here A doctor in a hospital hallway using a tablet pc - Medical Marvel by Aileen
Dale Jul. 2004 -- Doctor visits are changing, and you're going to like the
difference. The combination of HP mobile computer technology and electronic
medical records solutions in hospitals, clinics and doctor's offices is giving
doctors new power to provide you better care and hold down medical costs.
Through secure, wireless networks and the use of the HP Compaq Tablet PC and HP
iPAQ Pocket PC, physicians can access up-to-the-minute patient information, lab
reports and prescription information. They can take or dictate notes during
exams and not wait days for medical transcriptions to be returned. They can also
research medical conditions on Web sites, check for drug interactions and the
latest in medical research. And they can do all of this in the examination room
with you. That's good news for you and your doctor. With information always at
hand, your doctor saves time, improves the efficiency of care and may even be
able to spend more time with you as well as see more patients during the work
day. Best of all, it means your doctor has instant access to information needed
to provide you with quality care. A medical revolution At Central Utah
Multi-Specialty Clinic in Provo, Utah, 59 physicians in eight locations use the
HP iPAQ h4150 and the Allscripts TouchWorks mEMR software to access patient
information right in the exam room. "When doctors leave the exam room, all of
the documentation is done, test orders have been submitted and prescriptions are
filled," says Jamie Steck, IT director. "The same thing happens with tests. We
often get results from the imaging center even before the patient gets home." In
just one year, the technology has saved the clinic $1 million and enabled its
doctors to spend 25 percent more time with patients. Cost savings in this
rapidly expanding clinic come from not investing in additional PCs in exam rooms
or building large rooms to house patient charts. In New Jersey, more than 300
doctors with University Physicians Associates (UPA) are using the HP iPAQ Pocket
PC with software from MedAptus to capture patient charges and ensure compliance
with government regulations. UPA doctors face less paperwork, are assured of
more accuracy in their patient charges and are more aware of treatments being
provided by other physicians within their group, says UPA Executive Director
Michael Saulich. "This is especially important to patients with serious
illnesses who are being treated by multiple doctors." Doctors with a Tablet PC
The ultra-mobile PC that adapts to the way you work. At CapitalCare Medical
Group, a primary care practice in Albany, N.Y., William Busino Jr., M.D., says
that recording patient notes on the HP Tablet PC while he's in the exam room is
saving his six-physician office $5,000 monthly and reducing by as much as
several days the time it takes to receive voice transcriptions. "Previously, if
a patient had a problem and another physician had to cover the call, the most
current information might not be available," he says. Dr. Stephen Fischer, a
general practitioner in Spring, Texas, and his nurse both use the HP Tablet PC
with a wireless network to manage patient flow, create patient records, send
messages to staff members, arrange prescription refills and keep up with all the
documentation that's required in a medical practice. "I think the Tablet PC will
revolutionize medicine," Fischer says. "It's going to change the way doctors
work. It's simply the best productivity tool that has ever come out for the
medical industry. " Tablet PCs from HP are making their way into hospitals, too.
El Camino Hospital, a 426-bed facility in Mountain View, Calif., recently began
equipping its admitting physicians - known as hospitalists - with HP Tablet PCs
connected to the hospital's Eclypsis e7000 clinical information system. "Studies
show how immediate data input at the bedside produces better outcomes for
patients," says CIO Mark Zielazinski. "Big computers at the bedside aren't
practical and specialized devices have failed. For the first time, the Tablet PC
makes bedside input viable." Saving lives with faster response Doctor with
cellular EKG iPAQ Cardiologist Paul Campbell of NorthEast Medical is part of a
team using the HP iPAQ Pocket PC to accelerate care to heart attack patients.
One of the most dramatic uses of handheld technology is happening at NorthEast
Medical Center in Concord, N.C. Thanks to a new digitized cardiac and imaging
information system based on the HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5550, cardiologists receive
data from county paramedics to enable them to remotely diagnose potential heart
attack victims and accelerate potentially life-saving heart angioplasty. The
technology enabled the hospital to reduce its "door-to-dilation" time to 27
minutes. That's the time between a patient's arrival at the cardiac
catheterization lab and the successful completion of angioplasty. "We've
experienced the satisfying results of when mobile technology, people,
communications and careful planning work together to save lives," says
cardiologist Paul Campbell. So how will you react when your doctor starts
carrying a computer instead of a clipboard? "My patients tend to be fascinated
by the Tablet PC," says CapitalCare's Busino. "I'll frequently show them what
I'm doing on the screen." He even uses the HP Tablet PC to display images to
help patients understand a medical condition or treatment option. Your feedback

"Great for Med and Rx students!" Rxwannabe12 on 15-Jun-2003 12:42:43 PM Pros: As
a pharmacy student, I purchased the 1910 for the primary reason of having a
portable and reliable PDA for my rotations. I need to have multiple drug and
information databases available to me at the touch of the stylus, and this
machine delivers. Not only do all medical PC prgrams load and work like a charm
(with an expansion memory card), my machine is the envy of every other health
profession student I run into. I laugh as they fumble with their huge Axims or
even HP Journadas, and they turn green with envy when I whip out my 1910 and
have pulled up information before they have their machine out of its clunky
case. It is easy to slip into a lab coat, I can tell no difference between my
200 mHz and their 400 mHz for my needs, and the display is magnificent. I have
had nothing but good experiences with HP tech support (I have an HP PC as well)
which is more than I can say for other companies. I would highly recommend it to
any med, dental, or pharmacy student. The PDA trend is exploding in our fields,
and the 1910 is a great tool to be up to date with current technology in the
hospital setting. Cons: The product did not come with a case or a cradle, which
is really not that huge of a deal people make it out to be. I purchased a case
for $11 online at a PDA case website, and it is black leather, high quality, and
works great. (It is not huge, bulky, and zippered like the Axim case.) I went
ahead and bought the cradle for $50 extra, and I don't even NEED it! Everything
can be easily synced in minuted via USB, and I don't even have to take my PDA
out of the case. Charging I do the same way, but the cradle works just as well
for that, more protective I suppose. Overall I have no significant complaints AT
ALL. My only suggestion to any potential buyer is to buy directly from HP
online. It may be $10 more in price than Best Buy, but if you want quality
service along with this quality product that is the way to go. "Great for my
needs" Pfunpfrau on 11-Jul-2003 07:16:06 PM Pros: I needed something to keep my
calendar and contacts in as well as a quick and easy way to make an occasional
note. This has filled the bill for nearly a year now. I have had no problem
syncing with my laptop and keeping up to date in both places. Cons: The Word and
Excel programs are really pretty limited. I sure wouldn't want to try and do too
much on the ppc. I have had it crash a couple times for no apparent reason but
that isn't too bad for a computer of any kind. So I do recommend regularly
syncing with your computer in case you loose something. All in all I would buy
it again. Read more user opinions | Write your own review Rate this product:

The HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5450 HP moves to solidify its dominance of the high-end
Pocket PC market by introducing a powerful and versatile new iPAQ Pocket PC By
Dale Coffing Search site Search Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories Browse
Encyclopedia I got to test drive the new HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5450 recently. This
beauty has Intel's PXA250 (400 MHz) processor and comes with 64 MB RAM and 48 MB
ROM (20 MB of which is accessible to the user). Its beautiful 64K color
transflective TFT screen is the brightest display available on any Pocket PC.
And the built-in SDIO card slot lets you add storage memory or I/O devices.
Finally, there are a variety of integrated wireless features, including
Bluetooth, 802.11 Wi-Fi, and consumer infrared functionality. Aware of Dell's
entry into the market, HP introduced the $300 h1910 Pocket PC described below .
But wisely, they also decided to play to their strong suit and continue to
innovate in the high-end Pocket PC market. Toshiba beat them off the line with
the e740, a 400 MHz device with SD and CF card slots and built-in 802.11b
wireless capability. I was impressed with the e740 and wrote about it in the
November 2002 issue of Pocket PC magazine ( www.PocketPCmag.com/Nov02/e740.asp
). In its day—3 months ago—the Toshiba e740 was at the head of the pack.
However, HP refused to stand still and the h5450 has retaken the pole position
with a feature/benefit mix that can't be beat—for now! I had the opportunity to
be one of the very first to put a pre-production unit of the h5450 through its
paces. "hp" logo replaces "Compaq" The first thing I noticed about the h5450 was
the new HP branding. Gone is the Compaq logo, replaced on this and all future
iPAQs with the lower case "hp" logo. While this change really doesn't affect the
performance of the iPAQ, it does bear witness to the fact the Compaq, the
company that captured the Pocket PC high ground with the original iPAQ H3600, is
finally gone. There are some obvious physical changes in the device compared to
previous versions of the iPAQ. The black plastic "hat" on the top of the device
is thinner and covers more of the top. And it now houses three extra LED
indicator lights, one each for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transceivers, the third
is unused; but I would venture to say it will be used in the future for WAN
radio. The screen, application launch buttons, and navigation pad have been
repositioned to make room for the unique biometric fingerprint reader. Finally—a
user-replaceable battery! Whether it was deserved or not, Compaq took heat from
users and reviewers over the lack of a user-replaceable battery in previous
versions of the iPAQ. The good news is that all the devices in the h5400 series
will come with a user-replaceable lithium-polymer rechargeable battery. In
addition, HP plans to offer a high-capacity 2,500 mAh replaceable battery as an
option. All 5400 series iPAQ will have a user-replaceable battery. The h5450
also comes with what HP calls a backup battery. It is built into the device and
not accessible by the user. However, the backup battery has only enough juice to
power the Pocket PC for a few minutes while you change main batteries. Don't
expect it to keep your RAM data alive if the main battery runs out. Built-in
wireless capability The h5450 is not the first iPAQ to come with built-in
Bluetooth capability. However, the software used to control this integrated
radio has taken on a huge leap forward on the h5450. The Bluetooth Manager
utility has been enhanced to support the following functions and tasks:
Exchanging contacts, calendar items, and tasks with other Bluetooth-equipped
Pocket PCs Exchanging electronic business cards Transferring files Accessing
dial-up networks Synchronizing data with a Bluetooth-equipped computer
Partnering with a cell phone Connecting to serial ports Connecting to a
Bluetooth LAN Interfacing with a Bluetooth headset Printing to a Bluetooth
printer Creating a personal area network to chat, play games, etc. The functions
that Bluetooth supports are called "Services." I was pretty excited to see some
of these new services and the newly added Bluetooth Connection Wizard. I thought
I would try the service for a Bluetooth headset. I have the new Jabra BT200
headset which I love to use with my Sony/Ericsson T68i mobile phone. The
Connection Wizard worked like a charm, taking me, step-by-step, through the
process of setting up the Bluetooth connection to the headset. The Wizard is an
immense improvement over the setup process required on the Bluetooth-enabled
h3970/3870 iPAQ Pocket PCs. Another bonus touch in the Bluetooth software is a
feature called "Profiles." You can set up profiles for the different Bluetooth
devices you wish to connect to, and use the Bluetooth Browser screen in the
Connection Wizard to switch among them quickly and easily. The HP iPAQ H5450's
enhanced Bluetooth Manager utility makes it easy to exchange Pocket Outlook
data, transfer files, partner with a cell phone, browse files on a remote
device, and more. You can set up profiles for the different Bluetooth devices
you wish to connect to, and use the Bluetooth Browser to switch between them
quickly and easily. The h5450 also comes with built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b Wireless
LAN), which should prove to be a popular feature for mobile enterprise users.
The software setup for the 802.11 radio is done using the h5450's Wireless
Profile function, similar to the Bluetooth Profiles feature described above. The
Profile Wizard walks you through the set up process. Having profiles in both
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi makes it easy to switch between wireless networks and
connections when you're traveling. Added security with a built-in biometric
fingerprint reader The biometric fingerprint reader is the most unique feature
of the h5450. When activated and programmed with the owner's fingerprint, only
the owner of the device can access data on the Pocket PC. The fingerprint reader
is located immediately below the navigation pad at the bottom of the face of the
iPAQ. To accommodate it, HP reduced the navigation pad from the inch-wide
ellipse found on the h3800 and 3900 series to a 1/2-inch diameter button. The
smaller button works fine but it may make some gamers a little unhappy since the
size is significantly smaller than before. A brief training period is required,
in which you "teach" the software to recognize your fingerprint. I attended a
security breakout session at the MS Fusion show earlier this year where we were
asked if we secured our PDAs with a password. A very small minority of us did.
The we were also asked if we kept confidential or personal information on our
PDAs and the majority of us did. The lesson: 128-bit encryption isn't enough.
The security features have to be easy to use. I believe the fingerprint reader
will make the h5450 a huge winner with enterprise users. It's very accurate and
easy to use. A brief training period is required, in which you "teach" the
software to recognize your fingerprint. You must also activate it, as you would
with regular password protection. Then, every time you turn on your iPAQ, you
are prompted to swipe your finger slowly across the reader. The system
recognizes your fingerprint and then opens the iPAQ to the screen you were last
working on before either you turned it off or it timed out and went into secure
mode. If it doesn't recognize your fingerprint, a "No Match!" is declared and
the system stays locked down. It's not only functional but it's, well, a lot of
FUN to use. In addition to fingerprint capability, the h5450 also has the simple
and "strong alphanumeric" password protection found on previous versions of the
iPAQ. You can configure the fingerprint security to be used with or without
these features. For example, I setup my h5450 to be "PIN or fingerprint" and to
be enabled automatically if the device had been unused for 15 minutes. The
fingerprint reader software performed without a hitch. I was able to set up the
program and go through its training exercises with ease. I recorded several of
my fingerprints for testing and the security worked flawlessly. Microphone,
speaker, and vibrating alarm The built-in speaker is still located under the
dark plastic hat on the top of the iPAQ. The quality and volume of the sound,
which are iPAQ hallmarks, are not significantly affected. However, the iPAQ
Audio settings utility has changed. You can only modify the bass settings and
not the treble, which probably reflects the change in the speaker. There is a
new option in the Audio settings utility that lets you enable the Power Saving
Mode, which turns the built-in audio amplifier off when not in use. The location
of the built-in microphone on the new iPAQ is different from previous models. It
is now located on the bottom of the face, to the left side of the fingerprint
reader. There are actually two microphone openings, one on the front and one on
the bottom. Another new feature in the h5450 is a speaker volume control. The
voice record button on the upper left edge of the device is now a rocker button.
Press on the plus sign to increase volume and on the minus to decrease and
eventually mute it. Press and hold down in the middle of the button to activate
the voice record feature. The voice record button now lets you increase or
decrease the speaker volume. The headset jack has been relocated to the bottom
left corner of the device because the Wi-Fi antenna is where the jack used to
be. Unfortunately, this new location makes the h5450 incompatible with many
existing cases. The jack has been redesigned to provide not only stereo output,
but audio input via a microphone. With the introduction of VoiceOver IP and
recording applications for the Pocket PC, as well as a number of voice
recognition applications, the ability to use a higher-quality external
microphone will come in handy. The final new hardware feature I'd like to
mention is the built-in vibrating alarm! It's a great way to remind you of an
appointment without bothering everyone else, but I am not sure what impact this
feature has on battery life. The vibrator on the pre-production version of the
h5450 worked well. I had no problem feeling an alarm when the device was in my
pants pocket. However I found it more difficult to sense when the Pocket PC was
hanging off my belt in a PDAMotion Leather Slider II case. Variety of built-in
and user-installable software Add-on software has always been one of HP's strong
suites. Of course, the h5450 comes with the Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 operating
system and applications built in and ready to go. The applications include
Pocket Outlook, Pocket Office, and a number of other built-in and
user-installable applications from Microsoft. A complete description of these
applications is on Pocket PC magazine's Web site (
www.PocketPCmag.com/bg2003/MS_software.asp ). Also built into the h5450 are a
number of HP utilities, including: IPAQ File Store —Lets you access a portion of
flash ROM to store data and install programs IPAQ Task Manager —Lets you open
and close programs quickly IPAQ Backup —Lets you back up data to, and restore it
from, a storage card IPAQ Image Viewer —Lets you view graphics files on the iPAQ
IPAQ Audio —Allows for Bass Boost and Power Saving mode. Nevo Universal Remote
Control — Lets you control TVs, VCRs, DVD players, and other audio/visual (A/V)
devices from the H5450 Variety of additional utilities —Let you adjust standby
settings and power conservation modes, run self tests, and more. Expansion Pack
and power status utilities also included. Included on CD with the h5450 are a
wide variety of user-installable applications, as well as links to other
programs. Some of these are full working versions and others are trial demos. A
list of these programs is available in the Spec Sheet at the end of this
article. Recommended accessories HP will offer a variety of accessories for the
h5400 series iPAQs. And the 5400s can use existing Expansion Packs and other
accessories. A list of the optional accessories is in the Spec Sheet at the end
of this article. However, due to some design changes, including the Wi-Fi
antenna and the new placement of hardware buttons and the microphone/headphone
jack, cases and some other accessories will have to be redesigned. I don't like
the vinyl cases that come with most Pocket PCs, preferring instead a
"play-through" leather case that I can clip onto my belt. The very popular
EBCases ( www.ebcases.com ) and Vaja cases ( www.vajacases.com ) that work fine
on the h3800/H3900 series will not work well on a h5450. The screen and buttons
are no longer centered, and you can't use the all-important fingerprint reader.
These two companies will probably introduce versions of their popular cases for
the h5450. Until they do, I found that the PDAmotion Leather Slider II (
www.pdamotion.com ) CF Expansion and Leather Flip Cover works perfectly as is!
Protecting the Pocket PC display from wear and tear is important, and I highly
recommend using thin plastic "screen protectors." Several companies market
these, but I recommend WriteSHIELDs, available from www.pocketPCtechs.com .
These screen protectors are easy to install, have an anti-glare coating that
reduces reflection, and last for several months. A powerful, versatile Pocket PC
for enterprise and small business users Of course, nothing is perfect in this
world and the HP iPAQ h5450 is no exception. Although the h5450 does have a
commercial-grade infrared port with greater range, it still transmits data at
115.2 Kbps. The Razor Zayo A600 reviewed on page 19 incorporates the faster 4 MB
per second IR port. HP probably should have put a faster IR port in the h5450.
Also, I feel compelled to mention again the misnamed "backup battery" built into
the device. I think it may cause some heartache, especially to users familiar
with other Pocket PCs, where "backup battery" means an emergency power source
that can keep RAM data alive for days if the main battery fails. Enough said
about that. In spite of these minor suggestions, I think HP pulled out the stops
with this one. The iPAQ h5450 is a great solution for enterprise and small
business users alike. The combination of 802.11 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless, an
SDIO slot, its ability to accept some of the existing Expansion Packs, and its
absolutely stunning transflective 65K color screen will help to make the h5450 a
winner in the high-end Pocket PC arena. And the addition of the integrated
biometric fingerprint reader for added security just raised the bar for
developers of enterprise Pocket PCs. This is the first of the new h5400 series
iPAQ Pocket PCs, and the product line will only get better as future models
incorporate WAN voice and data features. For both the security-minded business
user and the savvy individual looking for the top of line in an integrated
wireless package, the new HP iPAQ h5450 Pocket PC fits the bill. HP Introduces
$300 iPAQ h1910 Pocket PC In addition to its top-of-the-line h5450, HP has
introduced an attractive $300 economy model, the HP iPAQ h1910 Pocket PC. The
h1910 weighs a mere 4.2 ounces and measures 4.5 x 2.8 x 0.5 inches, making it
the smallest and lightest Pocket PC around. It has the same brilliant new 65K
color display found on the h5400 series, and also incorporates a
user-replaceable battery. The h1910 sports the slower 200MHz version of the
PXA250 XScale processor from Intel. The device has 64MB of RAM, 46MB of which
can be accessed by users for file storage and program installation. HP kept
costs down by including only 16MB of flash ROM to store the OS and built-in
applications. Microsoft Reader and Windows Media Player, usually found in flash
ROM in other Pocket PCs, must be installed in RAM on the h1910. The h1910 has
one expansion slot that can accept optional Secure Digital storage cards. The
current maximum capacity of these cards is 512MB. The h1910 has the standard
four application launch buttons, voice record and navigation buttons, and power
and event notification LEDs. The Pocket PC also comes with an IrDA port,
connectivity port for the data cradle or cable, and a stereo audio out jack. The
rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery has a 900 mAh capacity. According to
manufacturer, a fully charged battery will give you four hours of continuous
use. Spare batteries cost $50. The h1910 will be available from authorized HP
dealers and from HP's online store ( www.hpshopping.com ) Look for a more

Infineon-Rosner Produces Bluetooth Enabled Multimedia Jacket Posted by Adam Z
Lein Tuesday, July 27th at 02:00 PM Uh-oh! Looks like Scott eVest is going to
have some competition. Here's a Bluetooth enabled jacket with MP3 playing
capabilities and controls on the sleeve. It has integrated headphones and
microphone which will also function as a Bluetooth headset for a Bluetooth
enabled phone. "The German clothing manufacturer rosner from the Bavarian city
of Ingolstadt and Infineon Technologies AG today presented a jointly developed
product: A men’s jacket called “mp3blue” that features built-in functions such
as “mobile telephony via Bluetooth” and “MP3 player”. The electronics are an
integral part of the clothing. The electronic features are controlled by a
textile keyboard incorporated on the sleeve. This new product for
technologically progressive, fashion-conscious men can be ordered via the
Internet beginning in early August." I wonder how expensive this will be! Read

4150 Series Case Round-Up Reply with quote Okay so the h4100 series from HP is
small and beautiful, but the size gives it an almost fragile appearance which
belies the actual solid construction. To that effect, you will want to find
somewhere safe to store your pocket friend during the course of the day. I
decided to pull together no less than 12 popular case options and give an
overview of the merits of each product to give you an idea of which will suit
your needs best. Packaging, though nice, doesn’t contribute to the actual use of
a product so I will focus on the case only. And so without further ado, onto our
star cast.... Sena Cases Leather Case The leather case from Sena is a very
impressive product. The quality of leather is good and the fit and finish of
this case are almost perfect. All holes match up exactly with their related
components and provide you with easy access to almost all areas of the device
including holes for headphone socket and microphone. I say almost because
annoyingly, Sena have not included access to the soft reset button which
featured on the h1900 case. Also slightly different is the fit around the
screen; while perfect in dimensions, it appears to be a little stretched and
pulls away from the sides of the screen, a shame when the h1900 was perfect in
this respect. Internally there is one large credit sized pocket and two smaller
slots to hold SD cards. Protection on offer is very good, although the bottom
corners are exposed; most likely to ensure a snug fit around the curved section
of the device, however this also allows access to the Infrared port. The tight
fit of this case and magnetic closure keep this as possibly the smallest leather
flip case for the h4150 series and also lend to the ability to sync in the
cradle. The attractively finished leather flip just adds to the overall
impression of this case and I highly recommend it, even with the slight flaws.
There is a choice of colours and whether you'd like it with or without a belt
clip. Figure 1: The Sena sports an attractive two tone finish. Figure 2: Those
stretched sides mar an otherwise excellent fit all-round. This case can be
bought from the Sena Cases Web site for $39.99. Covertec Leather Case Finding
the right words to describe this case may prove a little tricky. While the main
reason for a case is to protect your device, Covertec has taken a minimalist
approach meaning a lot of your device is exposed with nearly the whole of the
front of the unit displayed with the flip open. You don’t fully appreciate the
design of this style until you hold the device in your hand and realise that the
small h4150 series is a beautiful looking Pocket PC and Covertec is allowing you
to show it off. With the flip closed, the protection on offer is not as high as
some, due to the sides of the PDA showing through but this does allow good
access to all areas. The flip cover, which houses two credit card and two SD
pockets, closes magnetically on the back. A well-implemented belt clip
connection keeps a slim profile when not in use and the handy kit even includes
a spare screw and mini screwdriver for attaching this connection. Kudos to
Covertec for making things easier for the user. If you don’t mind the exposed
sides, this case offers a good quality all round package. A limited choice of
colours is on offer for this case. Figure 3: The Covertec case offers a change
from the norm. Figure 4: Easy access is offered to the device. This case can be
bought from the Covertec Web site for £31.27 / $39.95. EB Cases Leather Case The
EB case is plain but elegant in its styling and soft leather finish. The flip is
magnetically closed which helps to keep the size of this case down, however, the
fit is not quite as good as the Vaja or Sena. Holes match up quite well but not
perfectly and there is no access to the soft reset button or the microphone.
Inside the flip are three large credit card sized pockets. Overall protection is
very good with very little of the device exposed when closed. Although not quite
as snug a fit as some, this case is well worthy of your attention. Only
available in black, you have the choice of with or without a belt clip. Figure
5: A simple design keeps things clean and stylish. Figure 6: The magnetic flip
provides effortless access. This case can be bought from the EB Cases Web site
for $36.95. Covertec Aluminium Case For the ultimate in protection, there really
is only one stop - the metal case made by Covertec, among others; the same case
can be found under the Proporta, Innopocket, Piel Frama and Rhinoskin brands.
Made from precision moulded aluminium, this is one case that will offer the same
perfect fit forever provided you don’t subject it to dent inducing heavy knocks.
With the swing door closed, I’m confident this case will keep your device safe
from all but the severest of treatment. You have easy access to all parts of the
device and accessing the recessed record button is easier than the 1900 series.
The inclusion of a soft reset hole is a plus point as well over previous models.
The biggest issue I have seen with this case are the complaints of the metal
door opening to the right due to the record button access on the left. Many
people find this a hindrance when actually using the device in hand. In my
experience you quickly adjust to working with this case and it helps to keep the
size of the case down as opposed to the alternative option of a doubled-hinged
door that opens at the top of the device. This case looks attractive with its
silvery finish although small ridges are required to aid grip – something of a
necessity due to the smooth, hard surface. The small SD card holder on the
inside of the door adds to the value. The protection to price ratio is second to
none in this company. Figure 7: The Aluminium case looks every bit the fortress
for your Pocket PC. Figure 8: Neoprene lining offers internal protection. This
case can be bought from the Covertec Web site for £27.97 / $34.95. Vaja Leather
Case Vaja Cases are highly regarded in the community and this case just
exemplifies why with a high quality fit and finish in excellent leather. This
case is one of the smallest leather flips beaten only by the Sena in terms of
size. All holes match up perfectly and only the microphone is hidden away
without access. The flip has one credit sized pocket and two of the SD variety.
Overall protection is very good, although like the Sena, the bottom corners are
exposed. If you are a Vaja fan you will love this case and I would recommend it
to anyone. The clip closure, however, does mean this case is larger than it
could be and a magnetic closure option would be desirable. A vast choice of
colour and styling combinations are on offer as well as the usual with or
without belt clip. Figure 9: That Vaja badge is a sign of a quality case. Figure
10: The fit is exactly what you would hope for. This case can be bought from the
Vaja Web site starting at $54.90. Piel Frama Leather Case If anyone out there
has owned a leather case from Piel Frama before, you will know just how
luxurious these cases feel. Sumptuous is not a word I would often associate with
a PDA case but it’s the perfect term to describe the quality of leather used.
Workmanship, as to be expected, is top notch with everything stitched together
perfectly to provide an excellent fit. The protection on offer is very good too
with the soft padded leather sure to cushion the majority of knocks. The
downside to this, however, is a case that is slightly larger than some of the
others on display here. Access is good with a stud flip that closes on the rear,
however, the lack of a soft reset hole upsets things a little. Piel Frama does,
however, employ a clever belt clip system that can be completely removed when
not in use and doesn’t provide any form of obstacle. Three large pockets and two
smaller SD slots provide the storage options on the inside of the flip. The
understated looks can’t hide the fact that this is a luxury case and if this is
something you look for in your case, Piel Frama is most definitely worth a look.
The Piel Frama case comes in a choice of colour and hide combinations. Figure
11: With no logo on show you can still tell it is made by Piel Frama. Figure 12:
Fine handmade craftmanship all-round. This case can be bought from the Piel
Frama Web site for 60 Euros. Proporta Alu-Leather Case Proporta’s leather flip
case takes a similar stylistic approach as the Covertec case with the majority
of Pocket PC being put on display when the case is open. Made from soft leather,
the finish of this case is very good and, thanks to the firm but protected clips
for holding the device in place, you have easy access to all components. This
case also offers good storage options with two SD slots in addition to the
removable cushioned insert that offers extra protection to your device combined
with a see-through pocket at the expense of some added thickness. This insert is
now held in place by Velcro making it more secure. The biggest change to this
case however is hinted at by its name; the leather flip now incorporates an
Aluminium insert allowing it to be slightly thinner yet offer increased screen
protection. A stylish touch is how this brushed Aluminium is visible through a
small window on the inside. If you love the styling of your h4150, this is a
good alternative to the Covertec although the side protection on offer here is
not quite as high. This case can also be used in the cradle with a bit of
adjustment. Figure 13: The Proporta is outwardly similar to the Covertec. Figure
14: Definitely the case if you like to show off your Pocket PC. This case can be
bought from the Proporta Web site for £23.44 / $34.95. JAVOedge Clear Case For
those looking for something a bit different, the clear case from JAVOedge may be
just the thing. Taking a similar approach to the Aluminium cases, the clear case
features a rigid, moulded design fashioned this time from clear plastic. This
offers a fairly solid, close fitting environment while allowing you to show off
your prized possession in relative safety. With the cover closed, you have
access to all areas although the record button and down on the D pad proved a
little awkward to use in normal operation with the cover closed. This does,
however, allow you to do the basic PDA functions without opening the cover.
Cradling is not an option with this case but using a cable to sync works just
fine. Opening up the cover makes this case very easy to use while the device is
still held securely inside. The double hinge at the top allows the cover to flip
all the way back to be flush with the rear of the unit however this hinge may
prove to be the weak spot of this design. While the plastic appears reasonably
durable – I fear dropping the unit onto this hinge will cause irreparable damage
to the case. Still I would prefer that the case took the damage over my iPAQ
anyday and would recommend this case to careful owners who fancy something
different from the norm. Figure 15: The Clear Case is just that. Figure 16: The
double hinge allows you to put the cover well out of the way. This case can be
bought from the JAVOEdge Web site for $23.95. Cases Online Slim Case While Cases
Online offer a great range of differing sizes and styles, not to mention
colours, the look and feel are that of an executive product. The Slim case that
we’re looking at here is no different – it has the appearance of a file-o-fax
while still remaining relatively small in size and offers something different
from the usual collection of leather cases. Opening to the left in true book
fashion, the front cover is secured in place by a leather strap that fits snugly
in a small leather loop on the front. This form of closure is not as quick as a
snap or magnetic alternative but is in fitting with the overall theme. The PDA
itself is held in place by a leather covered moulding and is elastically
attached to the case. This not only ensures the unit remains safely in place but
offers great protection whether the cover is open or closed. You have easy
access to all areas of the device apart from the soft reset hole and while the
use of a cradle is not an option, a sync cable will see you just fine. Storage
is good with the cover housing a large slot and three smaller credit card sized
sections. This is complimented by two elastic SD card pouches and a stylus / pen
holder. While typically larger than your normal leather offering, this case
proved easy to use and very practical in day to day use. The combination of
moulded interior and padded, oversized leather offer excellent protection and
overall the Slim case has really endeared itself to me. Figure 17: A throw back
to the days of the File-O-Fax? Figure 18: Things are very practical inside. This
case can be bought from the Cases Online Web site for $64.75. Bellagio Designs
Leather Case With a name like Bellagio, I was expecting the last word in luxury
and style. It was a little surprising then when first impressions made me think
this case was a little cheap. Thankfully that didn’t last long as a good once
over showed this case to be well constructed with a very functional design. You
have access to all areas of the device although there is no cut out in the cover
for the microphone. The flip is magnetically secured on the rear by a small
strap and the inside has slots for two SD cards and credit card. What sets this
case apart from the rest is the unique rear splitting section that opens up when
the cover is undone to allow the case to sit securely in a cradle. This is a
good solution to allow cradling while avoiding any lack of protection in the
case. The finish is good although there is a relaxed fit around the device
meaning it is not hugged as tightly as some of the competition but nothing to
warrant concern. The cover does seem a little over padded which adds a little
unnecessary bulk although I’m sure many people will find this gives it a more
luxurious appearance. A good solid belt clip implementation is the only option
when ordering. Figure 19: Classic styling with the Bellagio. Figure 20: A tidy
overall fit. This case can be bought from the Bellagio Designs Web site for
$39.99. Krusell Handit Multidapt Leather Case The Handit Multidapt leather case
from Krusell sure is a mouthful and I’m glad online ordering will prevent
Krusell from losing sales through the lack of telephone orders – it’s just too
much effort to say that surely! The Multidapt part comes from the standard belt
clip system employed and is actually quite well implemented. Rather than having
a stick out metal stud to catch on things, this case uses a flush plastic
locking system that is very unobtrusive when not being used and certainly seems
quite a robust alternative. Another seemingly unique feature with this case is
the double stud fastening on the rear that allows two levels of tightness when
securing the flip cover. This is a clever idea that will allow people who like
to stuff those credit and memory card slots as full as they like without
stretching the leather or fastening. Overall, the construction and fitting is
very good but the leather seems to lack something with its cold, smooth finish.
You have good access all round although the lack of a microphone hole may be a
small issue for some. The headphone access makes up for it with the ability to
open and close the flip without the need to remove the headphones. Three credit
card slots accompany the two SD card slots on the inside of the cover and this
rounds off what is a very practical solution! Figure 21: A black leather case
for a change. Figure 22: The Krusell follows a safe and functional design. This
case can be bought from various resellers including Data-Nation for $25.95.
iProducts iHolster4100 While this article is concentrating on cases, I thought
this holster from iProducts warranted a mention due to the fundamental aspects
of carrying and protecting your device. Moulded out of a very robust plastic,
this holster fits the iPAQ superbly well with the cushioned inserts allowing the
device to be retrieved quickly while ensuring protection to the surface of the
unit. When tucked inside, the rear and top of your Pocket PC are exposed
although the screen remains safely out of harm's way. A good quality secure belt
clip with quick release mechanism is included which adds to the practicality of
this solution. The price may seem a little high for what is a relatively basic
product although I would recommend this for people looking for a simple holster
design for the PDA. Figure 23: Thankfully there is little to damage on the rear
of the iPAQ. Figure 24: Nothing should get through that to the screen beneath.
This case can be bought from the iProducts Web site for $31.00. Conclusion So
what case works for you? This is a very personal thing to most users and I don't
believe there is one universally top case that every owner of a Pocket PC will
use. Many factors come into the buying decision, such as type of device,
material of the case and how you carry / use it. My own needs are for something
that doesn't add much bulk to the small h4150, can easily fit into a pocket and
will allow me to quickly flip open several times during a working day. To this
affect the leather flip from Sena cases has earned its place as my main case
with its small form, good looks and importantly for me, quick access with the
magnetic flip. I also back this up with the excellent protective Aluminium case
for when I need to pack my device away in a weekend bag. It’s fair to say
however that there are no cases in this round up with a major mark against them
and the majority will find themselves as the top choice for differing reasons.
You may even opt to use more than one depending on your situation. The great
news is there is such an extensive choice for the Pocket PC owner which is a
good thing when you consider how fickle a bunch of consumers we can be! Back to

anything thinner? Reply with quote I have the sena case, but still find it way
too thick for my jean pocket. So I cut off the cover and superglued the edges so
it doesn't fall apart. But the thickness still bugs... (my jeans too tight?)
Anyways, I'm only want to protect my unit from scratches. Anyone know if there's

have been using a RhinoSkin Leather case I got for my 1945...although the
cutouts don't line up perfectly, the case works fantastically. I used a leather
punch to create a reset button hole in the side. It looks as if the manufacturer
had done it! Anyone else use this case? If so, could you explain to me why
RhinoSkin felt that it was necessary to include a cutout for the battery cover
release button?!?!?! Think about it...you can't remove the cover while the case
is on anyway! Am I missing something? Back to top View user's profile Send
