Gadgeteer Hands On Review : Proporta Aluminum Case for the Palm Tungsten | T by Judie Hughes D ate: 02/10/2003 Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. Product Requirements: Device: Palm Tungsten | T Update 7/11/03 - See below for details in red. In the past, I have become incredibly spoiled by the offerings from Proporta . This company creates some of the finest aluminum PDA cases available today; they are form fitting, good-looking and very protective. Some of you may have noticed that for the longest time, I didn't have a TT case listed on my diary page. Well, it wasn't for lack of looking...and now I have the case I have been waiting for: the Proporta Tungsten Aluminum Case . Executed as a book-style in a satin titanium finish, the Proporta manages to cover almost every surface of the Tungsten in neoprene lined armor. But before I start talking about the inside, let's talk about the outside... On the lower right of the front flip-cover, is a raised Proporta symbol. This bit of branding is unobtrusive and looks great. The side rear has the " proporta.com " address printed in white. The flip-cover is held in place with a friction clasp, which seems very secure and should not open unintentionally. There are cutouts for the voice-recorder / head-phone jack area, the sync/charging area, and the top of the PDA. When the flip-cover is closed, its curved upper area covers the edge of the TT to the power button. When opened, the cover falls to the right, like an opened book. The cover does not fold to the rear of the PDA, which works fine for me but may bother others. The hinge holding the slip-cover appears to be sturdy and should withstand years of use. As I mentioned previously, the interior of the Proporta is lined in soft neoprene. This not only cushions your TT from fall, but also protects it from scratches. Innopocket version of this case now includes 2 SD card slots in case cover. SD cards slide in easily, but are oriented 'face' down. This seems strange as the card connectors are exposed. It is nice to be able to carry as many as 3 SD cards with you at one time though. You insert the TT by sliding it into the holster portion of the Proporta. The aluminum wraps around the bottom of the PDA and helps to hold it in securely. Of note are the two aluminum clips on the inside rear of the case. These fit into the two clips on the back of the bottom half of the TT, holding the case securely when you slide the top portion of the TT out to access the graffiti area. One thing that I am "iffy" about regarding this case, is that you have to practically remove the TT before you can perform a soft-reset. Since the holster and the clips hold the bottom of the TT so securely, it can be a bit of a pain to slide the PDA in and out. I am constantly loading and removing software from my Tungsten, so this is a bigger problem for me than it might be for others. One other thing that might be a con for many users is that you can't sync the TT with the cradle while it is in the case. I am using a BoxWave miniSync to sync and charge, so this is not a problem for me. The Proporta is officially my favorite Tungsten case. I have mentioned before how much I have always loved small things that have a nice weight to them, and the TT ensconced in this case easily fills the bill. I don't want to make you think that the Proporta turns the TT into an even heavier little stone though, so here are some size comparisons for you to check out... Height Width Thickness Weight Naked Tungsten (w/ PDA Panache Stylus) 4.0" (10.2cm) 2.9" (7.5cm) 0.6" (1.5cm) 5.7 ounces (163g) Tungsten in Proporta (w/PDA Panache stylus) 4.1" (10.5cm) 3.3" (8.4cm) at clasp 0.9" (2.2cm) 7.9 ounces (225g) When the TT is inside the Proporta, I have no reservations about sticking the combo in my rear jeans pocket - the case is that small, and that tough. If you are looking for a very protective yet good-looking case, you should definitely check out the Proporta. Price: $38.00 Pros: Ultimate protection in an attractive package Price is reasonable Cons: Can not use cradle to hot-sync/charge the TT while it is in case No easy access to reset button while TT is in case Let us know your comments on this review and read what others have to say. PDA Buyer's Guide Home Click Here Click Here PDA Case Reviews: Hard Cases SmarterCase Want a personalized case that doesn't look nerdy? SmarterCase has the case for you. These cases come in a large variety of coverings, from several colors of leather to denim, to ever-trendy fuzzy animal finishes like leopard and zebra. There are even floral prints, American flag prints, business tweeds, and patterns just for kids! How sturdy are these stylin' cases? They're make of steel, with a robust 3" piano hinge along the left side. I stood on one, and didn't put a dent in it. How affordable are they? At $19.95 you can't beat the value. How big are they? Well, not small at 6" tall, 4" wide and 1" deep, but the size does fit most any handheld (Palm or Pocket PC format) PDA, and perhaps a few credit cards, cash and etc. We examined samples in blue leather and dark leopard and found both to our liking. The leather case has a classy look and feel, reminiscent of those cigarette cases you see in 40's movie. The leopard case is perfect for matching to your purse and wallet. The snap closure is welcome: it closes with a secure snap and doesn't screech like velcro when you open it (have you even opened a PDA case with a velcro closure during a meeting?). Inside the case you will find velcro for holding your PDA firmly in place (we don't mind this, as one rarely has to remove the PDA from a well-designed case, so noise is less of an issue), an elastic to hold an extra stylus in place, and a paper notepad on the left side. The pad is a common size and easily replaceable-- good going, SmarterCase! You can also get your case with an Ultra Clip belt clip. The bottom line: this is one stylish case and you can't find more protection for you PDA at this price. www.smartercase.com price $19.95 SmarterCase saddle leather SmarterCase Saddle leather SmarterCase in Zebra inside the Zebra SmarterCase RhinoSkin One of the most well known and popular cases on the market, RhinoSkin made their name with the first cool looking nearly indestructible case for the Palm Pilot. Now they make cases for all kinds of PDAs-- popular Palm models, the Visor and Visor Edge, iPAQ and Jornada to name a few. Their slider case allows you to slide the front cover up and over the PDA so that it rests behind the back cover. The more traditionally designed flip cover cases are form molded for a snug custom fit on your PDA. There are aluminum models for very good protection and titanium cases for those of you who tend to step on, knock around or otherwise accidentally abuse your PDA. The aluminum case is very stylish looking and has a (surprise) bright aluminum finish that's the perfect companion to the Compaq iPAQ among others. The titanium case is a bit darker and may tend to show some moisture and sweat marks because that's the nature of titanium (these will clean off). Whichever you choose, be sure your PDA will be well protected in these hard cases. However nothing can insure that your LCD won't crack if you drop you PDA a few feet to the floor. If you're a PDA-dropper, you might want to look at the less sexy but most insulated case around, the Otter Box. www.rhinoskin.com prices vary with model, aluminum ~ $34.95 and Titanium ~ $69.95 Buy RhinoSkin cases at Amazon.com! InnoPocket Hard Cases for Many PDAs If you are looking for a hard case that offers protection both inside and out while allowing access to all ports and slots, you should definitely check out InnoPocket’s aluminum hard cases. These cases are 100% aircraft aluminum with a thin neoprene lining inside to protect your PDA from scratches. The benefit of using aluminum is that it’s both sturdy and lightweight. The outside surface of these cases feels very hard and strong. You can be sure the case will protect the PDA if you drop something on it. Of course, we didn’t throw sharp knives or drive cars over it . The edges of these cases are very smooth and don’t feel sharp, so you won’t have to worry about it cutting or scratching your hand. The inside lining feels rubbery and will help to protect your PDA and its screen from any scratches, and it should absorb a bit of shock. Even though the metal feels very strong, the cases are actually very thin and lightweight. Their weight ranges from 45g (Palm m500 case) to 80g (Sony Clie NX case). InnoPocket hard cases are designed for specific PDA models, which insures a good fit. The design is both sleek and user friendly. There are a variety of aluminum finishes that will fit the look and feel of specific PDAs, and none of the cases shows fingerprints. For example, the Titanium grey goes well with the Palm m500 series finish, while the shinier bright aluminum case goes well with the iPAQ design. If you have a Sony Clie T615 in blue, you can even get a metallic blue case to go with it. Since the cases are molded to fit the PDAs, you will notice the curves closely follow the PDA’s shape. The cases all have cutouts to give you access to Stylus, IR, Speaker, Headphone Jack, Memory Slot and Hotsync Port on your PDA.Without adding much weight and size, InnoPocket’s cases provide good protection to your PDA inside and out. The sleek design and easy access to everything makes the cases attractive to a wide range of PDA owners. They start at $29 and are available for most Palm and Sony brand PDAs including Tungsten T, NX and SJ/SL series, as well as iPAQ Pocket PCs and Genio. Check InnoPocket's website for the complete list. Update, March 2003 Metal Deluxe Case for Dell Axim X5 After having seen a few of InnoPocket's metal cases in the past few months, it seems that each new case adds some new features that make them look and feel better than the last one. The Metal Deluxe Case for Dell Axim X5 is one of the newest addition to their collection. Built with 100% anodized aircraft grade aluminum with shinny silver finish, Dell case fits the PDA unit like a glove. With a neoprene lining inside of the metal cover, the Dell case gives you an opening on top so that you can slide the Axim X5 into the case. There is a bottom cover with cutouts for all ports, that holds the PDA securely in place. Not only are the bottom ports such as power and serial connector exposed for easy access, but also the speaker on the front cover, SD card slot, jog dial, record and reset buttons on the left hand side as well as the top CF card slot, microphone jack and IR port are also exposed with cutouts from the case. The case cover opens from the left and has a hinge that bends over on the top to prevent the unit from sliding out when in the case. It weighs about .90g and sells for $39.95 US. www.innopocket.com Innopocket hard cases Left: Case for Palm V and m500 series. davespda.com/Reviews Proporta Case Review iPAQ Aluminum Protective Case Proporta has only been around for a couple months (created after a merge of PalmTech and Scribble) but are already making a slash in the PDA case market with their aluminum cases for various PDA's. After releasing various Palm OS device cases, Proporta has finally begun shipping their first Pocket PC aluminum case. The case fits all 3000 series iPAQ devices and provides added protection over the included iPAQ case. Modeled after the Compaq plastic sleeve/cover introduced with the 3800 series iPAQ's, the Proporta iPAQ Aluminum Case provides added production at an incredibly reasonable price. The design of this case leaves openings where they are needed, and protection everywhere else. The first thing that is most notable about the cases design is that the top portion of the device is left uncovered. The case design works well with the iPAQ design to feature the two LED lights are used for various notification functions by the Pocket PC operating system. Even more benefits are incurred when this case is used with a 3800 or 3900 series iPAQ because of the placement of the speaker at the top of the device. The case fits onto the iPAQ just the way it should, like a glove. There are two things you really do not want in a case, the first being the case fitting to loosely. Proporta added a lining inside the case for added grip between the aluminum case and the shell of the iPAQ. The second thing you do not want is a lack of accessibility to your device. This case does not impede accessibility as almost every port is left available and all buttons can be easily accessed (after opening the front). Only the expansion sleeve port, the front buttons and joy pad are covered. Proporta has also accounted for the recorder button on the side and has allowed access to it without the case being open. Why is this important? The Pocket PC recoding software is one program you do not need to see the screen for to use. Since the microphone is on the top of the iPAQ, can you see how the design of this case can really work to your advantage? Someone noted on a message board that they were not fond of a case like this because it does not allow for expansion sleeves to be used with the iPAQ. Though it does not, I see this case as a product to just protect my iPAQ in day to day uses. I do not use my expansion sleeves everyday and I do not bring them with my when I go somewhere because I have little need for them in day to day tasks. What makes this case great as opposed to something like the included iPAQ case is that you do not have to take it out of the protection to be used. Just pop open the cover, add the contact, make a note, play a game, close the over, put it back in your pocket. Though really I like this case, there are two negative aspects that I found based on how I use my device. First of all, after fitting my device in the case it took me a little while to figure out how to easily get it out. The reason it is difficult to get out is because the case is not only molded to be only a hair bigger then the device, but it also has the padding and latch on the expansion connector to hold it in place. I would never worry about the product slipping out of this case, which is good, though it is sometimes a little tricky to get the iPAQ out. The best way I have found to get it out is to only the case in one hand and push with one finger on the power adapter plug-in and another finger over the soft reset button (3600 iPAQ). Another drawback is that though the sync port is not covered by the case, you cannot fit it in the sync cradle. If you have a USB Sync cable this is not a problem, but I would like to be able to plug in my device to sync while it is in the case. I have little fear of my device being damaged when using this case. Since I have received it, this case has been on my iPAQ for daily use just about everywhere. The powerful design of this product has given my rather "out of date" 3640 iPAQ a new style. Even better then that, the added style and protection benefits will only set you back $39 US (£25.49 in the UK). This case is really an inventive design from a company that seems not only aware of what a case needs to do, but also how case can actually fit correctly with your device to increase productivity. Dave's Score - 9.0 This means, this product is about as close to "the best" as you can get. This product embodies quality in its design and application, and is something I would use. Though you still should consider it for yourself, most would probably be happy with this product even if they were unable to try it prior to purchase. InnoPocket Metal Deluxe PDA Case (Palm Zire 71 & Toshiba e740/750) Reviewed by: Jack Reikel , send e-mail Published by: Inno Pocket, go to the web site Requires: Palm Zire 71 or Toshiba e740/750 MSRP: $33.50 (Zire 71), $29.99 (e740/750) A review of a PDA case? Uh huh - and in case you didn't notice, the last time anyone looked a Palm Zire 71 costs $299 and a Toshiba e740 costs $399. You better have a decent case to protect the investment. Most of us know this, but in the quest for ever more protective storage and carrying devices for our PDAs, MP3 players, laptops and sundry other electronica, there comes a time when you have to stop making comparisons and actually buy something. In fact though, most people who use the aforementioned gadgets already own several cases which simply didn't work out. They were either too cumbersome, too difficult to allow quick use of the device being protected/carried, or otherwise flimsy or poorly made. So I declare here and now that I'm one of you - and I use my own Palm Zire 71 for everything imaginable. I have two favorite cases for it which are both used extensively - an EB Cases custom leather model with magnetic closure & Slipper belt clip, and (now) the Innopocket Metal Deluxe case with custom mount & protective liner. Why two cases? What's the difference? The EB Cases model is used strictly for vacation travel, casual travel (the kind where I'm going from mall to mall, store to store with the kids with no briefcase and pockets already stuffed with wallet car keys, etc.). I need the PDA during such times for lists, drop-off appointments., telephone numbers and you name it. The Innopocket Metal Deluxe is strictly business on the other hand. With its hard shell, clean lines and easy-open friction snap, it can sit in the car, in my briefcase, get banged around in the most abusive manner and still come up with a completely protected and unmarred PDA for use at a moment's notice in meetings, in my office (I use the Palm calculator, DateBook 5 and SuperNames database constantly along with SplashID, Palm Reader and BDicty), and on the road when I'm traveling on business (literally every week). The Innopocket Metal Deluxe PDA case is a matte aluminum formed case which is custom designed, molded and fitted specifically for the Palm Zire 71. Innopocket also makes custom fitted metal cases for the Palm Tungsten T/W & M500/1xx, the Sony SJ30/33/NX60/70, HP iPaq 1910,2210, the Toshiba e740/750, and the T-Mobile. We use a Toshiba e740 at Kickstartnews for a variety of purposes so StylusCentral sent us an Innopocket metal case for it as well. Installing the PDA in one of these cases is simple. Slide it down through the top of the open case and two pressure springs snap gently into the stud recesses in the back of the PDA, holding it firmly in place against the unobtrusive retainers on both sides of the bottom shell. The cases have carefully machined custom cut outs for the PDA's power button, stylus slot, headphone jack, HotSync or ActiveSync connector and expansion slot. The edge finishing on the cases is excellent - very smooth with no burrs, no wire edges and no sharp corners or running edges. The surface of the cases are pebbled, which serves to reduce visibility of fingerprints and also provides a good grip when carrying and using the cases. We used the Zire 71 and Toshiba e740 cases continuously for over three weeks and were delighted with the amount of wear & tear we could heap on them. After three weeks of daily - often hourly - use, we couldn't find any dings, dents, scratches or other things which might detract from the clean look of the cases. The Zire case did not impede our use of the PDA's built-in digital camera - the mounts gripped the Zire firmly enough so that pushing up the PDA body to open the camera did not also shove the PDA out of the case. Nice. The Zire case features two storage slots with retainer clips for carrying extra expansion cards. The e740 case does not offer any additional storage - a bit of disappointment considering the amount of portable data which can be jammed onto these things (photos, documents and so on) and which PDA users routinely carry on additional SD and CF cards. The high density resilient padding in both cases is very gentle to the finish on your PDA. The padding is thin but quite dense, resistant to abrasion and does not collect dust or lint (which helps keep your screen clean - PDA screens are serious dust magnets). We were repeatedly surprised by the strength and rigidity of the case aluminum. We dropped heavy binders (by accident) on both cases on several occasions, but we failed to scratch or otherwise harm the cases and of course the PDAs were well protected too. Cons: Adds some bulk to the PDA physically and visually. Metal can get uncomfortably cool when case is used outside in cold weather. No expansion card storage in the e740 case. Pros: Beautifully finished - excellent machining, cutting and forming - no sharp edges of any kind, and PDA is securely clipped in place. PDA retainer clips are built into the case and nothing scratches your expensive PDA. Accurately cut openings for power switch, speaker, stylus and sync connector. PDA can remain in the case while HotSyncing. If you're interested in protecting a PDA worth hundreds of dollars, the InnoPocket Deluxe Metal Cases will do the job. Recommended. Since I generally carry around a pack/soft briefcase loaded with my gear and other junk, I place my PDAs into the bag and only carry one around on my belt at a time. I thought the aluminum case would be great for throwing my CLIÉ in my pack and not worrying if I smashed it or dropped my bag. Thomas posted a review of one of these cases for the Palm Tungsten T and was quite pleased with the it. Packaged NX case I was extremely surprised when the package arrived because the case was much lighter than I anticipated. As you know, the CLIÉ NX is a hefty device, and if a case with very little weight can be found then it is much better to carry around. The case is constructed of high quality, aircraft-grade aluminum material and is extremely lightweight, coming in at only about two ounces. The case comes in a nice, formed plastic bubble package, and has directions for placing the CLIÉ in the case. The outside finish closely matches the brushed silver on the CLIÉ and looks wonderful. The corners and curves are smooth and stylish. The hinge is about four inches long and seems very solid. I tried pushing the case together and the aluminum did not get pushed in at all. The case opens to the right like a book, and although the top is a bit unwieldy, I am still able to surf and write comfortably. It is a bit more difficult to use the thumb keyboard, so I take the NX out for longer text entry. Opened case with NX in left side There are openings for the Wi-Fi/CF and Memory Stick cards, as well as an opening so you can use the camera in the case. All side functions on the left side of the device are accessible, yet there is still enough material to provide strength and protection. The back also has a fine mesh screen over the speaker, allowing for clear sound through the case. The bottom is open to allow you to sync via the cable and access the stylus. The only improvement I would recommend is placing a small hole to access the reset button. Since I review so many software titles I am bound to run into problem children that require frequent resets, and it is kind of a pain to pull out the device to reset it. The inside of the case is lined with a smooth, black neoprene fabric, providing good shock protection for the device. Left side openings The aluminum look matching the CLIÉ is a nice touch, and people have definitely noticed my elegant silver aluminum PDA case. For those geeks who throw their device in a bag or pack, you should check out the US$39.95 Proporta aluminum case selection. USER COMMENTS 7 comment(s) Warning!! (9:42am EST Fri May 30 2003) I've got one for my NR and it scratched my Clie!! I tried to open the clamshell while holding it on my palm without the case totally opening the folio, and then I heard a screeching sound that just broke my heart... Also, it's not very handy to use if you like the keyboard since you'll have to pop it out of the case to type. That's not a problem for me now because the bit that holds the Clie to the case is so loose, it may as well not be there. Basically, this case looks good, but there are real design problems... - by supperman iconcepts? Highlights Firm clip-in system; built in IR port; removable Springboard access slot in Prism version Lowlights Made of low-grade aluminum; stylus clip doesn't always hold your stylus; ports aren't quite the right size Developer DS International, Inc. Location Pocket Armor main page Price iPAQ version (3800, 3700, 3600, 3100): US$34 Clié version (T and N Series): US$34 m500 version (m500, m505): US$29 Palm V version (V, Vx): US$29 Handspring Visor (Visor, Deluxe, Platinum, Neo, Pro): US$29 Handspring Prism: US$29 I recently upgraded my handheld from a Visor Solo to the Visor Prism and discovered that my beloved titanium Rhinoskin case wouldn't hold my new toy. At first I was bummed, especially when I saw that Rhino doesn't make a titanium case for the Prism; but then I started thinking about the problems I had with the old case. It didn't exactly hold on to my Visor--I've actually had the thing pop out of the case on occasion--and it wasn't really that sleek. It was basically a chunk of rectangular metal that could probably stop a bullet, but was as ugly as all get out. The biggest annoyance was the fact that my Visor wouldn't fit in the case when I was using my favorite Springboard, a memory upgrade. So I started shopping around for replacements and quickly stumbled upon the Pocket Armor site . front of the Prism case in gold color The case looked sleek, came with a little cut out for my Visor's IR, and--best yet--included a slot on top that let you plug in Springboards without removing the Visor. The only downside, it appeared, was that the case is made of aluminum, but so were all the others ... so I bought it. It arrived a week later and really makes a great first impression. The case, though still rectangular, features rounded corners and a sleek body that cradles my Visor. Inside there's a sheet of neoprene-like stuff attached on one side to protect your screen when the case is closed. inside of the case To mount the case, you just remove your stylus and slide a plastic stem, which is attached to the hinge, into the case's stylus slot. This holds the case firmly in place while still allowing it to pivot on the hinge. Unfortunately, it also means the case opens with the Visor on the left-hand side of the case instead of the right, which takes a little getting used to. attaching the stylus The other problem is that this system forces you to use the built-in clip to hold your stylus. The clip seems to want to hold my stylus, a combo number with a built-in pen, but the thing keeps spitting it out every couple of minutes, leaving it sliding around in my case and making obnoxious noises as I walk. I finally got it to stay put but putting the pen in upside down. The IR port, a nicely crafted oval jobbie, seems to be located in the right place, but I can't get my IR to work while it's in the case. Not sure why. inserting a Springboard Finally, and most annoying of all, the Springboard slot is all but a waste. Again, its design is fairly clever, featuring a plastic cover that can be removed to allow you access to the port on the top of the Visor. Unfortunately, the case is so sleek that it leaves no room for any sort of Springboard to fit while it's closed. Basically, the only way you could really use the slot is with the few boards that leave no footprint whatsoever. This, of course, does not include my fave board, which requires a scant few millimeters. Oh, well, maybe next time. Compatibility Pocket Armor comes in all sorts of flavors, from the Sony Clié to the Palm V. I only tried the Visor Prism, so I'd hate to speak for the rest. Visor settling in Conclusion Overall this is a worthwhile product, and certainly the best for its incredibly affordable price. While there were a number of minor issues with mine, they were more annoyance than something warranting avoidance. Besides, most of the cases out there have the same problems or worse. I'd say if you're in the market Pocket Armor is worth the payola. Hopefully newer versions will feature a bit more space for Springboards and come with a titanium option, 'cause I need my bulletproof case. Ratings Defense Although minor, it just annoys me that the Pocket Armor: Prism features a Springboard slot but no real way to use it. Some design engineer forgot to eat his Wheaties that day. Also, the issue with the clip and IR port shouldn't be there--both are incredibly easy to do right. It struck me that these were quality control issues, so I docked accordingly, and gave DS International's Pocket Armor: Prism 3 Geekheads out of 5 for Quality. It's sleek, it's aluminum, it's today's answer to the pocket protector. With penholder and lines that seem to caress the PDA its built to protect, Pocket Armor almost makes geek chic. 4 Geekheads for Geekness. (PRWEB) March 25, 2004 -- Pocket PC Magazine has published a review of an aluminum PDA case for iPAQ devices available at StylusCentral.com. Allen Gall, a product reviewer with Pocket PC Magazine, calls the case “slender and form fitting” and says he “wouldn’t be worried at all about the drops, scrapes, and bumps that can happen during regular use” if his iPAQ is protected by this case made of aircraft-grade anodized aluminum. The case is precision molded to fit the exact dimensions of specific PDA models and includes Neoprene lining to firmly secure the handhelds to protect them against drops, shocks and collisions. The model Mr. Gall reviewed, designed to the exact dimensions for the iPAQ 2215 model includes cutouts in the case to provide easy access to the PDA’s stylus, memory slot, headphone jack, IR port, microphone, reset button, speaker and charging/synchronization port. The model also includes a slot for storing an extra SD card. For more information about this case, visit www.styluscentral.com/dealcaforiph.html.
