There are even more features, and it has excellent online help . Compatible with the iPAQ 5550 and Pocket PC 2003. HP iPAQ 4155 Pocket PC 2003 with 400 MHz XScale Processor —by Lisa Gade , Editor in Chief, posted Nov. 25th, 2003 HP has been hitting home runs this year with their latest iPAQ Pocket PCs. The iPAQ 5555 , 1945 and particularly the 2215 have been great models that have been well received by reviewers and shoppers alike. The 4150, much anticipated since rumors of it surfaced several months ago, should also be a hot unit. Why? It's just a hair larger than the iPAQ 1945 which is the smallest Pocket PC, yet it offers both built-in Bluetooth and WiFi and has no external antennas. In short, it's absolutely sweet! Note that in the HP tradition, the iPAQ 4150 and 4155 are the same unit, the final digit indicates whether it was sold via consumer or business channels. We have the 4155, so will use that model number in our review. Note that the iPAQ 4350 is a 4150 with an integrated thumb keyboard and larger battery, and that unit is 1 inch longer to accomodate the thumboard. iPAQ 4155 iPAQ 4155 back Design and Ergonomics It's surprisingly small, it's curvy, modern, attractive and light at 4.67 ounces. Think Palm V sized, or the iPAQ 1910 and 1940, if you've seen those in person. Unlike most other Pocket PCs with integrated WiFi, the 4155 doesn't have an external antenna, making for a cleaner and more compact design. Don't worry, WiFi signal strength is top notch even without the antenna. The casing is made of plastic, and the front face has a silver finish. The back of the case is gray plastic, and while it doesn't give the iPAQ a touch of class, it should at least not show fingerprints. The user replaceable battery lives behind a door on the back and you'll slide a chromed retaining latch to release the door. On the front are 2 LEDs, one of which glows green to indicate that the WiFi radio is on, and blue to indicate that the Bluetooth radio is on. If both Bluetooth and WiFi are turned on, the LED will alternate between blue and green. The other LED indicates charging status and reminders in amber. The record button is located on the upper left side and is well designed to avoid accidental button presses. The 5-way square d-pad works well and smoothly in all directions, but the four application buttons are small and a bit slippery thanks to their chrome finish and will likely not thrill gamers. Oddly, the IR port is located on the bottom right corner which means you'll be looking at the screen upside down when beaming, and most IR keyboards won't work. HP designed a new cradle for the iPAQ 4000 series and it's pictured on the right below. It's a relatively large and blocky looking cradle, and the iPAQ stands upright leaving a good deal of space behind it. Why the space? To make it easier to get to spare batteries that are being charged in the rear section of the cradle even when your iPAQ is cradled. This is the first HP cradle to feature a removable standard USB cable. iPAQ 4000 series cradle Above: the iPAQ 4000 series cradle. The inset on the back plane is for charging a spare battery. size comparison Above: Size comparison. Left to right: Dell Axim X3i , iPAQ 4155 and the Sony Clié UX50 . Deals and Shopping! Shop at Amazon.com Questions? Comments? Post them in our Discussion Forum! Read our Windows Mobile 2003 Comparison Horsepower and Features The 4155 has an Intel XScale PXA255 processor running at 400 MHz. This is the current top of the line processor, also used in the iPAQ 2215 and 5555, and the 4155 benchmarks similarly to those units. The 4155 has 64 megs of RAM, 55 of which are accessible to the user, and 32 megs of NAND flash ROM, 2.85 megs of which are available as a non-volatile File Store. HP has shipped the 4155 with a utility that can format the File Store area should it become corrupt or should you wish to erase its contents before selling it or giving it to someone (being non-volatile, the File Store will not be erased even after a hard reset). The iPAQ runs Pocket PC 2003 Premium Edition, which is the full featured version of the OS (compared to PPC 2003 Professional Edition). This means MS Reader, Terminal Services and Microsoft's new Images program come pre-installed in ROM. For expansion, you've got the oddly placed IR port, Bluetooth and an SD slot supporting SDIO. The 4000 series iPAQs are not compatible with iPAQ expansion sleeves for the iPAQ 3000 and 5000 series. Video playback was excellent using Pocket MVP and Pocket TV Enterprise. In fact, the 4155 outperformed our Dell Axim X3i , dropping many fewer frames for videos encoded at high rates. Screen, Sound, and Gaming Transflective displays, currently one of the best LCD display technologies have become standard on Pocket PCs, if not most all recent PDAs, and the 4155 has a 3.5" transflective display. HP makes some of the nicest, and they're always bright, color saturated and contrasty. The 4155 is no exception, having a lovely display, but if you hold the unit at an angle rather than holding it straight on, you will notice a yellow color cast. When held straight on, you won't see it at all, and it isn't as noticeable as the iPAQ 1945's off angle color cast. The sound volume is quite loud. Alarms are easy to hear, and I generally turned down the sound level to less than half when playing games. Of course if you're listening to MP3s, you'll want to use headphones that connect to the standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack rather than the speaker located under the d-pad. Like all Pocket PCs, the iPAQ 4150 has a voice recorder, and the unit includes an Audio control panel applet that allows you to adjust the microphone EQ for "Short Range Recording", "Normal" and "Conference Recording". You can also enable AGC (automatic gain control), and set the headphone volume independent of the speaker volume. The 4155 performed well playing intensive games including NES emulators, Hexacto Bounty Hunter Pinball, SIMCity 2000 and Bust 'Em 2 . Other than the application buttons, gamers should enjoy this unit. Battery Life The 4155 comes with a user replaceable 1000 MAh Lithium Ion battery. That's a decent capacity battery, and an optional extended 1800 MAh battery is available. The newly designed cradle has a slot to charge an additional battery. Like other iPAQs, you'll use the included dongle if you wish to plug the charger directly into the iPAQ rather than charging it in the cradle Battery life has been impressive so far, averaging 3.5 hours when not using wireless (brightness set one notch below highest). Even intensive games don't rapidly drain the battery. Bluetooth is always fairly battery friendly, but WiFi is not. Despite that, the iPAQ achieved about 2 hours when using WiFi. I used the iPAQ with the WiFi radio set to auto power savings, and there are also options to always use power savings ("Extended") or never use it ("Off"). These settings are found in the Power control panel applet, under the "Control" tab. WiFi The iPAQ 4155 has built-in WiFi 802.11b wireless Ethernet networking. It truly has excellent range considering that it doesn't have an external antenna. In fact it rivaled the iPAQ 5555 which also has excellent range. Using Cirond's Pocket WiNc, I was able to sniff out 11 WiFi access points in my home area (it's Silicon Valley, after all). The wireless control application looks like the one on past iPAQs: it allows you to turn on and off either or both radios, and there are no external switches to activate the radios. Windows Mobile 2003 comes with a certificates application, and in addition, HP supports LEAP on their WiFi enabled Pocket PCs. The 4155 has a LEAP control panel applet and HP's Enroll, a certificate enroller. Bluetooth The iPAQ 4155 uses HP's Bluetooth Wizard which is powerful and user-friendly. It walks you through connecting to a variety of devices, from your ActiveSync partner (if you have a USB Bluetooth adapter installed on your PC), to mobile phones to access points and GPS units (it doesn't support Bluetooth headsets). The Bluetooth software is made by Widcomm and is version 1.4.1. I ActiveSync-ed wirelessly, connected to Belkin and Red-M Bluetooth access points for Internet access and, transferred files to other Bluetooth enabled Pocket PCs. Speeds when ActiveSyncing and surfing the Net were good, though not as fast as using WiFi, which is to be expected since WiFi offers greater speeds. screen shot Compatibility While the 4000 series iPAQs are not compatible with iPAQ expansion sleeves, the connector on the bottom of the unit is the same as that used on the iPAQ 2215, 3000 and 5000 series iPAQs, so you should be able to use those accessories that connect to this port with the 4150 (yay!). This means iPAQ keyboards, GPS and chargers made for those models will work. Software Bundle HP always offers a good software bundle with their iPAQ Pocket PCs. The 4150 came with the usual suite of iPAQ custom applications: iTask task manager, iPAQ Backup (SpriteSoft), HP Mobile Printing, HP Certificate Enroller, LEAP, Bluetooth Manager and their iPAQ Image Zone (HP's improved image viewer). Note that unit doesn't come with Nevo, the ever-popular AV remote software, which is installed in ROM on the iPAQ 2215 and on the now discontinued iPAQ 3900 series and iPAQ 5450. Pocket PC standard apps include Pocket versions of Word, Excel and Outlook, MSN Messenger, Terminal Services, VPN client, Jawbreaker (a Bubblets game) and ClearType Tuner. 3rd party apps include Westtek ClearVue Suite (for viewing MS Office docs), Resco File Explorer 2003, F-Secure FileCrypto Data Encryption, RealOne Player for Pocket PC and iPresenter PowerPoint converter. Benchmarks We've run benchmarks using VOBenchmark 3 from Virtual Office Systems . I've compared the iPAQ 2215 , iPAQ 5555 , and the iPAQ 1945 to the 4155. All tests were run with units fresh out of the box with no other software added, and the storage cards were 60% full with data and applications. For some reason, our 4155 didn't get along with the storage card write tests, so we weren't able to record values for the storage cards tests. Higher numbers are better (shown in bold) . Test HP iPAQ 2215 (PPC 2003, Intel PXA 255 400 MHz processor) iPAQ 5555 (PPC 2003, XScale PXA255 400 MHz) HP iPAQ 1945 (Samsung 266 MHz) iPAQ 4155 (PPC 2003, XScale PXA255 400 MHz) CPU Floating Point 12.68 12.66 9.33 12.69 CPU Integer 26.96 25.82 18.39 26.96 Graphics Bitmap BitBlt 78.25 39.76 28.06 22.39 Graphics Bitmap StretchBlt 76.70 (grow) 28.60 (shrink) 73.50 (grow), 29.90 (shrink) 14.40 (grow) 11.50 (shrink) 18.70 (grow), 15.70 (shrink) Graphics Filled Ellipse 4.68 4.96 2.67 4.79 Graphics Filled Rectangle 12.94 9.41 5.99 11.15 Graphics Filled Round Rect. 3.82 3.78 2.15 3.76 GAPI Lines N/A N/A 35.90 58.90 Memory Allocation 11.23 11.31 8.56 11.27 Memory Fill 1.97 1.99 1.34 1.91 Memory Move 1.24 1.34 0.77 1.22 Text 5.20 with ClearType enabled 4.80 with ClearType Enabled 6.20 with ClearType enabled 9.10 with ClearType Enabled Conclusion If you're looking for a power handheld in a small package, then the iPAQ 4155 may be the ticket. It's as small as the iPAQ 1900 series (OK, hair larger), yet has a top of the line processor, Bluetooth, WiFi and supports SDIO. Add in compatibility with iPAQ connector accessories such as keyboards and GPS and you're set. This model should be great for folks who coveted the iPAQ 5555's strong networking features and processor, but wanted something smaller and less expensive. Pro: Fast processor, excellent display, integrated Bluetooth and WiFi that has very good range. Extremely small, light and attractive. User replaceable battery. Cons: More expensive than lower end Pocket PCs on the market, but you do get a lot for your money, and an amazing hardware suite fitted into a very small unit. Application buttons aren't a gamer's dream. No CF slot. Suggested list price $449 The 4150 and 4155 have different model numbers because HP uses different model numbers to track sales in consumer vs. business channels. Both come with a cover pack iPAQ case (canvas, not a very nice one), USB cradle, charger, one battery, an extra stylus, software CD and manuals. The iPAQ 4350/4355 is a 4150 with an integrated thumb keyboard. That unit is one inch longer and costs $50 more. I am now a believer and definitely prefer it over the Palm OS due to its ease of use, compatibility and similarity to the Windows PC environment. This also results in a faster learning curve. Integrated wireless: This was the selling factor, and it did not dissapoint me. I got it to work at home and at the office, where I connect to different wireless access points. The iPAQ allows you to create individual profiles for every connection, so there is no need to manually configure every time you switch networks. Bluetooth: This technology is becoming more common around airports, offices, malls and other places, although probably you'll need to incur in a connection fee. I have not tested this feature yet although my iPAQ recently came across and recognized a Bluetooth network on one of the airports I travelled to. Synchronization: The iPAQ supports Outlook (preferably 2002) for Calendar, e-mail, notes, file and task synching. The Active Synch software is included and required on your host PC in order to start synchronizing with your PDA. A maximum o 2 PCs (partnerships) can be established for synching. Methods of synchronization include IR(Infrared), USB(using the included cradle), WLAN (yes, you can synch wireless) or serial. Word and Excel documents are automatically converted into Pocket PC format when they are synchronized with the iPAQ. The original document needs to be copied into the Pocket PC folder (Pocket_PC My Documents) on your host PC before performing the synch. Internet: In order to connect to the Internet, you are required to be connected to a network, be it WLAN or Bluetooth. There are a few interesting web links included with your iPAQ and you can add your own favorites as well. Navigations is similar to Internet Explorer although you are required to scroll up/down and left/right continously on web sites that are not mobile-friendly. E-mails: E-mail accounts on the iPAQ are setup in an almost exact manner as Outlook on a normal PC. By default, and in order to conserve memory, e-mail attachments are not downloaded, there's also a default limit of e-mails you can carry at a time. E-mails can be downloaded while connected to the Internet or synched using the methods mentioned previously. What about games? Two games are included: Guess what? Solitaire is one of them! The other one is Jawbreaker, a very simple but extremely entertaining game. There are many web sites with additional programs that can be downloaded for your iPAQ. Programs and utilities included: MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player, Pocket Excel and Word, Pocket MSN, Microsoft Reader, Calculator, Terminal Services Client among others. Security: Password security is optional; there are two security options, a simple 4-digit number and a more complex alphanumeric password option. Wireless connection security is obtained using 64 or 128 bit WEP encryption. Obviously your PDA is as secure as the network it is connecting to. Setting up 128 bit encryption on your iPAQ won't work if your wireless access point is unsecured. Time settings: Up to two different time zones are available at the same time. Display: Very clear display, sharp, easy to read text, adjustable text size and fonts in some programs. Battery: The iPAQ possesses a respectable battery duration. It obviously varies according to your battery saving settings. Reducing the default screen brightness helps as well as turning off the wireless access or lowering the sound volume. Settings: You can monitor memory usage and power consumption, remove programs, adjust backlight settings, align the screen, sharpen the text, etc. Other features: Voice recording: There's a button on the upper left corner of the iPAQ to start recording short messages or reminders, very handy. MP3 audio: MP3 files can be downloaded and played on your PDA using Windows Media Player. A headphone jack is also available for your private listening pleasure. Memory is limited though, is not like you can have a CD full of music on your iPAQ, don't confuse it with an MP3 player. Letter Recognizer - A very cool option where the iPAQ attempts to recognize your handwriting and converts it into readable text. Block recognizer - It's similar to the Palm's graffiti recognition Transcriber - It recognizes words written in cursive Notes can also be quickly handwritten as if using the iPAQ as a paper Notepad. Images can also be viewed using your iPAQ, and as with the MP3 files, you should consider the memory limitations. Memory: Additional memory can be obtained with Secured Digital (SD) memory cards. These come on 128, 256 and 512MB sizes at reasonable prices. The HP iPAQ 4155 is a complete, full-featured piece of equipment, well worth its price. User Rating: 5 Great Pocket PC I bought the HP IPAQ 4155 for 3 Reasons: 1)I set up a Wireless B/G Network in my home and needed to access it while I was on the road. 2) I was becoming dissastifed with how slow my Treo 300 was surfing the web. 3) I wanted to surf the web as fast as possible without a laptop or PC. I've had this unit about a month. I am extremely satisfied with it thus far. It is my first Pocket PC. I've been using the Palm OS for over 5 years. To be sure, the Palm OS is more intuitive to operate. But I can do so much more with Windows Mobile Premium 2003. The HP IPAQ is a great MP3 Player (get excellent sounding stereo headphones), a very good PDA and, above all, has tremendous WIFI signal strength. The WIFI is built into the unit so there is really nothing to set up. I connected to my wireless network at home as soon as I took the unit out of the box. Lots of people have wireless routers in NYC so it is simple for me to connect (for free) when I am outside my home. I find the WIFI signal strength on the unit is about 1500 feet; but that depends upon the Router I am connecting to. I am so satisfied with the HP IPAQ 4155 that I am seriously considering ditching my Treo 300 and getting a Bluetooth Phone so I can surf the Internet when I cannot pick up a WIFI signal. The Processer inside this unit is very fast. I have not tried the Bluetooth yet. The only negatives were the cheap case and cradle and the weak battery. My battery was going down to 0 after 2 hours of wifi surfing. I rectified these deficiencies by buying a hotsync charge and sync cable, a new custom case and a 2000mAh battery, which required a bigger battery door. Now I can surf a good 4 hours daily with the wifi before the battery completely drains. Bottom Line: HP hit a homerun with this unit. User Rating: 1 The LCD cracks by itself! The LCD cracked while in my pocket with no drop or hit! Sent the unit to HP and after bouncing around their customer service, I was charged $190 for the repair. Browsing the internet (unsuccessfully trying to find a cheaper repair option) I found several similar complains. It seems like the IPAQ4155 has a serious quality problem that costs 50% of the value of a new unit to fix. I am selling my unit as soon as it comes back from repair and will never by an IPAQ anymore! Word and Excel documents are automatically converted into Pocket PC format when they are synchronized ... Read More Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Pocket PC I bought the HP IPAQ 4155 for 3 Reasons: 1)I set up a Wireless B/G Network in my home and needed to access it while I was on the road. My battery was going down to 0 after 2 hours of wifi ... Read More Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The LCD cracks by itself! HP iPAQ h4150 Review Reviewer: Steve Sande, Webmaster, PDAntic.com Date: December 27, 2003 Click here to purchase a HP iPAQ h4150 or accessories Go To PDAntic.com Home Page (opens a new window) In a recent post here on PDAntic.com I talked about the different devices I've used during the last year. The focus of the article was that I'm currently using a two-piece wireless data solution consisting of a Nokia 3650 Bluetooth camera phone and an HP iPAQ h4150. I've been so impressed with the 4150 that I decided to write a review of this wonderful Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC. Note that throughout this review I'm referring to the iPAQ 4150 - the 4155 is an identical unit that is packaged for purchase at retail outlets while the 4150 comes in a "plain brown wrapper". My first experience with built-in WiFi in a Pocket PC was not a good one. When the Toshiba e740 came out in 2002 as the first Pocket PC with integrated WiFi, I immediately ran out and bought one. What a mistake! That experience turned me off of Toshiba Pocket PCs and really made me question the entire concept of Pocket PCs with WiFi. Battery life was horrible - I could barely spend more than a half-hour or so connected via WiFi before my remaining battery power was so low that it was unusable. The range and sensitivity of the device was also bad. About the only place I could actually use the e740 was in my family room which is only 10 feet away from my wireless access point. Finally, the "old" Pocket PC OS made configuration of wireless connections a chore that wasn't a lot of fun. Needless to say, the e740 ended up in an eBay sale a few months later... As noted in my "Two-Piece Solution" post , I had used a T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone for a while and just didn't like a few things about it. The screen wasn't very bright, the device only had 32MB of RAM, it had a slower processor than many of the other Pocket PCs on the market, it was relatively big, and it didn't easily offer a way to connect to a WiFi network. When I got an HTC Tanager Windows Mobile Smartphone I felt it also had some shortcomings - not enough memory, not fast enough, no WiFi, no Bluetooth, clumsy interface and too small a screen. So these one-piece solutions just weren't doing it for me...although the new Pocket PC Phones that are starting to arrive could make me start to change my mind. The O2 XDA2, with its built-in digital camera, 400 MHz CPU, 64 MB of RAM, built-in Bluetooth and better battery life looks very appealing - it's just too bad it doesn't feature built-in WiFi as well! When the iPAQ 4150/4155 and the 4350/4355 were released, I became very interested in buying one. Here were devices that were fast, had a lot of memory, came with vibrant displays, built-in WiFi and (with the 4350/4355) even an integrated keyboard! After my good experiences with the HP iPAQ h2215 (see the reviews section for my review of that great device), I was much more excited about buying one of the new iPAQs. My choice came down to the 4150 and the 4350, and I decided to go with light weight and small size rather than the integrated keyboard and bigger battery of the 4350. I figured that if I need a keyboard, I can always buy the HP "thumb board" for the 4150 for $39.95. There's also an optional folding keyboard available for $99.99. That's the iPAQ 4150 in the center, surrounded by a Nokia 3650 on the left and an HTC Tanager Smartphone on the right. the 4150 is fairly short and not that much wider than the other devices... ...and it isn't as thick as the other two! This device is tiny! In comparison with the iPAQ h2215, it is 4.47" tall x 2.78" wide x .5" thick and 4.67 ounces compared to 4.54" tall x 3.00 wide x .61" thick and 5.1 ounces! It's amazing to me that HP was able to actually shrink the device and still add integrated WiFi. The main difference is that the iPAQ 2215 has both CF and SD expansion slots, while the iPAQ 4150 has only an SD slot. Will I miss not having the CF slot? Probably not, since all of my wireless connectivity options are already built in and I'll only use the SD slot for memory expansion. I find the 4150 to be very pocketable; I've put it in shirt and pants pockets without feeling like I'm lugging around a brick. It's also very easy to hold in my small hands, much better than my original iPAQ 3650! While the 4150 doesn't have the rubbery side inserts that make the 2215 so easy to hold, it DOES have an unpolished plastic back that seems to make it feel more secure and less apt to slide in my hands. The CPU in the 4150 is the Intel PXA255 running at a speedy 400 MHz. It's also loaded with 64MB of RAM, of which 55MB is user accessible. As mentioned before, there's an SDIO slot for SD and MMC cards. You can actually buy a 1.3 Megapixel digital camera card that'll work with this ($129.99) - I've been tempted to see if I can set up some sort of wireless videophone with the camera and the 4150... The screen is very clear, using the standard 240 pixel wide x 320 pixel high layout at 16 bit color (65,536 colors). Like most Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC devices, the 4150 supports ClearType and you can use a tuner control panel to adjust the way ClearType makes your fonts look. The display is apparently the same one that is used in the iPAQ 1935 - both have a yellowish tinge if you look at them from an oblique angle. Since I almost never use my iPAQ from that angle, I normally don't see that yellow tint and it doesn't bother me. Other people I've talked to find it objectionable and prefer the display on the iPAQ 2215 to this one. If you're going to be looking at your iPAQ display straight on like I normally do, I don't think you'll have a problem with the display on the 4150. "The Yellow Screen Issue". As you can notice in the slightly unfocused picture at the left, the screen is very bright and clear when viewed straight on. From an angle (right) it has a distinct yellow tint. My solution? Don't look at the screen from an angle! The physical layout of the 4150 has some good and bad points. There are four small chrome buttons on the front of the device, as well as the power button on the top center. These buttons launch the standard PIM applications and are initially set to calendar, contacts, Inbox and iTask. Next to the power button are small LEDs that show you what's going on - a flashing blue LED indicates that Bluetooth is operational, while the same LED flashing green tells you that WiFi has been turned on. The other LED flashes red during charging, turning to a steady red when the battery is fully charged. It also flashes green when an alarm goes off. Dominating the center of the lower portion of the device is a navigation button that toggles left/right/up/down and includes a center push button. I found it to be very crisp in operation unlike earlier navigation buttons. My big complaint about the 4150 has to do with the record button, which is located on the upper left side of the device. I'd be willing to bet that at least 75% of the time when I was pulling the 4150 out of the included carry case, I pressed that damned record button and ended up recording sounds! I finally found a setting in the Buttons control panel that disables the Record button when the device is in Standby mode (i.e., turned off). Just about halfway down on the left side of the device on the battery pack door is a small hole for the reset button. As with most PDAs, the top of the stylus screws off and includes a reset "pin". There's also a "slide" on the right side of the device that locks/unlocks the removable battery pack. I found the battery door to be somewhat hard to get on and off, although I'm sure it would become second nature with more practice. The only time I've opened that door was to put the battery in! The bottom of the 4150 has an IrDA infrared port. I can see where the location of this infrared port might make beaming or using the device as a remote control very difficult. That's probably the reason HP didn't equip the 4150 with the "universal remote" application that was so nice to use on the 2215. The bottom also has the USB / dock connector. The top of the 4150 has, from left to right, a standard 3.5 mm audio stereo headphone jack (good, no adapters required!), three small slots for the microphone, the SDIO-compatible SD slot, and the silo for the stylus. The stylus itself is made of metal with a plastic tip and a plastic screw-off section that hides the reset pin. A spare stylus is included. The 4150 has a removable (huzzah!) 1000 mAh Lithium-Ion battery pack and you can recharge another battery pack in the included docking cradle since there's a second slot for that purpose. Replacement batteries are $49.95, and if you need even more battery power you can buy a 1800 mAh battery for $59.95 or even a huge 3600 mAh battery for $129.99! If you're concerned about losing your data when you change battery packs, don't be - there's a backup battery that retains your data. You can make sure that the backup battery is fully charged by looking at the Power control panel. Concerned about losing your data when swapping battery packs? Don't be - that NiMH Backup Battery will keep things going while you're fumbling around for the new battery... I really wanted the 4150 for the included Bluetooth and WiFi (802.11b), and I was not disappointed by either of these wireless connectivity options. Bluetooth works great! I am using it with my Nokia 3650 phone and T-Mobile GPRS account to connect to the Internet. It was easy to set up a pairing between the two devices and get the Nokia phone to act as a Bluetooth modem, even though the Nokia phones are not included as standard Bluetooth phones in the setup wizard. To connect to the Internet, I simply turn on the iPAQ, turn on Bluetooth, then tap the connection icon at the top of the screen and tell it to connect to "Inet via Nokia". Within 10 - 15 seconds I'm connected and able to surf the web. The phone stays in my pocket the entire time, so anyone watching what I'm doing wouldn't even know how the connection is being made! The heart of it all; the Bluetooth Manager application. Here I have an ActiveSync connection with my PC. The center icon is what I use to turn my Nokia 3650 phone into a Bluetooth modem for the iPaq. As noted in my "Mac to Pocket PC Sync Tools" review, I use Bluetooth to sync to my Macintosh laptop. I also use it to sync to my PC now; I find it refreshing to just be able to walk up to my PC, tap an icon on the Pocket PC and have synchronization begin. No cables are needed, which is making the top of my desk visible for the first time in years! WiFi works equally well and the speed is amazing! It was so nice to be able to pull this device out of the box, slap in the battery pack, go to the Start menu and choose "iPAQ Wireless", tap one button to turn on the WLAN connection, and then have the device recognize my home wireless network. All I had to do is tell it whether or not I wanted to connect to "Internet" or "Work", then enter in my 128-bit WEP encryption passcode. Could it be any easier? The iPAQ Wireless control panel makes it very easy to turn Bluetooth or your WLAN (WiFi) on and off with a single tap of the stylus. The integrated WiFi seems to be extremely sensitive. I was in a restaurant the other night and turned on WiFi just for fun. Much to my surprise, it tried to connect me to another wireless network. The closest building that could possibly have a wireless network is almost 200 feet away! For those of you who work in corporate environments where security is of the utmost importance, you'll find the built-in LEAP protocol to be very important. We have a WiFi network in my office that requires LEAP, and it amazed our network engineers that LEAP was integrated into the 4150. A plethora of settings...Bluetooth, Certificates, a way to tune ClearType, formatting your iPAQ File Store, and setting up the all-important LEAP protocol for your corporate wireless LAN. And that's not all of the secure networking capabilities of the 4150. It also has VPN functionality included. For the first time, I am able to access my work email (on an Exchange server) through a GPRS connection. I make my GPRS connection, then fire off a VPN connection to our VPN gateway. Once it has accepted my password, I'm able to get access to our Exchange server farm and check my calendar and email. Speed? The 4150 has it. This is without a doubt the fastest handheld I've ever used. Nothing seems to lag; everything pops up very quickly with no delays. I went out to the Spb Software House site and pulled up benchmarks for a number of Pocket PCs (including my first iPAQ, a 3650!) and here's what their overall speed benchmark showed: This benchmark shows the relative overall speed of the iPAQ 4150 compared to other Pocket PCs. If you want to do your own comparisons or see how various functions match up, please take a look at the Spb Software House site . The built-in software on the 4150 is pretty standard - you've got the Pocket Outlook suite (Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks), Pocket Excel and Word, Pocket Internet Explorer, Microsoft Reader, MSN Messenger, Terminal Services Client, Windows Media Player and of course Solitaire. HP built in some other applications such as iPAQ Backup, iPAQ Image Zone, and iTask. iTask is a program launcher that has been included with several generations of iPAQs. I thought that iPAQ Image Zone and the "Pictures" application were almost duplicate programs - they both allow you to do slide shows, view pictures, etc... Pocket MSN is an interesting application for me, since my DSL provider requires me to use MSN for my email service. Unfortunately, when you fire up Pocket MSN at this time it simply tells you that this is a service that will be "coming soon". I just use MSN Mobile at this time to check my MSN mail... Some of the many included programs - I added Palm Reader... It's the usual set of apps with some duplications and a few programs that don't really work right now (i.e., Pocket MSN) So, what software came with the 4150? As with most Pocket PCs, the CD provided Microsoft Outlook 2002 and ActiveSync 3.7, as well as a good assortment of other free packages: Adobe Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC Audible Player RealOne Player Cadenza mNotes (synchronize with Lotus Notes) XcelleNet Afaria ClearView Office Colligo Workgroups Personal Edition Ilium Software's ListPro LE F-Secure FileCrypto for Pocket PC Personal Edition HP Mobile Printing iPresentation Mobile Converter LE MARGI Presenter-to-Go WorldMate There are also a number of links on the CD-ROM to sites where 4150 owners can download free trial versions of various packages, including a number of Voice Over IP solutions. Of this free software, I found Adobe Acrobat Reader to be the most useful to me. A lot of these packages were chosen for enterprise deployment in mind, and for those of us who don't need these functions this is wasted space on a CD-ROM. I'd love to see HP offer two CDs; one with software that would be of interest to the enterprise crowd and another with good utilities for enthusiasts and home users. Is this an expensive Pocket PC? If you need WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities in a very small, lightweight package, then the $450 suggested retail price won't seem too bad. I actually purchased my 4150 for about $50 less; it pays to shop around and look for specials. I would venture a guess that the price of the 4150 will drop as we get into 2004 and other competitors (i.e., Dell, Toshiba) come out with new, faster models to compete with the 4150 and 4350. When you consider that a palmOne Tungsten T3 with Bluetooth and without WiFi sells for about the same $400 I spent on my 4150, the iPAQ starts looking pretty good! Of course, it doesn't have that 320 x 480 display that the Tungsten T3 boasts...nor does it come with the built-in capability to switch from portrait to landscape mode instantly the way the T3 does. In summary, I find the HP iPAQ h4150 to be the best Pocket PC I've ever used. It is fast, extremely compact and lightweight, feels solid, and the connectivity features are second to none. If you’re in the market for a Pocket PC that does more than just keep your calendar and contacts up to date, the 4150 is a brilliant choice. If you don't need the WiFi function, the HP iPAQ h2215 is probably a good choice for you and will save you some money. But with the proliferation of wireless LANs in homes and businesses, you might be missing out if you don't get a device with this capability built in. When I pull out the h4150 and can download 100 emails (most of them unfortunately spam...) in much less than a minute, I am extremely glad I made the decision to get built-in WiFi and didn't have to worry about configuring a third-party WiFi adapter! Review: HP iPAQ h4355 Keyed into Users Page 1 | 2 | Next Click to View If you hate writing with a stylus and you're definitely looking for a Pocket PC, as opposed to a Palm, the Hewlett-Packard's iPAQ h4355 may just be the PDA for you. Building off HP's successful iPAQ line, the h4355 adds a thumb-keyboard so that you can jot down e-mails and notes with a familiar typewriter-style input, as with a Blackberry, rather than a mistake-prone handwriting recognition system. But its keyboard isn't the only thing that makes the h4355 stand out. It also has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a better-than-average battery. Busy business travelers are sure to like it, since it's made for those who need to keep in touch while on the go. To accommodate the keyboard, the h4355 measures a bit longer than other PDAs on the market: 5.4-inches long by 2.9-inches wide and 0.6-inches deep. It also weighs in at 5.8 oz. Whether or not the extra bulk bothers you is a personal thing, but we found it a tad uncomfortable in a pocket, especially when housed in the included slip case. Front (The slip case, by the way, may be the least attractive case to ever accompany a pocket device. It's rough texture has all the charm of a burlap potato sack, and it lacks even a simple belt clip, so it's good for nothing except preventing scratches. You'll find yourself looking for a replacement immediately, but since the h4355 is longer than most PDAs, you can't just use any generic case.) The h4355 was the first Pocket PC to have a built-in keyboard, joining the Palm Tungsten C, which was the only other PDA to have one. HP did it right, giving the keyboard the familiar QWERTY layout and making the keys rounded and slightly raised for easy use. We especially like the built-in keyboard backlighting, which turns on with the click of a button. That means you can easily type away in a dimly-lit commuter train or while waiting for a movie to start. The Tungsten C doesn't feature a backlight for its keyboard. The keyboard includes a number pad section and a few useful extra buttons, like one that opens the Start menu. After a little practice, you'll be inputting at least as fast as with a stylus. The h4355 includes both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, giving you all you currently need to stay connected wirelessly. Both can be easily turned on with a program under the Start menu called iPAQ Wireless, and they can be turned on independently of each other to save battery life. When Bluetooth is on, a light on the top left of the unit blinks blue, and when Wi-Fi is on the same light blinks green. Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi worked well in our testing, letting us go online or connect to a Bluetooth printer with no problem. Unlike most wireless units, the h4355, like the Tungsten C, lacks a external antenna, although its wireless range is still robust enough to accommodate a roaming worker. Control Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Other controls on the h4355 include four buttons above the mini-keyboard that provide one-button access to your calendar, contacts, and e-mail, as well as HP's own iTask app, which opens a small window in the lower right of your screen displaying all the currently running applications. Since the Windows Mobile 2003 OS leaves programs running, even after you click the X in the upper right-hand corner to make them go away, users need a quick way to see which programs are still on. iTask offers a solution. It also offers quick access to system controls and brightness settings. Customer Review: Superb PDA I had been always curious about the Pocket PC OS and its usefulness and practicality on the PDA environment. Great Pocket PC I bought the HP IPAQ 4155 for 3 Reasons: 1)I set up a Wireless B/G Network in my home and needed to access it while I was on the road. The LCD cracks by itself!
