Back Reviews: Proporta Axim Case Home Axim X5 Aluminum Protective Case I have been a fan of Proporta since the first time I used one of their products (the iPAQ Aluminum case). Recently, Proporta has expanded their line of aluminum PDA cases. One of their new cases is for the Dell Axim X5. The Axim X5 has a number of buttons and ports that should be exposed (unlike my iPAQ 3600 that only has a few), so I was interested to see how Proporta would make a case that protects the device, while still leaving parts of it easily accessible. Also, since the Axim is one of the larger new PDA's on the market, I was interested to see how much bulk the case added to the device. Like many PDA's, the Axim's style is modeled as an all-in-one, so it does not have the easy expandability of a device like the iPAQ (which lends itself well to form-fitting cases). This presents two problems when trying to develop a case for the Axim. First, the case has to be able to somehow hold the device since there are no connection "ports" to connect to. Proporta accomplishes the task of holding the Axim in the case while it is closed by a partial aluminum cover on the base and a small piece of aluminum on the top. But when the case is opened, the top tab does not hold the device in. Proporta saw this problem, and invented a creative solution. Embedded inside the back of the case are two metal pieces which grip around the two small bumps on the back of the battery. Together, all this makes the device stay securely in the case. The second problem is bulk. Aluminum cases are supposed to add protection with minimal size. I believe Proporta did the best job they could at making the case as formfitting as possible, but the case does add a little more bulk than the iPAQ case did with my iPAQ. The aluminum Axim case leaves eleven ports, buttons, or other things accessible while the aluminum case is on the device. These places have less protection, but damage is still less likely due to the aluminum around them. On the bottom of the case, both the AC adapter port and the serial port are exposed. This works great for connecting the AC adapter or the USB sync cable, but the added size of the case makes it not possible to connect the serial port via the sync cradle. Usually you would expect the front face of the case to leave nothing exposed, but Proporta added a little feature and left the cool little Axim speaker exposed. Call it an added bonus for users that like to listen to the "high fidelity" sound of the embedded speaker. (Don't deny it, you know you do it.) On the left side of the device the SD card slot, scroll switch, record button, and soft reset button are all accessible. The case makes the SD card slot a little more difficult to use, once again because of the added size of the case. The scroll switch works just well with the case and comes in very handy for controlling the volume in Windows Media Player. The record button is near impossible for me to press, though I only blame this partially on Proporta as I can not always get it to activate when the device is not in this case. Really this button is not of any help because the microphone on the front face of the device, so it is covered by the aluminum casing. The soft reset button is the final button accessible on the left side. Almost the whole top of the device is exposed for use. The CF slot is exposed as is the access for pulling out cards. The IrDA port is exposed for beaming as is the headphone jack. The stylus can be taken out of the device both when the case is open and when it is closed. Because of all the buttons and the SD slot on the left side of the Axim, Proporta had to move the hinge for the cover to the right side of the device. This causes the device to be easier to hold by right-handed user, though it takes a little getting used to as it seems like it opens the “wrong way.” One of the complains I would have is that the sync/serial port is exposed at the bottom. Being that I do not have a USB cable, it would be nice if there was some kind of cover, though I understand that many users have the USB cable and having this port always open is helpful. As I stated before, the record button is not very easy to press with the case, nor does it really have a lot of functionality when the case is closed (because of the hidden microphone). The biggest problems with this case are really only because of the style of the Axim. The Axim does not let itself particularly well to a form-fitting case, but Proporta makes likely one of the best form-fitting aluminum cases for the Axim. Once again, I am very satisfied with Proporta’s solution for protecting the Axim with a solid, stylish, and practical. I have little fear of my Axim being damaged with this case. The aluminum Axim X5 case retails for $39 US (£27.45 in the UK) shipped from Proporta and is likely one of the best hard cases available for the Axim. Dave's Score - 9.0 This means, this product is about as close to "the best" as you can get. This product embodies quality in its design and application, and is something I would use. Though you still should consider it for yourself, most would probably be happy with this product even if they were unable to try it prior to purchase. Read on for the details. Dell came late to the Windows Mobile party, but fashionably so. Its Axim line has had a respectable showing for its low price, Dell's standard modus operandi, and with its latest three-model X30 series pushes high-end specifications at reasonable prices. This review deals with the midrange version of the three: the Dell Axim X30 Advanced 312 MHz. The X30's case is not the best, but it covers an impressive handheld Design At first glance, the X30 is almost identical to the Axim X3i , with silver plastic front and back faces and black sides in a somewhat box-shaped design. Measuring 116 x 14.9 x 77.2 mm with antenna and weighing 139 grams, it is comfortable in the hand aside from a slight lip on the sides that if held wrong hurts the hand. The screen is a bright, 16-bit TFT display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels that is crisp and clear except for an over-aggressive ClearType that created bit of fuzziness. We got used to it after a while, but a ClearType tuning tool would be welcome. Buttons on the X30 abound. The 5-way D-pad is a bit small and has limited travel, but the other four round application buttons were fine. Flanking those on the left and right are two small buttons that are only labeled with etchings on the sides of the device for the voice recorder and wireless toggle, respectively. The left side of the handheld includes a headphone jack and jog wheel, while the power button sits dead center above the screen. The top of the device includes an IR port, SDIO capable SD Card expansion slot, and the multi-colored antenna. The bottom of the handheld includes the usual serial port. The X30 has plenty of indicator lights, but they are all well-placed. The wireless antenna includes a dull but steady blue light to indicate that the Bluetooth radio is active as well as a green light that flashes to indicate Wi-Fi activity. Both are within the antenna itself, making them dull enough to not be annoying but bright enough to be clearly visible. The power button also glows orange when on AC power and green when fully charged. Kudos to Dell for making a visually-useful but not visually-annoying device, something many companies need to learn. The stylus is of Dell's usual flat aluminum variety. The X30 Advanced 312 MHz does not include a cradle, only a charging/sync cable, although it is easy to leave the sync part home when traveling. Audio quality through the unit's headphone jack was fine, however the loudspeaker as expected provided signature tinny audio. Connectivity As mentioned the X30 sports the usual IR port, SDIO card slot, and serial port, all standard on even entry-level handhelds today. There is more, however, as this top model includes dual wireless support via Bluetooth and 802.11b Wi-Fi. A good set of Bluetooth profiles is included, and unlike its predecessors the Wi-Fi connection supports both WEP and WPA courtesy of Windows Mobile 2003 SE. I thought it to be an excellent product worthy of the highest praises. When Maxpoint asked me to take a look at one of Enermax’s new cases again, the CS-5281X-Br I was thrilled to see it. Sure enough within a few days I had the desk sitting in my home office waiting to get unpacked and stuffed full of goodies. I knew, from reading up on the case, that this would not be a workstation case, and it is clearly geared for the DIY gamer and enthusiast market, even for some LAN party goers. I unpacked the box and found the case to be extremely light. It’s an aluminum construction, with an acrylic window through which to peer onto the motherboard. The front of the mid-tower mimics the popular Dragon series of cases from Chieftec that has been OEM-ed all over the PC world. Enermax’s flavor of that design is the FS-710 and FS-7101 server towers. However, the plastic is of a much lighter material, supposedly to keep down the weight of the unit overall, which I don’t mind telling you again is really feather light. I’m used to honking heavy steel enclosures for my workstations, so this was a nice treat. The drive bays are covers by a swinging door with a striking red and black panel with a silver X. The center of the X sports a clear plastic light behind it, held in place by a special two-unit drive bezel. The top slot in the door is conveniently left open for an optical drive, so you don’t have to always open the door to access you CD or DVD drive. This I liked very much about the CS-10181 case, and like very much about this case as well. Oh did I mention the case was very light? Next Page Bottom Of The Page Deals by TTZ DealTime! Guest Review : E&B Dell Axim Slipper Case by Mark Teitelbaum D ate: 02/25/2003 Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Product Requirements: Device: Dell Axim Pocket PC After receiving a Dell Axim for Christmas, I have been searching for a quality, dependable case for my new Pocket PC. Well, the search is over and the case is from E&B Cases , makers of quality PDA cases. After nearly two weeks from my order date, my E&B Slipper Axim case finally arrived. First off, there are two versions, a regular Slipper case for $36.95 plus S&H, and a Slipper case with a belt clip for $41.95 plus S&H. I am reviewing the regular version. When I first took it out of its packaging, I fell in love with it. It is crafted with very high quality Nappa cowhide leather. The case is very soft and has that oh-so-great smell of new leather. The Slipper Axim case has the “EB” symbol on the front only. It is closed using a magnetic strip and when opening it up, there are two slots for money/credit cards/business cards, two SD/MMC card slots, and an all-purpose miscellaneous slot, which I use for my CF cards. Since the closure method uses a magnet, it is a good idea NOT to place credit cards in the card slots. The magnet in the flap could damage them. [There are 2 slots for business cards and money, 2 slots for SD/MMC cards, and a multipurpose slot] The case fits the Axim perfectly and is very secure. I don’t think it’s possible for it to fall out of the case. All of the buttons on the front are easily accessible and can all be easily pushed while in the case (except for the power button which takes a bit of practice to get used to.) Thankfully, there is no strip of leather between the buttons and the screen. On the bottom of the case are holes cut out for the power cord and sync cable to plug into. The left side has openings for the reset button, record button, scroll wheel, and the SD/MMC card slot. Another neat feature is that when closed, the top of the case has a small hole for headphones to plug into so you can easily listen to MP3’s while the case is closed. [As you can see, the case fits the Axim very well] The case provides protection for the front, back, top and bottom, and both sides of the PDA. My Axim has survived numerous drops onto concrete while in this case. The magnetic strip holding the case closed is very strong so that it cannot accidentally open. There are three problems with the case that I have found: 1) You cannot put the Axim in the cradle while in the case. 2) It is kind of hard to insert SD cards in the two storage slots in the cover of the case. Also, after finally inserting them, they are hard to remove. 3) Anything put in the miscellaneous slot usually goes too far back into the case. Other than that, I highly recommend this case for anybody who wants something that gives full protection and easy access to everything on their Axim. Now for the specs: Axim in the case: Length: 5 1/8” Width: 3 1/8” Height: 1 ¼” (closed) 1” (open) Just the Axim: Length: 4 ¾” Width: 3” Height: ¾” ***All measures approximate*** Price: $36.95 for regular, $41.95 for belt-clip version. Pros: High quality, soft leather Pretty cheap compared to Vaja cases (36.95 for regular, 41.95 for belt clip) Tightly holds the Axim Room for memory cards and business cards/money Easy access to ALL buttons Cons: Can’t put the Axim in the cradle while in the case Takes some practice to get SD cards in and out Most anything you put in the misc. slot goes too far back Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Aximsite > Axim X5 Forums > X5 Accessories > Great Axim Case Review PDA Aximsite Forums View Full Version : Great Axim Case Review NMkiD 01-29-03, 03:51 PM I'm not saying this is a great review, but I think this is a great case! :D This is a case I found at Office Max, it was in a hard plastic sealed container thing, see thu and your not able to open it to try it out. This at first detered me from getting it but I asked a sales person if I could bring it back, they said yes, so I said what the hell! This case is designed for an iPAQ, thats how its labled and advertised. It wasnt in the section where the cases were for show it was in a cardboard display thing in the general area. Its from a company called Avenues in Leater, the website is www.avenuesinleather.com however the product I'm reviewing is not on that website. The case was $40, and leather, it has 2 zipper pouches, and its not very iPAQ specific, as a matter of fact there is a similarity in most PDA's button locations so it was not a problem to place the Axim in it. You can really fill this thing up, I currently have: 1) the Axim (very nice snug fit, has stretchy fabric to ensure snug fit) 2) a Liknsys CF card (dosent push on the screen, it sits against the leather section holding in top of the Axim.) 3) extra stylus 4) MICRO IR Keyboard 5) 3400 extra battery 6) earbuds 7) sometimes... the USB sync cable, this really stretches it out I like to fit a lot of things into a small space because I dont like to carry alot and this is relitevly small for holding so much, it also has the basic case accessories, room for business cards, small pockets, etc, and actually 3 CF card holder slots. Now for the pics, well 1 pic actually, its a little big but not really, just let it load: http://www.unm.edu/~rciii/casepic.jpg later fellas VirtualDoom 01-29-03, 06:05 PM That case looks awesome, i've been looking for something just like it, I think i've found my case :D John andsoitgoes 01-29-03, 07:29 PM Sigh!! If only it wasn't leather!! :( I really need to find a case like this that's canvas!! But that's perfect - argh! Nick NMkiD 01-30-03, 11:00 AM up.. people keep asking about cases, yet not to many responses :( Ike 01-30-03, 12:45 PM http://www.avenuesinleather.com/products.htm There is a page here with PDAs, and the Ipaq in particular. #3710-02 looks like what you are talking about....? ~Ike avatar 01-30-03, 01:38 PM Found this site while looking for cases. Haven't seen it listed here before. http://www.directcase.com/ EPol29 01-30-03, 02:44 PM There is a useful site: www.freecases.com. They have selection of "free" cases ( pay only s&h) I ordered from them paing just $6.95 for Incipio Pocket PC Black Nylon. Hopefully it will fit my Axim. jknacnud 01-30-03, 03:11 PM I have one question for you NMKid, do the credit cards press against the Axim screen? That is my biggest turnoff on other cases because the cards are always opposite the screen and press against it. Not only could this be harmful for the screen, it could also scratch it. Maybe I am just too uptight about keeping my screen looking nice. jpross 01-30-03, 09:43 PM NMKid that case looks like what I am looking for too. It looks like you can put a keyboard and everything you could possibly want to put into it. Thanks for the info. NMkiD 01-30-03, 10:53 PM I have a writeshield screen protector so I dont have to worry about anything damaging the screen, especially just a credit card, but yeah, when I put a few cards in there is the potential for the card to touch the screen... I'm not sure if that one on their website is the same one, its got a palm pictured so I can't be 100% sure, but I think it might be afterall. kuza 02-20-03, 10:22 PM www.executivepda.com www.covertec.com www.pielframa.com www.krusell.se jknacnud 02-20-03, 11:04 PM Thanks for those links. I especially enjoyed learning about the waterproof case. That is just COOL!! Not that I would need it, but it was fun to look at. I am glad to be see so many new options coming out for our Axim's. markfur 02-24-03, 10:33 AM see http://www.thepouch.com/ neoprene case with a flip over cover, a pocket on the back and a web strap on the back which can be used to attach to a belt. I have been using for over a month and have been very satisfied. Chrissss 02-26-03, 08:46 PM NMkiD, Do you have the model# for the case in this review? I'm in Canada and I've checked several stores and cannot find this case. It looks just about perfect, but I may need to order one if I can't find it locally. Chris... jpross 02-27-03, 11:06 PM Thanks NMkiD I went out and bought the case and it works just fine for me and my keyboard but I cant seem to put as many things into it as you have, especially the earbuds. I can't seem to get them to fit in either compartment. vBulletin v3.0.3, Copyright ©2000-2004, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.

Highlights WM2003 Second Edition; fast 624MHz processor; integrated Bluetooth and 802.11b Wi-Fi; tons of available accessories; bright display Lowlights Small 950mAh battery standard; shipping process is a bit disorganized; blocky form factor Vendor/Reseller Dell Axim X30 "High" page Price Retail price is US$349, but common discounts and coupons can knock it down below $300; $297 at Dell right now with a rebate I bought and then reviewed the Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC (see my April 2003 review ) a short time after Dell first entered the handheld market. While I appreciated the low cost and dual slots, I had a few stability issues with the X5 that resulted in my moving on to another device. I am happy to say that these issues were not present on the Axim X30 "High" that Dell gave me to evaluate. The new X30 devices are the first Windows Mobile Second Edition devices to become available in the US, and start at an incredible US$199. The X30 "Low" uses a 312MHz processor and has no integrated wireless capabilities and a limited amount of memory. The X30 Mid uses the same 312MHz XScale processor but includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as double the memory capacity. The X30 High is the model I evaluated, and the extra $70 will get you a 624MHz processor with a cradle compared to the X30 Mid. Check out this side-by-side comparison to evaluate each model's specs. The X30 can only be purchased from Dell directly, and is not available on other sites or retail locations. The review unit I received did not come with a Companion CD or cradle so I cannot comment on those items. Axim X30 High next to MDA II MDA II (right) next to the X30 This is the first Axim I have used since the X5, and I was pleased with the very bright display, improved jog dial, improved directional pad, improved stylus, and available hardware buttons. The device is quite blocky and has some rather odd shapes on the back, especially compared to the sleek MDA/XDA II devices. There is an external antenna with indicator lights that also takes away from a sleek look, but in a way it is also attractive, with an industrial feel to it. The device feels much more solid in my hand than the X5, especially when comparing the directional pads. Hardware On the front of the device you will find raised Dell lettering in the top left corner. Working clockwise will bring you next to the microphone, then the power button along the top of the display. The power button is well placed, and it glows orange while charging and changes to green when the unit is fully charged. If you press and hold the power button then the backlight is toggled between off and on. This does not turn off the display, as I was used to with my Jornada 568. upper front Upper front of the device Along the bottom of the front from left to right you will find the first small rectangular hardware button that wraps a bit around the left side and is set by default to start a voice recording. I remapped this button to switch between landscape and portrait modes, and find that a much more common and useful function for the button. You will then find two hardware buttons on either side of the directional pad. These four traditional hardware buttons can be remapped as you desire using the Buttons settings utility. The center directional pad is a small oval with a smaller oval action button in the center. It worked fairly well, but I would like to see it raised up a bit more from the plane since I had to move my thumb a bit to get accurate pushes all the time. lower front Lower front showing hardware buttons The far right rectangular hardware button on the front below the display is set to enable or disable the wireless radios on the device. While it is nice to have a button dedicated to turning on the integrated radios, pressing the button will start both the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios at the same time. I was told about a utility that will separate the two and allow you to map the hardware button to just start Wi-Fi. You can then use the Today screen's Bluetooth Manager icon to start Bluetooth, as many people may be used to on other models of Windows Mobile devices. It takes about 7 to 8 seconds for both radios to turn on and off when you press the button. starting wireless Enabling the wireless radios Along the top from left to right you will discover the consumer-strength infrared port, the SDIO slot, and the wireless antenna. It was nice to use a consumer IR port again that could be used with remote control software to control multiple pieces of equipment from distances ranging up to about 20 feet. I do wish Dell would have included the excellent Nevo software my iPAQ 2215 had, but Dell is known for not including much software in order to trim costs. The SDIO slot is well placed if you want to use something like an SD camera in the slot. The wireless antenna has a green light on the left and a blue light on the back to indicate the active radio and connection status. top of the X30 High Top of the device On the right side of the X30 you will find the stylus slot. There are three small holes down about two-thirds of the height where you can see indents in the stylus line up to hold it in place. The stylus is a nice metal model with decent heft, and I liked it even though it was a bit flatter than I was used to. included stylus Stylus The left side is where you will find the 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack and improved jog dial. The jog dial can also be pressed in to serve as an action button. left side Left side The serial port is the only thing found along the bottom of the device, and it's the same as the Dell Axim X3i so you can use the same accessories that are readily available for that device. I have heard complaints that this port can be quite fragile when connecting sync or charge cables with the X30 in a case, so be careful with this port. bottom of the X30 Bottom view The back of the device has a rather unique profile unlike anything I have seen before, and it was one of the first things that struck me as different. There are rubber mounts at the four corners, but the top two are lower than the two protrusions that stick out of the back above the battery compartment. There is a battery lock that you can slide and hold with your stylus to remove the back battery door. The battery is attached to the door and snaps firmly into place. You will also find the speaker down in the bottom left of the device and the soft reset hole under the bottom right side of the battery door. The speaker is decent, but not as loud as the ones I have heard on my iPAQ devices, and it's not very audible when the device is placed in the included slip case. back of the X30 Back of the X30 The X30 is the first device to use the new Intel XScale PXA270 "Belvedere" 624MHz processor. This machine screams, and it reminds me of how my Palm Powered devices have always performed when switching apps. Even though the new WM2003 Second Edition includes a new spinning icon while waiting for something to occur, you won't see it much while running the X30 at maximum speed. You can throttle the X30 between maximum speed at 624MHz, PowerSave mode at 208MHz, or auto mode where the speed adjusts according to system requirements. I ran it at max speed most of the time so I could get a feel for how zippy the device could be compared to my other Pocket PC devices. Extensive benchmark testing has been done by a number of sites that had the device before release, and I recommend you check out the Aximsite X30 review for plots of the results and more comparison photos with other Dell models. managing processor speed Managing the processor speed Chris also has some nice battery tests in his Aximsite review that compared well to my own tests. I ran Windows Media Player at the fastest processor setting on the brightest display setting and was able to watch about 2 hours and 15 minutes of The Return of the King before the low battery warning appeared, showing about 17% remaining. During my normal, every day use I was able to use Wi-Fi for about 45 minutes, use Bluetooth for another 30 to 40 minutes, and use it for reading and PIM stuff without getting a low battery warning. I charge my devices every night, and the X30 wasn't much different from the rest; it should take you through a day of normal use unless you use wireless extensively. There is also the large capacity 1800 mAh battery you can buy for it. You get 63.41 MB of RAM and 30.88 MB of usable ROM in the X30, which should satisfy most of your needs since you can store most of your unused applications on a Secure Digital card. I placed important things like Resco File Explorer, Pocket Bible translations, and input methods into the ROM area since I wanted these with me if I ever had to perform a hard reset and didn't have a good backup available. The display is quite bright and has great color saturation, with no yellow effect like my previous iPAQ models had. The colors look wonderful, and the display looks better than the one on my MDA II. Accessories (cables, chargers, cradle) The X30 comes with an inexpensive black leather slip case with a belt clip on the back. The device fits into it rather snugly, and the case is thick enough to provide fairly decent protection while carrying the X30 around. This was the only case I used during my review, and it was much better than the last two I received with my HP iPAQs. The X30 High model comes with a cradle that allows you to charge a spare battery at the same time, but I was not sent one with my review unit. I was sent a USB sync/charge cable, but discovered through trial and error that the cable only charges via USB if you have the X30 turned off. The problem was that ActiveSync liked to initiate a sync every once in a while, so the device would keep coming on while I was trying to charge it. The included AC adapter plugs into a piece on the USB cable, so you can charge it while the device is on. I usually buy the retractable sync/charge cables and would love to see manufacturers start including them with handhelds. belt slip case Included belt slip case Software Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition includes most everything you should need to productively use your Dell Axim X30. Titles included with the operating system are: Contacts Calendar Tasks Notes Pocket Word and Excel Messaging (renamed and slightly updated version of Pocket Inbox) Windows Media Player 9 Pocket Internet Explorer File Explorer MSN Messenger Terminal Services Calculator Jawbreaker Solitaire Voice Recorder Pictures There are also some utilities that Dell placed into the ROM, including Data Backup, Power management utility, Switcher Bar, Home, and the Dell WLAN Utility. The Data Backup utility lets you backup all your data or selected PIM databases to a selectable location. There is no scheduled backup function or more specific data selection, but it does serve as a basic application to protect your data. You can also recover from stored backups using this utility. Since Dell included a 624MHz processor, they also include a Power management utility that lets you take advantage of this processing power when you desire. As discussed in the hardware section above you can select three options for managing the processor. The Switcher Bar can be activated in your System settings and gives you quick access to your Brightness and Power settings and lets you exit the active program or all programs. The utility seems quite functional, but I use Pocket Plus 2 for this functionality. The Home feature Dell includes is similar to the one found on the Axim X5, and it serves as an application launcher similar to what you find on Palm Powered devices. I use Spb Pocket Plus's Today screen plug-in and did not use Home very much. The Dell WLAN Utility is actually quite feature-packed, and allows you to fully manage your 802.11b wireless connections. You can enable or disable the radio from the utility, although you cannot enable the radio without first having pressed the hardware button and turned on the radio initially. You can troubleshoot your connections, test out links, and perform other wireless network diagnostics from within the WLAN Utility. Switcher Bar Switcher Bar Dell WLAN Utility Tools menu WLAN Utility Tools menu Dell WLAN Utility Adavnced menu WLAN Utility Advanced menu network management Advanced network management You may have noticed that Microsoft Reader is not one of the applications included in the ROM of the device. When the Dell X30 was released there was not yet a version available that supported the landscape mode on Second Edition devices, and that may have contributed to this lack of Reader on the X30 High. There is now a version of Reader that works in landscape mode (as we blurbed about in early July ), and it will be interesting to see if future Second Edition devices include it in the ROM. I prefer not to have it in ROM since Microsoft often updates it anyway with new DRM features and requires the user to then put the update into RAM. I prefer to put Reader in the usable ROM area so I'm able to update it without having two versions on my device. Dell is not known for including a lot of extra applications like HP does with most of its iPAQ models, as can be seen on the following list showing some of what is included on the Companion CD : Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1 Outlook 2002 Dell Diagnostic Utility Resco Picture Viewer Trial versions of several utilities, games, and applications including, Resco File Explorer, Links, Calligrapher, Total Remote, and more. Since I did not receive a Companion CD, I was unable to evaluate the functions in the Dell Diagnostic Utility. Trial versions are good for new PDA buyers to get a feel for what is out there, but I also think it needs to be made clear that the software is indeed only a trial so as not to confuse the new user. Experiences with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition updates include: VGA 640x480 resolution support Native landscape/portrait modes Improved screen formatting in Internet Explorer Transcriber update that now allows for custom gestures to launch applications and insert custom text Custom text sizing allows you to choose from 5 sizes Icon and naming changes throughout the device and applications In addition to the great specifications of the X30, I wanted to really check out the improvements made in Windows Mobile Second Edition. The VGA support requires hardware with a VGA display, and we may see that coming from Dell in the future--we do know that one iPAQ will be out soon with this display. I was very interested in the native landscape support that could be performed on the fly without requiring a soft reset, and I found myself using it all the time on the X30 for checking e-mail and surfing the Internet. Remapping the left hardware button like I mentioned above was the smartest thing I could have done, or else you have to go to Start > Settings > System > Screen > General and then tap right- or left-handed landscape and then tap OK . 6 or 7 screen taps to rotate or one button press--the decision was easy. The current issue that Microsoft has with the landscape mode is that the text entry methods mess things up in a big way by taking away almost half of the display. MS or third-party developers need to come up with something like MessagEase on my Tungsten T3, where the input panel is stacked vertically and off to the right or left side of the display. I avoided entering text in landscape mode unless I was using an external keyboard. Now this is where landscape and an external keyboard almost takes away the advantages of an integrated keyboard on a Handheld PC. I used my Think Outside and Targus IR keyboards to write documents in landscape mode with Pocket Word. portrait/landscape controls Portrait and landscape control screen Pocket /Excel in landscape mode Excel in landscape mode surfing in landscape Surfing PDAGeek in landscape mode I also change the text size on the device to make it a bit smaller since I do have good eyesight with my glasses on and like to see more on the display. In the Settings > System > Screen utility you can choose from 5 different sizes. The smallest size is really unreadable on these QVGA displays, and may work better on VGA devices. The largest text size may help those with poor vision, but be aware that this only changes the text size in selected programs like Today , Messaging , Calendar , and Tasks . It doesn't change the text in Notes , Pocket Word , Pocket Excel , and others since the text in these programs can be zoomed in or resized for better readability. text size adjustment Managing the text size calendar with small text Calendar with small text The web page formatting of Pocket Internet Explorer has improved quite a bit, and you now have three choices when surfing on your device. You can choose One Column, Default , or Desktop layouts, and I generally went with One Column to eliminate any side-to-side scrolling. There are other features I like to see when browsing, such as full-screen view, button mapping, and multiple webpages, so I use PIEPlus (see my review ) to get these with Internet Explorer. The last major update in Windows Mobile Second Edition that I used regularly while evaluating the X30 was the new functionality built into Transcriber , the handwriting recognition input method included with Windows Mobile devices. I have always installed Calligrapher in the past because it has a better recognition engine and allows you to create custom on-screen gestures to launch applications, insert custom text, and perform other functions. I was happy to see Microsoft add the custom gesture--or shorthand--functionality to Transcriber, and I think this can be a powerful tool if a user investigates what it really can do. I have set up gestures to launch common applications I use that I can't map to hardware buttons. For example, if I write a "w" on my display when I am not inputting text, Pocket Word will be launched; I also use an "e" for Excel and "i" for Internet Explorer. Microsoft has also updated the Transcriber Options interface, and in my opinion it is much more user friendly. There are more ink color options, and custom dictionaries can be added as well. Transcriber Shorthand wizard Using the Shorthand Wizard custom Shorthand gestures Common Shorthand gestures Conclusion Since my MDA II does not have Wi-Fi capabilities, I found myself pulling out the X30 when I wanted to do a quick check of my e-mail around the house or if I wanted to do a little mobile Web surfing. A fellow vanpool rider, Scott , purchased an Axim X30 after owning an Axim X5, and he seems quite happy with it, too, except for the poor battery life. I think we will consistently find battery life is the weak point in PDAs until serious improvements are made in battery design. The Dell Axim X30 is a screaming machine, and I have to applaud Dell for being the first out of the gate with a device running WM2003 Second Edition that is extremely well priced. You really cannot complain about Pocket PC devices being out of a reasonable price range with the Low model starting at only $199 and when for $150 more you get dual wireless, double the processor speed, and double the memory capacity. The X30 High is a winner, and should do quite well in today's market while requiring HP to think about its pricing scheme. Ratings Defense I give the Dell Axim X30 High 4.5 Geekheads for Quality since it feels very solid, has a super fast processor and dual integrated wireless radios and a bright display and a comfortable stylus, and only suffers a bit with battery life and a blocky form factor. For Geekness I also award the X30 High 4.5 Geekheads, and I attribute that to the high powered specifications at an incredible price point. The industrial look of the device may also be considered geeky. An improvement in the way the wireless radios are managed and more included software would bump it up to 5 Geekheads. Because of how pleased I was with this third-generation Axim that is priced within reach of most consumers. I am also awarding the Dell Axim X30 High a Geek.com Pick ! Pocket PC Accessories Posted by: Bill Landon on Sep 18, 03 | 1:14 pm Provided by: FreeTranslation.com Dell Axim Case from Proporta The Proporta aluminum case for Dell’s Axim is over-all a great investment for any Axim owner. It is stylish and sleek, provides great protection for the device, and still gives adequate access to the unit. The case is not much bigger than the Axim itself, which was convenient, and it hardly weighs anything, an additional convenience. I have gotten a number of compliments from my co-workers on how nice the case looked: it’s brushed aluminum style is very sleek and attractive. image The case is sturdy. I often put the unit in my back pocket, and I’ve never been concerned about damaging the Axim. The fact that the interior of the unit is padded provides a nice snug fit for the Axim, protecting it from scratches and from bouncing around too much. One point for improvement might be to pad the lid where it rolls over at the top, since I have sometimes been concerned about scratches from that area because it is unpadded. image This case provides a great deal of access to the Axim, without needing to take it out. I am impressed that I am able to access every function except the application buttons, D-Pad, and power button while the case is closed. Some nice touches are that the power port and sync port are available, and that there is even a small port for the speaker, while the lid is closed. However, I wish that the access port for the rocker and record button was a little larger in the length toward the SD access port, as it was a bit difficult to fully manipulate the rocker with my largish thumb. In addition, the lid style makes it uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time. The lid hinge is on the right, and requires the user to hold the case with finger tips only on the right side while the lid is open. I will take the Axim out of the case, or lay it flat to do any prolonged text writing entry. Overall, I feel that this is a wonderful addition to my Axim. Despite some small inconveniences regarding access, and the need for padding on the lid of the unit, I feel that this is a huge improvement over the case that comes with the Axim from Dell. Jason Killian Guest Reviewer Editors Note: I echo Jason's comment on the hinge and how it is difficult to hold for long periods of time with the lip open. That issue in not exclusive to Proporta but to all aluminum and hard shell cases for PDA's. What they need to develop is a double hinge that allows the lid to fold back behind the unit. If you take a look at the iPAQ Style Pack cases and the rubber hinge you will get the idea of what I am talking about. In a hard case it would be an armadillo looking hinge and make the unit far more conformable to use for extended periods of time. I plan on adding this editorial note to all future PDA hard case reviews until someone comes up with a manufacturing solution. I had a Visor Platinum (sans Omnisky module... other modules that have a very low profile will fit though.)" It also holds a note pad and your stylus in an elastic loop. For the money this is a great case with high protection value. It does have the dreaded velcro connector, however, if you are careful, you can avoid this by just setting your visor or palm in there without having to attach it with sticky stuff. This can become very annoying and may even ruin your case over time. Bellagio has found a solution to this. Appearance: The Bellagio case looks like any other solid black leather case. There is a small Bellagio logo on the front and that is about it. No colored stitching or anything. On the back there is a silver button/clip which you use to close the case. Pretty Standard. This case is made out of quality leather. The Front of the case is soft, which is great for the screen and to just carry it around. Slots and Openings: The Bellagio case features a CF/Headphone opening at the top. This is very accessible and is great if you want to use WiFi or a GPS. On he inside there are 2 SD card slots, and 2 Credit card slots. On the actual Axim part, there is an opening which exposes your buttons, D-Pad and bottom of the Axim. The problem with this is that the case fits in such away that the buttons are not easily accessible. The top 2 buttons are partly covered or are just too close to the lining of the case. Also the power button is obstructed by the lining of the case. On the side of the case you have access to the SD card slots, Joggle switch and Record button. The Soft-Reset button is covered. Features: This case has the ability to fit into your cradle, which is very useful. This is don't by a flap at the bottom of the case. This flap lifts up, making you Axim fit into the cradle. This flap does not look that great on the case though. Conclusion: This case is great if you want it to fit into the cradle, but as a standard case; I would not go with the Bellagio Leather Axim case. Usability, looks, quality, and value. I will give you my thoughts on each, and show you a few pictures to illustrate this as well. USABILITY I find the Covertec case very effective to use. If you are worried that being only a half slipper the Axim my not be held in place secure enough, don’t be. If you have small hands like myself then you probably find that cases tend to add an uncomfortable amount of width, and bulk to it making you PPC uncomfortable to hold. With the half slipper this does not happen, yet it is still held in place quite adequately. There is enough internal structure to the case to protect the PPC if dropped. Although with the half slipper some may think there is not as much protection as with some other cases. For me, my main protection concern is the screen. The inner stiffener of the lid does that very well. The above picture shows several things quite well. First, it shows how the magnetic catch works. Personally I would have done away with the tongue altogether and placed magnets on the front of the case. I see little benefit in going with magnetic closure, and still keeping the somewhat awkward tongue. I find they catch on pockets, and add bulk. Next in the usability department are the pockets on the inside of the lid. Placement of these pockets has been well thought out. The pockets for the SD cards are large enough for them to completely hide the card. If you do this it is very difficult to remove them. If you leave them protruding slightly they are positioned so that they won’t touch the screen without some direct pressure. The slipper adds enough bulk at that point that it raises the lid off the screen. There are three slots for credit cards, or CF cards. I doubt you will get more than one CF card in at a time though. These are also well placed so that the cards touch the buttons, not the screen. This should not be a problem. I think it is good advice to never have your device turn on with any button pushes. Unless, you like dead batteries. I keep my WiFi card in one of these slots. There are cutouts for the headphones, charging, and sync cables. No you cannot put it in the cradle while in the case, but as I said you could use a sync cable. The SD slot, toggle lever, and record button are all open. However to do a soft reset you need to slip the Axim out of the slipper a bit. Not a big deal unless you only have one good hand. :) Because of the cutout for the headphone I don’t think it would be possible to modify this case with a slot for a WiFi card. It wouldn’t leave much leather to hold the lid on. Covertec does not offer an option for a belt clip with this case. A bit of a negative in the usability department I think. LOOKS The axim case is available in three colors, black, brown, and red. The stitching is in a contrasting beige, which gives it a distinctive classy look. The cut and shape of the case fits well with the Axim. It’s made to fit for sure. It does not look bulky or awkward. The leather has a nice look and feel to it, and has the Covertec logo stamped into the lower right corner of the lid. QUALITY At first look you can see the quality of this case. The contrasting color of stitching shows the absolute perfection in the stitching. The feel of the leather is quite soft, yet there is a kind of industrial look, and feel to it. There is a stiffener in the lid, and the back that gives it quite a bit of rigidity, which I think is where the industrial thought comes from. Since cases are meant to protect I guess this is a good thing. I have not had this case anywhere near long enough to pass full judgment on its durability. I can say that I have never had a case that has inspired a feeling of durability like this one though. VALUE At forty bucks USD I give this case full marks for value. It does pretty much all a case of this type is supposed to do. It is very usable. It looks great. The quality is undeniable, and it is reasonably priced. CONCLUSION If I were designing this case I would lose the magnetic tongue, and simply place magnets on the face. I would also make a bit of a contour cut in the side of the slipper to allow for an easier soft reset. Plus I would offer a belt clip option. Other than that I wouldn’t change anything. It is a great case in all departments. One piece of advice. If your spouce happens to have a PPC as well you better buy two........my wife stole this one, and won't give it back. I guess I'm going to have to call Covertec and get another one for myself. :) Dave Evans Hits: 271 Rating: Rating: 0 Votes: 0 (Rating Scale: 1 = worst, 10 = best) Added on: May 11 2003 Author/Source: Dave Evans Author's email/website: n/a Posted by: Paragon Comments: 0 Comment(s) | Rate this Article Back Set as your default homepage Add favorite Privacy Report Bugs © 2002 Ontario Pocket PC Users Group MaxWebPortal Snitz Forums Go To Top Of Page
