HP offers a replacement kit but response has been mixed. Fortunately, Pocket PC Techs came to everyone's rescue with a do-it-yourself kit that provides an alternative solution. In a nutshell, rather than clipping into place, Pocket PC Techs' solution is to secure the grips with screws. In itself, that might prove enough of a selling feature but Pocket PC Techs went further and the grips they offer are available in 4 very cool metallic shades. The kit Contents of the kit The whole kit comes in a small plastic pouch and includes the two grips (left and right), 3 screws, a size T-6Torx screwdriver and instructions. So what's so special about these grips? They are made with anodized aircraft quality aluminum and feature two finger grips that are textured for extra gripping power. In the illustration to the left, you can see the two grips. The left one shows the right side up and the right now is upside down. Note the small hole at the top of each grip. Four colours are available: Black, blue, red and silver. The conversion This modification is very easy and should take you no more than 15 minutes. You first remove the existing grips by popping them off (or removing the duct tape big grin icon ). Then, you remove two screws. You then slip on the new grips and fasten them in place with the screws provided in the kit. The screws provided in the kit are longer and fasten to the iPAQ through the grips rather than under. And you're done. Yes, it's that easy! Step 1 - Removing the old grips The rubber handrips have been removed Done - New grips installed New grips installed How do they work? I really like my new grips. And with them comes the peace of mind that they won't fall off. The metal does not offer the same level of grip as the rubber ones but the finger grips help. I think it will take me a little time to get used to them though as I am used to holding my iPAQ a little higher up on the sides. For those of us in colder climes (Toronto's spring is just starting!), the grips are definitely cold to the touch. It surprised me the first time until I reminded myself that the iPAQ's case is actually plastic (even if it looks like metal). The quality of the grips left me very impressed - They fit snugly even before getting screwed on and the screw hole lines up perfectly. Pros Very high quality Easy installation Superior solution to HP's replacement grips Cons Somewhat pricey Rating Rating: 10 out of 10 iPAQs Summary I am generally not one to modify my gear. If it works, then the way it looks is not as important. But I'm having to revise this philosophy now. The main selling point is the fact that the grips won't fall off but I would be lying if I said that my iPAQ does not look a lot cooler now. If you look at the price of this kit as a cosmetic upgrade only, it is slightly pricey ($39.99 USD). Factor in the peace of mind that you get from knowing that your grips will not fall off and the price becomes much more attractive. Where can I get these grips? You can purchase this kit and other Pocket PC Techs accessories at Pocket PC Techs ' web site. Discuss this review in the iPAQabilities forums . Dave's iPAQ > Previous HP iPAQ Models > HP iPAQ 22xx Discussion > 2215 replacement grips!!! View Full Version : 2215 replacement grips!!! nategesner HP finally listened and is providing replacement grips for the Ipaq 2215. The kit includes the grips and some other things, though I'm not sure what. The technician thought it included the battery compartment cover and a new carrying case, but couldn't confirm that for me. I simply called HP tech support, they confirmed I was still under warranty, and then put it in the mail. I already received an e-mail that it shipped. Here's the instructions for ordering and replacing, directly from the HP web site: Please note that, if the side grips (Spare Part Number 349036-001) of your iPAQ Pocket PC h2200 unit are damaged due to a defective slip case, the side grips and slip case can be replaced by you. The replacement side grips and slip case can be ordered by you, please contact our Technical Support at 1-800-652-6672, options 3, 1 (enter 10 digit phone number), 2. If you are a first time caller, your phone number will not be registered in the database. You will need to enter your phone number twice and then wait for the routing center to put you through to a Technical Support Specialist. To remove the defective side grip(s), complete the following steps: 1. Hold the iPAQ pocket PC on its side with the side grip facing up and the Secure Digital (SD)/Compact Flash (CF) card slots pointing away from you. Note: Ensure that the side grip is free from any oils or slippery substances that may prevent proper grasp during this removal procedure. 2. With your right thumbnail, press firmly and hold the lower (pointed) end of the side grip. (This will help release the locking tab underneath the side grip.) Caution: Ensure that no pressure is exerted on the display panel. Exerting pressure on the display may result in damage to the display. 3. Place your left thumb on the middle of the side grip (helps to disengage the four contact tabs underneath the side grip more effectively) and slide the side grip up about 1/8th inch. 4. Lift off the side grip. You can also view the video to remove/replace the h2200 Side Grip, please visit the following link: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handheldipaq/us/locate/105_5721.html David Smith Thanks for the detailed instructions! David Jack Terrific post Nate! I have heard from several folks that have had the "grip" problem. It is nice to know that they now have a pretty good solution! nategesner I just received the package today. New grips and a new battery compartment cover. Is the battery compartment cover causing folks problems? Anyway, the grips are a "snap" to put in. However, once they were in, I notice that my Ipaq is a little thinner and can now slip out of my metal case (Innopocket) when the lid is open. Strange, but I'm still happy! rscanady One of the retaining tabs broke on my battery compartment cover one day, at the time there was no replacement, so its good to know that you can get one now....however its nothing that a $2 tube of super glue wont fix either.....just my $.02 Jack PPC Techs have released a Do-It-Yourself Replacement Cover Kit. The kit contains detailed, fully illustrated instructions and all the tools & components needed to replace the side grips. Each kit contains: 1. Torx screwdriver, size T-6, to remove and install the case/cover screws. 2. 3 longer replacement screws to mount the side covers. (An extra screw in case one is lost during install) 3. A left and right cover. It seems a bit pricey to me but they look good on especially if the ones you had are gone! rscanady Just to clarify, the do it yourself kit grips are anodized aluminum, not rubber like the originals, they are pretty nice looking, and come in other colors (red and blue, I think). Does anyone have these yet, if so, share with the rest of us. Ben Last summer I broke the battery cover on my 2210. HP cust. service didn't even have it available as a replacement part so they sent me a whole new PPC. Jack Now that is the customer service you like to hear about!! Black plastic, and snap on the same way. This is a 'fix'? HP will go the way of Compaq, I predict. I'll wait to see how long these last... but I predict I'll need to order (and pay for) the anodized aluminum clips I saw in an ad. Jack See how they well they work...if you have trouble, consider the pocket pc techs reference I listed above. I have only heard positive comments so far...well, would you expect any thing else from pocket pc techs? They are very good! Scott W I had replacements from HP and they were better than the originals but still not great. They never started breaking or falling off completely, but they did scoot up slightly from putting the PDA in my holster case so I just got the anodized aluminum ones from PPC techs. Pricey, yeah, but they will last forever and never come off. And they look a lot better than the cheezy rubber ones also. I only wish the silver ones had been available when I ordered mine...
