HP finally listened and is providing replacement grips for the Ipaq 2215. The kit includes the grips and some other things, though I'm not sure what. The technician thought it included the battery compartment cover and a new carrying case, but couldn't confirm that for me. I simply called HP tech support, they confirmed I was still under warranty, and then put it in the mail. I already received an e-mail that it shipped. Here's the instructions for ordering and replacing, directly from the HP web site: Please note that, if the side grips (Spare Part Number 349036-001) of your iPAQ Pocket PC h2200 unit are damaged due to a defective slip case, the side grips and slip case can be replaced by you. The replacement side grips and slip case can be ordered by you, please contact our Technical Support at 1-800-652-6672, options 3, 1 (enter 10 digit phone number), 2. If you are a first time caller, your phone number will not be registered in the database. You will need to enter your phone number twice and then wait for the routing center to put you through to a Technical Support Specialist. To remove the defective side grip(s), complete the following steps: 1. Hold the iPAQ pocket PC on its side with the side grip facing up and the Secure Digital (SD)/Compact Flash (CF) card slots pointing away from you. Note: Ensure that the side grip is free from any oils or slippery substances that may prevent proper grasp during this removal procedure. 2. With your right thumbnail, press firmly and hold the lower (pointed) end of the side grip. (This will help release the locking tab underneath the side grip.) Caution: Ensure that no pressure is exerted on the display panel. Exerting pressure on the display may result in damage to the display. 3. Place your left thumb on the middle of the side grip (helps to disengage the four contact tabs underneath the side grip more effectively) and slide the side grip up about 1/8th inch. 4. Lift off the side grip. I just received the package today. New grips and a new battery compartment cover. Is the battery compartment cover causing folks problems? Anyway, the grips are a "snap" to put in. However, once they were in, I notice that my Ipaq is a little thinner and can now slip out of my metal case (Innopocket) when the lid is open. Strange, but I'm still happy! __________________ Previous gear: Ipaq 3765, Palm 500 Currently: Ipaq 2215! nategesner is offline nategesner View Public Profile Send a private message to nategesner Find More Posts by nategesner Add nategesner to Your Buddy List Old 02-12-2004, 05:05 AM # 5 rscanady Registered User Join Date: Jul 2003 Posts: 11 Battery Compartment cover One of the retaining tabs broke on my battery compartment cover one day, at the time there was no replacement, so its good to know that you can get one now....however its nothing that a $2 tube of super glue wont fix either.....just my $.02 rscanady is offline rscanady View Public Profile Send a private message to rscanady Find More Posts by rscanady Add rscanady to Your Buddy List Old 02-19-2004, 08:21 PM # 6 Jack Senior Editor Jack's Avatar Join Date: Jun 2002 Location: Norfolk, Ma Posts: 1,143 PPC Techs option... PPC Techs have released a Do-It-Yourself Replacement Cover Kit . The kit contains detailed, fully illustrated instructions and all the tools & components needed to replace the side grips. Each kit contains: 1. Torx screwdriver, size T-6, to remove and install the case/cover screws. 2. 3 longer replacement screws to mount the side covers. (An extra screw in case one is lost during install) 3. A left and right cover. It seems a bit pricey to me but they look good on especially if the ones you had are gone! Black plastic, and snap on the same way. This is a 'fix'? HP will go the way of Compaq, I predict. I'll wait to see how long these last... but I predict I'll need to order (and pay for) the anodized aluminum clips I saw in an ad. rdpark is offline rdpark View Public Profile Send a private message to rdpark Visit rdpark's homepage! Ipaq HQ Forums > Admin Forums > iPaq HQ News > Metal Side Grips for the 2215! View Full Version : Metal Side Grips for the 2215! IPAQ HQ whitelyt http://www.ipaqhq.com/images/ppctechs-metalsidegrips.jpg22xx Metal Grips Have you had issues with your rubber grips falling off? If your 2215 is still under warranty you can get a rubber grip replacement kit from HP. However, word has it the Pocket PC Techs are soon coming out with metal side grips. There is not a lot of info as of yet so they could be metal or they could be aluminum. In either case it would be much sturdier than the rubber grips. The metal grips look very nice and it could be a big hit when and if Pocket PC Techs releases them. whitelyt The grips are reported to be anodized aluminum. They will also come in different colors. The grips should be posted on Pocket PC Techs website soon for pre-order. xboxlord I don'tsee this being a big seller. Most 2215 users I've heard have said that they like the grips because they are different from the unit and they are great grips so the unit doesn't slide out of your hand. Also, from the picture, the metal "grips" don't look too great. whitelyt I guess until you have a 2215 and have went through the issue of having the rubber grips falling apart you wouldn't/couldn't appreciate someone developing something like this. I have had to get replacement grips for mine in the first 4 months I had mine. HP was very quick to get me replacement grips. Now one of my grips are starting to act up and I am constantly pushing down on them for them to stay in place. When the grips start to wear the beautiful look to the 2215 starts to diminish. xboxlord But how do we know that these grips won't also fall off or start getting loose? I'm not saying I know what it is like, I am just saying those metal ones don't look very comfortable. Maybe HP should release some colour grips, that would be kinda neat. whitelyt Well we wouldn't know. I am sure that Pocket PC Techs will make a review available for us to make a judgment call. tomtrauma I'm with Xbox, let HP make a better mouse trap. I also think that colors would be a nice bonus. Mine are still there but I do have one side that keeps creaping up at one end....... whitelyt As far as I'm concerned I don't care where better grips come from whether it is HP or PPC Techs. HP could surely make better grips but for as long as the 2215 been on the market I would highly doubt that HP would ever look at something like that when their minds are on future products. So what happens now is that if you have a 2215 that goes out of warranty and you need replacement grips, you will have to buy the package from HP. Surely if you retire your 2215 then that won't be a problem. But for some that might use it over an extended period of time continuing to pay for rubber grips is going out the world backwards IMO. xboxlord I would highly doubt that HP would ever look at something like that when their minds are on future products. HP is a very responsible company. I don't think that they only look forward to see if they can get new products out better, but I know they also help customers with older products. In October last year, I had a problem with my old Jornada 565 and it was still under warranty (I loved buying a 3 year replacement plan) so they sent me a brand new model. In fact, they didn't have any 565's in stock, so they sent me a 568 because that was all they had (the only difference is 64MB RAM asopposed to 32MB. The point is that even with old products, they helped their consumers because they realize service is important. allklrnoflr I think it's a great idea and hopefully others follow suit and give us more options. Can't remember which site I was on but someone actually made wooden replacement grips. Looked real classy. xboxlord If they were wooden grips with a nice finish like they have in luxury cars, that would be sweet. Or maybe nice leather grips would look good. Now that I look at the metal grips, it looks like there is a screw that holds them in. I didn't think this screw was on the original, was it? V-Man I saw the wooden grips also. Unfortunately, the guy who made them only made a set for himself and had no plans or intentions of making any for distribution. They looked great though. I think he used rosewood and finished them beautifully. Wish I could get a pair like that. If I bookmarked the site at home, I will edit this post and add the url. V-Man JmE Here is the link that contains both the PocketPCPassion link and the Brighthand link. :) http://www.ipaqhq.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=755 -JmE- allklrnoflr The one from pocket pc passion look much classier like the woodtrim you see in a car. The screw on the metal ones looks a little frankenstein, like I said I just hope this motivates others to come up with things like this. TLC I personally think that the metal grips look pretty cool! xboxlord I don't personally mind the look of them, because I love the brushed metal look, however, the grooves for the fingers look to have sharp edges and different people with different hands will have difficulty with that. Cheryl I don't think there is a single product that everyone likes or uses. So that's ok. I think they look sharp, too. But I also like the original grips and have had no problems with them so I will probably not change them. allklrnoflr alright I take it back, they just updated their website these come in three different colors and they look real sharp. xboxlord I do agree, the black looks very nice, but they haven't removed those sharp looking edges. whitelyt Edges might look sharp but I highly doubt that it is. I think that they look very sharp (good) and I like the option of getting them in different colors. I am wondering if they will be offering discounts initially for them. whitelyt For those that have not seen the updated page, here is more info on the grips.... iPAQ 2200 Do-It-Yourself Kits (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/i2200diykit.asp) Cheryl Ooh..they do look very nice. But I don't think I want to spend $40 to give my 2215 a new look. whitelyt Originally posted by Cheryl Ooh..they do look very nice. But I don't think I want to spend $40 to give my 2215 a new look. Yeah, it would be nice to see a special introductory offer.... tomtrauma The new colors would really be a nice additon to a great PPC. The price is a little high as you all stated, I would be interested if the price were a little lower whitelyt Because of requests by many customers, PPC Techs have added a silver Side Cover kit to the list! The kits are expected to start shipping 3/5/2004 or sooner. iPAQ 2200 Do-It-Yourself Kits (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/i2200diykit.asp) allklrnoflr Lucky to be a 2200 owner right now, I have also read that they are trying to add a flip cover to fit with the custom grips. No case with protection is great, makes me kind of miss the flip cover that came with my Clie TG-50 Cheryl That would be nice. The kids or the dog got ahold of my Sena case *boohoo* so I am in the market for a new case. A flip would be great! Cheryl Originally posted by whitelyt Because of requests by many customers, PPC Techs have added a silver Side Cover kit to the list! The kits are expected to start shipping 3/5/2004 or sooner. iPAQ 2200 Do-It-Yourself Kits (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/i2200diykit.asp) I don't see the appeal of the silver side covers. It just looks kind of blah. But that's just me. I kind of like the blue myself :). vBulletin v3.0.1, Copyright ©2000-2004, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.

But think of it this way: With these grips on your 22xx series iPAQ, if you were looking to resell (especially on eBay), you would have a leg up on the competition: a Modded iPAQ. News Email a Search with IceRocket Posted by: KevinCTofel Posted on: Monday, August 02 @ 12:48:12 CDT IceRocket.com is another internet search engine in the market, competing with the likes of Yahoo, Google, AltaVista and others. Engadget ran a small information piece today describing a truly nice feature that could be useful for PDA and SmartPhone usage: search by e-mail. Here's how it works according to IceRocket: "Icerocket.com offers the easiest way to search from your handheld device. If you are looking to search the web, news, or pictures IceRocket has a solution for you. All you have to do is send a blank e-mail with your search term in the subject line and within seconds you will receive a response with the results you need." The first pic shows how you submit your search request....just put your search term(s) in the subject line. The second pic shows the results that are e-mailed back. I did the "vain" thing and sent an e-mail search of my name....just to see how long it would take to get the results. I received an e-mail with the first 5 hits within 60 seconds, which I think is very reasonable. There is also a link to click for additional hits. Part of me says, "If I'm already on-line to search the web, why not just do the search via the web?", but another part of me says "Nice feature!". What do you think, would you use this? Send to a Friend Printer Friendly Page News Jokes of the Day Posted by: Justin Posted on: Sunday, August 01 @ 20:55:02 CDT Negotiations between union members and their employer were at an impasse. The union denied that their workers were flagrantly abusing the sick-leave provisions set by their contract. One morning at the bargaining table, the companys cheif negotiator held aloft the morning edition of the newspaper. "This man," he announced, "called in sick yesterday!" There on the sports page, was a photo of the supposedly ill employee, who had just won a local gould tournament with an excellent score. A union negotiator broke the silence in the room. "Wow!" he said. "Just think of the score he could have had if he wasn't sick!" Only in Real Life... As a higway patrolman, you hear many excuses by those caught speeding. Once, the driver ran back to my patrol unit to tell me someone in his car was sick and that he was taking her to the hospital. I let the man go, but was suspicious when he declined my offer of a police escort. I decided to follow him. By the time we reached the emergency entrance of the local hospital, I was feeling a little folish about not trusting the man. When I noticed he was having difficulty getting an elderly woman out of the passenger door, I ran over to offer my assistance. It was then that I overheard the struggling woman say, "Leave me alone! You told him someone was sick, so you be the sick one!" That is when I wrote the ticket. -Justin. Discuss in the Forums Read More... Send to a Friend Printer Friendly Page Pocket PCs What do you want from Pocket PC Tools? Posted by: Justin Posted on: Sunday, August 01 @ 20:43:01 CDT PocketPCTools has grown over the last year or so, giving you up to date news and some laughs along the way, but really, how can we make our site different to encourage people signing up and reading our posts more than other sites? We do realize that many sites can be the same with the same look, same feel, and the same news. We want to customize PPCTools to accommodate the ever growing diversity of people and their specific needs. This is were you come in. Design: PocketPCTools looks ok, right? But how can we make it better? What improvements would you like to see? Many designs look familiar and how can we make ours more user friendly and more neat and tidy? We would like to hear some feedback on the design, maybe a colour change or making things aligned? The front page was made over slightly a while back, mainly with a new logo and sidebars, but if you do notice, the boarders in black around the tabs don't match up with the blue colour. These are things that need to be fixed, and while we do this, what else would you suggest? Reviews: When it comes to reviews, we really don't have very many. Do you want to see more reviews and more Running Reviews? If the Running Reviews become popular we can instate those with more admins participating and then we can incorporate logos and buttons in that module. What do you say? What items do you want to see reviewed more? Would you like software or hardware and what type of each? Navigation: The navigation around Pocket PC Tools has been good, not too many complaints here so far. Is there any bugs or error messages that you get that we can fix when you go around the site or are any pictures not working? Is the forum not logging you in properly or can you not see new posts or posts that have been replied too? If you have any problems, please tell us! Self improvement will make this site much more professional, more enjoyable and hopefully more popular. All in all, I do think that you can expect to see changes within the next month or so, and if you have any ideas at all please post them in this forum so that we can try to incorporate them into the design and clean up stage. Thanks, The PocketPCTools Team Discuss in the Forums Read More... Send to a Friend Printer Friendly Page Toshiba/Audiovox The Toshiba e830 appears to be for real! Posted by: signothefish Posted on: Friday, July 30 @ 17:15:01 CDT jacdoc05 in the Pocket PC Thoughts forum was doing some research on FCC approval for upcoming Pocket PC devices, and stumbled across some recent grants. One has the FCC ID of GKRP5TH6300, which appears to be the HP H6300 and the other has an ID of GKRPPCE830W. The e800 had an ID of GKRPPCE800W, and was granted on September 19th, 2003. The device with an ID of GKRPPCE830W, which I am assuming to be the rumored Toshiba e830, had two Digital Transmission System (DTS) devices with description " Pocket PC With 802.11b and Bluetooth Transmitters " granted on July 28th, 2004. Plus, the FCC label has the following inscription: " Toshiba Pocket PC e830 ". In fact, it appears one device will be a Bluetooth version and the other a Bluetooth/WiFi version. Could this be the elusive e830? I'm willing to bet so. Discuss in the Forums [6 Replies] Read More... Send to a Friend Printer Friendly Page HP/Compaq iPAQ HP's official response to WM2003SE Posted by: barry Posted on: Friday, July 30 @ 12:48:49 CDT A while ago, we reported that HP was not going to make Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition upgrades available to existing iPAQ owners. Needless to say, many of you were in an uproar about it and a petition to "make" HP offer this was set up (not by us). We at Pocket PC Tools wanted to know the real reasons as to why HP is not making this upgrade available, so we asked. This morning, we got an official response. One quote from the response is as follows: " Why from time to time, does HP decide not to offer operating system upgrades? HP reviews and evaluates all Microsoft releases to determine compatibility on its handheld devices. Not every product that HP introduces can successfully be upgraded to new or updated Operating Systems. Some of the reasons are ROM size, hardware limitations, and 3rd party application incompatibility. Some features that new operating systems and applications contain would require hardware component changes that are not always feasible in the existing device design layout." Whether it’s a case to protect your investment from the hard knocks of everyday use, earphones that spare you the agony of a tangled mess, or a TV to catch up on the daily news—they enrich our user experience. Here’s some of the best hardware I’ve discovered over the past few months. For more hardware picks you can also read my Bluetooth Fever article (on page 36) for some Bluetooth connectivity favorites that I’ve found recently. CF card TV Tuner Watching TV on a Pocket PC is finally a reality! This accessory adds a TV tuner, an A/V input, and an RF input via a Type I CompactFlash card interface. Not only can you watch over-the-air and cable TV broadcasts, you can play videos from an external source such as a VCR, DVD player, or camcorder, in either landscape or portrait mode. The telescoping antenna folds away, and a carrying pouch is included. The tuner is powered by 4 AAA alkaline batteries. It’s available in PAL or NTSC versions, and I’m told by the company that they are working on a Windows XP driver, which should be available in a month or two, for use with notebooks and Tablet PCs. DRY PAK is a waterproof pouch that will hold most PDAs, GPS units, or cell phones. The nice thing about it is that you can operate the device while it’s inside the pouch; even talk and listen through it. It’s made of strong, durable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that is not affected by extreme heat and cold, it’s watertight down to 60 feet, and it floats. I haven’t actually tested the “60 feet” claim, but the pouch seems very solid and well made. It comes with an adjustable neck lanyard and a belt clip. DRY PAK Use With: P/PC, P/PC 2002, Smartphone, and Windows Mobile 2003 Price: $14.99 URL: http://www.drypakcase.com iPAQ 2200 replacement side covers I’m told that the side covers sometimes fall off of the iPAQ h2200. These side covers each have two finger-grip indentations and are textured for extra “grippability.” They come as a complete kit with tools and instructions for easy do-it-yourself installation. The cords extend to a maximum of 47 inches and retract into a small spool when not in use. You have to remember to pull on both ends at the same time when you’re extending them, or they’ll jam. Other than that, this accessory works quite well and produces clear sound. It works with most PDAs that have 3.5 mm stereo headphone jacks. JAVOeBuds eliminate tangled headphone cords. PocketPCTechs Anodized Aluminum Grips for iPaq h2200 Series Since PocketPCTechs announced the new h2200 series replacement grips many users have been asking the same question: Can these grips be used with an InnoPocket Aluminum Case ? To answer this question PocketPCTechs sent me a replacement kit. The installation process is very simple if you follow the instructions provided by PocketTech. The first thing to do is to remove the old grips. To do that hold the unit between both hands and apply pressure to the middle and bottom of rubber grip and push it towards the top of the unit. Once the grips has moved about 1/8" pull the grip up and remove it from it's original place. Having both grips removed you will see two screws (one in each side) near to the top, using the Torx T-06 tool provided by PocketPCTechs remove both screws. The new anodized aluminum grips are left & right keyed based on the screws hole and cover extensions, so it's impossible to install the right one in the left size of your h2200. The installation is simple, insert the bottom tip of the replacement grip in to the unit and them seat it slowly until the screw hole is properly aligned. Right side grip. Two longer screws are provided in the kit (really there are 3 screws counting an extra one just in case you lose one) to replace the original screws. Using the Torx tool insert them. Be sure that you do not over tight. h2215 with new anodized aluminum grips installed. Even without having finished the installation I already knew the answer to my question of could I use these grips with my InnoPocket Case? Inserting the h2200 in the case. h2215 with the Anodized Aluminum Grips installed and using the InnoPocket Aluminum Case. The answer is YES. Both accessories can be used together without any problem. Conclusion : The Anodized Aluminum Grips from PocketPCTech are very well made and in my opinion is a solution that will last for ever in your h2215. I got a second pare of rubber grips from HP and they were falling already from my h2215, this second pare was free because the unit was under warranty but my question is how long HP will send me free grips? Is there anything I don't like from this solution, yes, the price. I still think that 40 dollars is more than what any one would like to pay for this kind of solution even if it's the perfect solution, and it's the perfect solution, I don't have any doubt about it. Would I recommend the Anodized Aluminum Grips to h2215 owners? Yes, if you have the money and you want to put an end of this situation of your rubber grips falling from your Pocket PC this is the best way to go. Finally I would like to Thanks Leonard from PocketPCTech for sending me the grips used in this review. PC Counselor's Rating Back Hit Counter

Gadgeteer Hands On Review : iPAQ HP2200 Series Clear Case by Julie Strietelmeier D ate: 01/21/2004 Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Product Requirements: Device: HP 2200 series iPAQ Remember when the coolest thing in the world was a clear replacement shell for your Palm Pilot or Palm III series PDA? I don't think I've ever seen a clear shell for a Pocket PC, but for those of you that are into such things, I have something that may suffice: A clear case for HP2200 series iPAQ from SuntekStore . This clam shell style case is made from crystal clear durable plastic and is molded perfectly for the HP2200. The PDA snaps into the bottom half of the case and is held there by two posts which lock into the two slots on the back side of the PDA. Once snapped into place, the cover can then close perfectly over the front of the PDA. Cutouts in the cover exist for the power button, applications buttons and navigation button. The case is a little too thick to allow for easy button access though. This is especially true for the small power button cutout, which is almost impossible to press with your fingertip. The navigation button is the easiest of all the buttons to use while the cover is closed. Game players that are interested in this case will probably opt to play with the cover open instead of closed. Opening the cover is a little tricky. I found that the easiest way to open it was to place two or three fingers in the large button cutout area and press down while lifting up with my thumb hooked around the bottom cover's ledge. When opened, the cover can flip around a full 360 degrees. It isn't very comfortable to hold it completely folded under the PDA, but having it hanging behind your hand as your hold it, is a nice way to get it out of your way. The back half of the case has holes for the speaker and reset switch, while the top has an open area over the compact flash slot. This allows you to keep an oversized CF card plugged in while the cover is closed. There is also a cutout for the earphone jack and stylus. The cutout for the stylus is pretty much useless though. There is a small plastic lever built into the back of the case that you can use to pop the stylus up. The problem is that the stylus doesn't pop up far enough to grab hold of. Not only that, the little lever thingy fell out the 2nd time I tried to use it. Basically, you'll want to use a separate stylus with this case. The play through aspect of the Clear Case is convenient and the style itself is unique. With a price tag of less than $20, you really can't go too wrong with this case. Just make sure you buy a multi-pen stylus to use with it. Price: $18.95 Pros: See through, play through Cons: Buttons hard to press when cover is closed Stylus is not accessible Can's sync/charge with cradle Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say.
