1/1/2005 Samsung Nexio XP30 Review: Rhinoskin Hard Case for Dell Axim Back to
all headlines submitted by ellisbaumel Friday, June 13, 2003 email article view
recent articles by ellisbaumel Protect your investment – keep it covered. I’ve
had my Dell Axim for about six months now, and I take it with me wherever I go.
I often keep the Axim in my shirt pocket, and I have to admit that more than
once, it has slipped out and hit the deck. It would be safer in a case, but the
vinyl standard issue Dell case is chunky and ugly, so I rarely use it. I
recently tried out the Rhinoskin Aluminum hard case that is specially made to
fit the Axim. Dell Axim Hard Case Image 1 - Rhinoskin Hard Case for Dell Axim
The Rhinoskin is a thing of beauty. The unit is a form fitting piece of brushed
aluminum with a clam shell panel to cover the screen (image 1). The interior is
lined with a neoprene material that protects the PDA from shocks, and helps to
keep it in place. The inside also has two spring clips to keep the device from
slipping out. The case has cutouts to accommodate the CF and SD card slots, the
jog dial/voice recorder/soft reset buttons, the recharger/synch connections, and
the front-mounted speaker. Thus, with the unit in place, you have access to all
necessary controls and connections. (image 2, 3). The case also has raised nubs
on the sides to give you a better grip. The front panel of the case is hinged on
the right side, and snaps in place with a raised nylon bar on the left.
Rhinoskin makes aluminum cases for other PDAs with a cover that slides up and
down; the clamshell design is the only one available for the Axim. Dell Axim
Hard Case Image 2 - Rhinoskin Hard Case for Dell Axim Dell Axim Hard Case Image
3 - Rhinoskin Hard Case for Dell Axim In reviewing this case, I realized that
the choice of case design is a matter of personal preference. With each design
there are benefits and trade-offs. Within the category of form-fitting aluminum
hard cases, I would have to say that the Rhinoskin is extremely well executed.
Therefore, some of the cons listed below relate to the overall type of case, and
not specifically to the Rhinoskin model. Pros • This unit is strong. It
completely encases the plastic body of the PDA, and with the built in padding,
should protect it from damage due to minor drops and bangs. As far as I’m
concerned, this is the primary function of a case, and the Rhinoskin does it
well. • As mentioned before, the Rhinoskin is very attractive to look at. The
case fits the lines of the Axim perfectly, and adds some stylistic elements of
its own. The case even reproduces the contours of the Axim’s battery on the
back. (image 4) Dell Axim Hard Case Image 4 - Rhinoskin Hard Case for Dell Axim
• The slots are well placed. It was easy to gain access to all of the necessary
controls with the case in place. The only cutout that could be improved is the
one for the stylus. I found it difficult to pull out the stylus with the front
panel in the open position. • The quality of construction is high. The case has
a substantial feel, and the fit and finish are superb. The Axim slides in and
out without a hitch. The cover aligns perfectly, and closes securely with
minimal pressure. Cons • This case adds a considerable amount of weight to the
PDA package. The Axim is no lightweight to start with, and when mounted in the
Rhinoskin case, starts to reach the mass of a small brick. With the extra weight
on this Pocket PC, my pockets can’t stand the strain. • The unit also adds a lot
of bulk to the Axim. Even if you are willing to tolerate the weight, you can’t
fit the combined unit into your shirt pocket. It’s not hard to slide the PDA in
and out, and keep it naked in your pocket, but that defeats the purpose of a
form-fitting case. You really want to keep the PDA protected as much as
possible. • Likewise, with the case on, you can’t use the Dell
synchronization/charging cradle. It’s easy enough to remove the PDA from the
case, but I prefer to keep the case on as much as possible. • There is no belt
clip built in or available as an accessory. I see this as a serious drawback,
especially since the case does not fit easily into most pockets. You want to
have the PDA close at hand, but carrying it loose or keeping it in a briefcase
is not the answer. • There are no pockets for extra memory cards. I think that
Rhinoskin could have fit some slots on the inside of the front cover. The cover
curves out over the screen, and I think they could have put some storage there.
I like to carry an extra SD card with MP3 files and photos, and it would be nice
to have them right in the case. • The clamshell cover hangs in a precarious
position when opened. It swings open like a book cover, and hangs off the hinge
to the right. I am afraid that one day I will bang against something and break
the cover off the hinge (image 5). I think the designs where the cover swings up
and under the PDA are a bit less prone to breakage. Dell Axim Hard Case Image 5
- Rhinoskin Hard Case for Dell Axim Conclusion As I said before, most of the
cons to this product are a function of its basic design, and not unique to
Rhinoskin. Within the overall class of hard aluminum cases, the Rhinoskin is a
high quality, attractive option. Maybe the real answer is that we need to carry
different cases at different times for different purposes. However, if you are
looking for a solid cocoon to put your Axim into, and you don’t mind the lack of
a belt clip and storage pockets, you should give the Rhinoskin serious
consideration. Visit http://www.saunders-usa.com/rhinoskin/ to purchase any
Rhinoskin case. Click Here email story see recent articles by ellisbaumel

1/1/2005 Samsung Nexio XP30 REVIEW: Covertec Dell Axim X5 Leather Case Back to
all headlines submitted by AdamaDBrown Tuesday, April 22, 2003 email article
view recent articles by AdamaDBrown For high-class style, it's hard to beat a
leather case. Covertec has been makingcases since before the birth of the
original Palm Pilot, and given their quality it's not surprising that they're
still around. The Covertec Axim case, like their other leather cases, comes in
your choice ofblack, red or brown leather, each with light brown stiching along
the edges. I recieved the black version. Don't be fooled by it's looks in the
photos--it really is black, although it can take on a slight bluish cast in the
right light. The front of the case is mostly plain, other than the discreet
Covertec logo embossed in the bottom right-hand corner. The overall feel of the
leather is quite soft and supple, with a layer of padding between the leather
surface and what feels like a cardboard stiffener. The inside of the case is
lined by what feels like a thin vinyl, unpadded and textured to resemble
leather, and stamped at the top with the name 'Covertec'. front view of Covertec
case Inside the flip-top lid are five pockets, three of them credit-card size,
and two smaller ones. Unfortunately, the pockets are a bit too deep to hold
memory cards unless you are willing to use tweezers to get your card
back.Alternatively, however, the large upper pockets are perfect for a
credit-card sized SD holder, or a PC Card to CompactFlash adapter, so if you
wish you can carry your memory cards inside one of these enclosures with little
to no trouble. I put a normal size PC Card in one pocket to simulate the use of
a PC-to-CFadapter, and I quite comfortably carried around my Axim in the case
with no crowding. CF pheripherals, on the other hand, would not fit either in
the large pockets unless they have a straight-out profile, with no widening or
thickening. Similarly, the case design doesn't permit keeping anything but
memory cards in the Axim itself. above open view of covertec case At first
glance, the fastener on the back of the case looks like a standard snap closure
of the kind usually found on leather products, the ones that usually require
quite a bit of force to get closed. On closer inspection though, it's not. What
is it then? It's actually a magnetic closure with a very nifty auto-snap.When
you let the tab flip down, it automatically grabs on to the base. Move the tab
around a little bit, and it's knob will settle into the socket with a very
satisfying 'click', holding the cover tightly closed. When you go to open the
case, the closure provides just the right amount of resistance--not so much that
it's hard to open, but enough that the latch doesn't feel weak. A real five-star
closure design. back view of Dell Axim covertec case The left side is a simple
band of leather attaching the back of the case to the rigid frame portion which
holds in the Axim. Nothing particularly remarkableabout it save that it rides a
little high, and obstructs some of the lower buttons. The reset button is totally
covered, and the record button is partially covered, the extent depending on how
tightly you seat the Axim into the bottom of thecase. It varies from about 1/5th
to 2/3rds covered. It's not impossible to trigger it while in the case, but it
is made more difficult. The right side is identical to theleft, except for the
lack of buttons on the Axim. left side view of Dell Axim Covertec case The
bottom of the case has cut outs for the sync connector and DC port. While it's
possible to charge with the AC adapter while in the case, if you don't havethe
Axim perfectly aligned the adapter can catch on the leather surrounding the
cutout, preventing the plug from inserting correctly. If you want to charge
whilein the case, a USB sync/charge cable would be much less troublesome, though
you would have to open the snap to use it. Obviously, with the Axim in the case
you will not be able to sync via the cradle. bottom view of Dell Axim Covertec
top view of Dell Axim Covertec case For $40, the Covertec leather case isn't a
typical end-user accessory, nor is it something that would likely be used by the
average gear-bagger carrying theircables, spare batteries, and WiFi cards. But
if you want a stylish case, and don't need to carry lots of accessories, it's a
very attractive option for simpleprotection and good looks. Pros: High quality
Snazzy magnetic auto-snap Cons: Obstructs record and reset buttons Difficult to
use AC adapter while in case Bottom line: The Covertec leather case for the Axim
is a very slick and well built case forbasic users who only need to carry around
the Axim and a couple of memorycards, or who can put their accessories
elsewhere. Click Here email story see recent articles by AdamaDBrown

Axim X30, X3 & X3i: Rhinoskin Aluminum, Krusell Leather, DSI Aluminum, Piel
Frama Leather, Sena Leather, Bellagio Design & PDair Leather Book Type -Posted
April 2004 by Andrew Goldstein (xdalaw) I love PDA accessories. And, among my
favorite accessories, are PDA cases. If you've found this article, you know all
about the incredible variety and choices offered from a number of different case
manufacturers. In this article I will review four cases designed for the Dell
Axim X3/X3i series Pocket PC. All of the cases reviewed in this article will
work with either the X3 or the X3i. Some manufacturers make a separate model for
the X3 (which won't accommodate the antenna of the X3i). You should consider
that when choosing your case. I have referred to both models as the X3i for the
purposes of this article. Like ice cream, no one case "flavor" is best for
everybody. Since we all have unique tastes, styles and needs, this review is
only one person's opinion. This roundup will include brief descriptions of
notable features of each case, along with a numeric rating of each case on five
different factors: 1) Quality; 2) Value; 3) Functionality; 4) Style; and 5)
Overall Rating. The rating is on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being ideal. Before
I begin, I must tell you something about myself, so that you can better
understand my rating criteria. I am a lawyer who happens to be a PDA addict and
I always have my PDA with me. I have owned eight PDAs over the past decade and
I've also owned tons of cases and accessories. I also tend to be a little more
“traditional” in choosing my PDA case. I don't like bulky and gaudy cases.
Unlike some, while I don't use a belt-clip, I do appreciate that option. In sum,
I look for a case that complements my PDA. I want a case to fit well, look good,
and offer adequate protection for my expensive toy/tool. ---- Rhinoskin Aluminum
Hard Case The Rhinoskin aluminum hard case is a tough case designed to protect
your Axim without adding a lot of bulk. The case comes with a removable
belt-clip. The case sells for about $32.00. First impression: This is my second
Rhinoskin aluminum PDA case. (I had one for my Dell Axim X5.) I think an
aluminum case is a necessity for anyone who owns and carries an expensive PDA.
For me, it's mainly my "weekend" case. I throw it in my pocket, on my car seat,
or in a travel bag. I need a case that will keep my PDA safe, when it inevitably
gets knocked-around. Unlike the X5 case, you can immediately recognize that this
is a Rhinoskin. The raised letter label on the front of the case, the "bubble"
over the navigator and other buttons, and the linear ridges on the sides, breaks
the monotony of an otherwise rectangular box. Design comments and features: The
surface of the aluminum seems to have a rougher texture than my older and
smoother X5 case, making it a little easier to grip. Inside is a neoprene liner
to cushion the Axim from shocks and bumps. The Axim is held securely in the case
with two pairs of overhanging edges, while the entire face of the PPC is exposed
for easy access. The front cover swings open from left to right, as though you
were opening a book cover backwards. It also latches closed firmly. The case has
cut-outs to allow access to the stylus, the jog-dial and the headphone jack, the
speaker and the reset button. There is no cut-out for the power button and for
the microphone on the front of the PDA. In addition, the Dell-supplied sync
connector fits through another cutout on the bottom of the case. The backside of
the front cover has two slots for holding SD cards. The slot recedes into the
cover, thereby protecting the Axim's screen from the cards. The case does
accommodate the antenna of the X3i. But, the top of the antenna is partially
exposed. It sticks out about an 1/8 or ¼ of an inch above the top of the case.
As a result, an upside down drop might spell doom for your antenna. That's not
good! This is a problem because the Rhinoskin is my "protective" case. I would
have preferred the case to include a little “bump” to completely cover the X3i's
antenna. Final thoughts: I do like this case, except for the imperfect
protection for the X3i's antenna. But, even with that serious flaw, the case is
still very good. Rating Quality: 8.5. Good materials and well constructed.
Functionality: 8. Except for the partially exposed antenna problem, the case
protects on belt, or in pocket or bag. Style: 8. Simple and industrial, with a
touch of character. Value: 7. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Overall:
8.5. A very good case. Web Site:

case Rhinoskin PDA case Krusell Black Leather Case The Krusell black leather
case is intended to be an affordable, quality leather case. The case comes with
a unique, removable belt-clip. The case sells for about $24.00. First
impression: This is my second Krusell PDA case. (I had one for my Dell Axim X5.)
Upon first glance and inspection, it seems like a pretty good case. However,
while I appreciate the niche this case is meant to fill—i.e., the affordable,
quality black leather flip case--the more I use it, the more disappointed I am.
The design and fit just aren't good enough for a Krusell. When I (and other
users) recognized the problems with the case design, I emailed Krusell with my
complaints. Within a couple of days I received a very sincere response. Over the
next couple of weeks I received another. I was assured that Krusell was aware of
these problems, and that they were working to fix them. They also offered to
send me a free replacement case once it was ready. (They did not know that I as
working on a review of these cases at the time.) I was impressed! I took this as
a sign that Krusell cared about their customer's satisfaction. Unfortunately,
it's been more than two months since this communication, and I have not heard
another word from Krusell. Design comments and features: The case is well
constructed of black cattle leather, a velvety-cloth interior and a firm and
reinforced front cover. The flip cover has slots for three credit cards and two
SD cards, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with these pressing up against my
Axim's screen. The case also is designed with a corner cut-out to accommodate
the X3i's antenna. The case has cut-outs to allow access to the stylus, the
jog-dial and the headphone jack, the speaker and reset button. There is a
cut-out for the power button and for the microphone on the front of the PDA. So
far, so good. The problems? First, the bottom “pocket” of the case was not
designed well. Krusell attempted to cut-out an opening that would expose the
entire row of buttons on the bottom of the Axim. Unfortunately, the thin leather
strip on the top of the buttons simply gets in the way of accessing the buttons.
In addition, instead of creating a squared and solid slot for the Axim to slip
into, the bottom of the case is formless. And, as a result, the leather will not
lay flat when the X3i is in the case. This makes the case look ill-fitting and
imprecise. It almost looks like the case was meant for another Pocket PC, and
that it just happens to "almost" fit the X3i. Secondly, the Dell-supplied sync
connector does not easily connect through the cut-out on the bottom of the case,
without risking damage to your PPC. (Some third-party charge cables may
fit--I've used the Belkin without a problem--the fact that the Dell connector
does not is unacceptable to me.) Final thoughts: Krusell makes fine leather
cases. This just isn't yet one of them. I do have full confidence that a
redesigned Krusell case will solve these problems, and once again fill the niche
they aim towards. Rating Quality: 5. Good leather, but flawed initial design and
fit. Functionality: 7. Thin flip-case with unique multidapt belt clip system.
Style: 8. Looks more expensive than it is. Value: 8. One of the best values out
there. Overall: 6. A pretty good case at a pretty good price. Web Site:

Bellagio Designs Black Leather Case This is another leather flip case. It is
unique, however, in many ways. In fact, it's so unique that at first I wasn't
sure if I liked it or not. The Bellagio is a good quality case. The case sells
for about $40.00. The case is available with a removable belt clip. The price
puts this case in the middle to upper-end on the price scale for available X3i
cases. First impression: The first thing I noticed when I opened the box
containing the Bellagio was the smell. I love the smell of leather. The Piel
Frama smelled like leather. The Sena smelled like leather. The Bellagio smells
like leather that was just tanned. It almost smells like strong ink. This isn't
meant as a criticism, just an honest observation. The case is fine quality. The
leather is smooth and soft, and the stitching is clean and simple. When the case
is closed, and you're looking at the front, it looks a lot like a Piel
Frama--with a little more style thanks to it's metal Bellagio badge. Design
comments and features: The Bellagio case is an interesting creation. While it
has elements which are reminiscent of some other cases, the creators at Bellagio
Designs worked to create a beautiful and functional case unlike any other. I
think the result is a mixed bag. But, I give the creators a great deal of credit
for trying to push the PDA-case envelope. Bellagio decided to utilize a
snap-closure in their case. This is similar to the Piel Frama and the Krusell,
and different than the Sena. The most unique element to the Bellagio is that it
is designed to be used with the Dell sync cradle. The back of the case has a
“trap-door” that flips up so that the bottom of the X3i can be placed in the
cradle for syncing and charging. That's pretty neat! I don't know of any other
cases that do that. (Of course, the case will also allow syncing with a cable or
with a wifi network if you have that capability.) The front cover is thickly
padded and it feels reinforced, while the back cover is quite firm and strong.
This padding, along with the permanent metal “nub” for the detachable belt clip,
combines to make this one of the thicker X3i cases in the bunch. The result is
that the case will fit into the inside pocket of a suit-jacket, or inside of a
shirt pocket, but there's not much room left over for anything else. The Axim
fits nicely inside of the case. The inside lining of the case is fabric, so the
X3i slides easily (but snugly). The Bellagio's design exposes the entire screen,
and the buttons on the front of the X3i, but it also incorporates a thin leather
strip between the two areas, to help to secure the PDA inside of the case. The
concept is similar to the Sena and to the Krusell, but there is a significant
difference. Unlike the other two cases, in light of the “trap-door” feature
described above, the Bellagio case had to figure out a way to keep the case from
slipping out of the bottom of the case. The solution was to place a thin leather
strap under the bottom of the PDA. Consequently, this strap has to be thin and
narrow to allow access to the connector, when the Axim is placed in the sync
cradle. As a result, it feels too flimsy to keep the PDA from falling out the
bottom. I'm sure it won't give out, but it sure feels that way. I won't take
that chance. The flip cover also has a slot for a few business cards or for a
credit card. There are also slots for two SD cards. Bellagio added another
unusual design feature in this case. They decided to reinforce the leather
around the sides and top of the screen by stitching a thin bar into the leather.
The bar feels very solid, and is about the thickness of a ballpoint pen refill
cartridge. Bellagio may have done this to prevent the inside cover from pressing
directly against the screen. This makes sense if you have a credit or SD card in
the lid's pockets. The case has cut-outs to allow access to the stylus, the
jog-dial and headphone jack, and to the speaker. While there is no cut-out for
reset button, you can easily move the “trap-door” to gain easy access. There is
no need for a cut-out for the power button and for the microphone on the front
of the PDA, as the top edge of the case is so thin that it leaves them exposed.
The Dell-supplied sync connector fits well inside another cutout on the bottom
of the case The wifi antenna fits through the top of the flip case via a
rectangular cut-out. However, the front of the case is so thick, that I needed
to pull the cover down to snap the case closed and expose the antenna. It
certainly didn't flip closed like the Sena case. Final thoughts: If you want to
be able to leave your X3i in the case when using the sync cradle, and if you
like a quality, black leather flip case, this is the only choice for you. Just
be prepared to lug a pretty thick package. Rating Quality: 8. Fine materials and
quality manufacturing. Functionality: 8. Ability to sync in cradle is unique and
ingenious.. Style: 8.5. Good looking, classy styled case.. Value: 7. Not the
cheapest, but a top-quality leather case, at a reasonable price. Overall: 7.5. A
very unique and fine case. But, I think it's a little too thick, and the
restraining “strip” is a little too thin for my own taste. Web Site:
www.bellagiodesigns.com/showcategory3.php/39 , $40 Bellagio Dell Axim case
Bellagio Designs Axim X3i case DSI Aluminum Case (PDA Armor) The DSI aluminum
hard case is a tough case designed to protect your Axim without adding a lot of
bulk. The case does not come with a removable belt-clip. The case sells for
about $22.00. First impression: The DSI case is a cheaper (both in cost and
design) rival to the Rhinoskin case. It's not bad, but it's not quite as good,
either. Design comments and features: The aluminum on the DSI feels smoother
than the Rhinoskin. As a result, the DSI is a little harder to hold onto. The
case was not designed with any bumps or ridges, which might have helped with the
grip problem common to an aluminum case. Inside is a neoprene liner to cushion
the Axim from shocks and bumps. The Axim is held securely in the case with a
single pair of overhanging edges, while the entire face of the PPC is exposed
for easy access. The front cover swings open from left to right, as though you
were opening a book cover backwards. It also latches closed firmly. The case has
cut-outs to allow access to the stylus, the jog-dial and the headphone jack, the
speaker and the reset button. There is a cut-out for the power button and for
the microphone on the front of the PDA. In addition, the Dell-supplied sync
connector fits through another cutout on the bottom of the case. The backside of
the front cover has a single slot for holding a SD card. The slot recedes into
the cover, thereby protecting the Axim's screen from the card. Like the
Rhinoskin, the case does accommodate the antenna of the X3i. But, like the
Rhinoskin, the top of the antenna is partially exposed. In fact, even more of
the antenna is exposed with the DSI than with the Rhinoskin, since the DSI case
is a little bit shorter in length. The antenna sticks out about ¼ or 1/3 of an
inch above the top of the case. This is a problem because the aluminum hard case
is supposed to be a "protective" case. I would have preferred the case to
include a little “bump” to completely cover the X3i's antenna. Final thoughts:
If you are looking for a protective hard-case for your X3i, and if the price
difference with the Rhinoskin is a problem, this is a good case. It does the
same thing, just not quite as well. Rating Quality: 7. Slightly lesser-quality
than the Rhinoskin, but still good. Functionality: 5. No belt clip limits
usefulness for some. Style: 6. Smooth and simple equates to kind of dull. Value:
8. Less money than the Rhinoskin for similar protection. Overall: 7. A pretty
tough case and a pretty good value. Web Site: www.notestation.com/aximx3.htm ,

Home > Dell Axim X5:Otter Box Heavy Armor 2000 By Raynne413 When I first
received my Dell Axim X5 in December, I had certain requirements for a case.
Since I am a college student, I wanted a case that: 1 ) was hard and could be
tossed into a backpack with no problems or worries 2 ) would protect against
rapid temperature changes (since I am constantly going from one building to
another on campus) 3 ) would protect against weather changes (for those rainy
days that I forget my umbrella) 4 ) would protect against drops and falls and
most importantly 5 ) would hold the Axim with the extended battery in place. 1)
This hard case is constructed of fiberglass reinforced ABS plastic and
polycarbonate. This is one rugged case. Not only is it made of durable
materials, but it also has a recessed screen saver in order to add to the
protection for the screen. The screen saver is also surrounded by rubber bumpers
to add to even more protection. I will have no more worries about tossing this
into my book bag. Below is a picture of the Axim inside the case. 2) The case is
air-tight, which prevents condensation. This was one of my worries when going
from a temperature of 80 degrees to 30-something degrees outside. It also causes
the case to float when closed properly, which is wonderful for people that enjoy
activities such as boating, rafting, canoeing, etc. Below is a picture of the
case containing the Axim floating in the sink. Please remember, though, that
this case was not designed for use in water or underwater. 3) Not only is this
case air-tight, it is also water-resistant. I no longer have to worry about my
Axim on those rainy days (that were predicted to be sunny) when I forget my
umbrella. Below is a picture of my Axim in the sink under running water. 4) The
manufacturers of this case provide you with foam inserts to help the PDA fit
snugly inside the case and protect the PDA in case of a fall or drop. So after
gritting my teeth, closing my eyes, and arguing with myself for five minutes, I
dropped the case from a height of about five feet. After picking up the case,
the Axim booted up with no problems. The Axim hadn’t even shifted inside the
case. 5) The foam inserts that are included are of varying thickness. The
thinnest insert works perfectly with the Axim with the extended battery in
place. The thickest insert works perfectly with the regular battery in place.
You can also use the Axim while it is inside the case. While it is not a feature
that I plan on using often, someone else might wish to use this. The screen
saver is a membrane that covers the screen, but still allows button presses and
use of the stylus. While there is some reduced sensitivity, as would be
expected, it still works quite well. There is also a rubber stylus holder on the
outside of the case, so you do not have to open the case to get to a stylus.
Although the Axim stylus is too flat to fit snugly, it works perfectly with a
light-up stylus I received a few years ago. While this case is perfect for what
I wanted, I will look at a few things someone might not like, namely price and
size. 1) This case is on the high end up the spectrum at a price of $49.95, but
for what you are getting, it is worth it. This case is shock absorbent, water
resistant, and air tight. It can also be used with different PDAs. Therefore, if
you decide to switch to a different PDA, you do not have to order yet another
$50 case. 2) This case is not a case that you can slip into a pocket. It does,
however, come with a neoprene hand strap that makes it even easier to keep a
grip on the case. You can also order an optional belt-clip from the Otterbox
website. In order to better demonstrate the size, below is a picture of the case
next to a copy of War and Peace . In conclusion, I can say that this case is not
for someone that wants to slip the Axim in their pocket and go. It is perfect,
on the other hand, for students that want to toss their PDA in their bags,
business people that want to carry their PDA in their briefcase, policemen,
EMTs, or other people whose careers require them to be out in the weather, or
people that enjoy outdoor activities such as boating, canoeing, rafting, hiking,

Home > Dell Axim X5:Smarter Case #146 Smarter Case #146 Reviewed By: Chris
Leckness :: Rating: 8 Overview The Smarter Case #146 is a hard case designed to
hold a variety of PDA's including the Dell Axim. It comes in a variety of prints
and fabrics to let you express your indivuality. The case is made of protective
steel, is easy to open, and has space for a notepad and a stylus/pen. " Our line
of tweedy fabric cases gives an air of class sophistication to the Handheld
computer case unlike any other on the market" Conclusion I will start of by
saying that this style case is not for everyone. If you want to wear you Axim on
you or like to keep your Axim in your pocket, this is not for you. If you keep
your Axim in your backpack, purse, briefcase or other means - it seems to be a
great case. The protective steel case will protect your Axim from a lot of
abuse, but as most already know - it is not shock-proof. As for the fit of the
Axim in this case, The Axim is not the most petite PDA on the market, but it
does fit tightly in this case. You will have a little play with the horizontal
position. You will need to align the Axim as far to the left as possible for the
best fit. It will close fine, but you can tell that it is snug inside. You will
also have to use the velcro stickies that they provide to attach your Axim. The
look of the Smarter Case is very nice. It is protective without looking "too
industrial" . There are several pattern choices. I personally like the tweed
look, it looks very proffesional. The price of these are very nice considering
the quality. There are made in the USA and cost a mere $19.99. The notepad
refills are not restricted by an odd size making you buy a custom refills. Size
: 7 out of 10 - Like I said, the Axim is not too petite itself. Quality : 9 out
of 10 Value : 9 out of 10 Compatibility with the Axim : Fits almost too good.
Pros : Great for protection of your Axim. Cons : Tight Fit and Need for Velcro.

The Proporta aluminum case for Dell’s Axim is over-all a great investment for
any Axim owner. It is stylish and sleek, provides great protection for the
device, and still gives adequate access to the unit. The case is not much bigger
than the Axim itself, which was convenient, and it hardly weighs anything, an
additional convenience. I have gotten a number of compliments from my co-workers
on how nice the case looked: it’s brushed aluminum style is very sleek and
attractive. image The case is sturdy. I often put the unit in my back pocket,
and I’ve never been concerned about damaging the Axim. The fact that the
interior of the unit is padded provides a nice snug fit for the Axim, protecting
it from scratches and from bouncing around too much. One point for improvement
might be to pad the lid where it rolls over at the top, since I have sometimes
been concerned about scratches from that area because it is unpadded. image This
case provides a great deal of access to the Axim, without needing to take it
out. I am impressed that I am able to access every function except the
application buttons, D-Pad, and power button while the case is closed. Some nice
touches are that the power port and sync port are available, and that there is
even a small port for the speaker, while the lid is closed. However, I wish that
the access port for the rocker and record button was a little larger in the
length toward the SD access port, as it was a bit difficult to fully manipulate
the rocker with my largish thumb. In addition, the lid style makes it
uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time. The lid hinge is on the
right, and requires the user to hold the case with finger tips only on the right
side while the lid is open. I will take the Axim out of the case, or lay it flat
to do any prolonged text writing entry. Overall, I feel that this is a wonderful
addition to my Axim. Despite some small inconveniences regarding access, and the
need for padding on the lid of the unit, I feel that this is a huge improvement
over the case that comes with the Axim from Dell. Jason Killian Guest Reviewer
Editors Note: I echo Jason's comment on the hinge and how it is difficult to
hold for long periods of time with the lip open. That issue in not exclusive to
Proporta but to all aluminum and hard shell cases for PDA's. What they need to
develop is a double hinge that allows the lid to fold back behind the unit. If
you take a look at the iPAQ Style Pack cases and the rubber hinge you will get
the idea of what I am talking about. In a hard case it would be an armadillo
looking hinge and make the unit far more conformable to use for extended periods
of time. I plan on adding this editorial note to all future PDA hard case
reviews until someone comes up with a manufacturing solution. Email Print

Guest Review : E&B Dell Axim Slipper Case by Mark Teitelbaum D ate: 02/25/2003
Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say.
Product Requirements: Device: Dell Axim Pocket PC After receiving a Dell Axim
for Christmas, I have been searching for a quality, dependable case for my new
Pocket PC. Well, the search is over and the case is from E&B Cases , makers of
quality PDA cases. After nearly two weeks from my order date, my E&B Slipper
Axim case finally arrived. First off, there are two versions, a regular Slipper
case for $36.95 plus S&H, and a Slipper case with a belt clip for $41.95 plus
S&H. I am reviewing the regular version. When I first took it out of its
packaging, I fell in love with it. It is crafted with very high quality Nappa
cowhide leather. The case is very soft and has that oh-so-great smell of new
leather. The Slipper Axim case has the “EB” symbol on the front only. It is
closed using a magnetic strip and when opening it up, there are two slots for
money/credit cards/business cards, two SD/MMC card slots, and an all-purpose
miscellaneous slot, which I use for my CF cards. Since the closure method uses a
magnet, it is a good idea NOT to place credit cards in the card slots. The
magnet in the flap could damage them. [There are 2 slots for business cards and
money, 2 slots for SD/MMC cards, and a multipurpose slot] The case fits the Axim
perfectly and is very secure. I don’t think it’s possible for it to fall out of
the case. All of the buttons on the front are easily accessible and can all be
easily pushed while in the case (except for the power button which takes a bit
of practice to get used to.) Thankfully, there is no strip of leather between
the buttons and the screen. On the bottom of the case are holes cut out for the
power cord and sync cable to plug into. The left side has openings for the reset
button, record button, scroll wheel, and the SD/MMC card slot. Another neat
feature is that when closed, the top of the case has a small hole for headphones
to plug into so you can easily listen to MP3’s while the case is closed. [As you
can see, the case fits the Axim very well] The case provides protection for the
front, back, top and bottom, and both sides of the PDA. My Axim has survived
numerous drops onto concrete while in this case. The magnetic strip holding the
case closed is very strong so that it cannot accidentally open. There are three
problems with the case that I have found: 1) You cannot put the Axim in the
cradle while in the case. 2) It is kind of hard to insert SD cards in the two
storage slots in the cover of the case. Also, after finally inserting them, they
are hard to remove. 3) Anything put in the miscellaneous slot usually goes too
far back into the case. Other than that, I highly recommend this case for
anybody who wants something that gives full protection and easy access to
everything on their Axim. Now for the specs: Axim in the case: Length: 5 1/8”
Width: 3 1/8” Height: 1 ¼” (closed) 1” (open) Just the Axim: Length: 4 ¾” Width:
3” Height: ¾” ***All measures approximate*** Price: $36.95 for regular, $41.95
for belt-clip version. Pros: High quality, soft leather Pretty cheap compared to
Vaja cases (36.95 for regular, 41.95 for belt clip) Tightly holds the Axim Room
for memory cards and business cards/money Easy access to ALL buttons Cons: Can’t
put the Axim in the cradle while in the case Takes some practice to get SD cards
in and out Most anything you put in the misc. slot goes too far back Let us know
your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Back to Main
