best sound
we've ever heard from a handheld. We listened to a dozen different MP3 files --
from Beethoven's Fur Elise to Berlin's catchy Blink of an Eye -- but have yet to
try a RealAudio file. Palm's also included Audible Player, which we used to
listen to a few brief clips, including an excerpt of the book Lost Light by
Michael Connelly and an interview with the irrepressible Robin Williams. While
we've never been big fans of Audible (due to its tinny sound) we're sure Audible
lovers with enjoy it more than ever on the Zire 71. Next, there's video. Kinoma
Player, version 1.5.1, and its desktop companion, Kinoma Producer, are included
on the Software Essentials CD that comes with the Zire 71. We watched two
pre-recorded movie trailers, Men In Black II and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
. We're not sure the frame-rate they were recorded at, but they were not as
smooth as we'd prefer. Also, the sound quality was only fair. However, when we
ran the Performance Test on the MIB II trailer, it was quite smooth, and ran at
162 frames per second. Zire 71 Now for the kicker: the Zire 71 comes with a
built-in digital camera -- and a pretty good one at that. It's a 640 x 480
pixel, VGA-quality auto exposure digital camera that's activated automatically
when you slide up the front of the device (which is easily accomplished with
just your thumb). Sliding it open reveals the dedicated shutter button on the
front and the lens on the back. It also launches the camera application and the
screen becomes your LCD viewer. It's a neat design that solidly protects the
camera. The camera app allows you to adjust the resolution (160 x 120, 320 x
240, or 640 x 480) and where to save the photo (RAM or SD card), among other
options. There's a desktop component called Palm Photos that you can use to
view, organize, share and synchronize photos between the Zire 71 and Windows
desktop. Here are links to two pictures we took with the Zire 71's camera:
Picture taken under canopy at outdoor cafe Picture of painted mural on building
in shade Screen. As The Beatles sang, it's getting better all the time. And it
sure is when it comes to displays. Palm has jumped on the transflective
bandwagon with a color display that tops the one found on its Tungsten T
handheld. It's a 320 x 320 pixel TFT LCD capable of displaying 65,536 colors,
which is the minimum required for realistic photo rendering. Since it's
transflective rather than reflective (which is found on the Tungsten T), it
offers better viewing indoors at the sake of outdoor viewing. Bottom line, this
is an incredible screen that will please even the pickiest handheld enthusiast.
Communications. The Zire line continues to lack any form of wireless
communications. In fact, the Zire 71 (and the Tungsten C for that matter)
currently do not support Palm's Bluetooth Card -- so much for pairing it with a
Sony Ericsson T68i for a dynamic mobile duo. You can use an IR-enabled cellphone,
a cable, or a Palm Modem to get connected, but it's certainly not the wireless
world we've all been promised. Palm certainly needs to correct this shortcoming
soon before the masses get too disgruntled. Expansion. The Zire 71 continues
Palm's support of dual expansion. First, there's the SD/MMC slot, which is
capable of handling most SDIO cards, like Margi's Presenter To Go card and Veo's
camera card, as well as typical memory cards. And then there's the Universal
Connector, which wasn't present in the $99 Zire. Power. Battery life remains a
cornerstone of the Palm philosophy and the Zire 71 is no exception, thanks in
strong part to the stinginess of TI's OMAP310 processor. The Zire 71's
rechargeable 900 mAh lithium ion battery should get the typical user about a
week's worth of usage between charges, or five hours of continuous MP3 playing.
Unfortunately, the Zire 71's battery is not user replaceable, and it can only be
charged through the serial port (there's no separate AC port), so you'll either
have to charge it through the cradle or purchase a travel charger. Applications.
The Zire 71 runs Palm OS 5.2.1, which provides new customization options, like
color themes, and includes Graffiti 2. An interesting note about Graffiti 2 is
that you can select in Preferences whether to use the full screen for Graffiti 2
rather than just the Graffiti area. Using the full screen also allows you to see
your pen strokes (or not, if you wish), which will remain on the screen for a
couple of seconds. Palm also includes a new Quick Install application for
Windows users that makes it easy to move files, media and applications to the
Zire. And the Zire 71 comes with version 2.5 of VersaMail, which brings a host
of new features including two-line display. However, this is the first Palm in a
while that doesn't come with DataViz's Documents To Go, which appears to be
relegated to the corporate Tungsten line. Overall, we give the Zire 71 a GOOD
rating based on functionality. The only thing holding it back is its lack of
integrated wireless of any kind. Value The Palm Zire 71 will appeal to a broad
range of consumers, including first time buyers and original Zire owners looking
to trade up. For $299 you get a fast processor running the latest version of
Palm's popular operating system, an incredible color screen, amazing sound, and
a built-in digital camera. However, the Zire 71 lacks the any type of integrated
wireless, including Bluetooth, leaving it seriously lacking in today's wireless
world. Still, it's a solid handheld at a great price. Therefore, we give it an
EXCELLENT rating based on value. Bottom Line The Palm Zire 71 is a remarkable
mid-range handheld that combines style and functionality, while remaining true
to Palm's "pocketable, easy-to-use, long battery life" philosophy. Its only
shortcoming is its lack of integrated wireless, which we hope can be somewhat
overcome in the near future with support for Secure Digital Bluetooth and W-Fi
cards. Send an e-mail link to a friend Email this story | Discuss this article

E Buy from Amazon.com The Palm PalmOne Zire 72 is a great new unit, but you
really need a good case to protect it from dust and scratches. Seems like
PalmOne learned a lesson from their old Palm case (metal case for the Zire, Zire
21, Zire 31.) which was the worst case they ever designed. This one is much
better designed. First of all, it provides a nice, snug fit for the case. It
slides in with a bit of effort and once in, is very tight. Unlike the most
popular third party cases for the Palm Zire 71 which hinges on the right, the
PalmOne Hard Case for the Zire 72 hinges on a much more natural spot, the Left,
so it opens like a book. This is a welcome addition. Unlike the old Zire case,
and the PalmOne Tungsten E case the 72 case allows you to turn on/off the unit,
as well as access the SD slot. Most importantly you can plug in headphones while
you listen to music. The case is comprised of a lightweight aluminum cover and a
more firm, rubberized body. This allows a non-slip grip on this case, a first
for a PalmOne hard case. This should help prevent accidental drops! Probably the
best feature of the hard case is the back, where a small, expertly designed
slide cover keeps the lens clear of dust on the digital camera. Also, because of
the rubberized material, it helps keep the camera area "airtight" to keep out
dust. The bottom of the unit has a cutout, so you can still hotsync and recharge
the Zire 72 while still in the metal case. The top of the case extends over the
top of the PDA to protect the unit while in the case. The inside back of the
unit allows you to store 2 extra SD cards, but I would have preferred a sleeker
case without this ability. After all, larger memory cards are not very expensive
and most people don't carry extra SD cards with them. Overall, the hard case is
very well designed and is a great investment for your Zire 72. The only downside
is that the case makes the voice memo button from use, and the case itself is a
bit too tight to open, but is better once you get the hang of it. Top About
