Gadgeteer Hands On Review : Proporta Aluminum Case for the Palm Tungsten | T by Judie Hughes D ate: 02/10/2003 Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Product Requirements: Device: Palm Tungsten | T Update 7/11/03 - See below for details in red. In the past, I have become incredibly spoiled by the offerings from Proporta . This company creates some of the finest aluminum PDA cases available today; they are form fitting, good-looking and very protective. Some of you may have noticed that for the longest time, I didn't have a TT case listed on my diary page. Well, it wasn't for lack of looking...and now I have the case I have been waiting for: the Proporta Tungsten Aluminum Case . Executed as a book-style in a satin titanium finish, the Proporta manages to cover almost every surface of the Tungsten in neoprene lined armor. But before I start talking about the inside, let's talk about the outside... On the lower right of the front flip-cover, is a raised Proporta symbol. This bit of branding is unobtrusive and looks great. The side rear has the " proporta.com " address printed in white. The flip-cover is held in place with a friction clasp, which seems very secure and should not open unintentionally. There are cutouts for the voice-recorder / head-phone jack area, the sync/charging area, and the top of the PDA. When the flip-cover is closed, its curved upper area covers the edge of the TT to the power button. When opened, the cover falls to the right, like an opened book. The cover does not fold to the rear of the PDA, which works fine for me but may bother others. The hinge holding the slip-cover appears to be sturdy and should withstand years of use. As I mentioned previously, the interior of the Proporta is lined in soft neoprene. This not only cushions your TT from fall, but also protects it from scratches. Innopocket version of this case now includes 2 SD card slots in case cover. SD cards slide in easily, but are oriented 'face' down. This seems strange as the card connectors are exposed. It is nice to be able to carry as many as 3 SD cards with you at one time though. You insert the TT by sliding it into the holster portion of the Proporta. The aluminum wraps around the bottom of the PDA and helps to hold it in securely. Of note are the two aluminum clips on the inside rear of the case. These fit into the two clips on the back of the bottom half of the TT, holding the case securely when you slide the top portion of the TT out to access the graffiti area. One thing that I am "iffy" about regarding this case, is that you have to practically remove the TT before you can perform a soft-reset. Since the holster and the clips hold the bottom of the TT so securely, it can be a bit of a pain to slide the PDA in and out. I am constantly loading and removing software from my Tungsten, so this is a bigger problem for me than it might be for others. One other thing that might be a con for many users is that you can't sync the TT with the cradle while it is in the case. I am using a BoxWave miniSync to sync and charge, so this is not a problem for me. The Proporta is officially my favorite Tungsten case. I have mentioned before how much I have always loved small things that have a nice weight to them, and the TT ensconced in this case easily fills the bill. I don't want to make you think that the Proporta turns the TT into an even heavier little stone though, so here are some size comparisons for you to check out... Height Width Thickness Weight Naked Tungsten (w/ PDA Panache Stylus) 4.0" (10.2cm) 2.9" (7.5cm) 0.6" (1.5cm) 5.7 ounces (163g) Tungsten in Proporta (w/PDA Panache stylus) 4.1" (10.5cm) 3.3" (8.4cm) at clasp 0.9" (2.2cm) 7.9 ounces (225g) When the TT is inside the Proporta, I have no reservations about sticking the combo in my rear jeans pocket - the case is that small, and that tough. If you are looking for a very protective yet good-looking case, you should definitely check out the Proporta. Price: $38.00 Pros: Ultimate protection in an attractive package Price is reasonable Cons: Can not use cradle to hot-sync/charge the TT while it is in case No easy access to reset button while TT is in case Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Official Gadgeteer Hands On Review: PDA Pocket Armor Aluminum Hard Cases by Judie Clark and Julie Strietelmeier Last date revised: 06/17/2002 For the Sony CLIÉ 700 Series by Judie Clark Product Requirements: Device: Sony CLIÉ 600, 610, 700, 710, 750, 760 & 770 The PDA Pocket Armor aluminum hard case for the Sony CLIÉ 600 and 700 series is a marvel of precision engineering, and it sets an example of what happens when a company "gets it right." I can honestly say that I have never seen a better looking metal CLIÉ case! Notice the little "bumps" on the front and back - while they are great for helping to give you a solid grip on the case, they also make the Pocket Armor look even more stylized. Similar to a book style case - but infinitely cooler - the top is comprised of aluminum and the back is made of ABS plastic in a matching finish. The inside screen cover is lined in shock-absorbing neoprene for added protection. The CLIÉ fits perfectly into the Pocket Armor, and is held in place by two plastic tabs that fit into the space left when you remove the CLIÉ's stock flip-cover. There is also a tab that fits into the hole to the left of the syncing/charging port. The Pocket Armor opens from the left side, which took me a short while to get used to, but I would imagine that any lefties out there would really like this. I believe that this method is necessary because of all of the buttons and ports on the left side of the CLIÉ: there would simply be no way to place a sturdy hinge on the left side of this case. Once in the case, every one of the CLIÉ's buttons, ports, and other slots is easily accessible, except the hot-sync port. Even though you can easily see it - the two side holes that most cables will clip onto are not accessible, until you pop the CLIÉ free from the bottom of the case. I honestly wish that there was a similar case available for every PDA that I own, as this is definitely the nicest add-on metal case that I have ever had the pleasure of reviewing. Price: $34.00 Available in black, gold, silver, and titanium finishes Pros: Perfect fit with very little added bulk or weight All ports are accessible while PDA is in case Best looking metal cover I have seen for the CLIÉ Cons: None For Palm m500 Series by Julie Strietelmeier Product Requirements: Device: Palm m500, m505, m515 Similar to other metal cases that I've reviewed for the m500 series in the past, the m500 Pocket Armor case is made of aluminum. Available in black, gold, silver, and titanium finishes, I was sent the black version. At 2 oz (55g), this case is strong while still being light weight. Although the case does flex a little bit if you try to twist it, for most people it should be sturdy enough to keep in your back pants pocket. I didn't have a problem using this case with my m505 while putting it in my back jeans pocket. The features on this case are minimal. There is a cutout for the IR port and another for the stylus. Speaking of the stylus, you can even use 3rd party styli such as those from PDA Panache easily with this case. The PDA is held in the case by a flexible plastic rail that fits into the left stylus silo. The rail fits snuggly in the silo, so there is no fear that the PDA will fall off accidentally. The interior of the case is lined with a thin layer of neoprene on both sides. I did find it unusual that both sides of the case had button cutouts in the neoprene lining... The exterior of the Pocket Armor case that I reviewed was a matte or powered black. I found that this finish tended to show fingerprints and grease marks more than I would like. I also personally didn't care for the feel of the case. It sort of has a dry primer paint feel to it. This is very subjective though on my part. It is available in other colors, which is a plus. The case is held closed with a press fit latch. This latch isn't the most secure that I've encountered. I found it easy to open and close which is probably not an entirely good thing... It never came open on its own, but I don't am pretty sure that a short drop to a hard surface might cause the case to fly open. So far, this is my least favorite Palm metal hard case for the m500 series. For the same price, I would be more likely to buy the Innopocket or the Kensington cases due to their more secure latches and overall feel. Price: $29.00 Available in black, gold, silver, and titanium finishes Pros: Rigid protection Cons: Can't easily sync / charge with cradle Latch doesn't feel very secure Black finish shows smudges For Handspring Visor Prism by Julie Strietelmeier Product Requirements: Device: Handspring Visor Prism Visor Prism owners haven't had many choices for hard cases. The Rhinoskin Slider case has been the only one till now. Made of aluminum, the Pocket Armor Visor Prism case is available in black, gold, silver, and titanium finishes. I was sent the black version for review. This case for the Prism is similar to other Palm metal cases in that the PDA is held in the case via a rail which is inserted into the stylus silo. Unfortunately, the rail is made of a flimsy plastic which does not look to be very sturdy. While attached to the case, the Prism can wiggle around in the case which didn't give me a very secure feeling. When the case is open and in use, the Prism lays in the left side. A small cutout with a plastic lens allows access to the IR port. The glue used to affix the lens to the metal was smeared on the outside of my review case. There is also a plastic cap covers the springboard area of the case. This cap can be removed to allow for slightly oversized springboard modules to be used while in the case. This won't help with modules which are thicker than the standard module though. It's only for modules which are taller than the norm. Because the stylus silo is needed to hold the PDA in the case, a secondary stylus holder is built into the right side near the latch. Two metal clips hold the stylus in place. However, you have to be careful how you position the stylus in these clips... If you place the 'flag' part of the stylus pointing to the side, it will cause the case not to close properly. Speaking of keeping the case closed, this case doesn't do that very well at all. I had problems with it popping open all by itself. And if that wasn't bad enough, 9 times out of 10, when I'd open the case the Prism would be stuck face down in the right side of the case. I mainly blame this on the less than efficient way the PDA is held in the case. As it stands, I would not recommend this case for a Visor Prism owner. Spend a few dollars more and go with the Rhinoskin Aluminum slider if a metal case is what you're looking for.. Price: $29.00 Available in black, gold, silver, and titanium finishes Pros: Rigid protection Able to use some oversized springboard modules with this case Cons: Can't easily sync / charge with cradle Latch not secure Attachment method (rail) not very sturdy Let me know your comments on the PDA Pocket Armor Aluminum Cases, and read what others have to say. Since I generally carry around a pack/soft briefcase loaded with my gear and other junk, I place my PDAs into the bag and only carry one around on my belt at a time. I thought the aluminum case would be great for throwing my CLIÉ in my pack and not worrying if I smashed it or dropped my bag. Thomas posted a review of one of these cases for the Palm Tungsten T and was quite pleased with the it. Packaged NX case I was extremely surprised when the package arrived because the case was much lighter than I anticipated. As you know, the CLIÉ NX is a hefty device, and if a case with very little weight can be found then it is much better to carry around. The case is constructed of high quality, aircraft-grade aluminum material and is extremely lightweight, coming in at only about two ounces. The case comes in a nice, formed plastic bubble package, and has directions for placing the CLIÉ in the case. The outside finish closely matches the brushed silver on the CLIÉ and looks wonderful. The corners and curves are smooth and stylish. The hinge is about four inches long and seems very solid. I tried pushing the case together and the aluminum did not get pushed in at all. The case opens to the right like a book, and although the top is a bit unwieldy, I am still able to surf and write comfortably. It is a bit more difficult to use the thumb keyboard, so I take the NX out for longer text entry. Opened case with NX in left side There are openings for the Wi-Fi/CF and Memory Stick cards, as well as an opening so you can use the camera in the case. All side functions on the left side of the device are accessible, yet there is still enough material to provide strength and protection. The back also has a fine mesh screen over the speaker, allowing for clear sound through the case. The bottom is open to allow you to sync via the cable and access the stylus. The only improvement I would recommend is placing a small hole to access the reset button. Since I review so many software titles I am bound to run into problem children that require frequent resets, and it is kind of a pain to pull out the device to reset it. The inside of the case is lined with a smooth, black neoprene fabric, providing good shock protection for the device. Left side openings The aluminum look matching the CLIÉ is a nice touch, and people have definitely noticed my elegant silver aluminum PDA case. For those geeks who throw their device in a bag or pack, you should check out the US$39.95 Proporta aluminum case selection. USER COMMENTS 7 comment(s) Warning!! I tried to open the clamshell while holding it on my palm without the case totally opening the folio, and then I heard a screeching sound that just broke my heart... Also, it's not very handy to use if you like the keyboard since you'll have to pop it out of the case to type. That's not a problem for me now because the bit that holds the Clie to the case is so loose, it may as well not be there. Back Reviews: Proporta Case Home iPAQ Aluminum Protective Case Proporta has only been around for a couple months (created after a merge of PalmTech and Scribble) but are already making a slash in the PDA case market with their aluminum cases for various PDA's. After releasing various Palm OS device cases, Proporta has finally begun shipping their first Pocket PC aluminum case. The case fits all 3000 series iPAQ devices and provides added protection over the included iPAQ case. Modeled after the Compaq plastic sleeve/cover introduced with the 3800 series iPAQ's, the Proporta iPAQ Aluminum Case provides added production at an incredibly reasonable price. The design of this case leaves openings where they are needed, and protection everywhere else. The first thing that is most notable about the cases design is that the top portion of the device is left uncovered. The case design works well with the iPAQ design to feature the two LED lights are used for various notification functions by the Pocket PC operating system. Even more benefits are incurred when this case is used with a 3800 or 3900 series iPAQ because of the placement of the speaker at the top of the device. The case fits onto the iPAQ just the way it should, like a glove. There are two things you really do not want in a case, the first being the case fitting to loosely. Proporta added a lining inside the case for added grip between the aluminum case and the shell of the iPAQ. The second thing you do not want is a lack of accessibility to your device. This case does not impede accessibility as almost every port is left available and all buttons can be easily accessed (after opening the front). Only the expansion sleeve port, the front buttons and joy pad are covered. Proporta has also accounted for the recorder button on the side and has allowed access to it without the case being open. Why is this important? The Pocket PC recoding software is one program you do not need to see the screen for to use. Since the microphone is on the top of the iPAQ, can you see how the design of this case can really work to your advantage? Someone noted on a message board that they were not fond of a case like this because it does not allow for expansion sleeves to be used with the iPAQ. Though it does not, I see this case as a product to just protect my iPAQ in day to day uses. I do not use my expansion sleeves everyday and I do not bring them with my when I go somewhere because I have little need for them in day to day tasks. What makes this case great as opposed to something like the included iPAQ case is that you do not have to take it out of the protection to be used. Just pop open the cover, add the contact, make a note, play a game, close the over, put it back in your pocket. Though really I like this case, there are two negative aspects that I found based on how I use my device. First of all, after fitting my device in the case it took me a little while to figure out how to easily get it out. The reason it is difficult to get out is because the case is not only molded to be only a hair bigger then the device, but it also has the padding and latch on the expansion connector to hold it in place. I would never worry about the product slipping out of this case, which is good, though it is sometimes a little tricky to get the iPAQ out. The best way I have found to get it out is to only the case in one hand and push with one finger on the power adapter plug-in and another finger over the soft reset button (3600 iPAQ). Another drawback is that though the sync port is not covered by the case, you cannot fit it in the sync cradle. If you have a USB Sync cable this is not a problem, but I would like to be able to plug in my device to sync while it is in the case. I have little fear of my device being damaged when using this case. Since I have received it, this case has been on my iPAQ for daily use just about everywhere. The powerful design of this product has given my rather "out of date" 3640 iPAQ a new style. Even better then that, the added style and protection benefits will only set you back $39 US (£25.49 in the UK). This case is really an inventive design from a company that seems not only aware of what a case needs to do, but also how case can actually fit correctly with your device to increase productivity. Dave's Score - 9.0 This means, this product is about as close to "the best" as you can get. This product embodies quality in its design and application, and is something I would use. Though you still should consider it for yourself, most would probably be happy with this product even if they were unable to try it prior to purchase. Back Reviews: Proporta Axim Case Home Axim X5 Aluminum Protective Case I have been a fan of Proporta since the first time I used one of their products (the iPAQ Aluminum case). Recently, Proporta has expanded their line of aluminum PDA cases. One of their new cases is for the Dell Axim X5. The Axim X5 has a number of buttons and ports that should be exposed (unlike my iPAQ 3600 that only has a few), so I was interested to see how Proporta would make a case that protects the device, while still leaving parts of it easily accessible. Also, since the Axim is one of the larger new PDA's on the market, I was interested to see how much bulk the case added to the device. Like many PDA's, the Axim's style is modeled as an all-in-one, so it does not have the easy expandability of a device like the iPAQ (which lends itself well to form-fitting cases). This presents two problems when trying to develop a case for the Axim. First, the case has to be able to somehow hold the device since there are no connection "ports" to connect to. Proporta accomplishes the task of holding the Axim in the case while it is closed by a partial aluminum cover on the base and a small piece of aluminum on the top. But when the case is opened, the top tab does not hold the device in. Proporta saw this problem, and invented a creative solution. Embedded inside the back of the case are two metal pieces which grip around the two small bumps on the back of the battery. Together, all this makes the device stay securely in the case. The second problem is bulk. Aluminum cases are supposed to add protection with minimal size. I believe Proporta did the best job they could at making the case as formfitting as possible, but the case does add a little more bulk than the iPAQ case did with my iPAQ. The aluminum Axim case leaves eleven ports, buttons, or other things accessible while the aluminum case is on the device. These places have less protection, but damage is still less likely due to the aluminum around them. On the bottom of the case, both the AC adapter port and the serial port are exposed. This works great for connecting the AC adapter or the USB sync cable, but the added size of the case makes it not possible to connect the serial port via the sync cradle. Usually you would expect the front face of the case to leave nothing exposed, but Proporta added a little feature and left the cool little Axim speaker exposed. Call it an added bonus for users that like to listen to the "high fidelity" sound of the embedded speaker. (Don't deny it, you know you do it.) On the left side of the device the SD card slot, scroll switch, record button, and soft reset button are all accessible. The case makes the SD card slot a little more difficult to use, once again because of the added size of the case. The scroll switch works just well with the case and comes in very handy for controlling the volume in Windows Media Player. The record button is near impossible for me to press, though I only blame this partially on Proporta as I can not always get it to activate when the device is not in this case. Really this button is not of any help because the microphone on the front face of the device, so it is covered by the aluminum casing. The soft reset button is the final button accessible on the left side. Almost the whole top of the device is exposed for use. The CF slot is exposed as is the access for pulling out cards. The IrDA port is exposed for beaming as is the headphone jack. The stylus can be taken out of the device both when the case is open and when it is closed. Because of all the buttons and the SD slot on the left side of the Axim, Proporta had to move the hinge for the cover to the right side of the device. This causes the device to be easier to hold by right-handed user, though it takes a little getting used to as it seems like it opens the “wrong way.” One of the complains I would have is that the sync/serial port is exposed at the bottom. Being that I do not have a USB cable, it would be nice if there was some kind of cover, though I understand that many users have the USB cable and having this port always open is helpful. As I stated before, the record button is not very easy to press with the case, nor does it really have a lot of functionality when the case is closed (because of the hidden microphone). The biggest problems with this case are really only because of the style of the Axim. The Axim does not let itself particularly well to a form-fitting case, but Proporta makes likely one of the best form-fitting aluminum cases for the Axim. Once again, I am very satisfied with Proporta’s solution for protecting the Axim with a solid, stylish, and practical. I have little fear of my Axim being damaged with this case. The aluminum Axim X5 case retails for $39 US (£27.45 in the UK) shipped from Proporta and is likely one of the best hard cases available for the Axim. Dave's Score - 9.0 This means, this product is about as close to "the best" as you can get. This product embodies quality in its design and application, and is something I would use. Though you still should consider it for yourself, most would probably be happy with this product even if they were unable to try it prior to purchase. At first I was bummed, especially when I saw that Rhino doesn't make a titanium case for the Prism; but then I started thinking about the problems I had with the old case. It didn't exactly hold on to my Visor--I've actually had the thing pop out of the case on occasion--and it wasn't really that sleek. It was basically a chunk of rectangular metal that could probably stop a bullet, but was as ugly as all get out. The biggest annoyance was the fact that my Visor wouldn't fit in the case when I was using my favorite Springboard, a memory upgrade. So I started shopping around for replacements and quickly stumbled upon the Pocket Armor site . front of the Prism case in gold color The case looked sleek, came with a little cut out for my Visor's IR, and--best yet--included a slot on top that let you plug in Springboards without removing the Visor. The only downside, it appeared, was that the case is made of aluminum, but so were all the others ... so I bought it. It arrived a week later and really makes a great first impression. The case, though still rectangular, features rounded corners and a sleek body that cradles my Visor. Inside there's a sheet of neoprene-like stuff attached on one side to protect your screen when the case is closed. inside of the case To mount the case, you just remove your stylus and slide a plastic stem, which is attached to the hinge, into the case's stylus slot. This holds the case firmly in place while still allowing it to pivot on the hinge. Unfortunately, it also means the case opens with the Visor on the left-hand side of the case instead of the right, which takes a little getting used to. attaching the stylus The other problem is that this system forces you to use the built-in clip to hold your stylus. The clip seems to want to hold my stylus, a combo number with a built-in pen, but the thing keeps spitting it out every couple of minutes, leaving it sliding around in my case and making obnoxious noises as I walk. I finally got it to stay put but putting the pen in upside down. The IR port, a nicely crafted oval jobbie, seems to be located in the right place, but I can't get my IR to work while it's in the case. Not sure why. inserting a Springboard Finally, and most annoying of all, the Springboard slot is all but a waste. Again, its design is fairly clever, featuring a plastic cover that can be removed to allow you access to the port on the top of the Visor. Unfortunately, the case is so sleek that it leaves no room for any sort of Springboard to fit while it's closed. Basically, the only way you could really use the slot is with the few boards that leave no footprint whatsoever. This, of course, does not include my fave board, which requires a scant few millimeters. Oh, well, maybe next time. Compatibility Pocket Armor comes in all sorts of flavors, from the Sony Clié to the Palm V. I only tried the Visor Prism, so I'd hate to speak for the rest. Visor settling in Conclusion Overall this is a worthwhile product, and certainly the best for its incredibly affordable price. While there were a number of minor issues with mine, they were more annoyance than something warranting avoidance. Besides, most of the cases out there have the same problems or worse. I'd say if you're in the market Pocket Armor is worth the payola. Hopefully newer versions will feature a bit more space for Springboards and come with a titanium option, 'cause I need my bulletproof case. Ratings Defense Although minor, it just annoys me that the Pocket Armor: Prism features a Springboard slot but no real way to use it. Some design engineer forgot to eat his Wheaties that day. Also, the issue with the clip and IR port shouldn't be there--both are incredibly easy to do right. It struck me that these were quality control issues, so I docked accordingly, and gave DS International's Pocket Armor: Prism 3 Geekheads out of 5 for Quality. It's sleek, it's aluminum, it's today's answer to the pocket protector. With penholder and lines that seem to caress the PDA its built to protect, Pocket Armor almost makes geek chic. 4 Geekheads for Geekness.
