for Hard Case for Palm Tungsten T3 Handheld "Case is nice, card storage is not."
dkd on 03-Jan-2004 07:58:39 PM Pros: Fast, easy to use, sleek, light weight.
Cons: Slots for SD card storage are backwards, so that you can't see card face
or label, and it exposes the metal contacts instead of protecting them. Design
flaw, imho. "doesn't keep palm secure..." rob on 14-Jan-2004 09:08:30 PM Pros:
Looks nice and has access to all features of t3. Cons: Biggest con is the darn
thing pops out of the case ALL THE DARN TIME!!! the mounting tabs in the back
are too small and the spring clip at the bottom is not sufficient to keep the t3
held in. So... be warned your t3 will not stay securely in the case. Read more

Protects the Palm Weaknesses: pops open when dropped, breaks easily Summary: I
am on my third case now. The first one had a defective hinge that broke within a
week, the second the little plastic lip on the inside that clicks it shut broke,
so now it doesn't stay securely shut. I have to say that it work though, because
I have dropped my Palm at least 5 times, and it is still working, which is why
I'm buying a third case. Reviewed by: adamlewinson, from CA Date reviewed:
08-Jul-04 Rating : Duration of ownership : 7 Days Strengths: Does what it's
supposed to - protects the Palm. Weaknesses: Opening the case takes getting used
to. Summary: If you own a Palm Tungsten E you really don't have much choice.
Either buy this case or your Palm will get dented and scratched and maybe
broken. The Palm fits in snugly and there is room for two memory cards. The Palm
will stay safe when knocking around in a briefcase or purse. The only downside
is it takes a few tries to get the hang of opening the case. But once you figure
it out, it's all good. Reviewed by: stormxshadow, from CA Date reviewed:
30-Jun-04 Rating : Duration of ownership : 1 Weeks Strengths: excellent fit,
quality material, nice look Weaknesses: no openings for usb and headphones
Summary: i got this case because its made by palm and i don't like buying third
party accessories. As expected, the case fits perfectly and the closure
mechanism is nice once you get used to snapping it open and closed. I never
dropped it so i dont kno if it pops open when dropped but i feel its a good case
for the price. Reviewed by: n5mzl, from TX Date reviewed: 07-Jun-04 Rating :
Duration of ownership : 6 Months Strengths: Provides good overall protection for
my Palm Tungsten E. Neat design in terms of looks; very "cool geeky"...:)
Weaknesses: Case gets scuffed and scratched easily. Will tend to pop open if
dropped. Summary: I don't have any complaints about my Palm Tungsten E hard
case. I bought it at the same time I got my Tungsten E, because I had heard the
leather front flap the E came with was sudden death to the E's metal face. For
the price, you can't beat this thing with a stick for protecting your Tungsten
E. It does have slots inside the front cover for a couple of memory modules
should you need the storage for your MP3 flashes. After reading some of the
other reviews, my first thought was "What a bunch of whiners". Look here,
people. This thing costs all of about $20-$25, depending on where you buy it
(less the usual shipping). Did you think you could drop it on the floor and
stomp on it, or use it as a Frisbee or whatever and have it come through the
experience in pristine condition? For this price? Let's get real here. Sure it
scuffs and scratches easy. Better it than my expensive (by comparison) PDA. Even
then, after six months of being carried everywhere I go, along with the
occasional bang and bump, the scratches it does have are not bad. The other two
main complaints I saw about this case is the difficulty in opening it, and the
lack of notches or holes for the USB and power cables, so as to be able to
connect these up with either the case closed, or without the PDA sticking up at
an angle with the plugs connected. These issues are, in fact, related. First
off, the case is very easy to open, if you know how. And here's how; hold the
case in your left hand, with the edge opposite the hinged side facing you. See
that little pyramid symbol on the right half of the case? Take your right thumb
and press down on it. The back half of the case slides a fraction of an inch
laterally, relative to the front half. You will then feel and hear a pop and the
case opens. Very easy. But as you can now see, this is why there are no notches
for the USB or power cables in the case. If you closed the case with the cables
in, you would be hard-pressed to open it again, because of the way the case
opens. THAT'S why there are no accomodations for the cables, because having the
cables hanging out of the closed case would make it very hard, if not
impossible, to open (without breaking something). The is also why, if you drop
it, sometimes the case will pop open, IF it hits on a corner or edge opposite
the hinge. Solution; don't drop the case if you can help it. The bottom line is
that, for the price ($20, give or take a couple of bucks), the Palm hard case is
an excellent accessory for the Palm Tungsten E. If you want something with a few
more bells and whistles, not to mention something to put your credit cards in,
go check out one of those $40 Proporta cases for the Tungsten. As usual, you get
what you pay for. Reviewed by: gabriellebowman, from IL Date reviewed: 15-May-04
Rating : Duration of ownership : 7 Months Strengths: Rigid case offers some
protection. Weaknesses: Difficult to open, close & hold safely. Pops open upon
impact. No slots for credit cards & money. Finish scratches easily Summary: This
case was the only one offered specifically for the Tungsten E by Palm at the
time of my purchase. While it does have the sleek shell that matches the look of
my Tungsten E and it has protected my Tungsten E from objects in my briefcase
and purse, it lost that "look" in doing so. Once the metal is scratched or
dented it starts to look a bit ratty. Also, it's rigidity paired with its cheap
clasp allow it to come open upon impact. Once open, the case lets the Tungsten E
to swing freely allowing any amount of damage. I have this case pop completely
open so that my Tungsten E landed on its face, when a strap on a bag I was
carrying broke spilling its contents. Presumably, that is part of what a case
should protect against. After this event, my case was scratched though through
sheer luck my Tungsten E was not. It is also difficult to safely and comfortably
use in the field, or a store or anywhere where you may have anything more than
just your PDA in your hand. It's smooth metal makes it more difficult to hold
than a leather case which is more naturally slip resistant. Another problem is
that you need to flip it out to use anything other than use the navigation
buttons. This includes syncing, charging, listening to MP3s and switching SD
cards as well as retrieving and putting away your stylus. There are also no slot
for cards or cash. Though this is a small thing it was something I appreciated
about the sleek leather case I had for my previous PDA. I will not purchase
another nor would I suggest anyone else buy one. I will most likely purchase a
leather holster for my Tungsten E. Reviewed by: eashefrin, from MD Date
reviewed: 07-May-04 Rating : Duration of ownership : 1 Days Strengths: Sturdy,
provides good protection; storage slots for expansion cards (if you use them)
are handy. Weaknesses: Swiveling spine hinge makes it difficult to latch closed;
once closed, it can take a moment to open. No accomodation for power switch,
stylus, charger or hotsync makes it awkward to use. Very bulky. Summary: Biggest
problem is lack of cutouts for the features you use all the time. Can't plug in
the hotsync cable and/or charger and leave the Palm in the case lying flat on
the desk; have to flip the Palm forward out of the case to get to the stylus,
power switch or any of the jacks, and this is annoying. The sturdiness of the
case is offset by its weight and bulkiness. Reviewed by: taowolf7, from RI Date
reviewed: 27-Apr-04 Rating : Duration of ownership : 15 Days Strengths: durable;
convenient to use; nice design Weaknesses: no cut-outs for plug-in cables;
sometimes hard to open Summary: This is a nicely designed case. It definitely
seems well-designed with the user in mind! The slots for holding expansion cards
(holds 2) is a handy feature. I'm not sure why the description says that the
cover is "spring-loaded"... it isn't; however, the cover does fold back on
itself (much like a spiral notebook does), which is convenient when using the
PDA, particularly for left-handed users like myself. The Tungsten attaches
securely to the inside of the case along the groove used for attaching the
flip-cover included with the PDA. The case definitely feels quite solid and
sturdy. The case has only two "problems," which are relatively minor. The first
is that there are no slots or openings in the case to allow Hotsync, charger,
and headphone cables to be easily plugged into the PDA. In a way this probably
actually adds to the sturdiness of the case, but such features would've been
useful. Secondly, the cover is occassionally difficult to open, requiring a
little bit of effort to do so. Again, however, this also probably makes it more
sturdy. Altogether, the hard case is a good way of storing and protecting your
Tungsten E, and particularly worthwhile if you find an online site selling it at
a discount. Reviewed by: slovak1, from AZ Date reviewed: 19-Apr-04 Rating :
Duration of ownership : 1 Weeks Strengths: Very durable, good looking and fits
very nicely in your back pocket. Weaknesses: Does not have cutouts for the data
card, power connector or USB connector. Summary: This is my second hard case I
have bought for my Palm Pilot, 515 which I lost (I hope the person that found it
is enjoying it), and now for my Tungsten E. Reviewed by: gandrews, from IL Date
reviewed: 03-Mar-04 Rating : Duration of ownership : 2 Months Strengths: none
Weaknesses: latch Summary: This case is a cheap piece of junk. After only two
months the latch broke. This case latches shut via a very small piece of molded
plastic (less than 1/16"). It's amazing that it lasted this long. Palm packages
this case in a plastic clamshell that does not allow one to examine the inside
of the case until one buys it (hmmm). By then it's too late. Save yourself the
disappointment and buy a leather case with a positive metal latch. Oh yeah, the
fancy brushed metal case also scratches very easily. After two months it will
look like you used it for a hockey puck. Powered by PriceGrabber.com

P30 3 Mar PREVIEWS E-mail: Choose format HTML Text Palm Tungsten T Hard Case By
Larry Garfield, Saturday 20 September 2003 Larry Garfield tries not to drop his
handhelds all that often, but sometimes he has to in order to test out a case.
Read on to see if it survived Palm's Tungsten T Hard Case. Palm's Tungsten T and
Tungsten T2 handhelds may be impressive pieces of hardware, but they're also a
significant investment. No one wants to damage their handheld, but the TT and T2
include only a simple clear plastic faceplate for protection. For users that
want a more drop-friendly handheld, Palm offers a Hard Case for the Tungsten T
line that does a fair job of armoring the device. The case is composed of an
attractive light aluminum exterior and black plastic interior. It opens
book-like, with the front of the case swinging out to the left. It's very easy
to use and spring-loaded to keep it open, but of course then gets in the way of
left-handed stylus users. The top of the case and top left side are open,
allowing access to the stylus, IR port, SD card, power button, headphone jack,
and voice recorder. There is also a thumb-sized notch on the top back to let the
user extend the device. Ill: Palm The device slides easily into the case, with a
gentle spring at the bottom of the case pushing the device up so that the
Universal Connector clips in the back catch on two hooks, securing it in place.
Removing the device is equally easy, consisting of pressing the device down then
pulling forward. The front cover also sports two SD card slots on the inside,
although they are oriented so that the card's electrical contacts are exposed.
We ran some informal drop tests with the case onto a carpeted floor. (We didn't
want to damage the device inside too much.) When the device landed flat on its
front or back, it held the device and cards quite well. Landings on the bottom
or side, however, sometimes caused the device to come loose. In one case, about
a 0.75 meter drop, the case and card flew out of the case completely. The device
was scratch-free, however, in all of our tests, as was the case itself.
Availability The Palm Tungsten T Hard Case is available now for $29.95 USD.
Conclusion While not recommended for a warehouse floor or high-impact
environment, Palm's Tungsten T Hard Case provides good protection against small
drops and scratches, the threats most handhelds face regularly. The case does
not cover up any ports or buttons, as some cases do. At least, not if one is
right handed. Lefties, unfortunately, will probably have to look elsewhere for a
case. Righties, however, should find it a reliable addition to their handheld
arsenal. What’s positive: Easy to use, good scratch protection What’s negative:
Lefty-unfriendly, only limited drop protection Overall: E-mail this story Print

When will someone fix Calendars/Categories for ical? - kp* Hands-on Review:
Tungsten T logo ® By: Dan Royea PalmEvolution.com October 30, 2002 Introduction:
Palm Inc.'s new flagship model is the Tungsten T , their first device running
the new Palm OS5 on an ARM-architecture processor. Also referred to as the m550
, the " TT " has an intriguing compact design, a vibrant high-resolution screen,
advanced multimedia capabilities and integrated Bluetooth wireless technology.
With an advanced feature set and a $499 price tag, it's aimed squarely at
executives and power users. Design: The Tungsten T has clean lines and a nicely
sculpted, and surprisingly compact shape. The display dominates the front and is
housed in an elegant grey anodized aluminum body with textured black plastic
accents. Because usage studies have indicated that users are looking up
information the majority of the time, Palm implemented a transformable design
that facilitates one-handed lookup and keeps the size to a minimum. The key (and
most controversial) design feature of the unit is the sliding lower section
which can be extended to expose the Graffiti area for text entry, and then be
retracted again to maintain it's compact form. TT backside: open The slider
action is very smooth, and it locks positively into place in either
configuration. The feel is plesantly solid, thanks to six points of contact.
These include twin channels in the back, side bars, plus a pair of slider pads
on the front. Palm realizes that this design decision is a potential source of
failure (and therefore costly warranty issues) and has taken pains to ensure
that it will be very reliable. Part of their design criteria included passing a
100,000 open/close test cycle. (To put that in practical terms, even if you open
and close the device 3 times an hour, 16 hours a day, the slider should provide
at least 6 years of faithful service.) My only question is whether the design is
self-cleaning, or whether there is a risk of accumulated pocket lint and grunge
fouling the slider. Only time will tell. TT in UC modem with cover The rear of
the sliding section extend two thirds of the way up the back and include the
back attachment points for the Universal Connector, so these accessories will
function in both the compact and extended configurations. The T's slider can
also be configured to turn the handheld on and off. The second key feature is
the new D-pad which replaces the former up / down buttons. This control provides
4-way navigation with a press-to-select domed center button. Its
front-and-center location requires a grip adjustment, and while some people will
prefer a side-mounted jog wheel, once you've adapted, the extra utility of
two-dimensional control is absolutely great. The feel of the D-pad is superb,
with very positive action and is much nicer than any similar control I've tried.
The standard four application buttons lie on either side of the D-pad in
standard configuration. They have a slightly convex shape raised just above the
case surface for good fingertip feel, however this style isn't exactly
stylus-friendly. A nice design detail is the tiny black plastic frame that
surrounds each button. A colored Palm logo behind a transparent "lens" is found
centered on the upper edge, and it's only known function is to look cool. It is
flanked by the "Tungsten | T" logo on the left and a 2x5 grid of speaker holes
on the right. While there is a green charging LED in the top left corner, it
doesn't provide charging status indication, and there is no LED indicator for
Bluetooth. TT: left side profile A small Voice Recorder button site just below a
small port for the microphone on the upper left side. Because of their
proximity, you have to be careful not to cover the mic with your thumb when
recording! Above these lies the stereo headphone jack which supports a standard
3.5mm plug (headphones not included). TT: top and bottom profiles The bottom of
the TT is a plain panel of textured black plastic with the "Palm Universal
Connector" situated near the rear, and the top is cleanly laid out in basic
black-on-black. The power button is on the left side, which is a little awkward
if you're holding the device in your left hand. In the center is an infrared
transceiver window, and the SD card slot (fitted with a plastic blank to keep
dust out) behind that. The stylus silo is on the right, with the sylus end
projecting out slightly from the surrounding surface. A push-and-release and the
stylus extends by half an inch to allow it to be withdrawn from the silo. And
what a stylus! TT: stylus The polished steel body has an inset plastic writing
tip - it looks good, it feels good and the tip can even be used for the reset
button on the back. The stylus docks securely back into the silo, and with a
second push-and-release it compacts back out of the way. The Tungsten T has the
smallest footprint of any Palm OS device to date, edging out the m515 and even
the SJ30. While not the thinnest or lightest, it is very comfortable in the hand
and the "pocket-ability" factor is very high. TT & SJ30 & m505 [TT; SJ30; m505]
Overall, it is an beautifully thought-out and well executed design. OMAP logo
Hardware: At the heart of the Tungsten T lies the dual-core Texas Instruments
OMAP1510 , which incorporates both an ARM925 processor and a C55x DSP (digital
signal processor) to distribute the load between operating system tasks and
"heavy-lifting" such as security and multimedia tasks. The OMAP1510 also
incorporates controllers for the LCD display, USB and SD card interfaces, and
Bluetooth. All of this computing power does not have the expected electical
power penalty, as the chip is optimized for power efficiency. From figures
supplied by Palm, at 432 MIPS (millions of instructions per second) the
processor consumes 46 mW/MIPS, or about 200 mW. On a 3.7V system, this
translates to 53mA power consumption, which is extremely good relative to the
less capable Dragonball processors. Memory specs are 16MB RAM and 4MB flash ROM
(8MB for international version). The SD bus is 1-bit slot (not the newest 4-data
line configuration) but card access seems much faster than on an m515 (which may
be due to the OMAP?). It will support the largest capacity SD and MMC memory
cards available, and is also SDIO-compatible for peripherals. The TT's screen is
a 320x320 pixel, 16-bit color reflective display, with front-lighting adjustable
over a broad range. It is very bright, good color balance, and no "grid lines" -
in a word: superb. It compares extremely well to the reference-standard Clie
T665 . T665C & TT screens The digitizer, which uses a glass element, has a great
low-friction surface, but is slightly "puffy" with obvious deflection when
touched. The Graffiti area silkscreen print includes little Clock and Contrast
tap-icons and the newer star-shaped Favorites . For audio, the TT has a
front-mounted true speaker, which provides decently loud volume for alarms and
listening to voice memos, though not as loud as the speakers on the Clie T- or
NR/NX-series. Alternately, any stereo headphones with a standard 3.5mm plug can
be used, and will be the preferred option for listening to music. An unpleasant
surprise is that there is no MP3 application in the software bundle (apparently
RealAudio for Palm was supposed to be included, but wasn't complete by the
shipping target and will available "soon" as a free download from Palm's
website). As on the m515 , in addition to audible alarms, vibration alert is
included, as is support for blinking LED blinking alerts. Power is supplied by a
rechargeable lithium ion polymer (LiIon Poly) battery, nominally rated at 3.7V
900mAh. Palm's claimed battery life is 7 days under the following usage
scenario: default brightness (40%); 30 minutes / day PIM application look-up and
entry; and no use of SD slot, audio or Bluetooth. Unofficial test results from
an unnamed video application developer: 3.5 hours battery life when streaming 12
fps video from an SD card with the display set at 50%. Recharge time in the
included USB HotSync cradle is approximately 2 hours for a fully discharged
battery. It is truly unfortunate that with so many other great features, Palm
didn't include a bi-color LED to indicate a full charge! The TT supports a
variety of connectivity options: the Universal Connector (for USB and serial),
IrDA; SDIO and Bluetooth (v1.1 compliant). TT: clear cover The included cover is
made from transparent polycarbonate that clips into indents on the sides of the
device. There is a hole to access the D-pad which is fine for looking up
information. However, to use the touch screen or the TT in expanded mode, you
have to remove the cover and this is somewhat inconvenient. The cover does clip
onto the back of the device for temporary storage, which is a nice touch. The
cover is absolutely clear, but is somewhat prone to scratching, and many TT
owners will likely purchase an optional case. Palm Inc. is offering three
optional cases: a leather "book-style", an interesting-looking slip case and an
aluminum hard case. SPECIFICATIONS Size & Weight: 4.0-4.8" x 3.0" x 0.6"; 5.6

1.1 No Guts, No Glory! note: My apologies to PIC readers who enjoyed my Zire
"guts" image and were anticpating the same here - I was asked not to disassemble
the review unit. I guess I'll have to get a personal unit for a follow-up report
;-) Software: Palm OS 5 Palm OS5 includes a number of standard enhancements
including support for 128-bit encryption (RC4 + SSL for internet applications);
hi-resolution displays; 802.11b wireless (WiFi); and 16-bit audio. Because most
of the enhancements are "under the hood", OS5 doesn't have many obvious
enhancements over OS4 other than the more attractive application icons and
sharper fonts. Heh, and the use of ARM processors - these speed up many
applications, and most software seems very "snappy". (One strange side effect is
that sometimes using scroll bars makes the displayed list go by *way* too
fast!). One of the most intriguing software features on the TT is the way the
D-pad is integrated to support the one-handed functionality. For starters: with
the device off, a short press of the Select button pops up the time and date for
a couple of seconds then shuts down, or a double click and the device is on.
Holding Select down for two seconds switches to the application launcher screen,
and you can use the D-pad to navigate to your application of choice and launch
it with another press of Select . But there's other enhancements, particularly
to the core PIM apps. The coolest example is in Address : a right press
activates Look Up: and it's easy to quickly navigate to an entry, and then open
it with another press of Select . If you then right press again, it opens the
Quick Connect feature which brings up the list of contact options for that
entry. If your TT is paired with a Bluetooth phone, you can then dial the
number, or send an SMS from the SMS app, or send email from VersaMail . Now
that's slick! However, not everything is accessible with the Graffiti area
hidden: for Menu access one can tap the app title bar, but there's no access to
Find or backlight control. Clie JogDial menu extensions support this, and Palm
Inc. should work on a solution. This new D-pad functionality is Palm
Inc.-specific and not a standard OS5 feature. Details of its use were provided
to select 3rd party developers prior to launch, but are available to all
registered developers now, so it wouldn't be surprising to see increasing
support for this added to many applications. Games may benefit from this in a
big way... Other changes Palm has implemented include reworking the Preferences
app. Instead of a category drop-down list of options; the options are broken out
into four groups: General : Date & Time; Digitizer; Formats; Power; Security
(which was a separate application); Sounds & Alerts; Communications : Bluetooth,
Connection, Network, Phone; Personal : Buttons, Owner, Shortcuts; and Others :
for third party additions (and perhaps the Keyboard preferences "application"
belongs here?). This adds a much-need organization to the expanding variety of
Preferences, and hopefully Palm will submit this to PalmSource and other
Licensees will adopt it. The Tungsten T ROM is preloaded with the core set of
Palm OS PIM and System applications. Other applications in ROM include Expense
(but you still can't define Expense type...) and Palm Inc.'s own World Clock
(very basic), NotePad (*so* much better on hires!), and Voice Memo (good, alarm
feature is cool) CDs Going through the Installation process on the CD adds Quick
Tour demo, and a number of phone-related applications: SMS, Dialer and Phone
Link plus drivers for a number of Bluetooth-enabled cell phones. You can also
install Keyboard (v1.9T) for the Stowaway (and the *very* interesting-looking
new Palm UltraThin Keyboard from ThinkOutside) though apparently a newer version
will be required :( The process is quite user-friendly, and even goes so far as
to walk one through setting up one's business card. Palm Inc. includes three of
their own Internet applications as well: VersaMail email client (the successor
of the venerable MultiMail SE ) which features online and desktop syncing,
attachment support, filtering, POP and IMAP support; WebBrowser Pro - a
proxy-based solution that supports SSL, JavaScript, and downloading .prc files
(but doesn't support .zip extraction); and WAP Browser. Additional bundled
applications include: Documents To Go (Pro), MobileDB , Acrobat Reader , Palm
Reader ; ArcSoft PhotoBase , and powerOne Personal . Also on the CD are the
latest vesions of Palm Desktop for Windows and Mac, which includes plugins for
Expense , NotePad and Voice Memo , as well as Chapura PocketMirror for syncing
with MS Outlook . PalmSource estimates that 80% of existing PalmOS applications
are compatible with OS5, and Palm Inc. has provided a free AppCheck application
and a compatibility reference page on their site. It is by no means complete,
but shows that many of the most popular apps work fine. How? The Palm operating
system is running in native 32-bit mode on the ARM processors, and there is a
hidden application called "PACE" (Palm Application Compatibility Environment)
which translates "Dragonball-formatted" system calls on the fly. As long as
applications are properly written, they typically just work. Some applications
are now being released which take advantage of the power of OS5/ARM: Kinoma
Movie player is a great example of this, and there are more to come. Bluetooth
logo A final note:Bluetooth ("Bt") drivers and extensions are also in ROM, which
opens various wireless possibilities: [1] interacting with other Bt PDAs, [2]
HotSyncing and exchanging files with a Bt-equipped PC, [3] accessing a Bt Access
Point for wireless internet access, [4] printing to a Bt-printer, and of course,
[5] interfacing with a Bt-enabled cell phone, and in particular, using it as a
wireless modem. To simplify set up for pairing with a Bt cell phone, Palm has
included a PhoneLink application, which is essentially a Bluetooth Setup Wizard
and there is also a LinkUpdater application to simplify updating services and
drivers as they become available. Interaction with other Bluetooth Palm OS
devices is not restricted to just other TT owners, as both the Bluetooth SDIO
card and Bluetooth Memory Stick peripherals are available. The latter,
unfortunately, is only available in Japan at present, but should be released in
Europe very soon, and we can hope that it will be available in North America
before too long. Aside from simply sending files etc. (which is very similar to
infrared beaming) a few sample Bt-applications are included: BlueBoard, BlueChat
and three Bt-enhanced games from HandMark (Monopoly and Scrabble are only trial
versions). There will undoubtably be more Bt-enabled applications available in
the near future. Watch for a more in-depth exploration of Bluetooth here on Palm
Infocenter in the days to come... ;-) Summary: The Tungsten T is a very
attractive high-end model that combine a great design, powerful features, and
small size, and should prove very tempting to their target market of executives
and power users. It is a more-than-worthy successor to the former flagship
model, the m515 and a great introductory OS5/ARM device. There is a lot to like
about the TT , and very little to criticize. Congratulations to the Product

review spike @ 10/30/2002 3:59:47 PM great review... but haven't got a chance to
finish it =) RE: great review Mr T @ 10/30/2002 5:07:17 PM I second that. An
Excellent Review of what appears to be an Excellent PDA. Congrats to palm. I
shall become a Tungsten T owner as soon as I can find one in stock at the local
Staples. Thanks Again and Kudos to the team at PIC for providing such an
informative review. Mr. T RE: great review graph @ 10/30/2002 8:19:22 PM I was
hoping palm would avoid sony's mistake of choosing brighter screen and faster
processor over battery life. it was something good that sets apart sony and
palm. RE: great review zipwire @ 10/30/2002 8:24:45 PM Finally, Palm has managed
to dig themselves out of the hole they have been stuck for so long. Saying that,
I hope this time around they have tested the machine to death and not face
issues they had with the m505 cradle or something like that. I have long given
up Palm and moved to Sony but this time I might just move back to Palm.
Congrats, Palm! RE: great review Palm_Otaku @ 10/30/2002 8:30:40 PM graph: I was
hoping palm would avoid sony's mistake of choosing brighter screen and faster
processor over battery life. A little perspective: (1) the screen is very bright
and I personally set it at around 25% (2) the ARM processors provide exceptional
MIPS/mW performance. I haven't had time to get long-terms battery life figures,
but subjectively-speaking, the TT has been able to provide all-day heavy use on
a single charge. - D RE: great review hotpaw4 @ 10/30/2002 8:44:40 PM
Preliminary tests of the Tungsten T battery life with backlight on the lowest
setting, CPU 90%+ idle, bluetooth off, temperature 72 to 68 degrees F, from a 2
full hour charge: 4.5 hours till the first battery warning, another 30 minutes
of annoying extremely low voltage warnings before I ended the test. Preliminary
indications are that the battery life might be 30% to 40% greater with the
backlight off; still not enough for a cross country plane flight. This is
roughly in the same ballpark as the T615C. RE: great review Palm_Otaku @
10/30/2002 9:37:05 PM That's very interesting Ron - what application did you use
for the 90% idle test? I haven't done any formal testing yet, but got 4+ hours
using PalmReader, reading ebook from SD card, screen brightness set quite low
(maybe 15-20% on the slider bar). - Dan RE: great review Larken @ 10/31/2002
8:33:03 AM I got my hands on a demo of the Tungsten T last night. I was very
impressed. My wife has a T665 and I have a m515 currently. We compared them side
by side, and the Tungsten display was superb. Icons and fonts were as crisp as
I've seen, and the background was the closest I've seen to actual white. Even
with the backlight turned off, the display was easy to read in typical office
lighting. I didn't see any native apps to make noise on the unit, so I beamed
Bejewelled over to it, and the speaker sounded quite nice compared to the m515
speaker. Sound quality was on par with the T665, but the max volume was not as
high. The stylus felt good in your hand as long as it was telescoped out; it was
a bit too short for my hand in it's small form. I was impressed at the lack of
friction as the stylus glided across the digitizer. My only concern with this
unit was in regards to .mp3 playback. It doesn't seem to be "made" for that as
much as the T665, so I would be interested in seeing what kind of drain that
puts on power. I also didn't know if an .mp3 player application would support
powering down the screen during playback like the Sony hardware does. All in
all, I would say that Palm has put out a fantastic unit. I will definitely be
picking on up as soon as I find a buyer for my m515. If anyone is interested,
let me know :) RE: great review ardee @ 10/31/2002 9:11:23 AM Yup, a VERY
well-done review. And that's rare. ;-) Sony beware speed-angel @ 10/31/2002
9:32:06 AM I am a sony fan but I think I am only willing to wait another 2
months for the next T series. Otherwise I might just switch back to Palm. The
reason I am waiting is that I don't quite like the form factor still but the
features and functions of the new Tungsten is quite impressive. Based on the
track-record I am willing to wait until the new T-series comes out since they
are quite innovative and if the NX series is an indication, I sure am looking
forward to the new model. RE: great review andykk @ 10/31/2002 10:11:10 AM The
review is really great. But I am quite curious about the memory space of the
unit. How many RAM is available for loading applications on to it? I'm quite
worry about it as I know that OS5 would utilize some of the RAM for running.
I've a chance to see another review (detailed) of the new NX70 of Sony, it has
16 MB RAM but not all is available for user to use. And plugging in the Sony CF
WLan card used up extra memeory for the drivers which the review claim to used
up another 5MB of RAM. So let's do the maths and only a merely 10 MB maybe left.
For users like me who use Chinese OS would require about 2 MB of RAM for the
storage, which means maybe no more than 10 MB is usable...... I really worry
about it, can anyone from PIC get more information about the memory situation of
this unit? RE: great review palmist @ 10/31/2002 11:19:13 AM 14MB for users, 2MB
for swap/scratch (it isn't clear yet) space. Should be plenty for most of us. If
not, stick in a memory card. RE: great review vincepalm @ 11/4/2002 6:24:11 AM
Yes, great review :) But were is the Java Virtual Machine? Is it included with
the software bundle? I don't see any mention of it in the palm.com web site.
Palmsource was supposed to partner with insignia.com to bundle it with PalmOS 5!
This is a big disappointment! RE: Sony beware nanurse @ 11/4/2002 6:45:23 PM I'm
with you on the next T series. I've now looked at both the Tungsten and the NX
series and they appear to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. The NX series is
way too large a form factor, forget about sticking that thing in shirt pocket
and the Tungsten, though it's small has no built in ability to play MP3, okay so
what if 3rd party vendors are working on it, I seem to remember something about
it you won't be able to play music in suspend mode like Sony's hold feature. I'm
not sold on that slider mechanism either, what's the purpose? If they really
wanted to make it functional then that are should have been a virtual Grafiti
area, the unit is small as it is so getting rid of 3/4 inch isn't any big deal.
Sony better rethink that wireless LAN slot also. Maybe I'm just slow but I'm not
planning on the surfing the web on my PDA and if I'm close enough to wireless
hub, I', gonna use my protable. What I would like however is the T series to
have built in Bluetooth. I can transfer my mail from my cell to my palm using
Bluetooth and that just makes good 'ol common sense. If I'm going to plop down
500 for another PDA it will have the following: 1. Voice Record (long overdue on
Palm) 2. Built in Bluetooth, how hard can it be, they can fit it onto a memory
stick 3. Palm OS 5 (It's defintely faster than 4.1) 4. The ability to play MP3s
out of the box 5. A formfactor that fits into my shirt pocket. Is that asking
too much, come on Sony and Palm, don't make think about Pocket PC! RE: great
review johnsoax @ 11/5/2002 10:31:38 AM Well The TT satisfies 4 out of the 5 of
your requirements. That sounds pretty good to me. MP3 on the handheld is
overrated. (Thats why I have a Archos Jukebox - 20 gigs and it records). Alex
Johnson Proud Owner of a Handera 330 RE: great review Fernando @ 11/11/2002
6:20:50 PM palm TT will have mp3 playback available free as soon as real
networks and palm are done working on this... if any palm programmer is reading,
HOW MUCH LONGER UNTIL TT GETS MP3 PLAYBACK? it should've been included out of
the box.... RE: great review andrewholler @ 1/17/2003 10:43:46 PM Very well
written review. Almost wants me to cut off my arm to get one. How can I afford
one? For the money they are worth, I can't cough up that cough as a youngen. RE:
great review TTrules @ 5/24/2003 6:18:56 PM I am just letting everyone know that
I got my TT for $298.00 over buydig.com RE: great review Linus @ 6/4/2003
4:09:02 AM Seeing as the Tungsten T has a mic, speaker and bluetooth shouldn't
there be some software to make the T act as a bluetooth handset to connect with
a bluetooth phone? Reply to this comment Processor Speed Drummer4Life05 @

Admin @ 10/30/2002 4:46:23 PM Check out Kinoma Player:
http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=4467 Movies are excellent on the
Tungsten T, think of the possibilities for mobile sales presenations,
entertainment, etc... RE: Movies paul10010 @ 10/30/2002 5:25:46 PM It is
available in the UK I live in Derby and Ive got one, and its great! RE: Movies
irv @ 10/30/2002 6:44:44 PM Who has it in stock ! I could order one from Palm
Direct but there is no delivery info, Dabs.com and Expansys.com both say within
3-10 days, but I want to walk into a shop and buy one......PC World? Dixons? BTW
I live on the South Coast, so please don't say "Derby Electronics" !!! RE:
Movies Zuber @ 10/31/2002 2:51:21 AM Just ordered it online from a big name
retailer for £299 (inc. VAT). It might be a missprint, so I'll have to see if it
turns up or I get a phone call. If it does turn up, I'll let you know ASAP. If
it is widely available for £299 including VAT, then I'll take back everything I
said about it being overpriced. Zuber RE: Movies simonwhitaker @ 10/31/2002
3:46:25 AM Ah Zuber! Wanna let us know which retailer it is? Please? RE: Movies
simonwhitaker @ 10/31/2002 4:40:10 AM Don't worry - i found it. At the current
exchange rate, i make UK£299.99 = US$464 including all taxes. It must be a
mistake so i called them up and they confirmed that "although they don't have
them in stock, or on the system, the quoted website price is the price that i'll
pay". We'll see i guess ;) RE: Movies gemikon @ 10/31/2002 5:15:37 AM Hi! can
you please tell me where the TT is already available in UK? Especially in
London? RE: Movies IanJD @ 10/31/2002 6:35:34 AM I'm intrigued; I've seen it as
low as £340, who has it for under £300? RE: Carphone Warehouse Norm @ 10/31/2002
1:23:33 PM Had a problem with my credit card so had to phone them. The price is
a mistake and it will go up to £399.99 tomorrow. They will honour any orders
made today at £299.99. You can phone them up to 8pm or try online. They have
just got stock and I hope mine may still go out today for delivery tomorrow
although I won't know for sure until tomorrow. RE: Movies IanJD @ 10/31/2002
4:29:52 PM Thanks for the tip; mine will apparently ship tomorrow to turn up on
monday. Time to find out how many of my 70 apps will survive to OS5... RE:
Movies paul10010 @ 10/31/2002 4:35:19 PM Got mine from www.palm.com/uk for £389.
Ordered Monday recieved wednesday. Dont bother waiting for the shops just order
one you wont be dissapointed!! The next accessory I will buy for my TT is an
Armani suit and a pair of Ray-Bans, it looks so cool! RE: Carphone warehouse
Zuber @ 10/31/2002 7:17:11 PM Beat me too it. Just got an email confirming the
Order will be dispatched when I got home. I thought the price might be a mistake
and expected a phone call/email saying sorry but ... Good to see they will be
sending the goods. Hope you guys all visit the site and get the orders in before
the site update. I just checked, and it is still showing at £299 Zuber Zuber RE:
Movies SPACEBAR @ 10/31/2002 10:57:37 PM Zuber, can you tell me which retailer
it is? Please? RE: Movies Zuber @ 11/1/2002 2:23:27 AM Sorry, I went to bed
after posting last night. Price on the site is now £399. Made my day. A assumed
the retailer was clear from the title. Carphone Warehouse. Hope you figured it
out. So everyone that bought it at £299 is going to send me £10 as agreed yes :)
Zuber Zuber RE: Carphone Warehouse Norm @ 11/1/2002 2:35:30 AM IT'S ARRIVED!
IT'S TINY! Bit heavier than it looks but I was spoilt by my old Palm V. Box a
bit damaged, which is annoying as I tend to keep boxes. It's got six languages -
hence my question posted below about JackSprat support. The default date when
first starting was 5 August 2001! (Now all I have to do, apart from installing
all my apps, is sell my NR70V with load of accessories, like a Vaja case and
128mb memory sticks. Anyone interested before I start going to ebay? The
accessories I'd mail anywhere but the NR70V only to the UK.) Thinking of
importing a 256mb Sandisk SD card for about £105. Anyone else in the UK want to
join me in a bulk buy to save postage? RE: Movies Zuber @ 11/1/2002 3:16:30 AM
Not fair, I ordered mine first :) Regarding getting an SD card from abroad. I'd
be careful if I were you. You may end up paying Duty on it when it arrives and
hence find it cheaper to buy local. Plus, there are garantee issues etc. Hope I
get mine today or I'm going to return it and cancel my otder (Not). Zuber RE:

Movies drsimnal @ 11/4/2002 7:00:14 PM Hey guys--I got the Kinoma app to play
movie trailers. I downloaded Spiderman from the Sony site, but when I played it
there was no sound! What did I do wrong? Thanks, Andrea Reply to this comment
