Palm.Net was the most aggressive program to bring wireless connectivity to PDAs, long before things like Bluetooth connection to mobile phones were available. Without the wireless ability, the palmOne VII and i705 are essentially reduced to just being old PDAs. This month GIs and other military personnel in Iraq will start using PDAs to collect intelligence data in a real-time fashion. To gussy up the name PDA, they're being called Commander's Digital Assistants (CDA) though. This is all part of the U.S. attempt to develop it's "Future Soldier" for the digitized battle-fields of tomorrow. The burning question however, is the CDA they're using Palm OS, Microsoft OS or Linux? I recognize a small bribe when I see it and I was immediately suspicious of the product I was about to review. That, plus the fact that I'm a "glass is half – empty" kinda guy and I was really looking forward to munching on Whoppers whilst ripping apart yet another PDA accessory maker wannabe. But let's just say that the Whoppers were tasty and the product is even better – Proporta has a real winner here. Cons A little bulky Full Review I purchased the flip case because unlike the slim case, you don't have to glue velcro to your Palm Pilot in order to keep it in place. I owned one of the original Palm II units and a leather case that held the Pilot in with velcro. I always had a problem keeping my Palm in the case that way because after a while the glue on the velcro strip kept coming loose from the pilot. I ended up getting a "pocket style" case. I like the fact that the Palm m100 Leather Flip case's pocket style protects the Palm Pilot on all sides (I keep the Pilot in my purse amongst a lot of other things). Its design allows you to press all buttons and hot sync easily. I am very happy with the Palm m100 Leather Flip Case. Recommended Yes Comments on this Review Write the first comment on this review! Very strong. And very cool looking. That's why Rhinoskin made its Original Titanium Hardcase several years ago to "protect your handheld investment" (that's Rhinoskin's slogan). The original case's extreme protection came at a price, though: it was big and a little unwieldy. But its appeal was undeniable and it got great ratings in an earlier UGeek review ( read the January 1998 review ). Rhinoskin's new version of the Titanium Hardcase is called the Ti (for Titanium) Slider, and it boasts some nice improvements without sacrificing the look and incredible strength of its predecessor. The case itself is slightly smaller than the original (1/10 of an inch less deep and 3/10 of an inch less wide), has a cut-out for the IR port, and has a very nice sliding cover that can "fold" directly behind your Palm/Pilot and thus take up no extra room. It's got neoprene on the outermost inner corners of the cover and a solid coating on all sides of the base (with a section cutout for storing business/credit cards). The neoprene gives the case shock absorption capability and protects the Palm/Pilot while "snugging" it in. Like its fellow Rhinoskin product the Shock Suit ( see our review ), the Ti Slider boasts a lot of features that show how much thought Rhinoskin's designers put into these cases. For example, the neoprene cutout in the base is designed to hold business or credit cards; that's a great idea in itself, but the Ti Slider goes one better by leaving out an additional half-moon of neoprene at the top of the card area so that your finger can easily lift the cards out of the bottom. Another example of designing with the user in mind is the little cutout in the side of the titanium so that your thumb has something to hold onto when sliding the cover open or closed. All this is is a slight twisting of the small lip outwards, but it makes a tremendous difference and the case is much easier to open and close because of it. The Ti Slider's designers also allow you to adjust the friction of the hinge to your taste and show you how to do so with a nicely illustrated and well-written instruction sheet. I was also impressed by the fact that the IR port is unobstructed whether the case is open or closed. Getting the Palm/Pilot in and out of the case is very easy, though you have to do it correctly or you can damage the neoprene on the top and bottom of the base. UPDATE 1/25/2000: Rick Bryant wrote to tell me that he was hesitant about purchasing the Ti Slider for fear that the neoprene would wear away. He contacted Rhinoskin, however, and got the following information: "I just ordered the case, after finding out from a Rhinoskin rep that they will send out neoprene replacements free of charge. The pieces have 'sticker'-like adhesive; just pull the backing off and put in place. Just e-mail them and they will send them out." Thanks, Rick! My PalmPilot Pro and Palm III fit very nicely into the Ti Slider and I was never worried about something happening to it. The titanium not only looks cool, it's also surprisingly durable. I remember looking at the "thinness" of the metal sides when I first started using the case and wondering how it could possibly protect my Palm/Pilot from a severe collision--you almost worry more about a collision marring the sleek look of the Ti Slider than about it damaging your Palm/Pilot. Then I played with the "weak-looking" parts and was amazed at how strong the case is. Nice-looking rivets in strategic places keep the corners even tighter together and lend a sleek look to the case. The slider functions perfectly and you can even slide it under the base as much or as little as you want and the case will still be balanced nicely. This was important because if you slide the cover all the way under the base you can't get your stylus out; by leaving the cover slightly out from under the base you can get your stylus and not worry about tipping the case and Palm/Pilot. This is a very strong and very good looking case. All my coworkers who saw it were impressed by the look and then even more impressed when I told them it was made of titanium. One of my more overzealous colleagues decided to drop the Ti Slider from about 4 feet in the air with my PalmPilot Pro in it. While I wasn't overly amused by his unscheduled gravity test with my handheld, the Ti Slider performed perfectly and the PalmPilot hadn't even budged a bit. The included !Point Stylus is also a very nice bonus. It looks great and complements the finish of the case. It even unscrews to reveal a little reset pin. I was disappointed by a few things, however. First off was the fact that the Palm/Pilot must be removed from the Ti Slider for syncing. I realize that the integrity of an extremely strong case is compromised by having a large hole in it, but not being able to sync while the Palm/Pilot is in the Ti Slider makes the case more of a transport device than a constant protector--plus, taking the Palm/Pilot in and out too often will wear down the neoprene if you're not careful. I also wasn't happy with the corners of the Ti Slider because I was afraid that they might rip my pockets when I had the case in my pants. Don't get me wrong--the corners of the unit aren't sharp. They're not 100% smooth, though, and I could feel them tugging a bit on my pocket when I was moving the case in and out (the Chief Geek shared my apprehension when he was using the Ti Slider). This isn't that big a deal and the fear of ripping would probably go away with time and use, but it does point out the fact that the Ti Slider doesn't come with a belt clip. You can get Rhinoskin's ClipPak accessory for $12 less than the normal price when you buy it with the Ti Slider, but it's not as durable or anywhere near as cool-looking as the Ti Slider, which is kind of a bummer. ClipPak Accessory Can't click these actually, because they are actual size from Rhinoskin's website. The first picture shows the front of the case in Hunter Green (the color is no longer available). The second pic shows the clip. Please don't let the last paragraph fool you: I was very impressed with the Ti Slider and everyone who saw me using it was also taken by its looks, strength, and functionality. I think my disappointments may have been accentuated by the fact that I was using Rhinoskin's Shock Suit at the same time and the two cases offer different advantages. The Ti Slider offers you great looks and incredible strength but isn't as easy to carry and use at the same time for as many functions. The Shock Suit offers you protection and amazing usability but isn't the prettiest thing in the world. Since I've never had the misfortune of damaging my Palm/Pilots, the superior protection of the Ti Slider wasn't as compelling to me as it is to others, and my captivation with the Shock Suit may have colored my feelings towards the Ti Slider. This pic is here to sh ow off the nice thumb catch I raved about earlier so you don't think I'm just bashing on the Ti Slider without remorse That said, let me reiterate that the Ti Slider is a great case for your Palm/Pilot. When UGeek reviewed the original Titanium Hardcase in January of '98 our reviewer actually stood on it and didn't damage his PalmPilot. While I didn't really want to stand on a product loaned to me for review, I'm pretty sure I could have stood on it and gotten away with an intact Palm/Pilot . . . and that's no mean feat! Ratings Defense Rhinoskin's Ti Slider Hardcase gets 4 Geekheads for Quality. It looks great, works great, offers incredible protection in a small package, and comes with a very nice stylus for free. I subtracted a Geekhead for the not fully-smooth corners and for the fact that you have to take your Palm/Pilot out to hotsync it. Again, this isn't that big a deal, but in my view it made the Ti Slider less than a 100% solution since a major feature of the Palm/Pilot must occur outside of the case's protection. The Ti Slider also gets 4 Geekheads for Geekness. Major major points for being a great-looking case made of titanium, a very geeky metal. You can customize the slider's friction and can slide the cover back to a variety of positions without compromising balance. The attention to detail, a Rhinoskin hallmark, was also very very impressive (I'm still marveling over the little things Rhinoskin does with the Ti Slider to make it easy for your fingers to open the cover and remove cards). But I have to fault the designers a little bit for not figuring out some way to allow the Palm/Pilot to be hotsynced within the case. I was also suprised that when the cover is placed fully behind the base you can't get the stylus out. And the fact that the case doesn't come with a belt clip means you have to carry it in a pocket or bag if you don't buy the ClipPak accessory, and a true Geek always wants the world to see her or his PDA proudly on display. At $99.95, the Ti Slider may seem expensive, but it's definitely worth it if you're looking for the ultimate in strength and looks. Titanium is not a cheap metal and there's a reason: it lasts and is really strong. The Ti Slider would definitely make an impressive holiday gift for a Palm/Pilot user and can be used without fear whether you're easy on your PDA or take it with you on all your daredevil activities (see the PDA Horrors section for stories that include mountain-climbing and roller-coaster-ing Palms). Plus you get a very cool stylus for free and the belt clip bundle is also a nice deal. Bumper Case Review Concept Kitchen's Bumper Case for Palm Protect your Palm! I've had my bright yellow Bumper for two weeks now and I'm still hoping I'll drop my Palm - no really! When I first opened the box it was sent in I read all of the printed material on the packaging, it said the Bumper was: "The Fumble, Drop and Spill resistant Case" And with just one look, I knew this was no ordinary case - this was serious protection for my treasured Palm, you know the one I've always been extra careful with, but now I can hardly wait to drop it! No I'm not mad but this case does give you the feeling that it can "take it". So I've been looking for a "real life" story I could tell you about. A story about how my Bumper protected Palm fell from incredible heights and bounced back unscathed form it's traumatic event. But alas it won't fall. I even gone as far a thinking, just thinking mind you, about dropping it "accidentally" , so I could tell you this amazing story about it's survival. But then it occurred to me what the real story here is. Peace of mind. I no longer worry about dropping my treasured Palm. The Concept Kitchen went to great lengthens to give me this peace of mind. They contracted the leading design company, Bridge Design, to design the Bumper. Bridge developed the Bumper, for the Palm Organizers for the Concept Kitchen. Official Gadgeteer Hands On Review: Armor Metal Palm Case by Julie Strietelmeier Last date revised: 02/19/99 The Pilot Armor case by Okmik Productions is an all aluminum case for the PalmPilot or Palm III. This is a new version of their first case which was called the Angel case. The Armor case comes in several brilliant anodized colors including black, red, blue, green, violet, orange, brown, yellow and clear (silver). I received the blue Armor case to review. armor2.jpg (6637 bytes) armor1.jpg (3867 bytes) Okmik Productions' first case: The Angel was just for the PalmPilot. This new version will accommodate both the PalmPilot or the Palm III. There are cutouts for the stylus, contrast wheel, hotsync port, power button and application buttons. Accessing the buttons while a Palm III is in the case is somewhat harder than using it with a PalmPilot. The Palm III's button area is more curved than flat like the PalmPilot. Because of this it is difficult to use your finger to turn the Palm III on while it's in this case. You can of course use your stylus to press the power button though. Pressing the application buttons is equally easy with either a Palm III or PalmPilot. Using the scroll buttons is a little easier on a PalmPilot. Pressing the down scroll button on a Palm III is harder because your finger can get caught on the sharp edges of the button cutout area. I may have received a case that accidentally didn't get all the edges sanded down. The only sharp edges I found on the case were in the button cutout area. The worst was the points of the button cutout area right under the down scroll button. armor3.jpg (10228 bytes) armor6.jpg (8300 bytes) armor4.jpg (5405 bytes) The opening for the stylus is just bit too short for a Palm III but fine for a PalmPilot. With a PalmPilot you can still use the pad of your thumb to eject the stylus from the holder. But with a Palm III, you have to use your fingernail to pick at the ridges in the stylus. The stylus can only be easily extracted when the Armor case is partially open. When the case is closed, the case lid covers the opening... and when the case is fully open, the lid covers it as well. You just have to remember to remove the stylus as you're opening the case. This isn't a really big deal, but during my review of this case, I continually would forget and have to pull the case forward so that I could get to the stylus. Speaking of styli, This case will not work with E&B's Point! stylus. The knob top of the stylus extends too high and doesn't allow the case to close. armor5.jpg (7152 bytes) The opening for the HotSync port is just the right size for a hotsync cable or The Bridge . Syncing with a cable requires you to have the Armor cover open but not collapsed all the way (see picture at the left). This can be slightly awkward. Syncing the case with The Bridge is much easier, but you have to sync blindly as the case will be closed (see picture below). This really isn't a big deal if you have the system sound turned on as the 'dee-da-lee-dee' tone will let you know when the sync is complete. Inserting and removing the PalmPilot or Palm III from the Armor case is easy. It's just a matter of sliding it into the case and pressing the scroll buttons down when they butt up against the edge of the button cutout area. Removing it just requires you to press up on the Pilot from the hotsync cutout and press the scroll buttons down to slide them under the metal part of the button cutout area. Opening and closing the case is not the easiest. The Armor case has a metal dimple that lets you snap the case shut. Because of this dimple, it makes the case difficult to open. To open it, you have to get your fingers between the top cover and back part of the case and then pry it apart. The cover then can be swung open and under the case. If you open the case completely, the dimple will again snap into place making it hard to slide the cover back into a closed position. The design of the Armor case is neat but the addition of this metal dimple makes it harder to use than the original Angel case. The colored finish on the Armor case is great. It's has a really smooth, cool feel to it. The metal feels sturdy around the PDA. Although this case isn't designed to protect the PDA from drops, it is perfectly strong enough to allow you to put the Pilot in your back pocket of your pants and sit down. When the case is closed, it can't be flexed or twisted. This case is the lightest of all the metal cases available. It's also adds the least to the over all size of the Pilot. A small brass name plate comes with the Armor case. It's engraved with "PILOT ARMOR" on it. You can attach it to the case if you wish, or you can order a personalized plate with your name on it for an extra charge. The Pilot Armor case is an eye catching case with its bright colors. It protects the whole PalmPilot or Palm III from scratches or bumps. If you're looking for a metal case, you should really consider this one. Price: $62.95 (Black), $70.10 (Other colors) - These are PalmPilotGear H.Q. prices. Pros: When closed, case almost totally encloses the Pilot. Sturdy. Light weight. Cons: Hard to open the case. Can't use the Point! stylus with this case. Button cutout area is sharp. Hotsyncing requires you to either remove it, use a cable or The Bridge. Let me know your comments on the Armor case. Web Reviews Review By Fredlet: "I currently have a fetish for anything leopard skin... and not only did this take care of my craving for everything leopard, it also is a kick ass case! I usually don't like zippered cases, but I honestly can't say that it has bugged me in the least that there is a zip around closure on this little guy. It has a clear plastic window on a rather sizeable pocket as well as a cash pocket, several other pockets and what seems to be a stylus well, though the way I have my IIIx in there, its upside down. It does have a velcro attachment, but I could see how you could live without the velcro... I have used this as a replacement for my wallet lately. Though it wouldn't be the perfect solution in the long run (no coin storage, needs more credit card slots, etc. Its great for just the basics when you want to travel lightly. Run right out and get one of these swank little critters. Official Gadgeteer Hands On Review: Incipio Carrying Cases for the Visor and Palm PDAs by Don Damiani Last date revised: 08/13/2000 In the words of the guys from Monty Python, " And now for something completely different! " Different in the world of PDA carrying cases, that is. Just take a look at these flashy zipper cases by IncipioTechnologies . If you think that the standard black leather or rugged khaki nylon styles are not for you, perhaps one of these cases will catch your interest. The Incipio cases are basically designed to fit Palm and Handspring PDAs, but other PDAs might fit in them. (They say on their web site the cases also fit VTech Helio and the Royal daVinci.) They are all about the same size, 5½" x 4½" x 1", and they all have some similarities. But the Visor cases differ from the "generic" cases in that they have a flap on the right side that you can use to secure the Visor. This flap holds the Visor plastic cover, and then you attach the Visor to it. It works as they have designed it, but I don't have great confidence that this is a very secure method of holding the Visor. And you would then have to flip the Visor around to protect the screen when you close the case. (Also, remember the chat about the weak cover catch on the Visor that tended to crack). The "non-Visor" cases have a large strip of Velcro for securing the PDA in the place where the cover flap is on the Visor cases. Anyone reading Gadgeteer reviews will know what we think of putting Velcro on a PDA, but that aside, if you are looking for a wild wallet style zipper case, these are nice cases, so you may not mind a little Velcro. I really didn't want to do another case review where I showed every single case style available, but I thought that it was important here because they have so many different styles, and materials. Check them out below. Blue Hawaii Leopard Zebra Giraffe Midnight Armadillo Bubble-Retro- (Available in Green and Black) 100% Carbon Fiber Ballistic Nylon- (Available in Yellow Blue or Black) Vulcanized Rubber- (Available in Red, Blue, Black, and Gray) Mountaineering Grade Nylon- (Available in Red, Yellow, and Black) These are all well made cases, with strong zippers. All of the ones that I reviewed were a bit stiff, which is a good thing if you want protection. (There is some kind of plastic insert inside of the case to make it stiff.) I don't think that you would have any problems if you dropped your PDA while it was zipped up in one of these cases. They are all about 2 oz. in weight, which is very light. As far as I can tell, all of them are water resistant. The cases also have a removable safety strap (or cord), many pockets, and an area for currency. They all carry a limited lifetime warranty. All of the material styles shown above are available for both Handspring and Palm PDAs. They range in price from $24.95 to $54.95. Wallet style cases are not my favorite, as a computer geek, I mean "technology enthusiast", I prefer the belt clip styles. But these cases offer plenty of options to the PDA user that is looking for something different. If you bought your Ice Visor DX as an attention grabber, you just may be a candidate for the Zebra Incipio case! Price: $24.95 to $54.95 Pros: Creative attractive designs. Quality construction. Protects the PDA. Con: Method of securing the Visor not preferable, but maybe better than Velcro.

Official Gadgeteer Hands On Review: Palm Organizers by Jeff Carlson Book Review by Judie Clark Last date revised: 01/04/2001 Palm Organizers , a book by Jeff Carlson, proclaims right on the front cover that with it, you can " Teach yourself how to use Palm OS-based devices the quick and easy way! " Does it do this? As we say here in West Texas, "You Betcha!" Not only is Palm Organizers easy to read, it actually does cover just about every Palm OS device out there. Times being as they are - a few new models have come out since this book was published in 2000; however, this book does contain information that pertains to every model available that uses the Palm OS. This book begins with a hilarious excerpt from an interview between Microsoft CEO and Chairman, Bill Gates and Charlie Rose on the "Charlie Rose" TV show (March 4, 1998). If you never have a chance to read Palm Organizers - this will at least give you a sense of the humor that this book was written with: Bill Gates : "The future of the PC is to be a tablet-sized device or perhaps larger than a tablet....But then you also have a lot of other devices, things like - I think I've got one in my pocket." Charlie Rose : "A Pilot in his Pocket." Bill Gates : "No, no, no, no. This is the competitor to the Pilot. Don't say "Pilot." Geez. This is the - " Charlie Rose : "Does that look like a Pilot? I rest my case." I had to laugh! It's true, whatever you want to call them - be it "Pilots", "Palm Pilots", or "Palms", the little gray box that Jeff Hawkins made has completely permeated our society to the point where "Palm" or "Pilot" is almost a generic term! But what if you are late getting on this "technology-bus"? What if you have just made the purchase of a brand new Palm, and you haven't got a clue about where to begin? I believe that this book will not only help you get started, I think there are also some things in here that people who have been using the Palm OS for a while will still find quite useful. Written by a man who purchased his first Palm Pilot in 1997, Jeff Carlson has a real grasp of some of the issues that face a new Palm user. As a current Palm user, he also offers up some of the "tips and tricks" that he personally finds useful in integrating the Palm with his day-to-day life. Beginning with detailed descriptions of each of the available (at the time of printing) Palm OS models, Jeff quickly jumps into all of the basic functions of each device. From there,. he describes in detail how to do everything from changing your batteries without losing data, to the importance of protecting your screen from scratches, to what accessories are available to make your Palm do even more. I was surprised to see that TRG upgrades, Targus & Landware keyboards, and even Concept Kitchen Write-Rights, among MANY other brand names, were actually given mention in this book under accessories. I think it is refreshing to see somebody say the names of the brands that they like...I kept looking for one he didn't like, just to see if equal time was being given. :0) The subtle differences between the different versions of Palm OS available are discussed in Palm Organizers , whether it be version 1.0 vs. 3.0, or the date-book versions included with the Handspring Visor vs. the Palm III. There is a enough information available in this book to get you started, no matter which unit you are using. If you have a question - this book will most likely answer it: Do you know the four ways to activate the onscreen keyboard? Look on page 30; Having trouble figuring out how to beam from your Handspring's Date Book+? There is a reason...check out the bottom of page106; Want to rename the Address Book custom fields on your desktop and Palm? Turn to page 127; Wondering how to work Handspring's advanced calculator? There's a great overview starting on page 165. Want some info you may not have been aware of? Here's a nibble: The Find feature begins its search in the application you are currently running. Search my existing list of cases for what suits your needs! I don't have everysingle case in existence in the database yet, but I do have all the cases on my site that are currently being sold listed here with their glorious characteristics available for your perusal. I will be slowly adding the other cases find on the web even if I don't have a review of the case yet. Give me a little time, its a time consuming process. =; ) I'll also put a link to the Mfr's home page if I don't have a review to click to on the search result. From the Pilot mailing list and reviews people have sent me, I have gleaned other's reactions to all things Pilot-like and not Pilot-like, but that work with the Pilot stuff anyway. I have put the name of the item, the comments from the mail I saw or my own comments, then an image when available. Click on the image for a link to the manufacturer's home page. New! I have been combing through the web trying to find new cases (seems like there are new ones everyday) and I will be adding them to the listings soon. Also I have added a new system that tells you whether or not the case will fit with the new PIII units. I have mailed the Mfr's, and will see what they have to say on compatibility, however if someone mails me and says that it doesn't work, until the design is revved for that particular case, I will only rate it for Pilots and not PIII. (until I get the mails back from the Mfr's, assume that those that aren't rated I don't know about compatibility yet.) Here's what the new system looks like: Compatibility : Compatible with the old Pilots only Compatibility : Compatible with PIII's only Compatibility : Compatible with all PalmPilots New! Here's a QuickReference of all the cases...just the facts ma'am. Want to see something specific in the quick reference? Let me know... Want to submit a review of your own? Mail me ! Your reviews are what make this site work! I have only received one comment with out a name on it. First names only are ok, but please put a name. I hope that we can all be cool and if a review is negative make the comments constructive and try not to make this a slam-fest. *ATTN. MANUFACTURERS: If you would like a review of your case and you don't see it already on here, please contact me, Fredlet , and I will provide you with a shipping address and you can send me a sample of your case. After using it for a week or so, I will review it and place it on this page. Sorry, I will not be able to return sample cases. Disclaimer: Always wear your seat belt. None of the opinions are advertisements for these bags, merely a personal statement of what worked and what didn't work for these people. Don't run with scissors. The names have been truncated, no links are available to mail these people...although you'll probably recognize some of the names from your travels in Pilot space.
