Rhinoskin Titanium Hardcase for the Handspring Visor by Julie Strietelmeier
Last date revised: 05/10/2002 Product Requirements: Device: Visor, Visor Neo,
Visor Pro, Visor Platinum, and Visor Deluxe If you are looking for the ultimate
protection for your Handspring Visor PDA, you need look no further than the
Rhinoskin Titanium Hardcase. Like their other titanium cases, this one is also
made of 100% Grade 1 titanium with a scratch resistant finish. Weighing in at
approximately 6 oz. and with a size of 5.1 x 3.6 x 1 inches, it definitely can't
be called a bantamweight case. But, it does offer heavyweight protection. Molded
to match the shape of the Visor, this case can be called a clam shell or book
style case. It opens like a book where the PDA lies in the right shell of the
case with the cover being the left shell. The interior of the case is lined with
a thin layer of neoprene which helps to absorb the shock associated with drops
and bumps. I'm not sure how much actual protection it can give in that situation
as the lining is pretty thin. Instead of using Velcro or the stylus silo to
attach the PDA to this case, a plastic holster is employed. This holster is
incorporated into the hinge which makes it easy to flip the PDA up when you need
to access the stylus slot, reset hole or Springboard slot. The Visor slides into
and out of this holster easily and does not obscure access to the power and
application buttons. A small hole in the back of the holster allows you to to
press the reset switch if needed. While the Visor is in the case, you can pretty
much do everything you can do when it's not in a case. You can even beam files
via a small rectangular cut out on the side of the case allows you to send and
receive files via the IR port. However, there are two potential problems with
using this case. One problem is the fact that you will not be able to sync with
the cradle while the PDA is in the case. A optional hotsync cable should work
though... The other problem is that over sized Springboard modules will cause
the PDA not to fit in the plastic holster. The Titanium Hardcase is held closed
with a very secure press fit latch. It's actually too secure if you ask me! I
had a heck of a time getting this case open. Even though there are two bumps on
the edges which are supposed to help you get a good grip on the case, my thumbs
kept slipping off when I'd try to open it. I ended up using a flat blade screw
driver to wiggle the case open. I'm guessing that with extended use that the
latch would become easier to open. For those of you that need a case that will
resist crushing, and bending, this is probably the best case there is. Just be
warned that it is heavy and does add quite a bit of bulk to your PDA. This is a
pocket friendly case unless you wear cargo pants. Price: $69.95 Pros: Ultimate
crushproof protection Unique holster attachment method Cons: Heavy Bulky Hard to
open Have to remove PDA to sync in cradle Let me know your comments on the
Rhinoskin Titanium Hardcase and read what others have to say. Back to Main Page.
InnoPocket Metal Deluxe m500 Series Case by Julie Strietelmeier Last date
revised: 01/25/2002 Product Requirements: Device: Palm m500 series So you want a
metal case for your Palm m500 series PDA huh? We've recently looked at
Rhinoskin's and Kensington's offerings and now there's another to consider: the
Metal Deluxe m500 series case from InnoPocket . This case is made of 100%
aircraft grade aluminum and is available in either a matte black or titanium
anodized finish. At only 4.67 x 3.33 x .69in (118.5 x 84.5 x 17.5mm) large and
weighing approximately 1.8oz. (45g), this case is small and light weight. I like
the feel of the finish. Being matte (non-shiny), it doesn't show fingerprints
and smudges which drive me crazy. The case feels smooth and comfortable to hold.
I could find no sharp edges or metal burrs. The interior of the case is lined
with a thin layer of Neoprene. This offers some protection in the event that you
drop the PDA while it's in the case. But don't count on it giving that much
protection... The lining on the left side of the case has cut outs for the
application and scroll buttons to minimize the potential for accidentally
activating the buttons while the case is closed. While reviewing this case, I
never had any problems with the buttons. The m500 is held in the case with a
plastic rail that is integrated into the hinge. This rail slides into the left
stylus silo. This method of attachment usually works well, but I found that the
plastic rail needed to be just a tiny bit larger in diameter. Although I never
had the PDA slide off the rail while using the case, I could make the PDA come
off by shaking it. Normal every day use shouldn't be a problem, but I'd feel
much more secure if the rail was thicker. The case is held closed with a press
fit latch that uses three dimples. This method holds the cover closed moderately
well, and I never had the case come open on its own during this review. Although
not as sturdy or crush resistant as the Rhinoskin Titanium cases, the InnoPocket
does feel sturdy even when empty. I have been putting it in my back jeans pocket
and sitting with no problems. I'm not sure I would recommend that to everyone,
but if you're not a large person, I don't think you will have a problem. While
the m500 is in this case, you have access to the stylus for easy removal, the IR
port for beaming, and even the SD card slot without needing to remove the PDA.
Syncing and charging can also be accomplished, although it is a little awkward.
If you want the absolute smallest form factor metal case for your Palm m500
series PDA, this one is it. It looks sleek, feels good in your hand, is
available for a decent price and will protect your PDA from the abuse of
everyday use. Price: $29.90 Pros: Small size Light weight Good access to the
stylus and SD slot Cons: Attachment rail could stand to be a bit larger Let me
know your comments on the InnoPocket Metal Deluxe case and read what others have
to say. Back to Main Page.
Rhinoskin Molded Aluminum Slider Case for the Palm V, m500 and m505 by Julie
Strietelmeier Last date revised: 01/04/2002 Product Requirements: Device: Palm
Vx, V, m500, m505 Isn't it crazy how time flies?! It seems like only yesterday
when I wrote my review of the Rhinoskin Titanium Cockpit case. But in fact, it
has been close to 3yrs. The Cockpit was the case that launched Rhinoskin into
the extreme PDA protection biz. It was also the grand daddy of the Slider cases
that we know today, and was the first hard case for the Palm. Next came the
Ti-Slider case , also constructed of Titanium and still available today. People
really love these cases for their obvious protective benefits. But, at the same
time, they are expensive and heavy. As a solution to these two problems,
Rhinoskin created the same case in aluminum which made it both lighter weight
and less expensive. This slider case is available in the original 'boxy' style
and now for those who might want their case to have a little more pizzazz, a
molded style. The Molded Aluminum Slider Case is made of aircraft grade aluminum
with a brushed scratch resistant finish. I like aluminum much better than
titanium due to the fact that the brushed aluminum doesn't show finger smudges
and prints like the titanium finish. Of course, titanium is much stronger and
more crush resistant than aluminum. Having said that, I find this aluminum
slider case to be very sturdy and rigid. I would have no worries about putting
it in my back pocket and sitting on it. The front and back of the case are both
molded with wide ribs that makes it look similar to Zero Halliburton attaché
cases. You might even say that the ribs allow you to keep a better grip on the
case. They also give the case that really cool industrial look. Size-wise, the
aluminum slider is identical to the titanium version. But, you can definitely
feel a difference in the weight. Here's how they compare: Size Weight Molded
Aluminum Slider 4.7 x 3.3 x 0.6 in 2.6 oz Titanium Slider 4.7 x 3.3 x 0.6 in 4.7
oz As its name implies, this is a slider case. As such, the cover opens from
right to left like a book, but then can slide completely underneath the right
half of the case. This makes it quite compact and easy to handle while using the
PDA inside it. That's really the main advantage that this case has over other
book style hard cases. I've always found the others a little awkward to hold and
use. The cover is held closed with two dimples on the bottom half of the case
that press fit into two small circular cutouts in the cover. This method feels
really secure and I don't think the case would pop open on it's own. One thing
that I have noticed is that while the cover is closed, it tends to rattle a bit.
Things like that tend to drive me nuts, but then I'm super picky. That said, I
do think this closure method is better than what Rhinoskin is using on their
molded hard cases . Instead of using a stylus rail to hold the PDA in this case,
there are thick bumpers of neoprene at the bottom of the right side shell that
you press the PDA into. I tested this case with my Palm V and m505, and both fit
fine. The neoprene is a shock absorber that helps protect your PDA if you happen
to knock it about or even drop it. I'm not really sure how much protection this
lining will give you if you drop the case from more than a couple of feet though
because it is really thin and doesn't seem to offer much padding at all. The
only other concern that I have is that the neoprene lining and bumpers (which
appear to be stuck to the case with adhesive) might peel away after repeated
insertion and removal of the PDA from the case. When the PDA is in the case, you
have access to all buttons, IR port, and right stylus silo. On the other hand,
what you don't have access to is: Palm V/Vx - Contrast button, hotsync port,
left silo, and reset switch Palm m500,m505 - SD card slot, hotsync port, left
silo, and reset switch (top view) (bottom view) (hinge view) (closure view)
Overall, the Molded Aluminum Slider is a nice case. It combines good looks with
ease of use, and offers good protection. If you can't afford a titanium slider,
check out this case at half the price. It might just be the one for you. Price:
$49.95 Pros: Good looks Cover slides under case for small footprint Cons: Have
to remove PDA to sync with cradle or cable Cover rattles when closed Let me know
your comments on the Rhinoskin Aluminum Slider case and read what others have to
say. Back to Main Page.
Rhinoskin Hardcases for the Palm m500/505 by Julie Strietelmeier and Judie Clark
Last date revised: 11/26/2001 Product Requirements: Device: Palm m500/505 Anyone
that has been around PDAs for any amount of time has most likely heard of the
titanium hard cases made by Rhinoskin . Beginning with the titanium book-style
case that Rhinoskin offered for the original Palm Pilot , and evolving into the
Ti - slider style that appeared when the Palm III first came out, Rhinoskin has
continued to add innovative ruggedized solutions to their line of cases. In
recent years, Rhinoskin has also made several styles using aluminum for those
that wanted the protection of metal, without all of the weight of titanium. Palm
V owners have enjoyed special treatment from Rhinoskin. Not only did they get a
choice of aluminum or titanium for their cases, they were also offered a choice
of fitted or slider styles. In this review, Julie and I want to show you the
next generation of Rhinoskin offerings for the next generation of the Palm V/Vx
- the m500 and the m505. Aluminum Hardcase for the Palm m500 and m505 by Judie
Clark I have been a fan of the Rhinoskin line of hard cases for years - almost
every Palm that ever accompanied me to the ranch I work at came along inside a
Rhinoskin Ti - slider. It seemed almost a crime to hide my Palm m505's gorgeous
curves in a square block of metal, and I am quite pleased that with the fitted
Aluminum Hardcase, I don't have to. This case's beauty lies in its smooth
industrial design. The Rhinoskin case is subtly decorated by the deep grooves on
its front and back, and by the two-toned hinge in its left side. The raised
Rhinoskin logo on the front is this case's only decoration. Opening the
Rhinoskin, you will find that your Palm is to be held in place with a thin metal
rail that inserts into the left silo. Thus, there is no need for Velcro or
tension between the Palm and the case's lining to keep your PDA inserted
properly. Both the front and back sides of the Hardcase are lined in thin,
shock-absorbing neoprene. There are identical cutouts in both sides of the
neoprene to accommodate the up/down scrollbar on the front of the Palm. Why both
sides? Well, because if you are left-handed you might want to install the Palm
so that the side-rail is inserted on the right side. Since this case opens
book-style, this might make it a bit easier for you "lefties" to enjoy the case.
There is a catch, though... Even though the Rhinoskin comes with plastic inserts
so that you can install the case using the rail in the larger right silo, there
is no stylus that I am aware of that will fit the smaller left silo. You will be
forced to use another type stylus entirely, such as a multi-pen that you would
carry in your pocket. This is certainly not a design flaw of the Rhinoskin case,
the fault rests entirely with Palm. You can also use the included plastic rail
inserts for retrofitting an older Palm V/Vx into this aluminum case. So, if you
have been holding back on purchasing this type of protective metal case, it is
good to know that Rhinoskin saw fit to keep this model backwards compatible. The
measurements of the Aluminum Hardcase are 4.8" (12.2cm) tall x 3.5" (9cm) wide x
0.8" (2cm) thick. With a Palm m505 inserted, the total weight is 7.7 ounces
(220g). Even though the Rhinoskin Hardcase does add extra bulk, the package
still remains easily pocketable. When the Rhinoskin case is opened, you have
easy access to the stylus, the infrared port, and the on/off button. I won't say
that this case could stop a bullet or keep a car from squishing your PDA should
you drop it under a tire, but I do think that for just about any other extreme
you and your PDA might encounter during the course of the day - you will be
covered. I believe that This case is extraordinary. If you are a person that
likes to get outdoors and bring your Palm along, or if you work in a harsh

Palm a bit bulkier Cannot sync easily with the cradle while the PDA is in the
case Titanium Hardcase for the Palm m500 and m505 by Julie Strietelmeier When
people think about the ultimate PDA case, the first thing that automatically
comes to mind (at least to me) is the almost legendary Rhinoskin Titanium cases.
Rhinoskin has had several titanium cases for Palm III series, and Palm V series
PDAs. Now they have a brand new molded titanium case specifically for the Palm
m500 series PDA. The Palm m500/m505 Molded Titanium Hardcase is a crush
resistant, scratch resistant, neoprene lined case made of 100% grade 1 titanium.
This bad boy is definitely built to last and to protect your PDA. Titanium is a
metal that is lighter and harder than stainless steel and unfortunately, about
three times as expensive. This hardcase looks almost identical to the Aluminum
Molded Palm V case that I reviewed a year ago. But instead of having a satiny
silver color, it has the grayish golden color associated with the metal
titanium. It is also a little heftier than the aluminum case. I found this
hardcase to be very solid. It didn't flex at all when I would squeeze or twist
it. It has a clamshell design that opens and closes like a book. The two halves
of the case are lined with a black neoprene material that protects the PDA from
scratches as well as providing a bit of cushion. Both sides of the case have a
cutout in the neoprene that lines up with the Up / Down scroll buttons. The
cutout helps prevent any type of accidental activation while the case is closed.
You might ask why there is a cutout on both sides of the case instead of just
the left side. It is there because you can attach the PDA by either the left or
right side depending on preference. This is a nice benefit for other southpaws
like myself. Besides the cutouts for the Up/Down buttons, there is a cutout for
the IR port and a cutout to allow you access to your stylus. The PDA attaches to
the case with a rail that is built into the hinge. The rail is also made of
titanium and is fashioned to fit into the left stylus silo on the PDA. It fits
securely and will not detach of its own accord. For those of you that want to
attach the PDA by the right silo which is larger, Rhinoskin has included two
plastic sleeves which fit over each end of the rail to increase its size. These
sleeves also make the case compatible with the Palm V/Vx PDAs. Although these
sleeves are easy to slide on and off the rail, I found that the resulting rail
needed to be just a little bit larger for the Palm V. It would not stay securely
on the rail. It worked fine with the m505 though. The case is held closed with a
press fit latch. Although the case stays closed fine, I would feel more secure
if there were some type of locking mechanism to make doubly sure that it
couldn't come open during a fall. The Titanium Hardcase is plain except for the
small Rhinoskin logo which is embossed on the front. It has a cool industrial
look to it that I really like. The whole case is molded to the contours of the
m500 which keeps it as small as possible while still providing protection. That
said, the case does add some bulk and weight to your PDA. The size is: 4.81 x
3.54 x 0.89in (122.2 x 90 x 22.6mm) and weight is 8.6oz (243.8g) with an m505
inside. Upon close inspection, I found this case to be very well made. The
finish is attractive, the edges are smooth and not sharp like some previous
versions and the hinge opens and closes without sticking or squeaking. Although
this case is pretty expensive, if you need the most crushproof case available,
this is the one you definitely want to check out! Price: $99.95 Pros: Excellent
overall protection PDA can be attached by either rail for lefties Cons:
Expensive Doesn't have a secure lock to keep cover closed Let us know your

Rhinoskin Palm V Molded Hardcase by Julie Strietelmeier Last date revised:
02/02/2000 The same folks that have brought you the famous indestructible
Titanium Slider cases have a new hardcase for the Palm V series of PDAs. The
Palm V Molded Hardcase by Rhinoskin is a case made of 100% Aircraft-Grade
brushed Aluminum. I was anxious to get this case and review it as I have been
wanting a small form factor hard shell case to use with my Palm V. I like
Rhinoskin's Titanium Slider cases, but they are just too heavy and bulky for my
personal tastes. When I first took the new Molded case out of the box, I was
surprised because it wasn't the color that I was expecting. The pictures on
Rhinoskin's website made the case look the same color as a Palm V... kind of
goldish. The case I was sent, is a bright silver color. I'm not disappointed in
the color, I was just surprised. The Aluminum is brushed which helps it to not
show fingerprints or smudges. When I first got the case, all I wanted to do was
run my fingers over it. It's a great smooth, cool feeling case. After doing this
a few minutes though, I noticed that my fingers tips were turning black. I guess
Aluminum can tarnish. After using this case for a week I've not noticed this
happening again though. One thing I did notice is that the case scratches very
easily. I was very careful with this case and only put it in my empty jeans
pocket and empty coat pocket. Somehow after only 5 days I have quite a few
scratches, scuffs and tiny pock marks. The instructions that came with the case
say that you can use a Scotch Brite scrub pad to buff out the scratches, but I
haven't tried this yet. The Palm V is held in the case with a rail that fits in
the left stylus silo. This rail has a nice tight fit so you won't have to worry
about the Palm V sliding off it. The rail is also attached to the case hinge so
that the PDA can swivel to the left or right side of the case. When the PDA is
in the case, all buttons are easily accessible. The IR port and right stylus
silo are both accessible as well. The case also works fine with the PDA Panache
Deluxe Stylus for the Palm V. You can even sync in the cradle while the PDA is
in this case, but it isn't really easy. You have to pull the front and back of
the case away from the PDA so that you can put it in the cradle. The case is
molded and has smooth sides unlike their Slider cases which are bent and have
square edges. The case I was sent had a great fit. All the edges lined up
perfectly giving the case a very smooth feeling when closed. The case is very
light weight and doesn't had much at all to the form factor of the Palm V. Here
are the specs: Size: 4.7" x 3.3" x 0.6" Weight: approx. 2.5 oz empty, 6.8 oz
with Palm V The inside of the case has a thin layer of black knit-like material
that is glued to the inside of each half of the case. This material looks
exactly like the material that Rhinoskin uses as the covering for their
ShockSuit case... but I could be mistaken. I don't see any real benefit to this
lining as there doesn't appear to be any real padding protection. If you drop
this case there isn't going to be anything to dampen the impact. During my
review I accidentally dropped the case about 1ft onto a hard tile floor. The
impact caused the case to pop open. Luckily the case and PDA weren't damaged by
this short fall. The case is designed to be a play through case in that you just
open the case and start using the PDA. You don't remove it to use it. This works
pretty well although it took me a little while to get used to opening the case.
The case is held closed by a dimpled tab on the top shell of the case. The
bottom shell has a matching "bump" that this dimple snaps over. This holds the
case closed, but I would MUCH rather see some type of sliding latch-type closure
mechanism. I say this because it's not real easy to get the case opened. You'd
think you would just press up on the tab to slide it up and open... Well, on the
review case that I had, doing this might slice your thumb open. The edge of the
tab has almost a razor sharp edge. See below. This tab wasn't the only sharp
edge on the case. Almost every edge of the case is very sharp. I've actually cut
myself twice on it. Rhinoskin really needs to sand the edges better. To open the
case I would open it by exerting opposite pressure with my thumbs on the latch
end of the case. Unfortunately, this takes two hands. I would like to see a
sliding latch that only takes one hand to operate and maybe even pops the cover
open. Overall, I like this case because I can put my Palm V in my back jeans
pocket and not worry about sitting down and flexing the PDA. I like the looks of
the case and the fact that it doesn't add much to the overall size of my Palm V.
But for almost $80, I would like to see the sharp edges fixed, and a better
closure mechanism. Price: $79.95 Pros: Lightweight. Hardcase. Play through.
Cons: Very sharp edges. Scratches easily. not easy to sync while in the case.
Expensive. Let me know your comments on the Rhinoskin Palm V Molded Hardcase and

Piel Frama Cases Review by Judie Clark Last date revised: 03/28/2002 Product
Requirements: Device: Casio E-200, HP 560 series, and the Clie 700c series For
the longest time, I have associated a particular style of PDA case with the
products offered by Vaja, one of the premier leather PDA case makers in business
today. When another company would come along and use what was essentially the
same style as a Vaja case, meaning a custom fitting holster with a padded
protective flip lid that snapped shut, I would have an almost knee-jerk
reaction, thinking " Vaja imitation ." Well, the time has come for me to
re-think my position. Piel Frama , a company based in Spain , is manufacturing a
product that is easily of the same caliber as the classic Argentinean Vaja cases
that we have all grown accustomed to seeing. I would have to say that their
cases might have even surpassed their Vaja counterparts, in some aspects. The
three cases I am taking a look at today are essentially the same in all areas,
except the devices that they were manufactured to fit. Therefore, we'll first
focus on the construction of each case, then we can touch upon the specific
models' features. All models are available in three different color
combinations: black on black, tan on tan, and black on tan. I received a solid
black E-200 case, a solid tan Clie 700c series case, and a black on tan HP 560
series case. Other than the contrasting stitching on the front flap of the
two-toned HP 560 case, there are no decorations, labels, or other obvious
branding ploys used anywhere on these Piel Frama. What sets them apart and makes
them look like the pricey cases that they are, is the obvious meticulous care
that went into their manufacture and the sumptuous leathers they are made of.
All of the Piel Frama stitching is perfect, the cutouts are exact, and these
cases fit their respective PDAs like a glove. The leather is soft,
small-grained, and extremely dressy - more so than the "all-weather leather
look" of the classic Vaja cases. The only thing missing is a really strong
leather smell, like the Vajas are known for. Like the Vaja cases, the Piel Frama
utilizes a top-loading holster design. When the case is snapped closed, a
padded, plastic insert reinforced, flip-cover protects the PDA's screen. The
snapping tab closure system protects the otherwise exposed bottom opening for
the sync port. These cases are quite padded, both on their front and back sides,
so you will not be able to use the PDA's cradle for syncing and/or charging.
This is something that many will see as a con, so I am listing it as such,
however this is a non-issue for me personally. When the Piel Frama case is
opened, you have easy access to all of the items located on the top of the PDA,
through the top-loading slot. There are three ID or credit card slots in the
flip-lid, as well as a deep pocket behind this section. Like Vaja, Piel Frama
reinforces their custom-cut PDA holster with fabric to keep it from stretching
or distorting. The cutouts for each PDA's screen and button area are exactly
like I prefer them - completely open with no "leather bars" crossing over and
cluttering up the user area. I found that using the buttons and accessing the
screen for each PDA was effortless and non-frustrating. Piel Frama cases also
feature cutouts for all of the buttons, sliders, head-phone jacks, and jog-dials
that appear on their respective PDA's sides. For the HP, there is a circular
cutout in the flip-lid to accept a headphone jack. The bottom of each case has
cutouts for any charging or syncing ports; so if you have the correct cables you
will not need to remove your PDA to accomplish these deeds. Like I mentioned
previously in this review, the Piel Frama cases are quite padded. As such, you
can expect them to add some bulk to the size of the naked PDA, but the bulk
added is neither unwieldy nor is it ugly. Simply put, your PDA will look great
in a Piel Frama case. I believe that there is enough padding that PDAs should be
protected during short distance falls (up to four feet, or so), but I wouldn't
consider it padded enough to protect anything while playing "toss the PDA." Here
are some comparisons so you can better see the size differences I am referring
to... Height Width Thickness Weight (No styli, SD or CF cards) Naked E-200 5.15"
(13.1cm) 3.2" (8.2cm) 0.7" (1.8cm) 6.5oz (184.3g) E-200 in Piel Frama Case 5.5"

(7.8cm) 1.5" (3.8cm) 7.7oz (219g) The belt-clip on these cases opens and closes
with a pinch, and there is a plastic plunger system to release the locked
plastic "button" that is unobtrusively located on the back of the case. All
things considered, I think that the Piel Frama cases are beautiful, made
extremely well, and protective enough that even the pickiest PDA accessory hound
should be quite happy with them. Price: $60 Available in black, tan and a
combination of the two colors Pros: Extremely well designed and fabricated Very
protective and padded Belt clip "nub" is not to obtrusive Cons: Expensive Can
not sync PDA while in the case Let me know your comments on the Piel Frama
Cases, and read what others have to say. Back to Main Page.
Sena Cases Sony CLIÉ NR Series Case by Julie Strietelmeier Last date revised:
11/08/2002 Product Requirements: Device: Sony CLIÉ NR series PDAs Sony CLIÉ NR60
and 70 owners will be happy to learn that there is a new line of cases available
to them. Based in California, Sena Cases brings to market an entire line of Sony
CLIÉ specific cases. Today I'll be looking at the NR series. Made of leather and
available in four color combinations including Black/Black, Black/Red, Red/Camel
and Black/Blue, these cases are almost identical to the Vaja 731 Flip Top Case .
The Sena case does have a few differences though. Most noticeable is the
attractive two tone leather design. I really like this style. I wish there were
a few other color combinations available, but the ones that are available are
suitable for both male and female buyers. The NR is held in the case by a small
holster. The leather is snug enough to hold the PDA securely. A unique feature
of this case is in the cover. It has a large rectangular cutout with a mirror
behind it. Women can use it to check their makeup and men can use it to signal
for help if lost on a deserted island ;o) The mirror is acrylic, and can be
easily removed to either give you a larger viewing area, or to allow you to use
the slot for business cards. Actually the mirror is great for adding quite a bit
of rigidity to the cover. In addition to the ample padding, the mirror helps to
make this case quite protective. More so than the similar Vaja case. The cover
which also has 2 Memory stick slots and another business card slot, is held
closed with a snap. The back of the case has a cutout for the speaker and a hole
for reset switch access. The NR series Sena case is available in both a belt
clip and non-belt clip version for the same price. The stud for the clip version
is plastic and protrudes out the back side of the case. In my opinion, the
quality of the leather used in this case is just as fine as the leather used in
the similar Vaja case. Really, the only thing that gives me any inkling that the
Sena case is not a Vaja case, is the burnished edges. The edges on the Sena case
are shiny and almost melted in appearance. This is more apparent in the
Red/Black case with the red edges. The Vaja's edges do not look shiny at all. I
think this gives the Vaja a nicer, more professional look. Otherwise, the
manufacturing of the Sena case is fine. I could find nothing to complain about
regarding the materials, construction, and stitching. If you're looking for a
case to protect your NR and liked the looks of the Vaja case but didn't want to
pop for $50, the Sena is a quality case and great buy. It's $10 cheaper and
comes with a nifty mirror! Price: $39.99 Pros: Available in interesting colors
Mirror included Cons: Finished edges look a little gaudy Let me know your

Galanteya iPAQ Cases by Julie Strietelmeier and Judie Clark Last date revised:
07/31/2002 Just when you thought that there couldn't possibly be another Vaja
-like iPAQ case manufacturer, along comes a new line of cases from the company
Galanteya of eastern Europe. But before you say "ho hum" and press the BACK
button on your browser, read a little further. What sets this company's cases
apart from others on the market is the fact that they are available in some
unique patterns and configurations. While the majority of most iPAQ cases are
made for the iPAQ without expansion sleeve (a.k.a. naked), Galanteya's cases are
also available for the iPAQ with CF sleeve, PC Card sleeve, Dual PC Card sleeve
and even Silver Slider sleeve. Judie and I were sent 4 cases to review, read on
to see what we think... G1 3800 Series Naked Case [Julie] This is your typical
slipper style case and is available currently only in plain black finely grained
leather. The iPAQ slides into the holster portion of the case and is held there
securely with friction. The holster is lined with a soft beige suede material.
One large cutout gives access to the screen, joy pad and application buttons.
Cutouts at the bottom of the case allow access to the reset switch and serial
port. Although you can not sync or charge this case in the cradle, you can use
an optional cable easily. The screen cover portion of the case is nicely padded
and has a stiffener to protect against accidental bumps. The interior of the
cover has 2 card slots with a larger slot beneath them. An oval cutout in the
cover gives access to the earphone jack at the top of the PDA. A snap is used to
keep the cover closed. There isn't anything super special to set this particular
case apart from similar cases. It is made well with good fit and finish. The
price is the 2nd lowest that I've seen for a 3800 iPAQ case. The lowest case at
$29.00 is the Krusell case which I like a little better due to the unique belt
clips available for it. Price: $30.00 ($33.00 with belt clip) Pros: Nicely made
Low Price Cons: None G3 3100, 3600, 3700 Series CF Sleeve Case [Julie] This case
is available in several colors and textures that have yet to be seen in other
company's offerings. I was sent the Alligator Limited version which is a shiny
reddish brown faux alligator texture. Like the case above, the iPAQ slides into
the holster portion of the case and is held there securely with friction. The
holster is lined with a soft beige suede material. I found that top of the
holster slightly covered the power button at the top of the iPAQ. One large
cutout gives access to the screen, joy pad and application buttons. Cutouts at
the bottom of the case allow access to the reset switch and serial port.
Although you can not sync or charge this case in the cradle, you can use an
optional cable easily. I wanted to point out that although Galanteya's website
shows that this case is also supposed to fit the 3800 series iPAQ, it will not
work well. The screen cutout covers the two outer application buttons. The
description of the case also says that it may work with the Silver Slider. I
found that the case was much too loose with my original Silver Slider. The
screen cover portion of the case is nicely padded and has a stiffener to protect
against accidental bumps. The interior of the cover has 2 card slots with a
larger slot beneath them. A small circular cutout in the cover gives access to
the earphone jack at the top of the PDA. A snap is used to keep the cover
closed. This case is made well with good fit and finish. If you like the Vaja
look and want a bigger selection of textures, this might be the case you've been
looking for. Price: $34.00 ($37.00 with belt clip) Pros: Nicely made Low price
Cons: Top edge of holster slightly covers power button and status LED G4 3100,
3600, 3700, 3800 Series PC Sleeve Case [Judie] Like the case Julie just
reviewed, the G4 is available in a very large variety of textures. Color
selection is not so vast - you basically have the option of black or brown, or a
combination of the two - which is what I was presented with. This case is
virtually identical to the G3 case Julie reviewed, except that my sample came
with the belt-clip attachment. This system used a plastic nub and a plastic
clip. This case may say it fits the 3800 series, but I feel it is more for the
31, 36 and 3700 series. Why? Because every con I have regarding this case has to
do with typical fit issues that keep most cases from fitting the newer 3800
series iPAQs. Namely, the bottom buttons are covered by the holster, and the
leather bar that forms the top of the holster is awkwardly cut for the 3800.
Here you can see an iPAQ 3600 on the left, and an iPAQ 3800 on the right: There
is a reset hole cut in the bottom of the case, but it did not line up with
either my 3650 nor my 3835. This is the iPAQ 3650. Notice that you do have clear
access to the charging port on the iPAQ itself. This is the iPAQ 3835 There is
also a cutout for a head-phone jack, but it is so tight and narrow that it may
not be practical for those that want to keep their head-phones plugged in while
the case is closed. My head-phone jack kept popping out. Inside the flip-lid,
there are two ID or credit card slots, and since the case snaps shut (instead of
using magnets) you can safely store cards with magnetic strips in the slots. So
with that in mind, I don't recommend this case unless you have a 31, 36 or 3700
series. If you have one of those iPAQs, then this case should work very well for
you. Price: $36.00 ($39.00 with belt clip) Pros: Nicely made Low price Plethora
of texture choices to choose from Cons: Bottom buttons of the 3800 series are
covered by the lower edge of holster Top edge of holster seems too high on 3800
series Headphone jack hole is cut too tight and narrow G5 3100, 3600, 3700, 3800
Series Dual PC Sleeve Case [Judie] I had completely forgotten how freaking huge
my iPAQ was while in the standard dual PCMCIA sleeve. When I inserted it to do
this review, I was just taken aback! I am trying to remember why I was so
excited when these first came out - oh yah, it was so I could turn my iPAQ into
a cellular phone. Goodness, what was I thinking! In any case, the G5 is
definitely one of the better Dual sleeve cases I have seen. It doesn't add much
more bulk to what is already a huge package. Unlike the G4 I just reviewed, this
case does not have any issues that would prohibit one from using a 3800 series
with it. The only aesthetic problem I have with the case is that the holster
bows around the screen of the iPAQ. This case also has a cutout for a head-phone
jack, and like the G4, it was near impossible for me to keep my jack inserted.
There are also holes on the bottom of the case to allow pushing the reset button
and to run a charging cable to the dual pack, but neither holes were lined up
well enough to be useful on either my 3635 or my 3835. There was clear access to
the charging port for my 3650, however. This is the iPAQ 3650. Notice that you
do have clear access to the charging port on the iPAQ itself. This is the iPAQ
3835 Like the previous cases, this one has two ID or credit card slots inside
the flip-lid. Once again, and since the case snaps shut (instead of using
magnets) you can safely store cards with magnetic strips in the slots. If you
are not worried about being able to charge your dual PC sleeve or being able to
do resets while your iPAQ is in this case, and if the bowed holster doesn't
bother you, then you might want to check the G5 out. Price: $39.00 ($42.00 with
belt clip) Available in plain or grained black leather Pros: Low price Cons:
Holster bows out around edges of PDA's screen Headphone jack hole is cut too
tight and narrow Galanteya cases are available at Super Buy Online , and other
retailers. Let me know your comments on the Galanteya iPAQ Cases and read what

Vaja #881 Compaq iPAQ 3800 Series Case by Julie Strietelmeier Last date revised:
02/18/2002 Product Requirements: Device: Compaq iPAQ 3800 series The #881 is
another great Compaq iPAQ case from Vaja the renowned Argentine leather
crafters. This particular model is made specifically for the 3800 series iPAQ
without any expansion sleeves attached. It is available in 4 color variations
(Black Floater, Green Floater, Vitelino Chocolate, and Vitelino Azabache) and
with or without a belt clip. I was sent the Black Floater belt clip version for
review. This version has a pebbly texture on the screen cover while the rest of
the case has an almost matte finished texture. The interior of the case is lined
in a soft tan leather. The iPAQ slides securely into the holster part of this
case with no fear of it sliding out accidentally. While in the case, you have
access to the Record, Power, Application and Joy pad. Unlike their 3600 series
cases, this case has a leather bar that separates the button area from the
screen. This is the only part of the case that I wish were different. I think it
is possible that this bar could be removed and as such, the top two application
buttons (Contacts and Mail) would feel less restricted. Although the bottom of
the case is open, the #881 is not a sync-able case. It almost works, but not
quite. I could get the port on the PDA and the cradle to make contact long
enough for ActiveSync on my PC to launch. But the contact wasn't good enough for
it work consistently. I should also point out that the leather around the serial
port almost covers the reset hole which makes it difficult to activate. The
screen cover has 2 regular sized card slots with a larger slot behind them. The
cover is reinforced with an ABS plastic insert that keeps the cover rigid to
protect against the usual abuse that we inflict on our PDA in an average day.
The cover is held closed with a snap. I found that the leather strip with the
snap seemed to be slightly too long causing the cover to wobble back and forth
just a little more than necessary. The belt clip version of this case has a
metal stud that sticks out of the back side of the case. This stud is larger
than the ones previously used on Vaja cases. It is also keyed so that the clip
can only fit on it when turned in a specific orientation. Like every case that
I've had the opportunity to review from Vaja, this case is made entirely of
quality leather. The craftsmanship is excellent. I could find nothing wrong in
its construction. I really like the #881 a lot and at the moment, it is the case
I use with my 3835. For a quality case that looks great and feels comfortable in
your hand, you can't go wrong with this one. Price: $42.90 - $52.90 ($46.90 -
$56.90 with belt clip) Pros: Vaja quality construction Cons: Reset hole
partially covered Can't sync or charge in cradle Main button cutout feels a
little cramped Let me know your comments on the Vaja #881 Compaq iPAQ 3800

Rhinoskin Compaq iPAQ Leather Flip-Case by Julie Strietelmeier Last date
revised: 08/18/2001 Product Requirements: Device: Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC My
favorite style PDA case has always been the play-through. Why? Basically because
once you've inserted your device, you don't need to remove it every time you
want to use it. Typically, the slipper style case has been the most popular of
this genre. Rhinoskin , the company that that made a name for themselves with
their titanium and aluminum series of Slider cases, have recently come out with
the Leather Flip-Case for the Compaq iPAQ which is available in black or brown.
You might think that the Flip-Case is your average "run of the mill" slipper
case, but Rhinoskin has given their customers a few extra features to make this
case more appealing than some. Let's take a detailed look... The first thing
that you'll notice about this case is that it is made of two types of leather:
regular full-grained leather and a soft, suede leather. The addition of suede
gives you a couple bonuses. One, it is attractive and two, it allows you to have
a better grip on your PDA while you're holding the closed case in your hand.
Besides having the suede on the outside screen cover, suede is also used to line
the holster portion of the case that the PDA is cradled in. The screen cover is
held closed with a strong leather covered brass snap. The inside of the cover
has one large slot. This slot is more suited for papers than business cards as
they would probably slide to the bottom and be hard to retrieve when needed. The
holster portion of the case is made of leather and has one large cut-out that
gives you access to the joy-pad and application buttons. All the buttons can be
easily pressed; the holster does not get in the way. Another cut-out at the top
allows you to access the power button. There is also access to the record button
on the left side of the PDA. The bottom of the holster has a cut-out for the AC
adapter connector and the serial port. By the way, the Flip-Case is NOT a
sync-able case. You'll need to remove your iPAQ in order to sync and charge. You
can however sync with an optional cable and charge by plugging the AC power cord
directly into the bottom of the PDA. There are two things about this case that I
don't like. The first is that you can't use this case with a naked iPAQ. The
holster is just too large. The packaging for the case and the website
description do not reflect this. However, if you use the basic style pack that
came with your iPAQ, it will fit just fine. Some people might like this because
the addition of the style pack will give the iPAQ even more protection. I, on
the other hand, like to keep things as small as possible - so I feel that adding
the sleeve just adds more bulk and weight. Without Basic Sleeve With Basic
Sleeve ( Note : The Flip-Case works great with the original Silver Slider and
the Whitney CF BackPack mod) The second thing that I don't like about the
Flip-Case is that there isn't a cut-out for the reset switch. This is only a
small gripe because I could probably easily punch a hole for the reset switch
myself. But, I really think that I should not be expected to do that.... The
back of the case has a slot for a belt-clip post. This is one of the first cases
that I've seen with a removable post which I think is pretty nifty! The post is
plastic and slides into a slot on the back. This post could stand to be just a
little bit larger though, because it tends to slide side-to-side a bit. The
belt-clip is a plastic squeeze type with a one touch release on the top. It can
accommodate a belt as wide as 1.5", or you can simply clip it on your waist
band. To attach the PDA to your belt-clip, you have to slide the post into the
clip at a 90 degree angle and snap it down. Then you can just let it swivel as
needed. To remove it from the clip: you have to rotate the case 90 degrees,
press the release button at the top of the clip and pull up. Both procedures are
simple to do. Overall the Flip-Case is an economical way to carry the iPAQ. It
looks nice and gives you the option of making it a belt case should you desire.
