Advertising Aximsite Sponsors Reviews Home > Dell Axim x3 : RhinoSkin Aluminum
Case Reviewer : Chris Leckness, Aximsite / iPaqHQ Owner Date : December 16, 2003
Developer/Vendor : RhinoSkin Price : $34.95 Rating : 3.5 out of 5 Dell Axim™ X3
Aluminum HardCase Durable, Lightweight Protection for Your Axim X3 100% anodized
aluminum Padded neoprene interior protects screen and function buttons Access
cutouts for sd/mmc slot, stylus, IR and hotsync ports, speaker and headphone
jack Molded case makes it rigid to protect against twisting, bending and shocks
SD card storage integrated into front cover Rhinoclip™ removable post and belt
clip system Summary You want tough protection to minor dents and dings? You got
it! Want a stylish looking, hi-tech looking case? You got it! Want something to
protect your x3 from falls? Well, maybe... I was not daring enough to try. The
RhinoSkin Aluminum Axim x3 case is rugged, lightweight, and stylish looking. I
am afraid it more suited for carrying in a backpack or purse than wearing on
your hip though. As you can see this is a prototype case (no logo) There are
cutouts for all major buttons and openings. There are metal strips that kind of
act like springs behind the axim to push it into a nice tight fit. This is great
and keeps the unit for jiggling around inside the case. There are cutouts for
all major buttons and openings, but the cutout for the sync connector is not
sufficient. You can not sync with a cradle or with the supplied power connector.
You have to remove your x3 from the case. As you can see in the above picture,
the unit is slid down into the case from the top. The case opens from the left
to expose the screen and controls. When closed, most of the x3 is not exposed.
On the top there is a lip that prevents the x3 from sliding up. Oh, for those
that are wondering, this case will accommodate an x3i also. The inside of the
case is lined with a black padded neoprene to protect the x3 from shock and
protects the buttons. There are two plastic SD card holders inside the lid. The
SD cards are held securely in place by small rails that line up with the cards
perfectly. The only complaint I have is that you must place them in the slot
face down, making any labels useless. Ignoring the scratches and dents, you can
see the cutout for the scroller, headphone jack, and record button. The quality
of the case was fairly impressive. It is very light, but strong aluminum that is
protective, but fairly easy to bend. When I first got the case, the cover opened
up whenever it felt like it. After inspection, I noticed that the case was out
of alignment a bit. A minor tweaking of the cover fixed this and when I closed
the cover, it stayed closed. x3 in the RhinoSkin Case Wanna wear the case? The
RhinoSkin cases now comes with a removable post that allows you to use a belt
clip. I am torn about this addition. If you remember, I was a tester a while
back with the x5 case and brought to their attention that the post would work
itself loose after some time. No matter how hard you torque it down, it still
came loose. They decided to fix this and added a nylon washer that seems to have
solved this problem. I carried this case on my belt for a few weeks and it never
loosed up. The reason I still do not recommend this case as a daily belt case is
that it is awkward when you sit down and the clip allowed Murphy's Law to
happen. Somehow the clip would release the post when I was sitting down. If you
look close at the bottom right of the case in the picture below, you can see
what the bottom left of my Axim could look like, This case took its fair share
of abuse over that time period. The back of the closed case. Notice the post. If
you look close you can see the nylon washer too. Conclusion Everyone knows that
RhinoSkin puts out some great cases, this is not news. I can say with out
hesitation that this case is no letdown. It is everything that owners that buy
RhinoSkin cases demands. An attractive case with superior protection. Other than
not being able to connect a charger to the x3 without removing from the case,
there are no serious design flaws I obsevred. For $35, you can buy a serious
case to protect your investment. So if you need a case to throw in your purse,
go get one today! Pros : Protective High Quality Attractive SD Holders Cons :
Clip System not the best Having to remove from case to sync or charge [ Home ]

Home > Dell Axim X3 : DS International Metal By Gigi Hsueh ( Gigi ) Content
Writer February 17, 2004 Developer/Vendor : DS International ( http://www.notestation.com/
) Price : US$29.00 Rating (out of 5): From the makers of the popular Holster for
the Axim X5 comes an aluminum case for the Axim X3 and X3i. Made from anodized
aluminum and neoprene and weighing 1.6 ounces, this case does a great job at
making your X3/X3i look great while protecting it. According to the DSI website,
"the new aluminum Axim X3 case from DSI combines functionality with sleek
design. Building on the same premis (sic) that made the Axim Holster incredibly
popular, the Axim X3 aluminum case is PERFECTLY formed to fit your X3. With
speaker cutouts, power slots, an SD card holder inside, it protects your X3
while providing practical functionality." Package Contents 1 Dell Axim X3
Aluminum Case Testing Environment The DSI case was tested for several days with
a Dell Axim X3i at work and at home. It was carried in a purse. Evaluation a)
Initial Impressions: When I first received the DSI case, I was quite impressed
by its stunning looks and quality. The shell is made from a sturdy anodized
aluminum which did not bend with applied force, and the inside is lined with
neoprene to absorb shocks and to protect from scratches. My X3i easily slipped
in between the metal clips and fit snugly and securely. The case was held shut
by a sturdy clasp, and when closed, my Axim did not move around at all. In fact,
the case fit so well that I could not see any light from the sides of the case
when the blacklight was on! Although I was very pleased with the overall design
of the case, I was disappointed to find that the wifi antenna was not protected.
While I was transporting my Axim in my purse, I made extra care not to put it
near any keys or sharp objects. To be fair, however, there may be occasions in
which wifi needs to be accessed while the Axim is enclosed in the case. The case
is not designed to accommodate the extended battery. Figure 1. Front view Figure
2. Rear view Figure 3. Inside the case. Note the positioning of the SD card. b)
Functionality: The DSI case features openings for the power button, microphone,
speaker, reset button, jog dial, audio jack, and the sync port. The stylus, SD
slot, IR port and wifi antenna are also accessible because of the open top
design. The larger openings on the top (stylus, SD slot, IR port and wifi
antenna), bottom (sync port) and side (jog dial and audio jack) provide good
access to the controls, including the Dell adapter for the power cable. It
should be noted, however, that the sync port opening is not centered. The Dell
adapter fit without any difficulties, but had a tighter fit on one side. As I do
not own a sync cable, I could not test this opening with other compatible
adapters/cables. The case is not designed for syncing while in the cradle.
Figure 4. Top view showing IR port, SD slot (with card inserted), wifi antenna
and stylus Figure 5. Side view showing opening for jog dial and audio jack.
Figure 6. Bottom view showing sync port. Figure 7. Dell power cable adapter in
the sync port. Note the gap on the right side. The smaller openings for the
microphone, speaker and reset button on the front and back are off-centered
about 1-1.5mm. Fortunately, this misalignment did not prevent access to the
controls. The opening for the power button was also off-centered. However, even
if it were properly aligned, it would still be impossible to access the power
button with one's finger due to its size and distance from the button. If the
purpose of the opening is to allow the user to see the indicator light, then
this is not a problem. If one needs to access the power button then the only way
to do so while the Axim is in the case is to use the stylus. Figure 8.
Misalignment of opening for power button; Figure 9. Misalignment of openings for
speaker and reset button. Inside the case, there is a holder for one SD card. My
SD card was held securely, yet it was easy to slide my card in and out.
Unfortunately, the placement of the SD card is such that the label must face the
case, meaning that the contacts of the card are exposed and susceptible to
damage (see Figure 3). c) Ergonomics: The case opens to the right and stops a
little beyond 180 degrees. I would have preferred a case that opened all the way
around such that the cover could be tucked underneath; I found that with
extended use, my wrist dug into the edges of the cover, creating some
discomfort. This would probably not be an issue for lefties. The weight of the
case also caused some fatigue for me. At 1.6 ounces, it comprises 32% of the
entire weight of the X3i! For those of petite proportions (like me!) and for
those who purchased the X3i/X3 because of the weight (like me!), this is
certainly a consideration. Figure 10. Angle at which case opens. d) Optional
Accessory: An optional belt post and clip is available for $14.99. If this is a
requirement for you, this will add considerable expense to an otherwise
well-priced case. Figure 11. Belt Clip (photo from www.notestation.com ) Closing
Words The DSI aluminum case for the Axim X3/X3i is an attractive, sturdy case
that will protect your Axim well. Although it has some design flaws, it
represents good value for a case of this quality. Pros : Attractive Strong Snug
fit, secure closure Price Cons : Cut-outs don't match up precisely Only one SD
slot SD card placed face down, exposing contacts and hiding labels Unprotected
wifi antenna Optional belt clip is expensive [ Home ] Contact Us - Aximsite -

Home > Dell Axim X3 : Krusell Handit Multidapt By Jordan M. Wigley ( deftech )
Co-Administrator March 15, 2004 Developer/Vendor : Krusell International (
http://www.krusell.se/ ) Price : US$23.99 Rating (3 out of 5): If you're
anything like me, you've been searching for the "perfect" case for your Axim X3
or X3i. While it might not be perfect, Krusell has definately come up with a
decent case at a good price with their Handit Multidapt® leather case for the
Dell Axim X3 and X3i. You can pick it up at most online retailers for slightly
under US$25. The case is made of nappa leather and provides pockets for credit
cards, paper money, and SD memory cards. The case closes securely with a
high-quality snap closure. The Multidapt® system allows you to attach the
included belt clip, as well as various other clips/mounts/etc that are available
from Krusell. What's In The Package? The package that we received included the
Krusell Axim X3 case, swivel knob, slide swivel clip, and a mini clip. All of
these items can be seen below in Figure 1. I am not absolutely sure, but I
believe that the standard retail package only includes the case, swivel knob,
and swivel clip. I initially found the case to be very appealing, especially for
the price. The quality of the leather is not as good as some of the higher
dollar cases on the market, but at the same time is not bad quality either. The
metal emblem on the front of the case, with the company logo "ghosted" onto it,
is a nice touch that really adds to the overall appearance of the case. Figure 1
- Package Contents How Is The Fit? The first time I inserted my X3i into the
Krusell case, it was a very tight fit making it difficult to remove the X3i.
However, based on my past experiences, this is fairly normal for leather cases
until they get broken in for a few weeks. Also, some of the cutouts did not line
up correctly. I decided to use the case for a few weeks in order to "break it
in" so that I would be able that my review would not falsely hold the new
leather responsible for any flaws in the case. After a few weeks, the leather
became much softer and fit the X3i much better than it had before. However, the
fit was still not great. As you can see in picture to the right, the overall fit
of the case is fairly nice around the screen area, with the Power button and
microphone cutouts lining up perfectly. However, you can also see in that
picture where the bottom button area on the front of the Axim does not fit that
great. The tops of the buttons are slightly touching the leather, which could be
a pain if you play many games that are dependent on the hardware buttons. The
biggest disappointment of this case, in my opinion, is the fact that the Dell
power adapter cannot fit into the connector cutout on the bottom of the case. As
you can see below in Figure 2, the cutout is not quite wide enough for the edges
of the connector to fit into the hole. Because of this, along with the fact that
the bottom of the case has a lot of loose material (can be seen in Figures 3 and
4), the sync connector and/or power connector cannot plug into the Axim while it
is in the Krusell case. The only other big flaw in the case, is that the reset
button is very hard to reach through the cutout on the back of the case (seen in
Figure 5). While the speaker cutout lines up perfectly, the reset button cutout
is slightly off-center. Using a stylus, you can wiggle it around enough to
eventually hit the reset button. However, this requires you to exert a lot of
pressure to reset the Axim, which makes it feel like you're going to cause harm
to either the case or your Axim. Figure 2 - Connector Will Not Fit Figure 3 -
Left View of Case Figure 4 - Right View (Loose Material On Bottom) Figure 5 -
Reset Button Is Misaligned Closing Words Overall, Krusell's Handit Multidapt®
case for the X3 and X3i is on the verge of being an excellent case. If Krusell
can fix the cutouts for the sync connector and reset button, the main problems
with this case will be taken care of. Especially if you are using your Axim in a
variety of environments (belt, car, bike, etc.), the Multidapt® system really
adds a lot of options to this case. For the low price, I feel that this is a
decent case for the budget-minded X3 or X3i owner. Pros : Great price Stylish
appearance Good protection Multidapt® System Cutout for the X3i WiFi antenna
Cons : Sync/power connector doesn't fit through cutout Cutout for reset button
doesn't line up correctly Bottom of case has loose material Leather can
sometimes get in the way of hardware buttons Top-right corner of Axim is fairly
vulnerable if dropped [ Home ] Contact Us - Aximsite - Admin - Mod - Archive -

Home > Dell Axim x3 : RhinoSkin Aluminum Case Reviewer : Chris Leckness,
Aximsite / iPaqHQ Owner Date : December 16, 2003 Developer/Vendor : RhinoSkin
Price : $34.95 Rating : 3.5 out of 5 Dell Axim™ X3 Aluminum HardCase Durable,
Lightweight Protection for Your Axim X3 100% anodized aluminum Padded neoprene
interior protects screen and function buttons Access cutouts for sd/mmc slot,
stylus, IR and hotsync ports, speaker and headphone jack Molded case makes it
rigid to protect against twisting, bending and shocks SD card storage integrated
into front cover Rhinoclip™ removable post and belt clip system Summary You want
tough protection to minor dents and dings? You got it! Want a stylish looking,
hi-tech looking case? You got it! Want something to protect your x3 from falls?
Well, maybe... I was not daring enough to try. The RhinoSkin Aluminum Axim x3
case is rugged, lightweight, and stylish looking. I am afraid it more suited for
carrying in a backpack or purse than wearing on your hip though. As you can see
this is a prototype case (no logo) There are cutouts for all major buttons and
openings. There are metal strips that kind of act like springs behind the axim
to push it into a nice tight fit. This is great and keeps the unit for jiggling
around inside the case. There are cutouts for all major buttons and openings,
but the cutout for the sync connector is not sufficient. You can not sync with a
cradle or with the supplied power connector. You have to remove your x3 from the
case. As you can see in the above picture, the unit is slid down into the case
from the top. The case opens from the left to expose the screen and controls.
When closed, most of the x3 is not exposed. On the top there is a lip that
prevents the x3 from sliding up. Oh, for those that are wondering, this case
will accommodate an x3i also. The inside of the case is lined with a black
padded neoprene to protect the x3 from shock and protects the buttons. There are
two plastic SD card holders inside the lid. The SD cards are held securely in
place by small rails that line up with the cards perfectly. The only complaint I
have is that you must place them in the slot face down, making any labels
useless. Ignoring the scratches and dents, you can see the cutout for the
scroller, headphone jack, and record button. The quality of the case was fairly
impressive. It is very light, but strong aluminum that is protective, but fairly
easy to bend. When I first got the case, the cover opened up whenever it felt
like it. After inspection, I noticed that the case was out of alignment a bit. A
minor tweaking of the cover fixed this and when I closed the cover, it stayed
closed. x3 in the RhinoSkin Case Wanna wear the case? The RhinoSkin cases now
comes with a removable post that allows you to use a belt clip. I am torn about
this addition. If you remember, I was a tester a while back with the x5 case and
brought to their attention that the post would work itself loose after some
time. No matter how hard you torque it down, it still came loose. They decided
to fix this and added a nylon washer that seems to have solved this problem. I
carried this case on my belt for a few weeks and it never loosed up. The reason
I still do not recommend this case as a daily belt case is that it is awkward
when you sit down and the clip allowed Murphy's Law to happen. Somehow the clip
would release the post when I was sitting down. If you look close at the bottom
right of the case in the picture below, you can see what the bottom left of my
Axim could look like, This case took its fair share of abuse over that time
period. The back of the closed case. Notice the post. If you look close you can
see the nylon washer too. Conclusion Everyone knows that RhinoSkin puts out some
great cases, this is not news. I can say with out hesitation that this case is
no letdown. It is everything that owners that buy RhinoSkin cases demands. An
attractive case with superior protection. Other than not being able to connect a
charger to the x3 without removing from the case, there are no serious design
flaws I obsevred. For $35, you can buy a serious case to protect your
investment. So if you need a case to throw in your purse, go get one today! Pros
: Protective High Quality Attractive SD Holders Cons : Clip System not the best

Home > Dell Axim X3 : Vaja 966 By Lawson Culver ( aardWolf ) Moderator February
25, 2004 Developer/Vendor : Vaja ( http://www.vajacases.com/ ) Price : US$55.90
+ Rating (out of 5): It is a fact all of us are different and because of that we
all have our own tastes. That’s why Vaja has renewed the leather cases concept
once again. Our exclusive Custom service will allow you to build the case you
want by choosing from a huge selection of leather textures, colors and
personalization options to fit your needs in a unique way. This extraordinary
service is applicable both to our Classic and I-Volution models. These
not-in-stock cases will be especially handcrafted just for you upon your
customized preferences. If this isn’t enough and you want to be really
exclusive, we also give you the possibility to personalize it even more by
engraving your name onto it. Your life is unique. You are unique. Your
custom-made case will be unique too. Package Contents 1 Custom-made Vaja Case
for the Dell Axim x3 (not x3i) Product card with unique ID number Testing
Environment This case was tested at home and in the office, both in my pants
pocket and a coat pocket. First Impressions When I opened up my new case, the
first thing I noticed was the smell... It smells like a fresh pair of leather
shoes. The smell isn't really that potent, but I have a sensitive nose (and
leather is a good smell.) Figure 1. Note the plastic ID card. On the back is a
unique ID number. Options The Vaja cases for the x3 come in tons of options.
From the product page, you can choose from snap closure or magnetic closure, and
embossed or non-embossed. You can get a black on black case with or without a
belt clip for immediate delivery, but any other options require a 30-day build
time. I got mine 21 days after I ordered it. The embossed cases come in 7
different solid colors, while the non-embossed case comes in 11 different
combinations of two-toned leather. You can choose to have your case with or
without belt clip, cushioning in the flip part, and 2 SD slots. You can also
choose to have the leather lining on the inside match the lining on the outside
for an extra charge. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can even get a
matching pouch for your cell phone or have your name and company logo printed on
the inside. My case was built using two-tone leather with no SD slots, no
cushioning in the flip part (to keep it thin), and no place for a belt clip.
Review I inserted the Axim into the case, and it was a very snug fit (but not
too snug.) One of the major reasons I bought this case is that with the x3/x3i
combo cases, there is a cutout for the WiFi antenna. I have an x3, and I didn't
want to have that small cutout that comes on all x3/x3i combo cases. This case
is custom-fitted for the x3, so everything fits perfectly. As you'll see in
figures 3 and 4 below, there are cutouts for all of the major parts you need
access to. You may notice that the cutout for the reset button is a bit out of
place. Since the case is made of leather, I just readjusted the case so that it
fit perfectly. Figure 2. Front view of the case. Figure 3. Cutouts for the
speaker and the soft reset button. Figure 4. Cutout for the sync cable. In
figure 5 below, you'll see that the two "shoulder" buttons on the x3 for
recording and opening the media player (the same button as the wireless button
on the x3i) are covered up by the case. Vaja has imprinted the logo for each
button directly on the leather, and using the button works easily by simply
pressing on that part of the case. In my opinion that is much better than having
a separate cutout for the button. The Vaja cases are front-flip cases, so there
is no problem with the cover getting in the way. I'm left handed, and that was a
big deal for me with the side-flip cases. You can see a close-up of one of the
magnets used in figure 6. The leather appears to be slightly darker there, but
that is the major point of friction between the two halves of the case, so that
is expected with soft leather. Figure 5. View with the case open. Figure 8.
Magnet on inside of case. The x3 can be charged and synced while in the case
using the travel sync cable. I have yet to see a decent case that will allow you
to use the cradle, as the fit is just too tight. When the sync cable is plugged
in, the plastic part of the cable covers the entire cutout. There is no gap, so
the leather was cut to the exact size. Figures 6 and 7 show the relative
thickness with the Vaja case compared to the thickness of the x3 by itself. As
you can see, it adds very little width to the product. It fit in my pants pocket
quite nicely, but I prefer to keep it in my coat pocket where there is more
room. Notice in figure 7 how the front of the case isn't closed all the way. The
leather is pliable, so you can shape it and make it fit closer. The front still
will not touch because of the size of the magnets. I do not know if this is the
case with the snap cover. Figure 6. Side view without case Figure 7. Side view
with case. Closing Words Overall, this is a very high-quality device. The ID
card that comes with it gives you the Vaja lifetime warranty on workmanship.
This is the only case I have seen for the x3 exclusively that doesn't have the
cutout for the x3i (although Vaja is working on a case with a cutout.) The price
ranges from $55 for a basic model to well over $100 for a completely tricked
out, custom-made model. For a reference point, mine cost $75 before shipping. If
you want one of the best quality leather cases that money can buy, I'd recommend
going with this one. If you just want something to protect your Axim, you should
save your money and get a cheaper case. Pros : Excellent quality and
craftsmanship Total customization Perfect fit No cutout for x3i antenna - (great
for x3 users) Cons : Price Front of magnetic case doesn't close all the way [

Home > Dell Axim x3i : Handheld Planet\'s Dell Axim X3i Case By Pete Bradley (
SilentKnight ) Moderator January 21, 2004 Developer/Vendor : Handheld Planet (
http://www.handheldplanet.net ) Price : US$34.95 Rating (out of 5): Package
Contents 1 - Dell Axim X3i Leather Case (Black) 1 - Belt clip Introduction
(Excerpts from company website) The Axim X3i case from Handheld Planet is a high
quality leather case that features 1.7 mm stitching and chamois lining. The case
design has cut-outs for nearly all features of the Axim X3i. You can choose from
several different types of leather: Black Leather (as pictured), Supple Cognac
Leather, Black Ostrich Leather and Cognac Ostrich Leather. Their website does
not yet offer pictures of these other styles (at time of this review). You can
also choose from an optional " UltraClip " belt clip for an extra $5.00. The
cases use a standard snap closure. Evaluation I tried the case out on a normal
day to see how it performed under everyday conditions. The case came with an
optional swivel belt clip made by " UltraClip ". I usually carry my Axim in my
pocket but throughout the day I used the belt clip. The belt clip worked out
rather well and my Axim did not get in the way. The case fit snug around the
Axim and I felt it was well protected in the case. The general look of the case
is stylish, and the leather appears to be high quality. A small portion of the
inside features a patterned design, while the rest features chamois lining.
Handheld Planet boasts that their cases are slim but in my opinion the case is
bulkier than others I have used, such as the Sena for the Axim X5. The case
features cut-outs for nearly every part of the Axim that needs access. Most of
the cut-outs line up perfectly with all the features of the Axim. However the
case has a problem with the cut-out for the bottom port. The cut-out is not
large enough for the standard AximX3 connector to fit flush against the Axim.
The case also slightly covers up the microphone, which does not cause a problem
for me, but may for a user that records frequently. The inside of the case has
pockets for two SD cards, two credit cards and a pocket for money. The two SD
card pockets are not very secure and only covers the cards half way. This causes
a lot of concern for me because the cards slip out easily and may get lost.

the flaws, I think the price is set too high. Pros : Excellent leather quality

Cons : Cut-out for the bottom port is too small Insecure SD pocket Microphone is
slightly covered Does not allow extended battery [ Home ] Contact Us - Aximsite

Home > Dell Axim X3i : Vaja X3i Case By Gigi Hsueh ( Gigi ) Content Writer April

website actually features 2 credit card pockets and no SD holders Testing
Environment This product was tested over a period of a week at home and at work.
It was carried using the belt clip and in a purse. Evaluation a) Initial
Impressions: Having never owned a high end leather case for my Axim, I really
didn't know what to expect from a Vaja case. Although I knew Vaja's reputation
for quality, I could not imagine how any case would be worth over $60 USD. After
having tested the case for a week, however, I came to appreciate a Vaja case for
its overall quality and craftsmanship. The case that I reviewed was made of an
elegant aniline leather that was polished yet revealed natural grain. The
leather used was thin and supple resulting in a very slim-fitting case. It was
very easy to slip my X3i into the case; the fit was snug yet it was also very
easy to remove the X3i for syncing in the cradle. Hopefully, with wear, the
leather will not stretch too much such that the fit will become compromised. On
the front of the case was a metal Vaja emblem which added a nice finishing touch
(see Figure 1). Figure 1: Front view Figure 2: Rear view. The metal knob on the
top is part of the Ultra Clip™ Belt Clip and the stainless steel mesh at the
bottom left protects the speaker. Note the absence of a soft reset cutout.
Figure 3: The inside of the case. b) Functionality: The Vaja case I reviewed
featured a magnetic closure and an Ultra Clip™ belt clip. There were also
cutouts for the earphone jack and scroll dial, as well as the sync port. The
side function buttons (i.e., wifi button, voice record button) were accessed
using a "push through" system, meaning that the user had to push through a
marked portion of the leather to access the controls. The stylus and antenna
were exposed even when the case was closed because of the partial open-top
design of the case. There was also a stainless steel mesh cover for the speaker
at the back, as well as two Secure Digital card holders and a separate pocket
that could accommodate about 10 business cards. An opening for the reset button
was conspicuously absent. Figure 4: Side view of case. Note the opening for the
scroll dial and audio jack. The case provided easy access to the power button,
the four main control buttons (i.e., Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, Home), the two
side buttons for wifi and the voice recorder, the earphone jack, the scroll dial
and the speaker. Initially, I had been leery of the "push through" design for
accessing wifi and the voice recorder. However, because there is an indentation
in the leather where the buttons reside, it was easy to locate the buttons. Of
course it required more pressure to depress the buttons, but within a short
period of time, I got used to it. I was, however, concerned that with time, the
leather in these parts would wear out prematurely. Figure 5: "Push through"
system of accessing side function buttons. Note the indentation of the leather
to help the user locate the button easily. The semi open-top design of the case
exposed the wifi antenna and allowed access to the stylus even when the case was
closed. The advantage of this design is that the user can use wifi while the
case is closed (e.g., for listening to streaming audio, etc.) and be able to put
the stylus back in its slot without the hassle of having to open up the case.
However, the drawbacks include the greater risk of damage to the antenna as well
as the loss of the stylus, especially if the Axim is carried on a belt.
Personally, I would have preferred a case that featured an small oval cutout for
the wifi antenna. Not only would this have protected the stylus and more of the
antenna, it would have also resulted in a stronger hinge for the case. Figure 6:
The opening at the top corner revealing the wifi antenna and the stylus. Another
concern I had with this case was the fact that it lacked an opening to the soft
reset button (See Figure 2). I often soft reset my device, and it was a real
inconvenience to have to take the Axim out of the case every time in order to do
so. Based on my own habits, I would have preferred access to the soft reset
button over access to the stylus when the case was closed; after all, replacing
the stylus only requires opening the cover at most, not removing the entire
device from its case. The SD card pockets were very snug and provided a secure
way of holding flash memory. The top edge of the cards was exposed, but did not
come in direct contact with the screen because of the narrow strip of leather
that rested in between (Figure 8). It should be noted that the SD slots are not
designed to hold oversized SD cards such as SD Bluetooth cards. Figure 7: Two
pockets for Secure Digital cards and one larger pocket underneath for business
cards, etc. Figure 8: A strip of leather prevents the Secure Digital cards from
coming into direct contact with the screen. Although this case provided a cutout
for the sync port, the opening was too small to be able to insert the Dell
adapter securely. I was able to charge my X3i by pushing the adapter into the
port, but the adapter did not lock into place and could easily be disconnected
without depressing the release buttons. A temporary fix to this problem would be
to trim the leather around the opening to enlarge it since there is no stitching
there. However, for a case of this price, this design flaw is very
disappointing. Figure 9 : Cutout for the sync cable. Note how tight the opening
is. c) Degree of Protection: Although the leather used in this case was thin, I
felt that it provided adequate protection under everyday conditions. The cover
was padded and all the stitching was secure and detailed. However, the fact that
the wifi antenna and stylus were exposed was of some concern to me. As well, the
case did not cover the bottom corners of the Axim. I am not sure if this was
done for aesthetic or functional (i.e., to allow for a deeper fit) reasons, but
this increases the risk of at least cosmetic damage to the paint or the black,
plastic edging. Figure 10: The case did not cover the bottom corners of the my
X3i. The magnetic closure consisted of two thin strips of magnets on both sides.
They were remarkably strong as I was able to lift the case (with the X3i inside)
by just holding the top flap. The belt clip provided, the Ultra Clip™, also
appeared to provide a sturdy way to carry my Axim. Made of a a high resistance
plastic with a pin of solid brass, Vaja claims that it can withstand in excess
of 130 pounds in either direction. The swivel mechanism also made the case
comfortable to wear while sitting or standing and provided easy access to my
X3i. When the case was not being carried on a belt, it was easily removable by
turning the case to a 90 degree angle and depressing a release button.
Unfortunately, the metal knob could not be removed and to me this added some
unnecessary bulk and unsightliness to the case when it was not being used with a
belt clip. To be fair, however, Vaja offers a version of this case without the
belt clip option. Figure 11: Ultra Clip™ Belt Clip (photo from www.vajacases.com
) Figure 12: Side view of case with Ultra Clip™ Belt Clip attached. Closing
Words Vaja has continued its tradition of combining fine detail and quality
craftsmanship into this case. Unfortunately, a number of design flaws have
hindered its functionality. Although the case provides adequate protection under
everyday conditions, some vulnerable areas remain exposed. The case also fails
to provide adequate access to some commonly used functions. Pros : Attractive
Fine quality leather and very well crafted Excellent fit & slim design Strong
magnetic closure High quality removable belt clip Cons : Price Very large
opening at the top corner exposing wifi antenna and stylus No opening for soft
reset Cut-out for sync adapter too small to use with Dell adapter Bottom corners

Home > Dell Axim X5: Bullguard Cover #2 By Samantha Robertson (Raynne413)
Moderator February 28, 2004 Product: Bullgaurd Developer/Vendor : Bullgaurd (
dogwithabone.net ) MSRP : US$25.00 Rating (out of 5): The BullGuard is a cover
for your Axim that is handmade by Aximsite Member BullDog. He could not find the
options that he wanted in a case, and didn’t even want a case, just something to
protect the screen of his Axim. So after input from several Aximsite members, he
set out to create his own cover. Soon after posting pictures of the first
prototype, he had several orders. The cover I am reviewing is a new version made
out of clear Kydex (Image 1). This cover is surprisingly well made for being
hand done. There are no rough edges or cut outs. Everything is smooth, and well
done. The cover fits firmly on the Axim when in place, and ships with a
guarantee that if it loosens can you send it back to be redone. Image 1 There is
a cut-out for the power button (Image 3), the main buttons (Image 2), and the
speaker. Personally, I don’t like the button cutouts as I worry that a button
will be pressed accidentally and turn my Axim on when I am unaware. However,
that is what the power options in Settings is for. For those of you that like
using your Axim as an MP3 player, while carrying it in your pocket, this could
be the solution since you have easy access to all buttons, but the screen is
still protected. Image 2 Image 3 I remembered reading that the previous
BullGuard was a bit flimsy, and when taking this out of the package it seemed
this one was too. However, when in place it is surprisingly sturdy. It took A
LOT of pressure on my part to register pressure on the screen with the cover in
place. Unless you plan on stepping on it, you should be fine. If some of you are
obsessive like I am, then another problem could be finger prints. With the clear
cover, finger prints show up very easily, making me constantly want to wipe it
down. This cover does what it is supposed to do. It gives you access to all
buttons, and the scroll wheel, while protecting the screen from scratches while
it is in your pocket. It doesn’t protect the back of the Axim, so if that is
what you want, you should look for a case and not a cover. Pros: Well made
Smooth edges and cut-outs Protects the screen Firm Fit Good Product Guarantee
Light Cons : Shows fingerprints easily More information can be found at

Home > Dell Axim X5: Bullguard Executive Cover By Bas Wijnands, wannahave
November 21, 2003 Developer/Vendor :Dogwithabone( www.dogwithabone.net ) Price :
US$25 Rating (out of 5): The best solution to cover up your screen without
adding any bulk Package Contents 1 Executive screen cover for dell axim x5,
carbon pattern Testing environment Normal use, Used it at home, at college and
watching a football game in a pub :) Installation The only thing that needs to
be done it slip in on the axim De beste stuurlui staan aan wal "de beste
stuurlui staan aan wal" This is one of the most famous dutch idioms...
translated this means something like; the best captians are standing a shore.
Dutch people are known off the fact they're always complaining that they can do
everything better. but a member of aximsite obviously isn't a Dutchie but a good
old American Kevin, a.k.a. Bulldog, couldn't find a case that he really liked so
he made one himself! After opening a thread here at aximsite there immediately
where alot of people that replied they would love a similar case as Bulldog made
for himself. So, what did Bulldog made? He made a sort cover that only protects
the screen, the most fragile part of our axims. you slip the axim in the cover
which doesn't add to the dimensions!! It Barely clears the screen and the two
little flaps hold the axim nice and secure, it is a little flexible but I think
this isn't a problem. This really is the best solution for everybody who wants
to protect their screens and still Be able to carry their axim in almost every
pocket. So as you may notice I really like the Case. It does the job he's
supposed to do very good. To be honest, I wouldn't have chosen for this case if
I was a new axim owner because I am very protective with my axim. But now I have
had my axim for a good 10 months, I loosened up a little bit. I have to say this
case probably made me liked my axim a bit more again because this is the one
case I can put on and still keep my axim in my pocket!!! The cases are all hand
made by Kevin himself and at the moment they are available in a carbon print
(the one I have) and in dark gray one. The best thing of the fact they are all
hand made is that you can totally customize it, If you want a cutout for the
buttons, ask and you will receive, if you don't want a cutout for the mic, ask
and it won't be there! and this is of course one of the pro's! So for anybody
that would like a nice case that only protects the screen and doesn't add bulk
to it, this is the way to go! Bulldog opened a thread here, as I mentioned
before, and any tips&tricks/comments/suggestions can either be pm'ed to bulldog
or posted in the thread, found here: link Closing Words Bulldog did, imho, the
best thing someone can do... He stopped complaining about the fact there aren't
any good cover's for the axim out there, but instead of this he made his own!
the best thing of course is that the good man is willing to make all of us one
for only 25 dollar (including shipping), this is really nice of him of course
and he doesn't make a big profit on them. He is putting alot of his time into
these covers and is always on the lookout for improvements, so please do not
hesitate to contact him if you have a suggestion. I can't wait to see how this
case will develop, there probably will be some changes but I think its great
right now! Pros : -Doesn't add bulk! -Nice looks -ability to customize it Cons :
-the only thing I can think off is the fact it is a bit flexible, so I can touch
the screen when pressed on hard [ Home ] Contact Us - Aximsite - Admin - Mod -

Home > Dell Axim X5: Preview of RhinoSkin Dell Axim X5 Leather FlipCase By Young
Joo ( hesse ) I remember a thread in Aximsite.com's forum discussing about how
many PDA cases each had. While I was reading that thread, I was not surprised by
some users who owned more than two cases. When you first think about it, you
shouldn't really need more than one case. The truth is, though, you are never
satisfied with one case. One case might be useful when you want to throw your
PDA into a very crowded book-bag. That same case, however, might not be slim and
light enough to let you carry your PDA in your pocket. Some of you love having
your PDAs clipped onto your belt so that you can access it anytime you like. So
you look for cases with strong belt-clip system. But the steel tap that sticks
out of back-side of the case could annoy people who never have even thought
about carrying PDAs on their belt. Some love leather cases because of their
flexibility and some love metal cases because of their durability as well as the
shinny metallic silver colors. Why then, you could ask, don't case manufacturers
make "the perfect case" that can be used in all situations by everyone? Why do
we have to buy ten different cases and constantly switch between them? Well, I
would love to answer these questions for you. Trust me. I am with you on this!
But I cannot really tell you that company X is making a case called 'Om' that
will bring us the peace. Instead, I can show you a leather case by Saunders USA
which might bring us a bit closer to that peaceful and wonderful world of
"single case per user." Saunders USA was very kind enough to send us the
pre-production unit of their new RhinoSkin Dell Axim X5 Leather FlipCase. And we
are bringing you the exclusive looks at this new case. They are currently
expecting to ship this case on May 1, 2003. Since the case we received was a
pre-production unit, the final production case might be different slightly.
Saunders USA told us that this was an approved unit and we are assuming that it
won't change a lot. There is one change that will definitely be made to the
final shipping unit and I will talk about that change later. Innovation Leads to
Success As soon as I received the case, I was able to tell right away that
Saunders USA had been listening carefully to the PDA users. The new case
includes two design elements that are very innovative. They couldn't have done
this if they weren't listening to users. These two features will certainly put
Saunders ahead of everyone else when the case ships on May. The first design
element is what they call The Rhino Clip. It is a removable belt clip system.
What it means is that it allows you to use the case with or without the clip
system. If you look at the pictures below, you can see that the steel tap that
sticks out of the backside of case can now be totally removed! The tap is held
in place by a Velcro cover inside the case in default setting. If you would like
to remove it out of your way so that you can hold your PDA more comfortably, all
you have to do is lift up the Velcro cover and pull out the steel tap. It's that
easy. If you later need to attach your Axim on your belt, you just have to
insert the steel tap through the opening and close the Velcro cover. This might
sound like a very trivial feature to some people. However, if you've had a
leather case with those steel taps, you should know how frustrating it is to
hold the case with the metal sticking into your palm. This is certainly a
welcome feature and it will make a lot of people's lives much easier. Click each
image for larger versions. The second feature I noticed was the elastic they
inserted on each side of the case. They added these elastics so that you can use
the case even with the extended battery on. There are many cases that fit too
perfectly to Axim leaving no room for extended battery. I've heard of people
choosing the metal flip-covers instead of more protective cases just because
they could not find the case that will accommodate the size of extended
batteries. This new case will let you use extended battery and still have all
the protections other people have been enjoying. Since I do not have an extended
battery for my Axim, I tried to put extra materials (few cardboard pieces)
between Axim and the back-wall of the case. I was very pleased to see that two
sides stretched out very comfortably with thicker Axim. Click above image for
larger version. Other Features Above two features should be enough reasons to
get one of this new leather cases from Saunders in May. However, there are other
things to consider also. Like other leather cases, this case has several slots
on the flip-top cover for storing various stuffs. The case I received has two
slots for SD cards, two slots big enough to put bills, credit cards or business
cards and a big slot for storing other things like receipts. These slots were
very tight and stiff, however, making inserting and removing items in and out of
those slots a bit difficult. The case has all necessary cut-outs for accessing
every Axim controls but compared to other premium leather cases, these openings
do not align with actual controls perfectly. l am hoping that the final
production unit will be much better. Since this case uses the snap closure
system instead of magnetic closure, it feels a little bulkier. The snap strap
that wraps around the bottom of case contributes a lot to this bulkiness. One
more thing I noticed about this snap strap was that it was not long enough. I
had to pull it with a little force in order to align snaps. I am not sure if the
leather would eventually stretch out a little making this easier. The front-side
of the flip-top cover had a small amount of padding inserted which helps protect
the screen from outside forces. The representative from Saunders said that the
metal RhinoSkin logo would be attached to the front-side of production units. He
also said that the final unit will have a separate stylus holder. Most leather
cases cover the stylus housing with the flip-top cover forcing you to open the
cover just to put the stylus back. I am anxious to see this stylus holder.
Saunders representative I talked to sent me some pictures of their almost final
unit. I cannot guarantee that the shipping unit will look the same but these
pictures should be very close to the final unit. Click above image for larger
version. Future Plans Saunders has been one of a few PDA case makers that always
produce the top of the line PDA cases and I am confident that they will not
disappoint us this time. Aximsite.com will review the final shipping unit when
it becomes available. We will pay close attention to the leather quality as well
as the build quality on that review. Just a few more notes about Saunders USA.
As some of you might already know, Saunders USA is currently working on the
titanium RhinoSkin case. Current RhinoSkin metal case is the same case as metal
cases Innopocket and Proporta (read our review of Proporta case) sell. I think
Saunders USA wants to take the top spot in this very competitive PDA case market
with this another innovative design. We will bring you the full details of the
titanium case when it becomes available. Saunders is also working on modifying
their current metal case. They are putting a new belt-clip system and some
storage area for SD cards. I am excited about these changes. Lastly, I would
like to thank Saunders USA for not only providing the pre-prodction unit
exclusively to Aximsite.com, but also for staying in close touch with me about
their future plans. Many great things are happening with Saunders' case line up.
Be sure to check back often for the latest news of RhinoSkin cases!

Home > Dell Axim X5:Avenues in Leather Pocket PC Leather Carry-All Case Avenues
in Leather Pocket PC Leather Carry-All Case Reviewed By: NMkiD :: Rating: This
is a case I found at Office Max, it was in a hard plastic sealed container
thing, see thu and your not able to open it to try it out. This at first detered
me from getting it but I asked a sales person if I could bring it back, they
said yes, so I said what the hell! This case is designed for an iPAQ, thats how
its labled and advertised. It wasnt in the section where the cases were for show
it was in a cardboard display thing in the general area. Its from a company
called Avenues in Leater, the website is www.avenuesinleather.com however the
product I'm reviewing is not on that website. The case was $40, and leather, it
has 2 zipper pouches, and its not very iPAQ specific, as a matter of fact there
is a similarity in most PDA's button locations so it was not a problem to place
the Axim in it. You can really fill this thing up, I currently have: 1) the Axim
(very nice snug fit, has stretchy fabric to ensure snug fit) 2) a Liknsys CF
card (dosent push on the screen, it sits against the leather section holding in
top of the Axim.) 3) extra stylus 4) MICRO IR Keyboard 5) 3400 extra battery 6)
earbuds 7) sometimes... the USB sync cable, this really stretches it out I like
to fit a lot of things into a small space because I dont like to carry alot and
this is relitevly small for holding so much, it also has the basic case
accessories, room for business cards, small pockets, etc, and actually 3 CF card
holder slots. Now for the pics, well 1 pic actually, its a little big but not
really, just let it load: Add your own review about the product View other

Home > Dell Axim X5:Bellagio Designs Dell Axim X5 Handheld Flip Style Black With
Belt Clip and Handheld Book Model Black Model By Richard Carreras III ( NMkiD )
Product : Bellagio Designs Dell Axim X5 Handheld Flip Style Black With Belt Clip
and Handheld Book Model Black Model Black Developer/Vendor : Bellagio Designs,
LLC ( http://www.bellagiodesigns.com/ ) Price : Flip Style - $39.99, Book Model
- $34.99 Rating : Overview When I recieved both of these cases the first thing I
noticed upon opening the small boxes was how nice they looked. They are very
professional looking. I recieved the Flip Style in Black and the Book Style in
Brown. These cases are very sleek looking with a nice small bellagio metallic
emblem on the front. The Flip Style came with a great belt clip that is very
sturdy and allows for 360 degrees of rotation on your hip. The Flip style case
also has the ability to recharge in the cradle, the black portion of the case
flips back allowing it to fit in the cradle if there is no secondary battery in
the back slot. I also noticed that they both came with a magnetic button closure
which I was unsure of how well it would work, it seemed to not cling too well
and was also very easy to open. It is also good to point out that the controls
are totally exposed and easily accessed in both models (a good thing). click
images for better resolution Using the Cases with my Axim I slipped my Axim,
first into the Flip Style case, to my surprise it was very snug and fit almost
perfectly. There is access to every important function of the Axim while in this
case from the stylus and earphones to the reset button and SD slot. This case
however seemed to expose the sides of the Axim more then I would have wished. In
othe words the Axim was almost totally covered, the screen is very well
protected but the sides are still more exposed. This does however make for a
more sleek, compact look. Face it the more protection, the more bulk you are
carrying around. The Book Style case has the case form factor, it is snug and a
tight fit and this case provides about the case amount of protection but is
meant to be used more casually then the Flip Style which is more for people on
the go who need their Axim on the fly and have quick and easy access to it. The
Book Style is a little more luxurious looking especially in the suede looking
brown color. I wore the Flip Style case to a few conferences I had this year as
well and got several comments on it, people asked if it was for a PocketPC and
they inquired about where they could get one. One thing I did notice about the
belt clip however was that when sitting, sometimes you can inadvertingly press
the release button on the top on the clip with your body and when you sit up the
Axim might fall, however you can usualy hear or feel this happen and it rarely
occurs but is important to be aware of. Conclusion Both cases have a great
design and are really made for two different types of users. The Flip Style for
the more Axim active and the Book Style for the more prefessional casual user.
After having used both cases for a period of time I felt that the Flip Style
case was more of a fit for me; since I always have my Axim at the ready. The
Flip Style's ability to detach the belt clip makes it even more useful for when
its uncomfortable to wear it on your side, for example when in a car where the
seat belt might be in the way. I said that initially this case worried me
because the sides of the Axim appear to be more exposed but there was an
occasion where I dropped my Axim (it wasnt on the clip, shame on me!) and it
fell right onto the concrete. I thought for sure that it was broken, I picked it
up, case still closed, and found no damage whatsoever. This gave me more faith
in these units ability to protect our several hundreed dollar investment and
also gave me more faith in the magnetic buttons ability to cling in tough
situations. Also I did drop just the case once and I got debris in the magnet
area, dirt and other metallic shavings were stuck in the female end and it would
not close after this. There is a quick easy fix however, just get a piece of
tape, put it over the magnets female end and stick a pen or something in there
and let the tape stick to and pick up the debris and it will work as good as new
again. I have also had both of these cases for a time and used them both
extensivly and neither has developed any scrathces or other blemishes. I must
say that Bellagio did the Axim community a great service by creating these
sleek, tough and stylsh cases. click images for better resolution The Score -
