The reason it was in the closet was that I hadn't used it for a while, and apparently I didn't shut off the switch on the bottom of the unit, which is something you're supposed to do if you're not going to use the iPAQ for a while. As a result, the battery was dead. In addition, I had a number of other Pocket PCs to use, so the need to get this one working again, which would have cost US$100 plus the cost of shipping to HP/Compaq, just wasn't there. I mentioned in the paragraph above that I had other Pocket PCs to use. One of those Pocket PCs is also an iPAQ. This one is the model 3670, and before it also lost its battery life I was using it with the CF expansion pack and the D-Link DCF-650W to connect to the 'Net wirelessly through my home LAN. Well, one day the iPAQ decided that it just couldn't hold the charge for more than about 5 minutes while checking e-mail. Needless to say, I now had two dead iPAQs on my hands. My initial thought was to call HP and see if for some strange reason I could cheaply have this problem fixed. Turns out that after a call to tech support it was pretty clear that I needed a new battery for each of the iPAQs. I was debating what to do when the tech dude suggested that I type in "IPAQ REPAIR" or something similar into a search engine. He mentioned that HP would charge me $100, but that I could probably get a "do-it-yourself" kit for much cheaper. Thanks, HP Tech Support dude! I sent a number of e-mails out to sites offering an iPAQ repair kit to see if I could review one of these kits. Included in that list was iPAQRepair.com (clever name, no?) and LaptopsForLess.com . These two sites in particular responded relatively quickly, and as a result I had iPAQRepair send me two repair kits and LaptopsForLess.com send me what's called the Power Runner Energy Bank, a little Universal Portable Power Battery. You'll hear more about the Power Runner Energy Bank in another review. Basically, I'm currently using it to charge one of the iPAQs since I only have one adapter. I should also mention that LaptopsForLess.com was willing to send me a repair kit, but I had already received the ones from iPAQRepair.com. The kit that Jim Nipp from iPAQRepair.com sent me can be found on the iPAQRepair.com website. It's described like this: Original OEM 1000mAh Battery - This is probably the easiest repair to perform yourself. This kit comes complete with detailed instructions (complete with pictures). It sells for $57.50. What I failed to realize until opening the kit was that I was going to need a T6 Torx driver (a special screwdriver, that is). Figuring I had every tool imaginable for electronics I tore through my collection ... but couldn't find what I needed. The instructions that come with the kit mention that Sears sells them for about $4, so I searched the Sears website and found a number of kits carrying the T6. In the end I went to a local hardware store which had a T6 for $1.50. For whatever reason, RadioShack carries Torx screwdrivers but not the T6. I should also mention that iPAQRepair.com does sell the T6 Torx Screwdriver for $5, though I think since I could buy one for $1.50 they could be purchased by iPAQRepair in bulk and included in the kit. I'd pay $60 knowing that I had everything I need to do the repair. So anyway, I got the screwdriver and started following the instructions step-by-step. The first iPAQ I opened worked as described, except that during the process a part fell out of the PDA. The instructions reference the Switch board door coming loose, but in my case it was actually a cover that went over the bottom of the stylus locking mechanism. I had to open the other iPAQ to figure out where this random part went. It only happened to one of the iPAQs so I think it was a fluke. inside the iPAQ If you're wondering how truly easy it is to replace an iPAQ battery, here's a quick rundown: 1. Remove the screws that secure the iPAQ covers together. 2. Use the stylus from inside the stylus hole to gently press against the inside of the rear cover of the case to help separate it. 3. Use a plastic knife to disengage the plastic snaps around the edges of the case. iPAQ opened close-up on insides 4. Carefully pull the edges apart, but be careful not to disengage the battery from its connector plug on the motherboard of the iPAQ. The only reason for the warning is that you want to be able to see where to plug the battery in again. If you don't look, there are pictures in the guide which make it pretty self explanatory. battery cable 5. Use the plastic knife to pry the battery off the back cover. It's attached using double-stick tape. 6. Slide the new battery in place and secure it to the tape. 7. Plug the battery back into the main board. 8. Carefully position the rear cover assembly so that the main board can be pulled up slightly and the large connector passed through the opening in the iPAQ rear cover. This is probably the hardest part, only because if you don't do it right you could snap some plastic. I didn't do it right a couple of times, but no plastic was snapped, thankfully. 9. Close up the iPAQ and put the screws back in. finishing up 9 steps and the iPAQ is brand new again! Given how easy it is to replace your own battery, there's no reason to send your iPAQ to HP if you can buy this kit for a mere $57.50 and in about 10 minutes have a new battery. 3670 holding a charge 3650 charging Ratings Defense For Quality I gave the kit from iPAQRepair 4.5 Geekheads out of 5. I took a half a Geekhead off because I had to go out and find a T6 screwdriver. Since it was only $1.50 I figure it can be included in the kit so that people have everything they need right out of the box. I've already expressed this to Jim Nipp. For Geekness I gave the iPAQRepair kit a solid 5 Geekheads out of 5. The instructions are very detailed and even include pictures with pointers. I was afraid of snapping the iPAQ, but once I read the instructions I barreled through the installation in a matter of minutes. Since it brought new life to my dead iPAQs, I give the iPAQRepair.com's kit a definite Geek.com Pick ! Gadgeteer Hands On Review : Belkin Flip-Top iPAQ Hard Case by Julie Strietelmeier D ate: 03/18/2003 Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Product Requirements: Device: iPAQ 38,and 3900 series Pocket PCs Now here's an interesting case for the iPAQ, the Belkin Flip-Top Hard Case. This case offers something that no other hard cases (that I've seen to date) have to offer. A flip top design with a pop up stylus holder. Made of ABS plastic, with a metallic looking finish, the Flip-Top is compatible with the 3800 and 3900 series iPAQ Pocket PCs. The PDA is easily inserted into the case and is held there securely. Unfortunately, the plastic that encases the PDA, also covers the reset switch, SD card slot and more importantly, the serial port. To sync and charge, you'll need to remove the iPAQ from the case. This case is also quite a bit more bulky then other hard cases available for the iPAQ. Although it doesn't add much to the width of the PDA, it is quite a bit longer. The plastic is pretty sturdy though and would probably withstand back pocket usage for most people (if it would actually fit in your back pocket). That's the bad. The good is the fact that this case totally encloses the PDA when the cover is shut. As such, it should do a good job protecting the iPAQ from dust, dirt and everyday abuse. The cover is held closed by a plastic latch. This closure method is quite secure and would not come open on its own no matter how hard I shook the case. When opened, you have excellent access to the screen and buttons. Game players will not feel cramped at all. They may feel a little distracted by the stylus pointing up at them though. A plastic stylus holder is built into the hinge of the Flip-Top case. When the cover opens, the stylus pops up ready to be retrieved and used. When the cover is closed, the stylus folds down to rest on the front of the PDA. No worries though, the stylus does not touch the screen. The Flip-Top is an ok case. It isn't one that I would typically use as my everyday case, but I would use it as a travel case to protect my iPAQ while in another bag. If you don't mind the bulk and the fact that you have to remove it to sync/charge, then you might appreciate its other features. Price: $29.99 Pros: The iPAQ is completely enclosed when cover is shut Nifty stylus pop up design Cons: Must remove from holster to sync/charge with cradle or cable. Reset switch not accessible SD card slot not accessible Bulky Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Back to Main Page.
