Back Reviews: Proporta Axim Case Home Axim X5 Aluminum Protective Case I have
been a fan of Proporta since the first time I used one of their products (the
iPAQ Aluminum case). Recently, Proporta has expanded their line of aluminum PDA
cases. One of their new cases is for the Dell Axim X5. The Axim X5 has a number
of buttons and ports that should be exposed (unlike my iPAQ 3600 that only has a
few), so I was interested to see how Proporta would make a case that protects
the device, while still leaving parts of it easily accessible. Also, since the
Axim is one of the larger new PDA's on the market, I was interested to see how
much bulk the case added to the device. Like many PDA's, the Axim's style is
modeled as an all-in-one, so it does not have the easy expandability of a device
like the iPAQ (which lends itself well to form-fitting cases). This presents two
problems when trying to develop a case for the Axim. First, the case has to be
able to somehow hold the device since there are no connection "ports" to connect
to. Proporta accomplishes the task of holding the Axim in the case while it is
closed by a partial aluminum cover on the base and a small piece of aluminum on
the top. But when the case is opened, the top tab does not hold the device in.
Proporta saw this problem, and invented a creative solution. Embedded inside the
back of the case are two metal pieces which grip around the two small bumps on
the back of the battery. Together, all this makes the device stay securely in
the case. The second problem is bulk. Aluminum cases are supposed to add
protection with minimal size. I believe Proporta did the best job they could at
making the case as formfitting as possible, but the case does add a little more
bulk than the iPAQ case did with my iPAQ. The aluminum Axim case leaves eleven
ports, buttons, or other things accessible while the aluminum case is on the
device. These places have less protection, but damage is still less likely due
to the aluminum around them. On the bottom of the case, both the AC adapter port
and the serial port are exposed. This works great for connecting the AC adapter
or the USB sync cable, but the added size of the case makes it not possible to
connect the serial port via the sync cradle. Usually you would expect the front
face of the case to leave nothing exposed, but Proporta added a little feature
and left the cool little Axim speaker exposed. Call it an added bonus for users
that like to listen to the "high fidelity" sound of the embedded speaker. (Don't
deny it, you know you do it.) On the left side of the device the SD card slot,
scroll switch, record button, and soft reset button are all accessible. The case
makes the SD card slot a little more difficult to use, once again because of the
added size of the case. The scroll switch works just well with the case and
comes in very handy for controlling the volume in Windows Media Player. The
record button is near impossible for me to press, though I only blame this
partially on Proporta as I can not always get it to activate when the device is
not in this case. Really this button is not of any help because the microphone
on the front face of the device, so it is covered by the aluminum casing. The
soft reset button is the final button accessible on the left side. Almost the
whole top of the device is exposed for use. The CF slot is exposed as is the
access for pulling out cards. The IrDA port is exposed for beaming as is the
headphone jack. The stylus can be taken out of the device both when the case is
open and when it is closed. Because of all the buttons and the SD slot on the
left side of the Axim, Proporta had to move the hinge for the cover to the right
side of the device. This causes the device to be easier to hold by right-handed
user, though it takes a little getting used to as it seems like it opens the
“wrong way.” One of the complains I would have is that the sync/serial port is
exposed at the bottom. Being that I do not have a USB cable, it would be nice if
there was some kind of cover, though I understand that many users have the USB
cable and having this port always open is helpful. As I stated before, the
record button is not very easy to press with the case, nor does it really have a
lot of functionality when the case is closed (because of the hidden microphone).
The biggest problems with this case are really only because of the style of the
Axim. The Axim does not let itself particularly well to a form-fitting case, but
Proporta makes likely one of the best form-fitting aluminum cases for the Axim.
Once again, I am very satisfied with Proporta’s solution for protecting the Axim
with a solid, stylish, and practical. I have little fear of my Axim being
damaged with this case. The aluminum Axim X5 case retails for $39 US (£27.45 in
the UK) shipped from Proporta and is likely one of the best hard cases available
for the Axim. Dave's Score - 9.0 This means, this product is about as close to
"the best" as you can get. This product embodies quality in its design and
application, and is something I would use. Though you still should consider it
for yourself, most would probably be happy with this product even if they were

examines the Dell Axim X30 Advanced 312 MHz to see where it differs from its
speedier sibling. Read on for the details. Dell came late to the Windows Mobile
party, but fashionably so. Its Axim line has had a respectable showing for its
low price, Dell's standard modus operandi, and with its latest three-model X30
series pushes high-end specifications at reasonable prices. This review deals
with the midrange version of the three: the Dell Axim X30 Advanced 312 MHz. The
X30's case is not the best, but it covers an impressive handheld Design At first
glance, the X30 is almost identical to the Axim X3i , with silver plastic front
and back faces and black sides in a somewhat box-shaped design. Measuring 116 x
14.9 x 77.2 mm with antenna and weighing 139 grams, it is comfortable in the
hand aside from a slight lip on the sides that if held wrong hurts the hand. The
screen is a bright, 16-bit TFT display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels
that is crisp and clear except for an over-aggressive ClearType that created bit
of fuzziness. We got used to it after a while, but a ClearType tuning tool would
be welcome. Buttons on the X30 abound. The 5-way D-pad is a bit small and has
limited travel, but the other four round application buttons were fine. Flanking
those on the left and right are two small buttons that are only labeled with
etchings on the sides of the device for the voice recorder and wireless toggle,
respectively. The left side of the handheld includes a headphone jack and jog
wheel, while the power button sits dead center above the screen. The top of the
device includes an IR port, SDIO capable SD Card expansion slot, and the
multi-colored antenna. The bottom of the handheld includes the usual serial
port. The X30 has plenty of indicator lights, but they are all well-placed. The
wireless antenna includes a dull but steady blue light to indicate that the
Bluetooth radio is active as well as a green light that flashes to indicate
Wi-Fi activity. Both are within the antenna itself, making them dull enough to
not be annoying but bright enough to be clearly visible. The power button also
glows orange when on AC power and green when fully charged. Kudos to Dell for
making a visually-useful but not visually-annoying device, something many
companies need to learn. The stylus is of Dell's usual flat aluminum variety.
The X30 Advanced 312 MHz does not include a cradle, only a charging/sync cable,
although it is easy to leave the sync part home when traveling. Audio quality
through the unit's headphone jack was fine, however the loudspeaker as expected
provided signature tinny audio. Connectivity As mentioned the X30 sports the
usual IR port, SDIO card slot, and serial port, all standard on even entry-level
handhelds today. There is more, however, as this top model includes dual
wireless support via Bluetooth and 802.11b Wi-Fi. A good set of Bluetooth
profiles is included, and unlike its predecessors the Wi-Fi connection supports
both WEP and WPA courtesy of Windows Mobile 2003 SE. Page 2 E-mail this story

Price A little while back I had the pleasure of reviewing Enermax’s cs-10181
entry-level server/workstation case for The Tech Zone. I thought it to be an
excellent product worthy of the highest praises. When Maxpoint asked me to take
a look at one of Enermax’s new cases again, the CS-5281X-Br I was thrilled to
see it. Sure enough within a few days I had the desk sitting in my home office
waiting to get unpacked and stuffed full of goodies. I knew, from reading up on
the case, that this would not be a workstation case, and it is clearly geared
for the DIY gamer and enthusiast market, even for some LAN party goers. I
unpacked the box and found the case to be extremely light. It’s an aluminum
construction, with an acrylic window through which to peer onto the motherboard.
The front of the mid-tower mimics the popular Dragon series of cases from
Chieftec that has been OEM-ed all over the PC world. Enermax’s flavor of that
design is the FS-710 and FS-7101 server towers. However, the plastic is of a
much lighter material, supposedly to keep down the weight of the unit overall,
which I don’t mind telling you again is really feather light. I’m used to
honking heavy steel enclosures for my workstations, so this was a nice treat.
The drive bays are covers by a swinging door with a striking red and black panel
with a silver X. The center of the X sports a clear plastic light behind it,
held in place by a special two-unit drive bezel. The top slot in the door is
conveniently left open for an optical drive, so you don’t have to always open
the door to access you CD or DVD drive. This I liked very much about the
CS-10181 case, and like very much about this case as well. Oh did I mention the

Product Requirements: Device: Dell Axim Pocket PC After receiving a Dell Axim
for Christmas, I have been searching for a quality, dependable case for my new
Pocket PC. Well, the search is over and the case is from E&B Cases , makers of
quality PDA cases. After nearly two weeks from my order date, my E&B Slipper
Axim case finally arrived. First off, there are two versions, a regular Slipper
case for $36.95 plus S&H, and a Slipper case with a belt clip for $41.95 plus
S&H. I am reviewing the regular version. When I first took it out of its
packaging, I fell in love with it. It is crafted with very high quality Nappa
cowhide leather. The case is very soft and has that oh-so-great smell of new
leather. The Slipper Axim case has the “EB” symbol on the front only. It is
closed using a magnetic strip and when opening it up, there are two slots for
money/credit cards/business cards, two SD/MMC card slots, and an all-purpose
miscellaneous slot, which I use for my CF cards. Since the closure method uses a
magnet, it is a good idea NOT to place credit cards in the card slots. The
magnet in the flap could damage them. [There are 2 slots for business cards and
money, 2 slots for SD/MMC cards, and a multipurpose slot] The case fits the Axim
perfectly and is very secure. I don’t think it’s possible for it to fall out of
the case. All of the buttons on the front are easily accessible and can all be
easily pushed while in the case (except for the power button which takes a bit
of practice to get used to.) Thankfully, there is no strip of leather between
the buttons and the screen. On the bottom of the case are holes cut out for the
power cord and sync cable to plug into. The left side has openings for the reset
button, record button, scroll wheel, and the SD/MMC card slot. Another neat
feature is that when closed, the top of the case has a small hole for headphones
to plug into so you can easily listen to MP3’s while the case is closed. [As you
can see, the case fits the Axim very well] The case provides protection for the
front, back, top and bottom, and both sides of the PDA. My Axim has survived
numerous drops onto concrete while in this case. The magnetic strip holding the
case closed is very strong so that it cannot accidentally open. There are three
problems with the case that I have found: 1) You cannot put the Axim in the
cradle while in the case. 2) It is kind of hard to insert SD cards in the two
storage slots in the cover of the case. Also, after finally inserting them, they
are hard to remove. 3) Anything put in the miscellaneous slot usually goes too
far back into the case. Other than that, I highly recommend this case for
anybody who wants something that gives full protection and easy access to
everything on their Axim. Now for the specs: Axim in the case: Length: 5 1/8”
Width: 3 1/8” Height: 1 ¼” (closed) 1” (open) Just the Axim: Length: 4 ¾” Width:
3” Height: ¾” ***All measures approximate*** Price: $36.95 for regular, $41.95
for belt-clip version. Pros: High quality, soft leather Pretty cheap compared to
Vaja cases (36.95 for regular, 41.95 for belt clip) Tightly holds the Axim Room
for memory cards and business cards/money Easy access to ALL buttons Cons: Can’t
put the Axim in the cradle while in the case Takes some practice to get SD cards
in and out Most anything you put in the misc. slot goes too far back Let us know

not saying this is a great review, but I think this is a great case! :D This is
a case I found at Office Max, it was in a hard plastic sealed container thing,
see thu and your not able to open it to try it out. This at first detered me
from getting it but I asked a sales person if I could bring it back, they said
yes, so I said what the hell! This case is designed for an iPAQ, thats how its
labled and advertised. It wasnt in the section where the cases were for show it
was in a cardboard display thing in the general area. Its from a company called
Avenues in Leater, the website is www.avenuesinleather.com however the product
I'm reviewing is not on that website. The case was $40, and leather, it has 2
zipper pouches, and its not very iPAQ specific, as a matter of fact there is a
similarity in most PDA's button locations so it was not a problem to place the
Axim in it. You can really fill this thing up, I currently have: 1) the Axim
(very nice snug fit, has stretchy fabric to ensure snug fit) 2) a Liknsys CF
card (dosent push on the screen, it sits against the leather section holding in
top of the Axim.) 3) extra stylus 4) MICRO IR Keyboard 5) 3400 extra battery 6)
earbuds 7) sometimes... the USB sync cable, this really stretches it out I like
to fit a lot of things into a small space because I dont like to carry alot and
this is relitevly small for holding so much, it also has the basic case
accessories, room for business cards, small pockets, etc, and actually 3 CF card
holder slots. Now for the pics, well 1 pic actually, its a little big but not

cases because the cards are always opposite the screen and press against it. Not

have to worry about anything damaging the screen, especially just a credit card,
but yeah, when I put a few cards in there is the potential for the card to touch
the screen... I'm not sure if that one on their website is the same one, its got

Thanks NMkiD I went out and bought the case and it works just fine for me and my
keyboard but I cant seem to put as many things into it as you have, especially
the earbuds. I can't seem to get them to fit in either compartment. vBulletin

reviewed the Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC (see my April 2003 review ) a short time
after Dell first entered the handheld market. While I appreciated the low cost
and dual slots, I had a few stability issues with the X5 that resulted in my
moving on to another device. I am happy to say that these issues were not
present on the Axim X30 "High" that Dell gave me to evaluate. The new X30
devices are the first Windows Mobile Second Edition devices to become available
in the US, and start at an incredible US$199. The X30 "Low" uses a 312MHz
processor and has no integrated wireless capabilities and a limited amount of
memory. The X30 Mid uses the same 312MHz XScale processor but includes Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth as well as double the memory capacity. The X30 High is the model I
evaluated, and the extra $70 will get you a 624MHz processor with a cradle
compared to the X30 Mid. Check out this side-by-side comparison to evaluate each

standard with the X30 High Initial Impressions Everything comes in a no frills
brown cardboard box, and most of the time in separate boxes from around the
country depending on what you added to your custom order. The X30 can only be
purchased from Dell directly, and is not available on other sites or retail
locations. The review unit I received did not come with a Companion CD or cradle
so I cannot comment on those items. Axim X30 High next to MDA II MDA II (right)
next to the X30 This is the first Axim I have used since the X5, and I was
pleased with the very bright display, improved jog dial, improved directional
pad, improved stylus, and available hardware buttons. The device is quite blocky
and has some rather odd shapes on the back, especially compared to the sleek MDA/XDA
II devices. There is an external antenna with indicator lights that also takes
away from a sleek look, but in a way it is also attractive, with an industrial
feel to it. The device feels much more solid in my hand than the X5, especially
when comparing the directional pads. Hardware On the front of the device you
will find raised Dell lettering in the top left corner. Working clockwise will
bring you next to the microphone, then the power button along the top of the
display. The power button is well placed, and it glows orange while charging and
changes to green when the unit is fully charged. If you press and hold the power
button then the backlight is toggled between off and on. This does not turn off
the display, as I was used to with my Jornada 568. upper front Upper front of
the device Along the bottom of the front from left to right you will find the
first small rectangular hardware button that wraps a bit around the left side
and is set by default to start a voice recording. I remapped this button to
switch between landscape and portrait modes, and find that a much more common
and useful function for the button. You will then find two hardware buttons on
either side of the directional pad. These four traditional hardware buttons can
be remapped as you desire using the Buttons settings utility. The center
directional pad is a small oval with a smaller oval action button in the center.
It worked fairly well, but I would like to see it raised up a bit more from the
plane since I had to move my thumb a bit to get accurate pushes all the time.

hardware button on the front below the display is set to enable or disable the
wireless radios on the device. While it is nice to have a button dedicated to
turning on the integrated radios, pressing the button will start both the Wi-Fi
and Bluetooth radios at the same time. I was told about a utility that will
separate the two and allow you to map the hardware button to just start Wi-Fi.
You can then use the Today screen's Bluetooth Manager icon to start Bluetooth,
as many people may be used to on other models of Windows Mobile devices. It
takes about 7 to 8 seconds for both radios to turn on and off when you press the
button. starting wireless Enabling the wireless radios Along the top from left
to right you will discover the consumer-strength infrared port, the SDIO slot,
and the wireless antenna. It was nice to use a consumer IR port again that could
be used with remote control software to control multiple pieces of equipment
from distances ranging up to about 20 feet. I do wish Dell would have included
the excellent Nevo software my iPAQ 2215 had, but Dell is known for not
including much software in order to trim costs. The SDIO slot is well placed if
you want to use something like an SD camera in the slot. The wireless antenna
has a green light on the left and a blue light on the back to indicate the
active radio and connection status. top of the X30 High Top of the device On the
right side of the X30 you will find the stylus slot. There are three small holes
down about two-thirds of the height where you can see indents in the stylus line
up to hold it in place. The stylus is a nice metal model with decent heft, and I
liked it even though it was a bit flatter than I was used to. included stylus
Stylus The left side is where you will find the 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack and
improved jog dial. The jog dial can also be pressed in to serve as an action
button. left side Left side The serial port is the only thing found along the
bottom of the device, and it's the same as the Dell Axim X3i so you can use the
same accessories that are readily available for that device. I have heard
complaints that this port can be quite fragile when connecting sync or charge
cables with the X30 in a case, so be careful with this port. bottom of the X30
Bottom view The back of the device has a rather unique profile unlike anything I
have seen before, and it was one of the first things that struck me as
different. There are rubber mounts at the four corners, but the top two are
lower than the two protrusions that stick out of the back above the battery
compartment. There is a battery lock that you can slide and hold with your
stylus to remove the back battery door. The battery is attached to the door and
snaps firmly into place. You will also find the speaker down in the bottom left
of the device and the soft reset hole under the bottom right side of the battery
door. The speaker is decent, but not as loud as the ones I have heard on my iPAQ
devices, and it's not very audible when the device is placed in the included
slip case. back of the X30 Back of the X30 The X30 is the first device to use
the new Intel XScale PXA270 "Belvedere" 624MHz processor. This machine screams,
and it reminds me of how my Palm Powered devices have always performed when
switching apps. Even though the new WM2003 Second Edition includes a new
spinning icon while waiting for something to occur, you won't see it much while
running the X30 at maximum speed. You can throttle the X30 between maximum speed
at 624MHz, PowerSave mode at 208MHz, or auto mode where the speed adjusts
according to system requirements. I ran it at max speed most of the time so I
could get a feel for how zippy the device could be compared to my other Pocket
PC devices. Extensive benchmark testing has been done by a number of sites that
had the device before release, and I recommend you check out the Aximsite X30
review for plots of the results and more comparison photos with other Dell
models. managing processor speed Managing the processor speed Chris also has
some nice battery tests in his Aximsite review that compared well to my own
tests. I ran Windows Media Player at the fastest processor setting on the
brightest display setting and was able to watch about 2 hours and 15 minutes of
The Return of the King before the low battery warning appeared, showing about
17% remaining. During my normal, every day use I was able to use Wi-Fi for about
45 minutes, use Bluetooth for another 30 to 40 minutes, and use it for reading
and PIM stuff without getting a low battery warning. I charge my devices every
night, and the X30 wasn't much different from the rest; it should take you
through a day of normal use unless you use wireless extensively. There is also
the large capacity 1800 mAh battery you can buy for it. You get 63.41 MB of RAM
and 30.88 MB of usable ROM in the X30, which should satisfy most of your needs
since you can store most of your unused applications on a Secure Digital card. I
placed important things like Resco File Explorer, Pocket Bible translations, and
input methods into the ROM area since I wanted these with me if I ever had to
perform a hard reset and didn't have a good backup available. The display is
quite bright and has great color saturation, with no yellow effect like my
previous iPAQ models had. The colors look wonderful, and the display looks
better than the one on my MDA II. Accessories (cables, chargers, cradle) The X30
comes with an inexpensive black leather slip case with a belt clip on the back.
The device fits into it rather snugly, and the case is thick enough to provide
fairly decent protection while carrying the X30 around. This was the only case I
used during my review, and it was much better than the last two I received with
my HP iPAQs. The X30 High model comes with a cradle that allows you to charge a
spare battery at the same time, but I was not sent one with my review unit. I
was sent a USB sync/charge cable, but discovered through trial and error that
the cable only charges via USB if you have the X30 turned off. The problem was
that ActiveSync liked to initiate a sync every once in a while, so the device
would keep coming on while I was trying to charge it. The included AC adapter
plugs into a piece on the USB cable, so you can charge it while the device is
on. I usually buy the retractable sync/charge cables and would love to see
manufacturers start including them with handhelds. belt slip case Included belt

you should need to productively use your Dell Axim X30. Titles included with the
operating system are: Contacts Calendar Tasks Notes Pocket Word and Excel
Messaging (renamed and slightly updated version of Pocket Inbox) Windows Media
Player 9 Pocket Internet Explorer File Explorer MSN Messenger Terminal Services
Calculator Jawbreaker Solitaire Voice Recorder Pictures There are also some
utilities that Dell placed into the ROM, including Data Backup, Power management
utility, Switcher Bar, Home, and the Dell WLAN Utility. The Data Backup utility
lets you backup all your data or selected PIM databases to a selectable
location. There is no scheduled backup function or more specific data selection,
but it does serve as a basic application to protect your data. You can also
recover from stored backups using this utility. Since Dell included a 624MHz
processor, they also include a Power management utility that lets you take
advantage of this processing power when you desire. As discussed in the hardware
section above you can select three options for managing the processor. The
Switcher Bar can be activated in your System settings and gives you quick access
to your Brightness and Power settings and lets you exit the active program or
all programs. The utility seems quite functional, but I use Pocket Plus 2 for
this functionality. The Home feature Dell includes is similar to the one found
on the Axim X5, and it serves as an application launcher similar to what you
find on Palm Powered devices. I use Spb Pocket Plus's Today screen plug-in and
did not use Home very much. The Dell WLAN Utility is actually quite
feature-packed, and allows you to fully manage your 802.11b wireless
connections. You can enable or disable the radio from the utility, although you
cannot enable the radio without first having pressed the hardware button and
turned on the radio initially. You can troubleshoot your connections, test out
links, and perform other wireless network diagnostics from within the WLAN

management Advanced network management You may have noticed that Microsoft
Reader is not one of the applications included in the ROM of the device. When
the Dell X30 was released there was not yet a version available that supported
the landscape mode on Second Edition devices, and that may have contributed to
this lack of Reader on the X30 High. There is now a version of Reader that works
in landscape mode (as we blurbed about in early July ), and it will be
interesting to see if future Second Edition devices include it in the ROM. I
prefer not to have it in ROM since Microsoft often updates it anyway with new
DRM features and requires the user to then put the update into RAM. I prefer to
put Reader in the usable ROM area so I'm able to update it without having two
versions on my device. Dell is not known for including a lot of extra
applications like HP does with most of its iPAQ models, as can be seen on the
following list showing some of what is included on the Companion CD : Microsoft
ActiveSync 3.7.1 Outlook 2002 Dell Diagnostic Utility Resco Picture Viewer Trial
versions of several utilities, games, and applications including, Resco File
Explorer, Links, Calligrapher, Total Remote, and more. Since I did not receive a
Companion CD, I was unable to evaluate the functions in the Dell Diagnostic
Utility. Trial versions are good for new PDA buyers to get a feel for what is
out there, but I also think it needs to be made clear that the software is
indeed only a trial so as not to confuse the new user. Experiences with Windows
Mobile 2003 Second Edition Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition updates include:
VGA 640x480 resolution support Native landscape/portrait modes Improved screen
formatting in Internet Explorer Transcriber update that now allows for custom
gestures to launch applications and insert custom text Custom text sizing allows
you to choose from 5 sizes Icon and naming changes throughout the device and
applications In addition to the great specifications of the X30, I wanted to
really check out the improvements made in Windows Mobile Second Edition. The VGA
support requires hardware with a VGA display, and we may see that coming from
Dell in the future--we do know that one iPAQ will be out soon with this display.
I was very interested in the native landscape support that could be performed on
the fly without requiring a soft reset, and I found myself using it all the time
on the X30 for checking e-mail and surfing the Internet. Remapping the left
hardware button like I mentioned above was the smartest thing I could have done,
or else you have to go to Start > Settings > System > Screen > General and then
tap right- or left-handed landscape and then tap OK . 6 or 7 screen taps to
rotate or one button press--the decision was easy. The current issue that
Microsoft has with the landscape mode is that the text entry methods mess things
up in a big way by taking away almost half of the display. MS or third-party
developers need to come up with something like MessagEase on my Tungsten T3,
where the input panel is stacked vertically and off to the right or left side of
the display. I avoided entering text in landscape mode unless I was using an
external keyboard. Now this is where landscape and an external keyboard almost
takes away the advantages of an integrated keyboard on a Handheld PC. I used my
Think Outside and Targus IR keyboards to write documents in landscape mode with
Pocket Word. portrait/landscape controls Portrait and landscape control screen
Pocket /Excel in landscape mode Excel in landscape mode surfing in landscape
Surfing PDAGeek in landscape mode I also change the text size on the device to
make it a bit smaller since I do have good eyesight with my glasses on and like
to see more on the display. In the Settings > System > Screen utility you can
choose from 5 different sizes. The smallest size is really unreadable on these
QVGA displays, and may work better on VGA devices. The largest text size may
help those with poor vision, but be aware that this only changes the text size
in selected programs like Today , Messaging , Calendar , and Tasks . It doesn't
change the text in Notes , Pocket Word , Pocket Excel , and others since the
text in these programs can be zoomed in or resized for better readability. text

small text The web page formatting of Pocket Internet Explorer has improved
quite a bit, and you now have three choices when surfing on your device. You can
choose One Column, Default , or Desktop layouts, and I generally went with One
Column to eliminate any side-to-side scrolling. There are other features I like
to see when browsing, such as full-screen view, button mapping, and multiple
webpages, so I use PIEPlus (see my review ) to get these with Internet Explorer.
The last major update in Windows Mobile Second Edition that I used regularly
while evaluating the X30 was the new functionality built into Transcriber , the
handwriting recognition input method included with Windows Mobile devices. I
have always installed Calligrapher in the past because it has a better
recognition engine and allows you to create custom on-screen gestures to launch
applications, insert custom text, and perform other functions. I was happy to
see Microsoft add the custom gesture--or shorthand--functionality to
Transcriber, and I think this can be a powerful tool if a user investigates what
it really can do. I have set up gestures to launch common applications I use
that I can't map to hardware buttons. For example, if I write a "w" on my
display when I am not inputting text, Pocket Word will be launched; I also use
an "e" for Excel and "i" for Internet Explorer. Microsoft has also updated the
Transcriber Options interface, and in my opinion it is much more user friendly.
There are more ink color options, and custom dictionaries can be added as well.

Wi-Fi capabilities, I found myself pulling out the X30 when I wanted to do a
quick check of my e-mail around the house or if I wanted to do a little mobile
Web surfing. A fellow vanpool rider, Scott , purchased an Axim X30 after owning
an Axim X5, and he seems quite happy with it, too, except for the poor battery
life. I think we will consistently find battery life is the weak point in PDAs
until serious improvements are made in battery design. The Dell Axim X30 is a
screaming machine, and I have to applaud Dell for being the first out of the
gate with a device running WM2003 Second Edition that is extremely well priced.
You really cannot complain about Pocket PC devices being out of a reasonable
price range with the Low model starting at only $199 and when for $150 more you
get dual wireless, double the processor speed, and double the memory capacity.
The X30 High is a winner, and should do quite well in today's market while
requiring HP to think about its pricing scheme. Ratings Defense I give the Dell
Axim X30 High 4.5 Geekheads for Quality since it feels very solid, has a super
fast processor and dual integrated wireless radios and a bright display and a
comfortable stylus, and only suffers a bit with battery life and a blocky form
factor. For Geekness I also award the X30 High 4.5 Geekheads, and I attribute
that to the high powered specifications at an incredible price point. The
industrial look of the device may also be considered geeky. An improvement in
the way the wireless radios are managed and more included software would bump it
up to 5 Geekheads. Because of how pleased I was with this third-generation Axim
that is priced within reach of most consumers. I am also awarding the Dell Axim

The Proporta aluminum case for Dell’s Axim is over-all a great investment for
any Axim owner. It is stylish and sleek, provides great protection for the
device, and still gives adequate access to the unit. The case is not much bigger
than the Axim itself, which was convenient, and it hardly weighs anything, an
additional convenience. I have gotten a number of compliments from my co-workers
on how nice the case looked: it’s brushed aluminum style is very sleek and
attractive. image The case is sturdy. I often put the unit in my back pocket,
and I’ve never been concerned about damaging the Axim. The fact that the
interior of the unit is padded provides a nice snug fit for the Axim, protecting
it from scratches and from bouncing around too much. One point for improvement
might be to pad the lid where it rolls over at the top, since I have sometimes
been concerned about scratches from that area because it is unpadded. image This
case provides a great deal of access to the Axim, without needing to take it
out. I am impressed that I am able to access every function except the
application buttons, D-Pad, and power button while the case is closed. Some nice
touches are that the power port and sync port are available, and that there is
even a small port for the speaker, while the lid is closed. However, I wish that
the access port for the rocker and record button was a little larger in the
length toward the SD access port, as it was a bit difficult to fully manipulate
the rocker with my largish thumb. In addition, the lid style makes it
uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time. The lid hinge is on the
right, and requires the user to hold the case with finger tips only on the right
side while the lid is open. I will take the Axim out of the case, or lay it flat
to do any prolonged text writing entry. Overall, I feel that this is a wonderful
addition to my Axim. Despite some small inconveniences regarding access, and the
need for padding on the lid of the unit, I feel that this is a huge improvement
over the case that comes with the Axim from Dell. Jason Killian Guest Reviewer
Editors Note: I echo Jason's comment on the hinge and how it is difficult to
hold for long periods of time with the lip open. That issue in not exclusive to
Proporta but to all aluminum and hard shell cases for PDA's. What they need to
develop is a double hinge that allows the lid to fold back behind the unit. If
you take a look at the iPAQ Style Pack cases and the rubber hinge you will get
the idea of what I am talking about. In a hard case it would be an armadillo
looking hinge and make the unit far more conformable to use for extended periods
of time. I plan on adding this editorial note to all future PDA hard case
reviews until someone comes up with a manufacturing solution. Email Print

money this is a great case with high protection value. It does have the dreaded
velcro connector, however, if you are careful, you can avoid this by just
setting your visor or palm in there without having to attach it with sticky
stuff. Also, in high enough quantities, you can talk to them about doing custom
fabric covers. I'd bet that sports fiends can get large batches for clubs and
companies. They rate us "Really Cool"...their second highest rating! **

Pocket PC Title: Bellagio Leather Axim Case Review: If you have a cradle for
your Axim, whenever you get a case, you must remove your Axim from it to sync.
This can become very annoying and may even ruin your case over time. Bellagio
has found a solution to this. Appearance: The Bellagio case looks like any other
solid black leather case. There is a small Bellagio logo on the front and that
is about it. No colored stitching or anything. On the back there is a silver
button/clip which you use to close the case. Pretty Standard. This case is made
out of quality leather. The Front of the case is soft, which is great for the
screen and to just carry it around. Slots and Openings: The Bellagio case
features a CF/Headphone opening at the top. This is very accessible and is great
if you want to use WiFi or a GPS. On he inside there are 2 SD card slots, and 2
Credit card slots. On the actual Axim part, there is an opening which exposes
your buttons, D-Pad and bottom of the Axim. The problem with this is that the
case fits in such away that the buttons are not easily accessible. The top 2
buttons are partly covered or are just too close to the lining of the case. Also
the power button is obstructed by the lining of the case. On the side of the
case you have access to the SD card slots, Joggle switch and Record button. The
Soft-Reset button is covered. Features: This case has the ability to fit into
your cradle, which is very useful. This is don't by a flap at the bottom of the
case. This flap lifts up, making you Axim fit into the cradle. This flap does
not look that great on the case though. Conclusion: This case is great if you
want it to fit into the cradle, but as a standard case; I would not go with the

Dell Axim[/URL] case review I think there are four main points to consider when
evaluating a case to purchase. Usability, looks, quality, and value. I will give
you my thoughts on each, and show you a few pictures to illustrate this as well.
USABILITY I find the Covertec case very effective to use. If you are worried
that being only a half slipper the Axim my not be held in place secure enough,
don’t be. If you have small hands like myself then you probably find that cases
tend to add an uncomfortable amount of width, and bulk to it making you PPC
uncomfortable to hold. With the half slipper this does not happen, yet it is
still held in place quite adequately. There is enough internal structure to the
case to protect the PPC if dropped. Although with the half slipper some may
think there is not as much protection as with some other cases. For me, my main
protection concern is the screen. The inner stiffener of the lid does that very
well. The above picture shows several things quite well. First, it shows how the
magnetic catch works. Personally I would have done away with the tongue
altogether and placed magnets on the front of the case. I see little benefit in
going with magnetic closure, and still keeping the somewhat awkward tongue. I
find they catch on pockets, and add bulk. Next in the usability department are
the pockets on the inside of the lid. Placement of these pockets has been well
thought out. The pockets for the SD cards are large enough for them to
completely hide the card. If you do this it is very difficult to remove them. If
you leave them protruding slightly they are positioned so that they won’t touch
the screen without some direct pressure. The slipper adds enough bulk at that
point that it raises the lid off the screen. There are three slots for credit
cards, or CF cards. I doubt you will get more than one CF card in at a time
though. These are also well placed so that the cards touch the buttons, not the
screen. This should not be a problem. I think it is good advice to never have
your device turn on with any button pushes. Unless, you like dead batteries. I
keep my WiFi card in one of these slots. There are cutouts for the headphones,
charging, and sync cables. No you cannot put it in the cradle while in the case,
but as I said you could use a sync cable. The SD slot, toggle lever, and record
button are all open. However to do a soft reset you need to slip the Axim out of
the slipper a bit. Not a big deal unless you only have one good hand. :) Because
of the cutout for the headphone I don’t think it would be possible to modify
this case with a slot for a WiFi card. It wouldn’t leave much leather to hold
the lid on. Covertec does not offer an option for a belt clip with this case. A
bit of a negative in the usability department I think. LOOKS The axim case is
available in three colors, black, brown, and red. The stitching is in a
contrasting beige, which gives it a distinctive classy look. The cut and shape
of the case fits well with the Axim. It’s made to fit for sure. It does not look
bulky or awkward. The leather has a nice look and feel to it, and has the
Covertec logo stamped into the lower right corner of the lid. QUALITY At first
look you can see the quality of this case. The contrasting color of stitching
shows the absolute perfection in the stitching. The feel of the leather is quite
soft, yet there is a kind of industrial look, and feel to it. There is a
stiffener in the lid, and the back that gives it quite a bit of rigidity, which
I think is where the industrial thought comes from. Since cases are meant to
protect I guess this is a good thing. I have not had this case anywhere near
long enough to pass full judgment on its durability. I can say that I have never
had a case that has inspired a feeling of durability like this one though. VALUE
At forty bucks USD I give this case full marks for value. It does pretty much
all a case of this type is supposed to do. It is very usable. It looks great.
The quality is undeniable, and it is reasonably priced. CONCLUSION If I were
designing this case I would lose the magnetic tongue, and simply place magnets
on the face. I would also make a bit of a contour cut in the side of the slipper
to allow for an easier soft reset. Plus I would offer a belt clip option. Other
than that I wouldn’t change anything. It is a great case in all departments. One
piece of advice. If your spouce happens to have a PPC as well you better buy
two........my wife stole this one, and won't give it back. I guess I'm going to
have to call Covertec and get another one for myself. :) Dave Evans Hits: 271
